It is hard to be unhappy in paradise

We started coming to this resort as a family seeking peace after a the loss of our son, we were looking for peace, we found it, we also found good, happy, loving people in the staff, and after 12+ visits we look forward to coming home to paradise at the Cove. Whether you want a relaxing day of peace or a fun filled day of adventure, you can find it at Sunscape Cove. The entire staff will go out of their way to make sure you are content with anything you may need. Blue Mountain coffee with a great breakfast overlooking the blue waters of the Caribbean in the morning, then visit with sea life while snorkeling off the beach. Return from snorkeling to a rum drink then maybe a trip down the slide at the waterpark before lunch. Go to the Hip Strip in the afternoon, or an excursion, if you'd like you can chill by the pool or nap on the beach. After your perfect day expect a wonderful dining experience and some pretty impressive entertainment into the night. A clean, comfortable room will be waiting for you so you can recharge for tomorrow. Enjoy!

Entertainment was horrible.

My family and I stayed at the Cove resort in November 2017. If we had a choice, we would have gone to another resort. We were there for one week and the entertainment manager did not even say hi to us one time and he passed by us every day. Not even our children were greeted. I also find that most of the employees tend to greet each other than the guest themselves. I also find that there is not much of entertainment there. Once the program is finished, you are pretty much left to entertain yourself. On the positive side, you have a few employees who made our stay enjoyable. Racheal Higgins), the singing waiter (Oraldo Mullings), and Crystal. They were so polite and always made sure they greeted us and made sure we were taken care of. Because of them, our stay was not terribly upsetting.

Dont goto this resort

I will say - the staff here overall did the best they could. The food and drinks were terrible. We actually ended up going out for dinner or lunch. And went to the grocery store to buy beer and wine. The rooms were run down and outdated. Getting new towels on a daily basis proved to be very frustrating. Getting bottled water was also frustrating. The pools are not heated. The hot tub was heated 1 of the 7 days we were on the resort. The splash area with waterslides was so dirty that one of the members of our group contracted an eye infection while in the pool. I would not return. I would not recommend this resort to anyone.

