My husband and I just returned from a 5 day vacation at the Riu Palace Peninsula in Cancun. We got an excellent price for this time of year. Sunwing did a fantastic job no problems, thank you! We were hosted by the customer service rep and she was polite, very welcoming and provided us excellent service. The hotel was not at it's full capacity, and we were upgraded without any hassle to a full ocean view superior room which was beautiful, excellent views of the ocean and extremely clean. We had a small problem with the toilette but they were there to fix it within 5 minutes. Breakfast, excellent, fresh quality and taste. Great variety. Lunch, the bbq by the pool, excellent. The burger was huge and very satisfying. I could have had another, thats how good it was. The buffet, fresh and excellent, and large variety. We visited the Italian one afternoon. Excellent. We had the lamb, fettuccine with seafood and parpadelle pasta with osso buco. Excellent. Dinner, buffet fresh and lots to choose from, but i can understand that after the 3rd day, you needed to try something different. We visited the Epecurian, we had lobster bisque, seabass with coconut cream, both excellent. We also tried the filet and I didn't enjoy it as much. We visited the steak house, excellent, steak prepared well and lobster large and very moist. Would have loved to visit one more time. As you can see, we had no problems with the food in fact we gained about 8 lbs!! That's never happened before. WOW well worth it! Also we tipped every day for every meal and the servers appreciate it and they don't forget! After dinner, we were too tired to stay up at night because we were early risers but the entertainment one night was excellent Elvis performer and great dancing afterwards. The animation team were always entertaining, from the foam party to the water games and evening dancing and shows. The bar had excellent choices and never watered down. Coffee bar good latte's and cappuccinos but terrible espressos. The beach, well, I'm a beach person. Although we stayed most of the time by the beach, for some reason there was a lot of seaweed and made it extremely difficult to go for a swim. However, it did clear up one day and we got our fix. We did talk with others we met on the bus going home and they told us there was a problem everywhere including the Mayan, they got it worse. However, other than that, beach was quiet and relaxing and not to mention a lovely breeze from the ocean. Perhaps we would find no seaweed other times of the year. Also I should mention there were no mosquitoes or bugs anywhere and this is a big plus for me, during the day and night and we were also able to sleep under the stars one night for a couple of hours. No bites!!! We walked next door one day to the Caribe and had their oven pizza by the beach and it was pretty good for Mexico. However, the hotel, more of a party place i would never choose Caribe over a Palace hotel that's for sure. We took the local bus to Palace Las Americas, very safe in fact we got lost, and the people were always helping us find our way around. Because it is a Palace, we were able to stay and eat same as the hotel we were staying at, that was a great treat. I must add the food was excellent perhaps if I had to choose, it was much better than the Peninsula and the beach was breathtaking and no seaweed. I will definitely visit in the future but only if the price is wright. However, in my opinion, the Las Americas is more for 30+ year olds and the Palace Peninsula is more for both couples and also families with children and teenagers. Depending your age group I would choose Peninsula for family with children and Las Americas (adult only) for romance, quiet and classy. Although I must add, the Peninsula offered a choice of a private romantic beach fire lit dinner in a cabana by the ocean, very romantic. In conclusion, Cancun is safe, don't listen to everyone else. If you are minding your own business and be polite and kind, they will do same with you!! Thank you Riu Palace Peninsula, we returned from our vacation very satisfied with our choice of hotel and location and feeling recharged and relaxed. I will not hesitate to return. We look forward to our next visit.

Don’t Stay Here...try the Riu Palace Pas Americas or Riu Palace Riviera Maya

I never write online reviews of places because it’s just too time consuming, but I felt like I had to warn people about staying at this property. The staff was not very accommodating. We got here and the noise level from the children was above average. We asked if there was a quiet area or adults only section and they advised that the Riu Palace Las Americas was adults only and just down the street. I called and checked if they had availability and they did. Unfortunately because I booked through Orbitz/Expedia, I needed to go through them. Called Orbitz and they said that because I already checked in they were unable to modify the reservation and that the hotel should be able to swap my reservation. After a few back and forth they stated that “they couldn’t due to the politics of the hotel management between the properties;” whatever that means. Quickly, food was below par (not seasoned if at all, over cooked most of the time). Staff was not knowledgeable as to their policies. Hotel was in need of some general painting and repair. I tried other properties in the area for the day and my recommendation would be to stay at either the Riu Palace Las Americas (adults only) or Riu Palace Riviera Maya (allows children) in Playa del Carmen. Even though they’re Riu’s, the overall quality and hospitality are much better!

We stayed her for 4 nights in September. The room was lovely, although some of the furnishings were starting to show signs of wear and tear. The food was good, plenty choice, clean restaurant and attentive staff. The lobby area was spacious and very well air conditioned. Almost to the point of it being too cold. The coffee shop is a lovely touch and the bar and staff are friendly and give There were plenty of sunbeds when we were there and no need for reserving at all. Unfortunately, the pool area is very dirty in my opinion. There are berries on the trees around the perimeter of the pool area and the berries are left on the ground to get trodden in and then rot. There’s drains dotted about all over for the sudden rain and these were full of debris, like sharp metal bottle tops, clumps of hair, rubbish, etc. For a Riu Palace, I think it should have been cleaned more thoroughly. I never saw anyone clean the areas around the pools the whole time we were there. Everywhere inside is immaculately clean.

