Good time but not great

Booked travel through Apple Vacations. Wanted a 6 golden apple resort with a great beach and top shelf drinks. We were told that this resort was one of the best. So we booked a junior suite garden view 5 night package with King bed to celebrate our anniversary. We booked in Nov for a Feb stay. Over the months before the trip we started to read reviews on this property some of the common themes were mold, hard beds, poor alcohol selection. We started to read reviews that were Excellent followed by reviews that were Terrible. We said how could people have 180 degree opposite experiences during same time frame. They must just like to complain. We arrived to find our room with two double beds pushed together to make a king. Not a deal breaker but thought we would see about getting another room with a King bed. They moved us to another room but instead of a garden view we were overlooking a noisy street full of vendors. We went back to the desk to complain and they said we will put you in a very nice room and they had a bellman take our stuff there while we went to dinner. We got back to the room and we found mold all over the ceiling shower, mold in the ice bucket (No ice machines worked in the entire building, toilet in room wouldn't flush. By this time it was very late and decided to see our apple rep in the morning. Apple rep took us to see the manager and they said if we slept there one more night they would get us an ocean view for our final three nights. Well the 4th room was the charm. I started to think about all the reviews I read about mold. As soon as you got off the elevator you could smell mold. As you are walking around the outside gardens you can see mold on side of the patios. We love Margaritas and the only tequila in the resort was Jose Cuervo. (Far from Top Shelf) Tried three different Margaritas at three different bars and they were the worse Margaritas I ever tasted in my life, 1 sip and they were thrown away. Resort only has 1 beer (Presidente) Not good! So I was forced to drink sweet drinks or skunky beer. To be fair not everything was bad. The beach was beautiful. You can walk on it for miles, the food was pretty good, better than resorts in Mexico, the staff was friendly and always smiling and singing. There are 3 other Riu hotels in walking distance and The Palace is by far head and shoulders above them. So I guess my recommendation is to read different reviews for resorts in the area and choose a place where you don't see things repeatedly talked about that turn you off (Mold, Poor alcohol selection, hard beds). Doubt we will stay with Riu hotels unless they are brand new.

Decent resort, not great

We are in our mid fifties, and have travelled many times to Mexico, Dominican Republic and Cuba. So...we have experienced a variety of locations and resorts. First off, we did our research and knew that the Rui Palace Bavaro is a big resort. We also knew if we wanted the quieter section, it would require a costly upgrade, which we decided not to make. The main area ( not VIP section) has one pool, which is loud and activity driven. There is a swim up bar area which was full of overly served adults but what was really unsettling is that there are many kids running around and watching the drinking contests etc. That just grossed me out, truthfully. The animation team hounds you to participate in everything, no respect for anyone quietly reading or relaxing. It got very tiresome. The beach is beautiful, but was very windy, so difficult to enjoy it the week we were there. The buffet was terrific. We found the wait staff to be very pleasant and friendly. Unlike other reviewers, I thought they were wonderful. No complaints at all. We tried the Steak House and Krystal, but thought the buffet was more than adequate. The room was dated and needed some TLC but it was kept clean. I appreciated that the outdoor patio chairs were clean, too. There was lots of hot water. The bed was really comfortable. Pillows need some upgrading! The lobby bar staff were terrific, as were the women at the ice cream parlour. The front desk personnel were very courteous to us - no issues with them at all. The grounds were well kept. It’s easy to navigate the resort. The entertainment was mediocre. It’s not important to us. The top shelf liquor is available to those who upgrade to VIP, and that sort of cheapness aggravates me. We have always visited resorts where the only upgrade available is room selection. It seems ridiculous to offer one set of guests low tier liquor while those who who pay more get better quality. I understand paying more for a better room location, but the drinks? Not classy. We tip everywhere..pool area, room attendant, buffet staff...even the two women cleaning the pool area bathroom. Those women deserve to be tipped, too. We’re very polite and gracious. I felt we were treated similarly by the staff. The reason we will not return, and why I feel this resort is just average, is due to the noisy pool, irritating animation team ( forgot to mention the incessant cajoling for participants over the PA system) and the tired rooms.

