Good option for a decent price.

Overall, the hotel appears to be kept up and maintained...it's a little older, but that adds to its charm. Wish the beach was kept a bit cleaner, but overall we spent most of our time there. Don't bother with the specialty restaurants, especially Sir George's--the food was disgusting. The buffet was the best option. The drinks are plentiful! But the shows at night are PHENOMENAL! Definitely worth grabbing a table after dinner--every show was fantastic!

We love staying at the Riu Hotels. The only thing our group of 12 said they wish was better is the beds are very hard and pillows could be softer. Other than that we had an amazing stay

We did not get the two double beds we requested, we had a king and a sofa...that was not good for the roommate situation. We were told there were no other rooms available to move to. The pool was cloudy and dirty, I do have to say there were ALOT of people in the pool every day but they needed to clean around the pool area and do a better job with the pool water to keep it clean and clearer!.They also could have used another waiter around the pool, it seemed like there was only one each day. They did have a separate pool for kids which was really nice. The food was the best I have ever had at a resort so very pleased with that.

They didn't seem to lean up the beach area very well. There were a lot of straws and cigarette butts on the beach.

The guacamole was horrible. It was just smashed up avocado. No fresh ingredients as you would expect in a guacamole. The food was so bad that we went out to eat quite a few times. The hotel can definitely benefit from some updating as the room seemed pretty worn down. The bed and pillows were very uncomfortable. The pool, staff and drinks were its only saving grace.

All of the staff that we encountered was very welcoming, friendly and helpful. The room accommodations were nice except the pillows were flat. We requested either better or a few more and they brought up more right away. The fitness center is a nice room but the equipment needs to be updated. The beach and the number of chairs was fantastic. The pools were nice but it was hard to get a chair as people were saving chairs early. The entertainment was pretty good for the most part every show was entertaining. The adult games were fun. The food in the restaurants was very good. There was such a good variety of choices that you could always find something that you like. The service was very good. The maid service was excellent. had one problem with the one restauarant as they required colared shirt and long pants for the men. When it is 90 degrees out with very high humidity the last thing you want to do is wear long pants. Very outdated rule.

Because they did not want to use a second bus . Hotel is old we asked if they would turn on the fans at the flamingo steakhouse and he said they did not work. Food was great but we did not enjoyed it due to the heat fans would have helped. At the hotel disco club we requested music but we did not get honored because DJ said he did not have internet access

Shocking hotel , don’t stay there whatever the price .

OK , so we got a Black Friday deal but I still feel ripped off . The place is like a zoo . A dining room that felt like a school hall , queues for the other restaurants at night which we couldn’t even get in to . You don’t have to book they said . Oh yes you do ..... Two sittings and that’s it . I’m on holiday and want to eat when I want , not when someone tells me . If you like getting up in the dark you may just be lucky enough to secure a sunbed . The drinks are like water with no substance and the staff couldn’t give a monkeys . The room and bathroom were old so don’t let them tell you it’s 5 star . Plus points - breakfast , the rooms are clean and they stock Beefeater Gin but make sure you ask for it . The area’s amazing and we’ll be going back . Look out for the Marina and the Romantic zone in Valletta and a cab will cost you about £8 . Oh ! The Bellboys at the hotel were fantastic too .

Nice Christmas and new year break.

We went for Christmas and new year. Hotel is dated but I loved the charm of the decor. Rooms were spotless. Hotel staff from cleaners to top notch were brilliant. The food was excellent and the shows were good. We only ate at the main buffet restaurant as plenty of choice and it suited us. If you visit just remember it’s not a new modern hotel its a hotel with lots off character. There are a lot of reviews saying the beach is dirty it’s true but I saw a lot of people not using ashtrays on the beach and not putting their rubbish in the bins, so I believe it’s down to guests that are lazy. You also get people trying to sell you stuff on the beach I found if you just politely tell them no thanks they don’t pester you. The sea is not clear. We didn’t use the pools as I prefer the sea so can’t comment on them. Xmas eve dinner was very busy but the fresh crabs and prawns were to die for. The new year eve dinner was excellent lobster as well as crabs and prawns. The staff do a great job off looking after you. Every day a different animal on the bed made from towels. If your bed is to hard ask for a topper and if your pillows are not firm enough ask they will do what ever is in their power to make you happy. Sometimes in the restaurant it’s crazy busy, but the staff in there will try to help you.Yolanda excellent. I have to say my favourite staff member was Vanessa in the show bar, she doesn’t stop, I sat watching her work she remembers what you drink and I have seen her mix so many different drinks. All the staff work hard so tip them if you get good service. I am a firm believer that if you get good service tip but don’t tip to get good service. I loved this hotel and can’t wait to go back.

