Apple Vacations Traveller Reviews
Not what we expected
CAMERON P.
Jan 02 2019
Our experience at the St James Club at Morgan Bay was disappointing. We had never traveled to Islands in the Caribbean before, but had visited Islands and summer destinations throughout the South Pacific, SE Asia and Europe. We were really looking forward to it. I will break the review into three parts, Hotel, Staff, Location. We were a party of nine, two families travelling together. Hotel. After a 90 minutes transfer from the airport, we were greeted with what can only be described as a confrontational check in process. With a demand for paperwork, and a raft of forms to complete. The check in staff member was rude and unapologetic. We had requested adjoining rooms so our families, one with younger children, could stay connected. Our Apple rep had made the statement dont accept check if adjoining rooms are not provided. That is tough as there are no adjoining rooms in our category. None, they do not exist. Had we known that, we would not have chosen this property. We certainly would have expected Apple Vacations to know this. Next were the rooms. Basic and tired is an accurate description. Old furnishing, white walls, tile floors. Door jams split, non functioning curtains and loose/broken taps and fittings. Our Category was described as Beachfront, which of course they were not as there is no beach. Just a rock breakwater. Waterfront yes, beachfront, no. Yes, we brought all these things to the attention of management with zero resolution and very limited care. Staff at the resort I will split in two. Male and Female. Almost without exception the male staff were friendly, helpful and just wanted to ensure we were having a good time. On the other hand, we were amazed at the poor attitude of the female staff. In general, they were rude, seemed very disinterested with their jobs and unhappy. This extended from the front desk to the wait staff. We didnt know if this was cultural, but was very off-putting. We also fell into a rookie mistake. On check in, we were introduced to the activities guy. He was represented as the go to for all activities and to help book activities on the Island. He was also introduced at the hotel orientation meeting. We later found out, after many promises were broken, that he is a third-party sales guy and nothing to do with the hotel. You can draw your own conclusions about how that relationship works. We spent a number of hours unwinding his failed attempts to book tours and went direct with a much better result. All the tours he did book for us were billed to our rooms through the hotel. All very sketchy. We took this to the hotel booking desk and they denied any endorsement or connection, however we continued to see this guy on property and at the orientation meetings. Location. Being our first time in the Caribbean, we had visions of white sandy beaches and long walks. Not here. Beach is very small, and not very clean. Grey sand and cloudy water. There is a tiny swimming area, right next to the watersports area, so there are catamarans, commercial boats and the waterski and banana boats coming and going all day. It was OK for a cool off, but not really the kind of water you felt clean swimming in. Maybe this is all the Caribbean has to offer, but I doubt it. We chatted to a lot of guests while there and also stood side by side at the front desk hearing the same kind of feedback we had. Overall disappointing. We made the most of it but wont be back.

Check in very generic. Orientation really lacking, had to figure out how to maneuver restaurant reservations, main restaurant was buffet and not good at all..food cold. The better place, the pier, we could only get into one night. Many made large reservations which hurt couples getting in. The beach was small but pools.nice.

I have written a detailed letter in regards to my stay but the gist of it is that the resort did not come close in comparison to all inclusive resorts that I have stayed at in the past. On top of that it was also more expensive than the others. Brief list of issues: -first room had mold, leaking ceiling, no iron, no refrigerator -second room deadbolt didn't work, no alarm clock -room refrigerator were not stocked -service was poor at restaurants -took forever to get drinks -beach had brown murky water -not enough beach chairs -adult only pool had kids all over -entertainment was subpar

Overall rating very good. 400-block of rooms (deluxe ocean view} is very good. A problem one afternoon and evening when the music from the Palm Tree pool blasted full force from noon until 1 AM. The complaint was made and hopefully they will be more considerate in the future. Ortherwise a beautifull place to stay and relax.

This is largely a very good resort. The food is quite good and there is lots of variety. My only serious concern was the treatment of a friendly and seemingly healthy stray dog who frequented the pool areas. One security staff member who had been incorrectly told that the dog had entered the pool came along and kicked her to get her to leave. A couple of days later, the same dog was walking by another pool when another staff member picked up her front legs and started dragging her as he walked backwards, then awkwardly tried to carry her before finally putting her down and letting her run away. I understand that dogs are not welcome (by some people) and must not be allowed to enter a pool but they must be handled kindly and responsibly. This callous behaviour is unacceptable and can cause injuries to the animals. Please train the staff on how to handle strays.

Comfortable resort!