Disappointed

I write these detailed reviews as I read a lot of reviews before deciding on a resort and I find them to be very helpful. I hope that my reviews will help others. If you do not want to read the whole thing, long story short is we would not go back to Sunscape Cove. Check-in/Check-out: We were in the Sun Club, so we supposedly got expedited check-in/check-out. We checked out the night before leaving and nobody was there, so we didn’t get/need any preferential treatment. Both went very smoothly. Check-in took longer as they had us in two rooms with double beds and one was supposed to be a king. Check-out was pretty quick. The only thing that took a bit was that we had to fill out surveys. We did check out the night before which was very convenient. We called for bags to be picked up the last morning and they were there promptly. Room: When we got there, there was not one single towel in either of our rooms. We had to ask two different times before we got any. Then, there were no wash cloths, so we had to ask again for those. One of our rooms had three people in it and they only left towels for two people every day. One plus is there were several outlets in the rooms. That is unusual for hotels/resorts. The curtains were not blackout curtains. One of the room doors did not close well and it had to be pulled very hard to close it. Staff left it open one day. I happened to walk past it when leaving my room and saw it open. I know the guy that stocks the fridge and the guy picking up room service dishes both came by just before that. Carlisha, our housekeeper, was very nice and helpful and did a good job. Our patio door was left unlocked one day, however. We were on the ground floor, so that was not good. The water temperature goes from scalding hot to freezing cold back and forth over and over throughout showers. I had a completely cold last half of my shower on the first day. This is dangerous with children. Even as adults, it was hard to keep from getting burned. Air conditioning worked well and we were comfortable most of the time. It was a little too warm in the bathroom as the AC unit aimed into the room and not toward the bathroom. Yes, the rooms showed some wear, but I do not expect them to always look freshly remodeled. They definitely could use some rugs/mats in the room. It is all tile with nothing to step on when you have sand on your feet or if your feet are wet. It was extremely slippery. Then, you go to get into bed and your feet have sand and whatever else on them because there is nowhere to wipe them. You definitely do not want to waste a towel on that as you will not have enough. There was water dripping from the ceiling of our closet. It seemed to be coming from a light fixture and dripped onto the upper shelf and down onto the bench. Therefore, we had to keep all our hanging clothes crammed into the corner and could not use the bench. We told the butler, but nothing was done about it. The bathroom needs more counter space and the lighting is awful. Food: We went to the buffet the first night since it was too late for reservations and dressing up (more on that later). They were already out of cups and the water was out at the buffet by 7:15. The cups were all tiny kids’ cups. By 7:30, there were no plates and people were standing around waiting for them and swarmed the small stack they finally brought out. They did not replenish the food. The salad bar was nothing like we have had at other resorts. The other nights, we had reservations for dinner since we paid for the butler service. We had to wait 20 minutes for a table the first night at Seaside even with reservations. At Seaside, they ran out of food by the second seating. The waiter got our order wrong at Seaside, but he was very apologetic and fixed it quickly. He brought my husband two plates of his entrée as it was a small portion. My husband never asked for that. I failed to get his name, but he did a good job. The second night, we went to Portofino and we waited about 15 minutes for a table even with a reservation. Our waitress at Portofino was rude when she got my order wrong. Her name was Chryselle. I pointed out that I was supposed to get soup and she argued with me and pulled out her paper to show me and told me that she wrote as I spoke. Well, I know for a fact I ordered it and the rest of my family heard it too. Mistakes happen and I was not rude about pointing it out, but she certainly did not handle that well. I was shocked that she acted that way and just turned away and she then said she would bring me some. The food at Portofino was not good. Two of us ordered pasta and it was cold pasta with watered down tomato sauce. It was not even worth eating. The menu there was confusing as there were appetizers mixed in with the entrees. We tried to figure out which was which and when my son ordered the waitress snapped at him that he was ordering two entrees and she would bring them if he could eat that much. For one thing, my husband had just ordered two things from the entrees, but one was an appetizer, and she did not comment on that. There was no need to snap at my son. She could have let us know nicely. On the other hand, Samantha was our server at Gohan and she was excellent even though they were extremely busy. Gohan was, by far, the best food and service we had. The food everywhere else was rarely hot and was cold a lot of the time. However, at Gohan, we finally had hot food/plates. One thing I have always loved about Jamaica is the fresh fruit. It was not good here, so I stopped getting it after the first couple times. They need to have someone at all of the restaurants that fills water glasses. The wait staff obviously does not have time to do it because ours were empty a lot every night at dinner. They really should have reservations for everyone. We saw people waiting hours for tables and that is not something anyone wants to do when on vacation but especially not with children. Some were getting quite angry with the staff when they had to wait so long and there were many empty tables you could see in the restaurant. If they are short on staff, they need to hire more. The hostesses obviously did not know how to handle the angry guests properly either. Dress Code: The dress code is not even close to enforced at the restaurants. This was not fair to those of us that followed the rules and packed extra clothes in order to conform to the dress code. I have no problem with no dress code; however, if you are going to have one, enforce it. Coco Café: It was hit or miss with workers there. The lady there in the evenings was always nice and helpful, but they needed more than one person working. They did have some good desserts there. They were most always out of cookies or only had a few left. I guess that is due to all of the kids there and them being self-serve, but they really should replenish things. Water: They are very stingy with bottled water. Thankfully, I had read this on other reviews and we bought some cheap sports water bottles to bring with us and filled them up at the buffet. The cups were always tiny little plastic kids’ cups, so you needed four of them to even make it worth walking up there to get water and going back to your table. Drinks: We do not drink alcohol, so I cannot comment on that. The mixed drinks without alcohol were good. Beach Towels: They only allow one beach towel per person and you have to check them out. The towel shack was not convenient to the Cove side either. We had a butler, so he brought our beach towels to us the first two days, but we still could only go exchange them for one each. The one time we did go to exchange for dry towels, they were out. Only having one towel is not good when you want to lie on one and have one to dry off with. Beach: We saw no beach waiters. I have never been to an all-inclusive without beach waiters. Other reviews mention them, but I never once saw one and we were on the beach all day for three days. Garcia was the bartender at the Cove beach bar and he did an excellent job and always remembered what we liked. The people that filled in for him when he went to lunch were not nice or helpful and just sat there. When they finally stood up, they acted inconvenienced. As other reviewers have said, the beach was not cleaned up regularly. There was always trash around. There were also a lot of rocks on the beach where people would stub their toes or step on them not knowing they were there. They did not