Not a 5 Star Resort
Sugaree76, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

I had high hopes for the Riu Vallarta since it is listed as a 5 star resort on the Riu Website, where I booked it. We travelled the first week in December. We were booked to stay at week, but left after 2 nights because we were not happy with the resort at all. CONS: -when you check in, they didn't explain anything to us, such as how to connect to wifi etc... The website says "free wifi in common areas." My son and husband hooked up their devices first and when I tried to hook up mine, it said we had reached the limit. I called down to reception about it and they said that the free wifi is only on the first 2 devices. No one told us that and it is not mentioned on their website. So, because I was the emergency contact for our pets at home, I had to turn on my roaming and get charged an arm and a leg in order to be available in case of emergency. -we arrived around mid-afternoon and the beach restaurant was just starting to close down so all we got was some leftover french fries. When we asked where we could eat, we were told there are 24 hour snacks in the sports bar. The "snacks" were pre-packaged, refrigerated burgers, hot dogs and pasta dishes that looked like they had been there forever and a microwave oven next to the fridge so you can heat up your food. It was gross, I have 3 kids, they ate nothing and we went up to the room to wait for the dinner restaurants to open. I've been to 3 star resorts where the 24 hour snacks meant an actual person grilling up a burger or some quesadillas for us. The food options here were awful and my kids ate a sandwich we had leftover that I had packed for the plane ride. -The resort was not kept very clean. There were garbage bins overflowing a lot with many bees surrounding them. I've never experienced this at any other resort. -The people in the buffets were like savages picking up food with their hands and just eating it right from the buffet station. I'm talking about guests here not staff. It's like no one had any manners. -The pool wasn't heated and was freezing -there weren't enough lounge chairs near the beach so I pulled one up so I could sit next to my daughter, who was making sand castles. One of the staff members came and rudely told me to put it back and that if I wanted to sit there then I should sit on the ground. -The website says they offer a complimentary intro diving lesson in the pool. This was one of the reasons we chose this hotel, as our kids wanted to try scuba diving. When we went to the watersports centre, they said they no longer offer that due to some insurance issues. -The wrist bands are annoying -the towel cards are not something you see in a "5 star" resort -Not enough towels or linens in the room for a family of 5 -the room keys have the actual room number written on them so if you lose your room key, anyone can go into your room since the number is engraved right onto it. I've never seen that at any hotel. PROS: -the beach was nice and had no small rocks. It had a large shallow area, which is great for children. There is a long beach to walk on and vendors if you are interested in buying something. I would say the beach is the only thing I liked about this resort If you want a 3 star hotel, then this Riu is for you. If you want a 5 star hotel, go to the Now Amber in Pto. Vallarta. That's where we went for the last 5 nights of our stay and we were so happy we did. It was a little more money, but so worth it for the quality we received. This was my first stay at a Riu resort, and based on this stay, I would not go to another Riu as I was extremely disappointed.

Not good for a relaxing vacation

We’re currently here for our honeymoon and wish we picked a different resort. Pros: Nice spot on the beach, beautiful sunsets. Staff are very friendly, helpful and nice. Cons: SUPER noisy resort. The disco right in the middle of the resort is so loud at night. Starts around 8pm with games, then a band until 11ish and then dancing until 2am. The speakers are just cranked and makes it so difficult to sleep or relax. The hallways are so loud in your room you hear everything and everybody walking around. Food is so-so, really greasy. Rooms need new furniture; bed has no support, sheets are super itchy, couch is really worn out and looks gross. This resort would be ideal for a group of people wanting to drink and party all the time.