Just returned from a 2 week vacation at this resort. First week was last week of spring break for us. Definitely busier the first week but still plenty of chairs around the beach and the pool and lots of space and did not feel crowded like some other big resort. We had a room in the older part of the resort. I liked being closer to the beach. Downfall is that these rooms do not have any access to internet and you must go to the Sunset lounge or lobby. The internet speed there was satisfactory. Room is a bit dated- could use a bit of "refresh" to improve aesthetic but the bed was very comfortable, the water is warm, good AC etc. TV is a bit small when you consider how far from bed, difficult to see. But very important to mention that it did not interfere with my comfort in anyway and the room and rest of the resort is kept very clean! WE received excellent service at all restaurant from all. Our favorite staff there was Malcom and Solomon (still in training but very good). Valerie took our reservation for a la carte and was very helpful and pleasant to deal with! WE booked a few tours to visit the Island. Some trough our WestJet rep and others trough the hotel. I preferred the tours books via the hotel excursion desk. The ones handled in house via 'the pink panther" were my favorites. Ozzy, the manager of recreation came along and along with the driver, made it fun and we were well looked after. I would have done more with them if I knew this before. The pink panther jeep is well outfitted with good seats and seat belts, nothing to worry about! The pools are nice: kept very clean everyday, water at a pleasant temperature. Near the beach, one pool is for adult, one for kids and activities. Near the new buildings up the hill, there is another small infinity pool for adults only. There is a pool near the gym and kids club for kids with slide etc. Also a nice snack bar opened until about 5 pm. (nice hidden gem...) BBQ near the pier: best BBQ ribs and briskets, yammy! Beach: kept nice and clean also. The sand in St Lucia is naturally brown. Also a bit stormy while we were there so the water not as clear as I would have expected because of this. Food: 3 nice a la carte restaurant. All served different menus with a good variety of choices and we liked them all. A good selection of food also at the buffet and it was good. I found that on some nights, some of the dishes were not that warm. The lines were never that long and the service was very good. Activities: lots of planned activities, including free hobbie cat lessons, water skiing, banana boat rides etc! This resort puts lots of effort in improving what they have: BBQ hut recently opened, new bar near the beach just opened on our last day, etc. I would not hesitate to return or recommend to anyone who travels as a family or a couple. Enough areas to cater to both groups without any problem.

Currently still here til Friday, it can’t come soon enough. Came here with high hopes. We have been working non-stop for months and needed a break ASAP! Trying something new was NOT the way to go. Yes, some of the staff is friendly but now acting different because you aren’t tipping them over every little move you make. Which I believe is unprofessional. There is one “Superman” worker that goes above and beyond anyone else that we have met and that’s Alpha. Made a few friends here and all seemed to think the same. He deserves all the praises because he’s just phenomenal. Beach is NOT as pictured. Decent size but it is not turquoise, nor see through, as Caribbean water should be. Water seems murky, sandy and plenty of sea weed. Rooms themselves are in need of updating but not terrible. Would have been nice to know two weeks before when the all inclusive hotel called to collect their payment for the meals that they would be doing construction! All day long it’s generators, power washers, weed wackers , saws, hammers, banging banging and more banging. If we are by the pool kids screaming.. by the beach it’s golf carts rattling engines... definitely not getting the serene, peaceful vacation I was thinking this was going to be. Food.. depending on what you are use too on vacation, is whether you’ll enjoy it or not. For my husband and I, not really liking anything. And there are rules, such as you can’t book reservations for a restaurant you have already been too. Because you have to be fair to everyone :/ I swear, this is not a joke. My husband got told off by a waitress today because he took a piece of food from the buffet and didn’t know what it was, but he didn’t like it when he sat down and tried it. When the attendant arrived and saw the small piece of meat left in his plate she said, “what’s wrong with you, you didn’t like the lamb? That’s my favorite”. That’s nice. But you don’t tell a guest that. We can eat what we wish and not eat what we don’t like. Last but not least, though it was a good idea to get a massage on the first day. Massage was great, but ended terribly when she plopped fire hot towels on the top of my feet which burned off my skin. Literally bubbled my skin. Not a sorry was said. But she sold me a jar of heavy moisturizer to put on the burn. Two days later still hurts but definitely helped. Thank?! 😒

One week vacation with my wife and other couple. Found the resort to be as expected from the information provided online. Accommodations and staff very pleasant and professional and would have no hesitation in returning in the future.

Just returned from St James for the second time and we were happy once again. It all starts when you arrive with staff like Jovene. They literally can't do enough to make your stay memorable. Easy to make reservations for dinner and the food was great at every restaurant. Fantastic beach service and quick service at all other bars. The sunsets did not disappoint, just beautiful. We has a beachfront room, hands down one of the best beds I have slept in and the pillows were outstanding. Make sure you join Joy's cruises for a great day of cruising, snorkelling and the mud baths! Beach was well maintained, so much to do in the water sports area including water skiing! They are all committed to ensuring you enjoy your time at this wonderful resort and they did not disappoint!
