Beautiful Property

The facilities were beautiful. Everything was very clean from the rooms to the restaurants. The staff work very hard to ensure you have a wonderful vacation. The rooms are spacious and the AC works perfectly. You will need it since the heat and humidity is miserable. I loved the entertainment every night. The entertainment staff go out of their was to ensure you have a good time. My only reason for a score of 3 is the language barrier. I found most employees spoke little to no English at this facility. It made it hard to get crucial information about food ingedients, activities and amenities. I wish I had known about Google's translator app before I went. It would have been very useful. We had the best meals at the Monte Cristo Buffett with Elizabeth and Belkins taking care of us. They were so sweet and fun. Be sure to tip all your servers, they work very hard for you!

Pros and cons for you to judge

About us, family of four, parents in their early 30s, kids a are 4 and 1yo. Travel south once every two year, usually Mexico, first time in DR. Pros: 1.food is great, wide selection for any taste. There are two buffets, one for breakfast and dinner, another for lunch right next to the main pool which is very continent. Beer is “Coors light” and local “National” I believe also decent. Hard liquors are mostly imported but not top shelf: Jim Beam, Dewar’s, Smirnoff, Jack Daniels. Rum and Gin are local. 2.Entertainers in the pool, some kids programs, live performers every night. 3. Main pool is has many chaise loungers and plenty of shade or sun, whichever you prefer. Multiple servers cater drinks with short wait time, although they will stare at you for a minute or two after serving you(awaiting for gratitude) 4. Beach is cleaned everyday, truck loads of debris are being towed away before 9am. Some seaweed accumulation by the end of the day but nothing major. Although the sea was somewhat rough for the little ones, so we didn’t get to swim in it a lot. 5. The vegetation, lawns and palms on the property are plenty and are very well maintained. There are so many palms on the beach that there are no need for artificial shade to keep you cool on the hot day. It’s very pleasant to take stroll through that palm forest along the shore. 6. The overall room condition is at 5 on the scale of 10. Plenty of signs of wear and tear. Rust and elements build up on metallic parts in the room. The walls on the property itself and inside of the rooms have seen better days too. 7. The Splash Park is great. Literally 3 minutes away once you step out from the hotel property. No one under 1.2 meters tall can ride big slides. The littles ones have their own slides and a pool. No jewelry, watches, GoPro can be worn or held while on big slides. 8. The Caribbean street which is a strip of independent shops, gift stores, pharmacy, doctor is adjacent to the north side of the hotel. The prices are reasonable and you can negotiate them down in some stores. Cons: 1. No hot water last day we stayed, I was reading updates on the Facebook the hot water was out for at least 3 full days. 2. One of the days electricity was flickering and at some point went out for about an hour. 3. We asked for a quite room, so they put us away from pool area, which is what we wanted. But apparently the elevator in that section wasn’t working even before we came there. And it wasn’t operating the whole 7 nights that we stayed there. So we logged some serous milage since the other elevator was in the other side of the hotels. We had a stroller for the little one, so the stairs were not an option. 4. Kids pool in the hotel is very poor in features , not maintained, a lot of mineral deposits on the sides, not a pleasant place to be at. 5. No mosquito control in place, haven’t seen anybody fogging or spraying the pests. The result my daughter and my wife were all covered in the bites. 6. Stay away from the gift shop on premises. The “divera” I believe is the name. The employees are rude, they have a POS system in place, but they do not use it. When I have asked for a receipt I was refused to be provided with one, and was told that if I don’t like the fact I don’t have to buy anything. The result is every time you go in there you pay a different price, most likely employees are pocketing the money. Went to lobby to complaint. Apparently it is individually owned by a third party and have nothing to do with a hotel. Never in my life I had to pay $10 for a small candy that’s couldn’t cost more then $1 US. I do understand that the prices are inflated in vacation destinations and hotels, but they can’t be x10 more then their retail value. THE VERDICT: it is for you to decide, but I will stay away from this particular hotel, it does not deserve 5 stars.

Loved the convince of the beach , pool, and food close enough to get to without a cart or shuttle. Loved the steak and lobster restaurant as well as the presentation and food in the buffet. The help was wonderful, the rooms clean, fresh and comfortable. The specialty coffee shop as well as the martini bar was a bonus. I have been to many all inclusives and I will definitely be back.

Very poor service throughout.

We were looking forward to going to this hotel for some time but I wish we hadn't bothered. It is the worst service that we have encountered in any of the Riu hotels that we have been to, and that is most of the Riu hotels in the Dominican republic, Jamaica and Costa Rica. It is all promises and no action, from the problems with our room which we eventually asked to change hotels because no one was turning up to fix them even after several complaints directly to the front desk. We were VIP guests and so were able to go to the VIP pools, but service there was non existent, I asked for cocktails which I can get in any of the other Riu hotels only to be told that they did not do them, just because they took longer to make. Instead they just wanted to play on their phones all day, When we stayed at the pool all day, the dirty glasses just piled up and were never removed all day long. Food in the buffet restaurant was a free for all, with everyone getting in each others way, no organisation, and the serving staff just walked in front of the guests, no manners whatsoever. We have been going to Riu hotels twice a year since 2008 and for some reason the staff at just this hotel can't speak English, even though it's their second language and they are taught it from an early age. Perhaps Riu only employ illiterates at this hotel. We will never return to this hotel, Unfortunately Riu seem to be changing their hotel style to cater for the young when they refurbish them, so the conventional style is gradually being phased out.

Food is poor

This is a delayed review but I doubt anything will have changed in the last few months. The room was clean and nice. No complaints there. Reception were helpful. The grounds were spotless. We wouldn’t return to this hotel and this is due to the food. We learned that if you want to go to the buffet you must get there as it opens otherwise everything is cold. There is a lot of choice... if the foot is hot. The Italian restaurant was laughable. It’s worth going in to watch people’s reactions to the food. The mushroom lasagne was revolting. We watched everyone leave with full plates left on tables. Two other restaurants have the exact same menu and are side by side. I’m not sure how they can pass these off as two separate restaurants. The grill near the pool was really good at lunchtime. Not as busy as the buffet and the food seemed hotter. We didn’t go to the steakhouse restaurant in the evening to comment. The fine dining restaurant did a nice soup and seafood risotto and the food was hot. We visited this restaurant three times during our stay. Service around the pool is good when you tip and the beach was lovely. The entertainment on an evening was dreadful. The same girls in thongs wearing different outfits and dancing, whilst pervy men video it. Not for us. The Michael Jackson tribute was quite good. There was nowhere else really to go on an evening. The indoor bar has zero atmosphere and is seriously lacking some music and ambience. The sports bar was grim and the bar area/ glasses smelt horrific. We found ourselves going back to the room and drinking on the balcony with some music. We also watched a member of staff in the buffet restaurant appear to steal someone’s mobile phone they had left on the table. We were going to report this but did not want to get involved. It was done very slyly and the waitress moved all the tables around for no reason in order to disorientate whoever had left the phone. She then put it into the pocket of her apron and continued working. We were unsure whether to go to reception and ask if a phone was handed in later that evening but felt we would look bad for accusing someone of theft with no evidence. The staff there work endlessly but it is abundantly clear they are praying for the tips. We tipped one guy a large amount on the last night (mainly due to us having a lot of money left over and he had looked after us) and he was so grateful. They do work really hard. Overall we would not return to Dominican Republic and it doesn’t have a patch on Mexico. This hotel was in need of improvement with food and entertainment but we couldn’t fault the room/ cleanliness. We stayed here with it being a Riu but we were disappointed.