Amazing Staff...Beautiful Property

My daughter Maddi and I had the privilege of spending a week with the most amazing staff at this beautiful resort! First and foremost a HUGE thank you to the staff, particularly Black Diamond! His kindness, humor and sweet demeanor made us feel very welcome and we looked forward to seeing him everyday! Also thanks to Gorila, Mr. Norman, Mr. Panda, Cappuccino and the ladies for so much fun with the activities we participated in. All of these people really made our stay memorable and we were sad to leave. They all work very hard! Our room was immaculate everyday, the dining and wait staff were outstanding and the food was amazing. We travel often and have choices but this Resort will most definitely be our main destination for years to come!! We will be visiting again soon and I highly recommend this resort!!!

Top hotel, RUINED TOTALLY BY STAFF ATTITUDE!!!

Without exception the staff at this hotel, (apart from Ramon at the front desk, and Chrismond at the adult pool bar who are both very friendly and helpful) Are the worst we have ever experienced. Firstly at check in, we presented our credit card which a man took and put in a card machine, presented it to me and told me to put my PIN number in it. There was no amount showing and he said it was for hotel security!!! I explained that I had paid for my holiday in advance, it was all inclusive, and they did not need my credit card details as they already had them and why was I presented with a card machine showing no amount and being asked for my PIN number? This guy, I never got his name, then lost it big time and at this point Ramon intervened and sorted the whole situation out. Note to RIU, at front desk at least provide your paperwork with English translations or staff who can speak English who do not have attitude. If Ramon had been on lunch, which he was 15 mins later, this situation could have been worse. other staff Where do you start, RUDE, IGNORANT, NEVER SMILE (unless you are tipping!!!) Very very bad for a customer service industry. The worst cases being the female waitresses in the restaurant, they never say hello, speak, smile, it really needs to be experienced to see how bad it is. We had 2 occasions, one, a waitress first spoke to us when we were leaving asking if we did not like the service as we had left no tip!!! I tried to explain that we tip for good service or at least polite service, not when we are basically blanked and have no eye contact even when serving our food. Secondly after an equally bad service we were asked by the same waitress at breakfast the next day if we were leaving a tip as we had not left one for her last night!!! You couldn’t make it up! We normally stay in Secrets or Excellence resorts where everyone is so friendly, and maybe this is because the staff are trained to as it is a timeshare holiday club type of place, but it is so much better. This is all such a shame as the location is fabulous here, the food is top top notch and the entertainment at night is first class. Yet a simple thing like staff attitude let’s it down badly. As I said the only two exceptions were Ramon at the front desk who was charming and helpful and Christmond at the adult pool bar, so friendly and always smiling. You are both a credit. Such a shame that the rest of the staff aren’t the same.

HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE

Let's see...I can't even rate Hotel Riu Palace Bavaro because I haven't seen it yet. Yes. That is true. After 10 hours of traveling, we arrive at our hotel (husband, myself and our two children 5 and 3 years old) and are told that the hotel over booked and there are no rooms. The man said "I am so sorry, but at this point there is nothing we can do so we will just have to move on." So yes. I get to see the beautiful Riu Palace Bavaro only to be told that we have to be uprooted for tonight and then can go back to the Riu Palace Bavaro tomorrow. So...here we are. We had to uproot our hungry, fatigued children into a cab to go to another very musty, Riu down the street for the night. As we get inThto our room 139 the maid is still cleaning it and setting up a sofa bed, yes a sofa bed for our two children (we are supposed to have two queen beds at Riu Bavaro). Then, I ask where we can eat and the front desk told me "room service" as nothing else is available. So of course our room does not have a menu. When I call room service I was laughed at when I said "I'd like to place a room service order." I was told "are you serious? Really"? The man kept laughing. Then I tried to tell him that we just got in and didn't eat. After much of him laughing at me I told him "forget it." Then I went back to the front desk to ask for a manager. At this time, the front desk told me there was no manager and that I shouldn't be upset just because my room doesn't have a menu. They are missing the entire point! This is THE WORST customer service I have ever have. We have traveled much of the world and stayed in hostels and 5 star resorts. The staff at the hostels treated us so much better than we are being treated here. I have never, ever felt the need to write a negative review about a hotel as we spend much time traveling, camping and can adapt to many situations. However, I do not want anybody else to have to ruin their vacation and go through what we are going through tonight. As far as the update on our room at Bavaro, the staff told me to "check back at noon." I have zero faith in the staff and fully expect for them to come up with another excuse. I fear that we will be stuck at this Riu down the street for the rest of our trip. I feel completely trapped and helpless on this vacation, not to mention HUNGRY. Don't do it. Find another resort in Punta Cana. Don't risk going through what we are going through tonight.
