It was good

The place is very nice and the staff are excellent. I believe that it will undergo some remodeling in the spring or summer. One thing I would suggest is key cards for the rooms instead of a metal key with a huge piece of hard plastic, reminds me of a restroom key at a roadside gas station that has a tire rim attached so as to not lose the key. It is bulky. Everything and everybody else is excellent. The beds are hard but they will give you a mattress topper if you request it. There is not any complementary toiletries, just a bar of soap for hand washing and liquid soap in the shower.

Hotel check in personnel couldn't understand English that well and were not personable. Restraurants were not up to expectation. Not enough variety, staff were not friendly. Buffet food was really good and had 1 waitress that was friendly. Steak house was a great disappointment on both food and service. Waiter tried to pick up plate before we were finished eating. Bars didn't open until after 6 PM and bartenders never had a smile or a kind word to us. There were two evening bar waiters in the commons area that were excellent on service and attitude toward all. The instructor for the wind sailing lessons was great, friendly and helpful. Will never recommend this hotel to anyone.

My wife and I went on our honeymoon after 26 years of marriage. We had a good time in Vallarta and enjoyed the nice weather, beach, pools , food and the hotel staff. I would recommend this for anyone who needs to get away from the winter blah and enjoy some all around good times.

Hotel Overbooked

We had some issues, we booked ocean view rooms, but had to have a standard rooms the first night, then be switched to the ocean view we booked. At first the hotel wanted to switch us to the Pacifico, which is not what we wanted, so wasted time the first day and part of the second day dealing with the changes.

Nice hotel. All inclusive. Food was fair in the buffet restaurant, as most buffet restaurants are, so we weren't surprised. Food was better in the sit down restaurants. Our room had a musty smell when we walked in, but got better after we opened up the patio door. Bar service was excellent. As a matter of fact, ALL service people were friendly, and accommodating. Hotel was very clean, and it was easy to see that much energy was spent on cleaning, and appearances. Beach area could have been policed a little better. Cigarette butts all over the place. Nighttime music was good, but would have like some more easier listening, or softer music, as it went later in to the night. Overall, good thoughout the resort, however.

Pool and beach bar tenders were sometimes happy and sometime not. We were told reservations were not needed for specialty restaurants but were turned away from one that had plenty of open tables. However we really do like this hotel and will go back.

In need of a remodel
DUSTIN M.
Feb 22 2018
The hotel is in need of a remodel. The rooms are musty smelling and the beds are not comfortable at all. The pillows are so tiny, almost travel size type pillows. A large chunk of concrete fell off the edge of the pool deck while we were there and maintenance quickly put on a temporary patch. Poolside and beach are very crowded and literally impossible to find open chairs unless you reserve them by 6 am. Food was average and dinner restaurants fill quickly if you aren’t in line 1/2 hour before they open.

Another fabulous week at the RIU Vallarta

Feb 10 2018
This was our second visit to the RIU Vallarta. We chose to go back because we had such a great time last year. Again this year was wonderful, we upgraded to a suite this year and it was well worth it. The room was beautiful and the location was perfect for us. From the time we arrived until we left the staff could not do enough for us. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Yes it is a little older but that is what makes it so charming. I love the old world look instead of all the modern stuff out there. I have heard that a refurb is planned for 2019 I can only hope they keep some of the charm. We are already planning on going back next year! Thank you for a great week!!!

the food at the buffets often continues to be cold to tepid. The linens in our room were old and threadbare. The pillows were so lumpy they felt like bags of rags. I also thought the overall quality of the food was below our previous visits

this hotel was rated at platinum. The hotel is ok but not platinum. the staff are amazing and cant do enough for u to make your stay comfortable. 2 weeks there was too long for me as the same thing everyday. we did visit the flea market and went to downtown which was amazing to meet the locals and go shopping. me and my partner ended up with a cold and the couple we went with, second week we all where ill went to the local doctors and spent most of our time stuck in bed. our neighbor a elderly couple from Canada spent there day feeling sick. think something was going around the hotel as the staff and guests where coughing.

Hate to wine...

When the wine is not drinkable, I tend to whine. Riu Vallarta is a lovely (if a bit tired) hotel situated in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. The lobby is a grand space filled with interesting and varied art and architectural features - in a good way; however, it is due for a refresh. The a la carte restaurants range from not great to downright awful. Sir George is Riu Vallarta’s fine dining experience and, as fine dining goes, it is barely passable. The Flamingo beach restaurant, however, is simply terrible. From the service to the food, apathy is the most accurate descriptor. Even during the confusing “lunch” service, a general lack of “give a damn” is readily apparent, which is unfortunate because the view of the beach and ocean is the best on the hotel property. The hotel’s main buffet is done well, though, with plenty of choices and an attentive staff. Overall food quality, if not excellent, was at least very good. This is easily the best choice for all of your dining, regardless of time of day. Back to the wine: unfortunately, over my seven-day stay, I did not ever find a good glass of red wine. Most of what was offered was actually not drinkable. It was not just bad, it did not taste like wine - easily the worst I’ve ever tasted. The white was not great but not terrible. I was also surprised to find that good coffee took some searching. You can order a decent cappuccino in dining areas and bars, but for a good standard drip coffee, you need to go to the “sport bar”. Coffee made there is good, even though the “atmosphere” is not one you want to spend much time in. Lastly, the Riu’s check-out procedure was ridiculous: over 100 people were told unceremoniously to line up for at least 25-30 minutes just to hand in our keys and let the hotel know we were leaving. Silly. Riu Vallarta has some work to do, but overall my wife and I did enjoy our stay. Puerto Vallarta’s weather was perfect for a beach holiday, and there were two somewhat crowded pools to cool off in. I hate to whine about wine, but the fact is, if you’re looking for a premium experience, the Riu Vallarta is not it; if you’re okay with buffet meals and beautiful weather, this just might be good enough.