always clean up the old towels from the chairs. I assume they leave them out knowing someone needs them to turn back in since you have to sign them out. I would advise water shoes in the ocean or your feet will get beat up. “Water Park”/Pools: The lazy river had hardly any tubes and nobody was keeping guests from taking them to the other pools or beach. There was supposedly a rule to not take them from there. We told our butler and he said we just have to wait around and snag one. We could only see a handful of tubes (like six) on the lazy river anyway. We walked by the lazy river late at night and there were only five tubes locked up and one floating. THAT IS ALL. On the last day, my youngest really wanted to try to do the lazy river (since they had never been able to get a tube), so they went to look for a tube and they finally found ONE. He got in and the water did not even move…maybe a tiny bit. My oldest had to walk through and push my youngest on the tube. When they finally found a second tube, they had to push along the sides and paddle to move through the river. That is NOT a lazy river. (Or maybe it is a VERY lazy river.) During the day, VERY few people were in the water park area. It is boring. There is nothing to do except two slides and five tubes for hundreds of people. It is also only open 10-5 which is ridiculous. The pools were so cloudy. My adult son and another man lost sunglasses at end of slide and could not find them. The lifeguard just pointed at some goggles on side of the pool to use to find them. He was not helpful. My son could not see bottom until right on it and feeling around for it with goggles on. That is just nasty. Meanwhile, people just kept being sent down the slide to slam into my son and the other man while they were looking for their glasses. Someone could get hurt. When my youngest was going down the slide, he got stuck in the middle due to the shirt he had on and they went ahead and let an adult man go down behind him and he ended up running into my son with his feet and pushing my son the rest of the way and then going in the water on top of him. That should never happen. They should not advertise this resort as having a water park. It is awful and you cannot call it a water park. My son had a rash the day we left and it had to be from the nasty water. When they were walking around looking at the lazy river, there was a drain in the floor and the cover was gone and my son stepped in it. I am honestly shocked at the reviews saying the water park is fun. They must be reviewing the wrong resort. I cannot imagine that being fun for any small children. Butler: Our butler was Patrick for both rooms. When we first met him, he told us he was the head butler and that we are to tip the butler on the last day. We already paid for that service and the resort also says tips are included. Of course, if you are going to plan on a tip on the last day, you should probably do a good job. That is all I am saying. Our main reason for paying for the butler was for dinner reservations. We read on other reviews that you cannot get reservations without a butler and you could wait 45 minutes to an hour or more every evening for dinner unless you went to the buffet (no thanks, we did that once and that was enough). Since we had our kids with us, we did not want to be sitting around waiting. It was also the holidays and we assumed it would be busy. We were only there for 4 nights and did not want to spend time waiting in line for dinner, so we decided the butler service would be nice, in addition to the other things they are supposed to provide. The third night, we wanted to eat at Gohan. We called and told Patrick that in the morning. We talked to him three more times throughout the day and asked each time if dinner reservations were done and he said yes. He then called us at 5:50 (reservation was at 7:00) to say we had to change, which means he screwed up. Our family was really looking forward to that meal. We later found out that Gohan was CLOSED, so he could have never made reservations there in the first place, so he LIED three times that our reservations were taken care of. We should have been told the first night what restaurants were closed which nights, etc. We were seated outside on the third night probably because we got the reservation at the last minute. Seats were never saved for us at the beach like he said he would. We were never brought an ice chest of drinks like he said he would bring. Not one single day. The only thing he did was randomly bring drinks to us the first day and they were not even drinks my kids wanted. The kids did get the tall fancy glasses and we got the small kids’ cups which was weird. The main thing he was interested in was upselling us on things like tennis, fishing, etc. Patrick supposedly set up a private lesson (that we had to pay cash for) one morning with the tennis pro for one of our sons and he waited 35 minutes and he never showed up. I finally called Patrick and he said to have him leave and he would call the guy. He then called us a couple hours later and said to go to the tennis court. The guy said Patrick never called him back with a time. Shocking. He was not very available, even though he would say he would come find us when we called him. He sure was on us the last night when he wanted his tip. We were napping and he knocked on the front door, asked our kids where we were, knocked on the back door, called the cell phone he provided us and called our room over and over. He offered no apology when he was told he woke us up. We paid for four nights of butler service for two rooms. He basically grouped us together and we definitely did not get our money’s worth. He was only there 10-6 also. At other all-inclusives, we were given a back-up for when our regular butler was not there, but our regulars were always there very long hours. He also was off the last evening and morning, but we were given no alternative. If we pay for 4 nights of butler service, we should get that. If he will be gone the last 18 hours of our vacation, we should not have to pay for all of that. The first day, Patrick did bring our towels after we asked him and housekeeping for it. He also brought beach towels for us two of the four nights. We asked for extra pillows multiple times over the first two days and finally got them the second night, although not as many as we asked for. Staff: We have been to two other all-inclusives in Jamaica (including their sister property, Secrets, just down the street) as well as others in other countries and one reason we love to come back to Jamaica is the people. They have always been so friendly, upbeat and interested in chatting with the guests. This trip changed that. A lot of the staff was not friendly. They did not go out of their way to say hello. They would almost run us over and not say excuse me or apologize. They would try not to make eye contact so you would not ask them to do something. It was completely unbelievable compared to our other experiences. If they are hoping for tips, they are going about it the absolute wrong way. Sun Club: We paid for the upgrade to the Sun Club as we wanted to have room service, lounge, faster check-in/check-out, etc. The lounge was pitiful. There were a few little snacks out and coffee was there sometimes. The main time we want coffee is in the mornings and the coffee machine was not even out in the mornings, so we had to go fight the other people (that do not know how a line works) to get coffee at the café. Most times, the lounge was dark. It was also very small. On the last day, there was NOTHING out in there, no food or drinks. It was pretty nonexistent. We did like our rooms being on the quieter side of the resort and having room service and expedited check-in. Otherwise, there was really no point in paying more for the Sun Club. Room Service: Room service took a lot longer than they said most days but came early one day. They always said it would be 45 minutes. The food was good. There was not a very good selection on the menu. Loud Music: There was loud music at the resort, but it would stop by 11:00 at the latest. However, there was very loud music very late at night and into the morning hours (I woke up at 3:30 one morning and it was still going on). It seemed to come from the other side of the east part of the Cove. I am not sure what can be done about that, but it was loud enough to keep us from sleeping. I hope this review was helpful.

