Great place for food and decor but the rest is quite poor with outright lies

No bellboy to greet or help with the luggage, you must carry your luggage from the bus drop off to inside the hotel. I had to place my own stickers on the suitcases. I was then given a map and told to go for something to eat because the room was not ready. When I returned I was given room keys and told the suitcases would follow shortly. 45 minutes later I phoned and was told that they would arrive shortly. “no internet connection” is the only message you get when you try to logon, when you ask they tell you that a new supplier has taken all the old system down and that the new system will work by the end of next month (do not believe the Riu site that tells you that they have WI-FI and that bathrobe & slippers in the room) clean beach towels are available at 8 AM and you can not bring your beach towel to your room, it must be turned in every afternoon. No bar service on the beach. This is a great place but certainly not what it is being marketed for and certainly not in the same league as the Paradisus or the Royalton Cons: So no bathrobes, no evening towel service, no bellhop when you arrive from airport, no secure or even segregated area for luggage until room is ready, no bar service on the beach, no internet other than lobby, no fresh beach towel until 8 AM, no privacy bathroom/bedroom, no help finding your room, terrible service at outside sitting area by main buffet, in all fairness it has been raining a lot so I suppose they require a lot of sitting area by the main buffet but the tables are now so close to one another that it is almost impossible to walk to your table with your meal. Pros: Good looking lobby, food, chefs and cooks go out of their way to please the customers, one of the nicest buffet I have seen in North America, beach, plenty of beach chairs, red wine (legitimo) is excellent for a resort, Wi-Fi signal in the lobby is quite strong.

Family Friendly resort, not the best for nightlife

It was my first time in the Caribbean and at an all-inclusive resort. The staff were friendly (maybe even a little too friendly).. Food: MonteCristo is the buffet open every day for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Lots of choices and great service! There is another restaurant Taino near the pool also open for lunch (you can go in your bathing suit). At night Taino becomes a steakhouse (not the best service/food). There is also an Italian restaurant, Asian fusion, and other fusion restaurants. Krystal was my favorite (get the beef cannelloni!!). There are set menus and you select each course. I went in January and we did not have to make reservations for the restaurants. Room service had about 7 items and was 24 hr. There was another place to eat on Caribbean street that I did not see on the map, next to the water sports building. Drinks: There is a lobby bar, sports bar (24 hr), pool bar, bar at the stages, coffee shop. The sports bar is the only bar open late- others close earlier (11 or 12?). It is air-conditioned (needed a sweater), the snacks are terrible, and you have to pay to play pool or arcade games- bring $USD. Entertainment: There are daily activities you can participate in which are fun. Every night they have different bands for live music starting at 8:30PM (after a kids show). Then there is a show from 9:45-10:30. The circus was amazing!! Other shows are good too. There is more music after the show. When this is over and the bar closes there is not much to do other than go to the disco which is outside of the resort. Entry is free most nights (except one night there was a cover for a strip show). Drinks are NOT INCLUDED. There are excursion stands in the lobby if you want to do any additional activities. There is also a casino at the resort next door (I did not go so I cannot comment). I think there is a water park too but it was cold and rainy so I did not go. Caribbean street has shopping but make sure you have cash or you can get pesos at the ATM on the street. Room: Nice enough. Beds are not very comfortable. Sheets and towels not always the cleanest, but they mop the floors daily which is good. We had some ants but no big bugs. There is a jacuzzi tub in the open. There is a minifridge with beer and soft drinks, also alcohol on tap. Remember do not drink the tap water, use bottled. Beach/Pool- awesome. I loved the pool bar, and there were chairs on the beach and at the pool to go and relax. There was music at the pool but not really at the beach. There are some games/activities at the beach and water aerobics, ping pong, vball at the pool but you can play volleyball or mini soccer at the beach. Drink service also. Unfortunately it was rainy and windy the week I was there so all water sports were cancelled but they offer 5 for free included with the all-inclusive package. Would have been even better if the weather were nice but overall a trip is what you make of it. Made a lot of international friends at the bars, mostly families on vacation.

Went with a party of 18 to celebrate my 50th birthday. Resort is Excellent, staff very friendly and outgoing. My wife planned a surprise birthday celebration while we were down there. It was awesome! Also, the nightly shows put on by the staff are outstanding. the grounds are extremely clean and excellently maintained, the pool and the beach areas are all very close within walking distance to the hotel. Would definitely go back!

Seriously...bad

This was my first trip to the DR. I've traveled to all inclusive resorts in Cancun and Riviera Maya prior to this, and I figured this trip would be somewhat similar- however it wasn't. I will say that the DR has some of the most beautiful beaches and water I have ever seen! But beyond that, this country's tourism industry needs some major work- tips are exepected for everything- and everything is extra. And don't even get me started on the starfish ploy used on one of the day excursions. Bring 200$ in singles at least if you would like your room cleaned and to be served properly! As I mentioned, I've been to Mexico where tips are appreciated; in the DR if you don't tip you are treated just plain bad. After all the nickel and diming all week during our stay, we were upset to hear our return flight was delayed and we wouldn't be picked up from the hotel until 3:00 instead of the 11:30 time we originally had set. We stayed in our room until housekeeping came as at 1:00 and left to wait in the lobby. While walking through the lobby, a woman at the front desk screamed at us from about 30 feet away, "Checkout?- come." We walked over and before I even arrived at the desk she informed me I was late and needed to pay $30. I was incensed that they were still trying to get more money from me at this place!! I told her no, so she countered with, "OK, 15 dollars." I was shocked! I once again said no and told her to take it up with my travel agent. I started walking away and she aggressively told me I couldn't leave the hotel without giving her money. I sat down and actually had to access the American embassy to see what my rights were. I actually felt threatened there- a truly unbelievable end to a vacation! Once again- beautiful beaches and water!!! But that was my first and last DR trip.

This hotel is part of a series of four that RIU's that run along the beach, and is arguably the nicest of the four. The grounds are immaculate, the staff are nice, the pools are nice. It is definitely worth springing for the VIP option, if you can. The food is kind of a letdown though. Compared to RIU's at other destinations, it was rather bland, and while there seemed to be a lot of it, lacked variety. The alcohol selection is also not the greatest. Getting an ocean front, first floor suite is nice, but unfortunately you can't open the ocean front door from the outside, which is a let down. The hotel visitors are almost all either families, or honeymooners. If you're single, staying there will be somewhat awkward. Will return to RIU properties in the future, just probably not this one.
