The location of the St. John Westin was fantastic. Would definitely recommend to travelers to rent a car to be able to access other beaches on the island. The foot at the resort wasn't very good and was very expensive. A better alternative would be to have a room/condo with a kitchen to prepare small meals. The transfer to and from the hotel was timely. The information I received from Apple about how to find the transfer at the airport could be updated - i was told to find a person in a Hawaiian shirt, however, the St. John Westin had a desk in the baggage claim area at the airport and that was where we were supposed to check in for our transfer to the island. The staff at the Westin was very friendly. Ashley, the concierge, was ery helpful and extremely nice to work with. It would have been helpful for the Apple Vacation team to advise us to check in with the concierge upon arrival as they had information and discount passes for us that we weren't aware of right away. The rental car office on site at the Westin was less than helpful - we ended up renting a car from a place in town (for less $) and they arrange to pick you up from the resort so it's pretty seamless. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at the St. John Westin. We heard that they are going to do some major rebuilding of the resort, but I hope it doesn't loose some of it's island feel - the property is great and it's nice that it just blends in with a lot of the scenery vs. being a large multistory building interrupting the beauty of the island.

I can't complain about a thing. One day the maid service forgot to put coffee in our room and within minutes they delivered it. All of the employees were helpful and kind. The food was delicious. The room was clean. The check-in was smooth and informative. I'd go back to the Westin in St. John in a second!

Westin is great for your first visit

We stayed at The Westin on our first visit to St John. Beautiful welcoming resort. Very friendly people and extremely well maintained. We stayed in a beach front room, which was dated but comfortable and convenient to everything! Unfortunately all of the rooms are being converted to time shares. So, it may be impossible to stay there again unless you purchase. After our first trip we decided to opt for private villas.

Don’t ever be in a life or death situation with Westin/Marriott

I first and foremost want to express my concern and sympathy for those Westin St John employees whose families were deeply affected by Hurricane Irma. The Westin, Starwood, and Marriott International were absolutely lacking in their planning and care for their guests in the days prior to this hurricane. My husband, my mother in law and I with our 3 children received countless pieces of misinformation in the days leading up to the hurricane. We were told “no worries” up until less than 3 days before the hurricane. we were even encouraged to sit in on a timeshare presentation on the day the hurricane was to hit. We were encouraged to leave the hotel 2 days before the hurricane. We were lied to regarding the Westin ferry schedule to get us to St Thomas and also about the recommended St Thomas hotel which was conveyed as a “very nice hotel”. Completely untrue. Our flight was canceled from St Thomas and I begged the Westin and every other Marriott property on St John/St Thomas to take us in because of the poor conditions of the St Thomas hotel. All refused us (even as Platinum Marriott member). My 3 children (all 3 years or under) had to endure on of the West experiences of or lives as a result of improper and poor planning by Westin. My husband reached out to Marriott International and it took them over a month to contact us. Marriott International says they appreciate the loyalty of its guests but clearly they were unloyal and unfaithfu during a time when guests needed it most. I can only assume that the communication from the top down regarding this particular Westin was woefully flawed. As a result of being pushed out of this Westin, my family and I endured a week of chaos and life-threatening conditions and did not make it home until nearly 2 weeks later after being taken off of St Thomas by Puerto Rican Rangers (to whom we are ever-grateful). Such a sad, sad display of behavior of Big-business at its worst.

Love the spot it is beautiful and quiet.

I like that we can take a boat that takes us right to the hotel dock. It is hassle free. We love that it is safe in town and lots of great restaurants. The shops are quaint. I love walking in town the people are friendly and helpful.