Love the COVE!

We just enjoyed a fabulous 2 weeks at the Subscape COVE. Our daughter is 4 and she couldn’t have been happier... tons of pools and activities, incredibly warm greetings throughout the resort and lots of other 4year olds - she always had a friend. The water slides are a ton of fun. Our first priority is our daughter’s experience and Sunscape doesn’t disappoint. For parents, the COVE is a haven... the perfect boutique setting for complete relaxation. The subtle 2-story building is what we love in the Caribbean . Our junior suite was spacious and comfortable. Lorna, the manager, runs a tight ship and ensures every guest is happy at the COVE . She is very present and welcoming. Lorna always easily finds a solution. Chrisann at the front desk is efficient and also a great problem solver. She goes above and beyond to please. The COVE has the 2 best restaurants- both managed by Albert. He ensures guests receive the best service. The kitchen is run by Conrad who takes pride in his cuisine and his chefs. The food is great thanks to him. Within he resort, Oshane (Room service) and Stephen (beach bar service) really stand out. They always put a smile on your face and jump in anywhere to help out. Our only frustration during our stay was getting beach towels (they always seemed to run out) but management identified the issue and changed the process which fixed the problem. Overall, we had a fantastic 2 weeks and saw a great improvement in the level of service since last year. The general manager, Oscar , is very present throughout the resort and pays great attention to detail. He has clearly increased the level of the hotel in the past year. We came back rested and happy. We look forward to our next trip to Sunscape!