Relaxing all-inclusive experience

We stayed at the Riu Vallarta in early December for five nights. We had debated whether to stay in Nuevo Vallarta or in the hotel zone in Puerto Vallarta, but ended up choosing the all inclusive in NV. In retrospect, I'm not sure that was the best decision as I would have liked to explore more of PV and we only made it to town once. It's a 30-45 minute cab ride each way to/from the PV malecon and about $26-$30 taxi round trip depending on where you get dropped off. We used Uber on return to Riu but must have been at a peak time as it wasn't that much cheaper than cab. But we did have a nice, relaxing time at the Riu. We had stayed at a Riu Palace in Playa del Carmen earlier in the year so kind of knew what to expect, although didn't know how much, if any, difference there would be in a non-palace vs palace. We visited both the Riu Jalisco and Riu Palace down the Nuevo Vallarta beach and ours was clearly the mid range one based on the grounds and lobby. But the Riu Vallarta was actually pretty nice. Nice beach with plenty of loungers and shade if you wanted it. Wide, clean beach in NV good for walking. Sometimes sand gets a bit pebbly underfoot on long walks but can move around and find softer stuff. Ocean water was fairly calm while we were there and people were out enjoying the water although there seemed to be a fairly strong undertow. We'd shift to the pool in mid afternoon and it was crowded but we could always find two chairs somewhere. Prime pool locations are claimed early in the day, but we didn't play that game as I prefer the beach anyway. One afternoon there was a fun band playing at the pool - can't remember their name but management should hire them at least once a week. They ended their set with Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. :) The food was hit or miss at the buffets and I was pretty tired of the selections after 6 days, but could always find something. Roasted or grilled chicken was good, and guacamole was good and plentiful. Had good mahi mahi and tuna one night. Best specialty restaurant food was the steakhouse by the beach enhanced by watching the beautiful sunset. It was definitely worth a visit. Nirvana (Japanese buffet) and King George (fancier a la carte) were just so-so. There was only one time at the buffets (at the Flamingo lunch buffet) where we saw any kind of shrimp, and both kinds offered that day were good. You'd think shrimp would be plentiful down there and served more often. (Shrimp was on dinner menu at steakhouse and Nirvana.) Only time I saw any ceviche was at Mexican night at the buffet, and no lobster ever like we had at the Riu Palace in Playa. But maybe that's one of the quality differences in the Riu levels. If you're really picky about food quality, it might be best to stay in town and eat out as I've heard PV restaurants are really good. But if you enjoy convenience of AI and like to stay in the "bubble", you will be able to find something to eat. We were upgraded to an ocean view junior suite, which was a nice room and we did enjoy watching a few sunsets off our balcony and having the extra space. Faced the courtyard and had noise from nightly shows, but they're over by 10:30. Our security safe malfunctioned on day 2, but maintenance was sent within 30 mins and quickly fixed it. Our room was fine though a bit dated. As everyone notes, the beds are super firm! But not uncomfortable to us. Our AC worked well and it only took a few days after getting home to air out that humidity smell from all belongings. Smell not nearly as bad as coming back from the Caribbean side. Lots of yellow-jackets buzzing around sweet drink areas by beach and pool, and also were in dessert buffet at beachside restaurant - yuck. Frozen drinks are super sweet but plentiful by beach and pool. Best nightly entertainment was during early evenings on the plaza. Sometimes a quiet band, one night a good opera-type singer and mariachis on Mexican night. A few of the actual main shows starting at 9pm were pretty lame but we missed the Michael Jackson one so can't speak for that. I did enjoy the Pre-Mexicana main show on Mexican night. Never made it to the disco. Hotel staff super friendly and helpful. Free shuttle provided by Riu to and from airport was efficient - if using Riu services, be sure to print off a copy of your transportation voucher for BOTH directions. All in all, a nice break from winter and Riu Vallarta was more than adequate and a good deal for the price.

very good weather and beach. Food was excellent, fresh, and lots of variety. But I would be looking for more gluten free choices. For next time I would prefer parts of an ocean view room. Entertainment was okay, I expected more.
