Vacation for a large group - Sept 15-22
Moma_visits, Alexandria, Virginia

Our family group was composed of ten adults and three children, Because of the group composition, we decided an All Inclusive was the right choice for us. Reviews are so mixed for this hotel. I knew we weren't booking a luxury hotel, so I was not disappointed. Our room on the third floor of the Royal Tower was spacious and comfortable, looking over the top of thatch roofs to the lagoon and ocean. It was kept clean and the minibar was restocked daily. We never touched the AC control and were very comfortable. Walking the stairs was good exercise while we avoided waiting for a very hot elevator. We spent most of our time at the beach and in the pools. A few of us snorkeled regularly. Bringing your own gear is a good hint - no limit on time or schedule. Even though we brought water shoes, we did not find it necessary to use them regularly. The kids loved the water. The beach does drop off pretty quickly, so we were pretty insistent that the little ones wear their water wings constantly. Drinks were readily available. The lines were sometimes very long at the main/pool bar with only one bartender working. On trips to other islands I had taken an insulated cup. I wish I had remembered this time, too. With all the choices for food, no one in our group went hungry, even our picky eaters. The choices were diverse and plentiful, remembering this is not a luxury hotel. We were a large group and eating together was a priority. For the first few days we had no problems in the main dining area. The special dinners outside had no provisions for large groups, which we understood - we just ate in the "cafeteria." But then, the "cafeteria" could no longer seat us together. Not sure what changed the situation - they had been dealing with our large group for several days. We tried most of the specialty restaurants, usually eating early because of the young children. Most were very accommodating and the food might have been a step up from the general offering. The nine year old enjoyed taking advantage of the activities on the pool deck. They have a large Connect 4 game, a game which she thoroughly enjoys. We played two games; there was no one else anywhere around, but we were limited to the two games. Sometimes the rules were just plain silly - I would think seeing people playing and enjoying would attract other players. I found the staff in general to be helpful and delightful, always ready with a pleasant greeting and a smile. A thank you was always answered with an acknowledgment.Their facility with language is more than enviable, switching between English, Spanish, Dutch and Papiamento(sp?). Pleasing thirteen individuals is a daunting task, but I think all of us went home feeling good about our vacation. Sunshine and blue water are definite crowd pleasers, throw in family - all is good!

2-3 stars very dated, blazed people, mediocre food

I know most people find confusing reviews .... some says it's OWESOME, other it's sub par. I have traveled a lot, but in the last years I haven't had any reason to write a review because all things I read about, were correct! NOT THIS TIME! 1. The hotel advertises itself as a 4 stars! It's a joke! Except Royal Tower, which is renovated and can arguably be qualified to 3 stars +, all other rooms including Club area (where I stayed) are very very old and dated (25-30 years old without renovation) can realistic be qualified at 2 stars! 2. All facilities in the entire hotel are old and dated, including bars, but at club area, they do not have a bar ..! They have something mobile, with no fridge, so everything you can drink is not cold! It's impossible to drink a real cocktail, all of them are made from extremely sweet juice with little alcohol. You will be in Curacao and if you would like a Curacao drink, go in Willemstadt, otherwise you'll drink a ... sweeeeeeet juice from a bottle! 3. All the room in Club area are 20m form the main road and during night it's very very hard to sleep! More the very old air conditioning when starts you'll wake up in a second, many times per night! Better turn it off before sleeping! 3. Food .... well, except Oceana and Himitsu, all food is mediocre. At the main restaurant you'll find plenty of food and very diverse, but with very few exception, the taste is ..... canteen! Regarding cleanliness in this area, everything you touch is .. with a feel of grease ! 4. At Oceana and Grill you cannot reserve a table... so at 6:30 you'll have to be there if you want a table, otherwise they'll give you a pager and your wait can be between 2-3 hours! 5. People are disinterested.... most of them! Very few are trained to work in this environment! they give you the feeling you owe something to them .... nobody says hello, but if you salute them, most will respond! It's incredible! 6 They start some renovation, dismantling some roofs, arranging some rooms.... in-between tourists on the beach.. with noise, dust etc. Not a hotel I can recommend to be short! But, they have Italian prosecco of good quality, the beach and water are wonderful! Lot's of fish in the water , calm enough to swim, and you can have for free paddle boats! The dive center have good staff, boats and equipment! Different dive places, healthy corals, nice wreck, amazing night dive with UV lights and red filter on the dive mask so we've seen a lot of fluorescent life! If all you need is all inclusive, with mediocre food, but unlimited and drinks (the same unlimited) with poor accommodation and tired staff, go for it, if not, avoid it! Best regards!

Need improvements

So many things to improve: service level of waitressing, they were always working on maintenance so every time I got out of my room there was machinery and tools all over. Worrying for cleaning was poor: a friend of us cut his foot with a broken piece of glass, after that, we found several pieces of glasses at the beach. They only offered to refund 1 day of a week stay.

Best Ocean Swimming

Crystal clear ocean water behind a long rock barrier provides lengthy swimming. Depth drops quickly from the beach. Swim in 20-30 feet deep water. Food and accommodations are 3 Star. Viejalis is a great help at the front desk if you need assistance.

HAD A GREAT TIME!

So as I was reading the reviews for this resort(prior to my trip) I felt doubtful and had very low expectations going here. But after spending a week here, my husband and I had a blast. Don't get me wrong this place is not a 4 or 5 star resort. My guess would be a 3 star. I'll start with the Pros: The beach is superb and private. The snorkeling alone is worth staying here. We saw thousands of beautiful fish. I def recommend bringing your own snorkeling gear as the resort only allows you 1 hour daily using their equipment. Be sure to bring a tumbler too for your drinking needs. THe cups are small and they often run out. The room wasn't bad at all. We stayed on the 3rd floor of the tower. OUr first night our a/c broke but the maintenance crew had it up and running the very next day. Room was spacious and the a/c worked great. The housekeeping was excellent. We had CHristine and she was super nice and friendly. Actually most of the staff were friendly and everyone always said hello to us. There were 2 people I can recall that seemed miserable and that was the omelette station lady and the lady that worked in the gift shop was very unpleasant. Now I know this is an all inclusive resort and tips are included in your package but come on people. Maybe that's why we had exception service because we gave the bartenders and food servers a buck or 2 here and there. It truly does go a long way. I'm not saying you have to leave a tip every single time but here and there is always nice and the staff really does appreciate it and will remember you Shout out to Victor, Norma and Christine. As for the food: The buffet is awful for breakfast and lunch. They do no have a lot of choices and the food is basically "just edible". The evening restaurants were good though. Habichi was amazing and the Italian was very good too. There is an out door mall / beach about 10 walking minutes from the resort called "Mambo Beach" I suggest going here. My husband and I went here several times during our stay. There are bars, shopping, nightly entertaining and restaurants. Okay so back to the resort. This resort is very family friendly so if you bring yours kids I think they would love it. The one thing I will say negatively is that this resort as small as it is is very under staffed. They need more people working to accommodate the guests better. I cant really comment on the entertainment as my husband and I spent most of evenings at Mambo beach but the daytime entertainment seemed pretty good. Overall, I would def come back here. We are even thinking of planning another trip here next year but with our family.