We arrived on the 16th September, flying from Manchester with TUI on the Dreamliner, for 2 weeks. Flight was great both ways, i would recommend flying with TUI. Check in on arrival was smooth and fast, was upgraded to the superior room which is a bigger room and double balcony, all rooms have a great view of the ocean. Hotel was very modern and always being cleaned, the hotel was always pristine! Rooms were cleaned everyday with clean linen and would have regular towel art which is a nice touch, mini fridge stocked up everyday as well as there amenities if you use them, we did tip every other day. Plenty of sun beds to go around, there was 16 of us the first week and we always managed to get together. Only pool we didn't try was the sports pool where they played games and activities otherwise we tend to just stay round the pool on the left hand side as you walk towards them. Infinity pool, really nice! Couldn't always get a sun bed though so might be an option to go down early and reserve, if not plenty of space round the other pools. BBQ was on everyday around the pool which had burgers, hotdogs, steak, chicken with salad and sauces, the burgers were actually really nice. Bar tender always coming round with drinks, again tipped often and was back and forth with drinks. Regular entertainment was on everyday, football, volley ball, bingo, zumba and silly games. On Wednesday's theres a foam/pool party in the infinity pool which starts at 3pm, this was actually really funny and we had good time, they have guitar soloists and saxophonist which sounds really good, was better than what i expected. Saturdays they have a beach party, didn't really attend this but watched the fire dancers and it was ok. Couldn't fault the weather the whole two week we was there, we had a couple of down pours but was brightening back up within ten minutes . Entertainment on a night could of been a bit better. We watched a sketch rock/pop show which was really good and watched an Elvis tribute which was terrible! To be honest we spent most nights either in the lobby bar or down at the beach bar which is nice little area with a sea breeze. They had other shows such as Michael Jackson which was meant to be good but missed it, and a mayan show. Plenty of cocktails and drinks to have, we had a lot of pink champagne and mimosas and loved the raspberry absolut with lemonade. We went to the sports bar a couple of times which is open 24hr with food and drink. Food was great! Big buffets to choose from with a mixture of everything. Restaurants were good too. I think my favourite was the fusion, husband said the steak was better than steakhouse. I think my least fav was the Mexican, but nothing to complain about. Husband loved the chicken wings in sports bar and the cheese toasties at the buffet! Only person what stood out too us was Salvador, was a lovely man and made us laugh on our wedding night, always there to help. Only excursions we did was coco bongos which is a must if you love a night out and a show, was brilliant! We did gold member which includes better seats and unlimited drinks all night. We did the captain hook pirate ship, this was ok, was a bit of a pirate show and disco but comes with a lovely meal. We adventured to the La isla shopping mall twice, really nice mall with bars and restaurants, stopped at Hooters for food and drinks. The Wedding I got married here on the 21st September and it was such an amazing day. My wedding coordinator was called Jennifer and had done every single detail perfect and couldn't fault what she had done. Communication before the wedding was always quick and prompt and nothing seemed too much trouble. The wedding was at 4pm, cocktail hour, semi private dinner in the steak restaurant and then on to the beach bar where we played music and games and was such a great day! If you want any details let me know! Would highly recommend a wedding here! So all in all, this hotel was brilliant and would recommend to anyone. Riu give me a unforgettable two weeks stay and an amazing wedding. If i was asked to go back i wouldn't hesitate!

Family vacation

My family and I had a lovely time at the Riu Palace Peninsula. We went the in September from the 15th to the 21st to celebrate my goddaughter's birthday and for a small family vacation. From the beginning it was made wonderful thanks to Karla at the front desk who upgraded all of our rooms so that we could have ocean front rooms on the 2nd floor. The rooms were clean and comfortably( thank you Deysi), but I have to agree that the room setup was a little odd with very little privacy. The food was good and plentiful. I would like to give a big thank you to Salvador and to all the waiters who made my goddaughter's birthday on the September 19th memorably. They not only provide great service but they sang to her ,and went out of their way to make her quinceanera special. I would also like to thank Judy or Judyd (sorry I am not sure on the spelling of her name) for wonderful service during breakfast. We had many other vary nice servers but I am unable to remember all of their names. I would also like to leave some words of advice If you are planning a trip to Mexico. 1. Tip- yes it is true if you tip you get much better service and therefore have a better vacation. 2. You must dress for dinner- while we were at the Riu we heard people( mostly drunk people) complain about this. For most people this is family time and not beach time so get clothing on or order room service. 3. Don't get stupid drunk- this is for anywhere you may find your self. The staff at the Riu can not help you if you have a problem if you are unable to listen to reason. 4. Go with an open mind and the attitude that you are going to have fun. I had a great time and I am already making plans to go back next year. Thank you all!!