We landed on St Thomas and the moment we stepped foot into the airport the local rum was being peddled at us left and right. We found our way to the Westin hotel shuttle area and checked in and were informed that the ferry ride was $125 per person and asked how would we like to pay. About 45 minutes later a group of us were boarded onto a safari like truck and shuttled to the ferry dock. The Ferry to Westin only travels 4 times a day so we had over a two-hour wait. The ferry area had a restaurant and less obvious little grocery store and maybe an art gallery. Again, signage was not apparent to us and we learned this later. The ferry to St John Westin is not only breathtaking but amusing. The emcee/tour guide is very informative and filled with lots of interesting tidbits about each island and cove along the way and also offering free shots of said local rum for every right question answered along the way. The ferry ride takes about 45 minutes depending on the weather. Once the ferry starts to approach the Westin cove you see the Welcome Wagon converge. It's actually pretty neat coming into the cove as there a bunch of parked sailboats anchored, water sports going on to one side while guest are swimming and or waving to you from the other side. Your baggage and island rum beverages are awaiting you once you disembark. From here you are picked up in a golf cart and taken to your building. Your baggage arrives a shortly thereafter. Honestly, there is no bad room or view from this resort, timeshare or vacation rental! There are different styles and designs of rooms, condos and townhomes which makes this place even more charming. The landscaping is beautiful! Very tropical and lush. Oh, and very exotic. You will love the roosters and hens running around tapping at your window/doors, the ton of iguanas' sunbathing on rocks or just out in the grass, the sounds of the owls hooting to each other in the trees, the little leaping lizards on the walkways at night that will have you jumping and then laughing and the sweet exotic floral smell that many honeymooners will try to replicate for years to come. There are three restaurants at the resort. Lemongrass-Casual dining. You can choose indoor or patio ocean view dining. Knox & Ollie's-Upscale dining. Located above the Lobby/Concierge desk making the view more jungle/tree top. Lastly, Snorkel's Bar and Grill which is pool and beachside fare. There is a little general store that offers a few breakfast pastry items and a limited Starbucks menu. Items in the general store are 3 to 4 times their normal cost and very limited to what is available. There is a general store outside of the resort that you can walk to or ask for a golf cart driver to take you and tip VERY well! Otherwise, you will need to continue on to the next paragraph.... So, the downfall of the resort is you need to take a "taxi" EVERYWHERE!! Oh, and if you forgot what a taxi is let me remind you...it is a safari truck. With that being said, know that you are not going anywhere until the truck is full so have your bug spray handy as you are going to be dinner for the mosquitos while you wait for the driver to take you to town for dinner!! Town is/was about 3 square blocks filled with some great places to eat and drink! There were a few overpriced questionable touristy tchotchke places. Our favorite was The Pig And The Rooster. Try to catch a sunset from the cove while you are in town. Tips: Pack a bag of food. Do some basic staples such as breakfast items and perhaps lunch items. Coffee, cereals, peanut butter, tuna fish, chips, snacks, candy, protein bars, nuts, trail mix, dry pasta, can of spaghetti sauce, etc. Things are expensive and you do not have many options. Bring what you like to save money to spend on excursions. Pack lots of bug spray, itch cream, Benedryl and small first aid kit. Don't forget the sunscreen! No need to bring pool floats. They only allow noodles in the pool and have floating loungers you can take for free with ID. There are also floating aquatic islands and play lands in the water. Have lots of cash on hand!! You will constantly need to tip for golf cart rides to your room and every taxi to leave the resort. We have traveled many places and despite some of the irritations that we experienced, the people of St John's and St Thomas are some of the nicest people we have ever met. Our hearts break for the residents of the USVI in wake of devastation left by Irma and Maria. Our thoughts and prays go out to the residents and business owners who have made our previous trips so special. We hope to see you all again in the future.

Horrible Crisis management by the GM and Head of security

We stayed in St. John during Irma. The night before the storm a meeting was held.the meeting did not allow for questions. The info shared was not reassuring. 2 days prior to storm around 3:30pm in the afternoon a voicemail was left telling us to leave the island due to the storm followed with a letter at 5:00 pm stating the same thing... this was. Dry alarming as there were no flights off the island. There was no offering of help from concierge about helping with finding s flight etc. after the storm there was a meeting again with minimal info but plenty of inappropriate jokes by Sam the GM. He stated that 2 families got off the island because of who they knew and laughed. They seemed to be annoyed by questions. Ben the security guy that they sent around to the rooms the night before the storm to do a head count was the doom of gloom and injected his opinion instead of stating facts whenever possible. Ex. At the informal headcount in our villa he stated: no structure is built to withstand a cat 5 hurricane." Terrible.. he led a couple of meetings and demeanor was basically the same! People in management need to know how to show calm and assurance in the mist of crisis. Sam the GM suggested that the way for guest can help is by picking up debris and placing in a pile in the event of Jose's arrival. But stated that this is at your own risk. There was no way for guest to locate staff after the storm. A suggestion was made for one staff to be made available for each unit. This was not done. We were told we are basically the fire patrol at one point. And finally we were sent to PR by boat with out correct info... we were told we would be greeted by marriot staff upon our arrival. Not true we arrived at a Hilton and we were under the assumption we would not have to pay.false! No direction at the Hilton. Some of us went into town and stayed at Marriott of which Sam only chose to tell a select few of compensation and that few spread the word.. thankfully! I saw a sense of them and us amongst the staff and management.. not cool! Either way I'm glad I'm home and hope event that the Marriott Corp rethink who they put in management because it is times like crisis when it really matters!! The staff was great!!!! But management 👎🏾👎🏾
