Inexpensive vacation, but you get what you pay for

We are by no means vacation snobs. We knew when we booked that we weren't booking a luxury resort. However, we weren't overly impressed with many aspects of this vacation. What we did like: 1. Once we were moved to the Tower (200 rooms) we loved our room, but we were first put in a bottom floor room in the 400's that smelled moldy and it was dingy and tiny. 2. The female bartender in the lobby bar was wonderful (I wish I remembered her name), and this was a great spot to get higher shelf vodka in our drinks. 3. The entertainment crew did a really great job of getting everyone involved in activities, and their fire show on Friday night was AMAZING! 4. The pool and beach are nice and kept clean (even though it is a man made beach, as are many in Aruba). We liked that kayaks and paddleboards were free to use, but it was quite boring as you had to keep them in the breakwater area. 5. The breakfast buffet was fairly broad, we got homemade omelettes every morning. 6. There was a woman doing water aerobics every day...she was awesome. 7. The spa was really enjoyable and fairly priced. 8. They did a good job of entertainment, there were some great musical acts out by the pool in the evenings that we enjoyed after coming back from dinner elsewhere. 9. The staff was very friendly, no issues with people not being accommodating. What was lacking: 1. The food in general left a lot to be desired. Even the hibachi restaurant was only fair to midland. The Italian restaurant was unimaginative. 2. I expected a real beach...it was a man made beach. 3. Buy yourself a large cup with a lid for your drinks, the cups are tiny, and you have to go back and forth to the bar too many times. 4. If you don't like your room ask for another one...they do have nicer rooms if you ask. I would say if you are a family, who isn't picky about food, and looking for a reasonably priced vacation for a family or large group...this would be a great spot. If you are a couple who loves food and good wine...you'll either be leaving the resort a lot for dinner or you won't be overly happy. Luckily, the Mambo beach area next door is amazing, many awesome restaurants, walk in and keep walking down, there is beach bar, after beach bar, and upstairs at the mall there are many other really good restaurants. Luckily our goal was to really get to know Curacao so we weren't at the resort as much as most would be. We ate there three nights and ate out the other 4. Don't do the timeshare presentation, it's not worth taking time out of your vacation! We were told 90 minutes tops...but we were there for almost 3 hours. I loved Curacao, especially the downtown area...if and when we go back we'll be looking for another place to stay. This just wasn't for us.

Excellent resort let down by the food.

Deluxe ocean view room was very good but looked out on a river/drain and the next resort buildings. The resort location is good with a reasonable beach and a ( man made) lagoon that is good enough for snorkelling when swimmers have not kicked up the coral dust too much. Although reserving a beach bed with your towel is not allowed most of them have towels on (but no bodies) by 8 am. Lots of places to eat and the only one that needs a reservation is the Japanese restaurant. We ate in the main restaurant most of the time. There was a very wide variety of food there but some of it was either under or over cooked - a great pity as the raw food was obviously good quality when it entered the kitchen. The 24 hour coffee (plus tea and chocolate) bar was very useful as it also serves pizza, cakes and other snacks. There is also a small ice cream kiosk - not many flavours but very welcome. The various bars served very good cocktails (their frozen mohito is excellent) and all the normal beers, spirits and soft drinks. For some reason, the girls seem to make better cocktails than the boys!! The front line staff are brilliant and work extremely hard - we could not fault any of them. The room cleaning was very good. The reception staff were very helpful and did our online check in and boarding card printing for us. All of the bar and restaurant staff were very good. The free shuttle to town was good (you get 3 hours there) but must be booked with the concierge. The aquarium is only a ten minute walk from the resort and it's worth going to see the dolphins and other sea creatures there - you can also swim with the dolphins there. Mambo beach is next to the aquarium and there is a collection of shops and eateries there. We will be returning to this resort as we think it is one of the better value ones in the Carribbean. It is also a very good resort for just chilling out.

At a relaxed pace!

We vacationed @ sunscape curacao Nov24-Dec1/17. The resort was intimate (not sprawling) which made it easier to get around to restaurants, the beach, bar and casino. The staff were helpful, fun and engaging.....thank YOU sheila (sheyla), irina, lucy, milagra and victor. We went to willemstad during the day for shopping and site seeing BUT our favourite was willemstad by night on a walking tour OMG. The lights and cultural festivities were WOW!!!! Also recommend day trip to klein beach on little curacao....BUT do it by boat (the mermaid) not catamaran; you stay drier and a little less sea-sick! All our activities were booked thru sunscape. Be on time! The beach @ the resort is not long but it is beautiful with sun-huts and a lagoon to dunk, swim or snorkle. Also a special area on beach for weddings or romantic dinner for whatever the occasion. We've never seen more gorgeous bluer water..... it is the saltiest we have ever experienced but so what. Lots of entertainment nightly around the pool. There are 5 restaurants to choose from. The only one that needs a reservation is the japanese one....hitsumu. Our favourite was mario's (italian) and the blue water grill (hi diadina and melissa). The only downside was our hot water was not so hot in the royal tower BUT that was minor. We would go back in a heartbeat! Frank/Anna P ;O)

As a Sun Club member check in was quick and easy. The pool and beach was awesome. Best of all was Kenneth who was informative and told is all about Sunscape and the rest of Curaçao. When he was not making drinks, picking up empty glasses, taking orders and keeping the area clean, he was a busy telling us about things to do and joking and laughing with us all. He was the highlight of our trip!! Philip Matte

Another great stay at Sunscape. We were in 8201 - ocean front. Plenty of hot water, ice cold air conditioning, fridge filled every day, maid service done by 11 every morning, internet worked great. The only complaint about the room was the inconsiderate people who moved into the room above us and were stomping around at 1 am. Sun club offers comfy lounge chairs on the beach. Yes the towel game was in full force. If you cant beat them join them - I went out at 530 and got the palapa I wanted. No problem getting towels until 4 or so. As usual, the snorkeling was great out front - lots of squid, tang, sargent majors, flying gurnard. Easy parking for the rental car. Food at the restaurants was fine - don't go expecting gourmet and you wont be disappointed. Norma was there and still being the resort ambassador - always a smile behind the bar and the best mojito maker! The person who bakes the cookies needs a raise - they are wonderful. Himitsu is now by reservation - we went one evening and had no problem making the reservation that morning. We were there for 10 days and never saw a rat, though we did see traps. I was looking at all hours for them since I had seen a few people mention them. Yes, the resort is fraying around the edges - it is a very windy island and between the wind and the sea spray, the upkeep must be constant. Yes we will return!
