Brilliant Holiday

We've just returned from Punta Cana and had a great time! Staff are so lovely and the rooms are amazing (especially our free room upgrade) The pool staff were brilliant and the guys at the evening entertainment were too!! We preferred the beach to the pool as there was more of a breeze and was more relaxing.. We don't like to moan but there were just a few minor issues what could be improved: Smoking in the pool- For two non-smokers I think the hotel promoting smoking in swimming pools is a little unhygienic e.g putting ash trays on the swim up tables etc. It's just encouraging people to do it and It's not fair for those who don't smoke. Food- We spoke to a lot of Brits and we all seemed to be having the same issue with upset stomachs after the first 2-3days and then for the duration of the holiday. We reported this to our TUI rep so hopefully it will be resolved but just be mindful of the foods your eating. Other than that we had a brilliant time and would definitely return , the beaches are just to die for!!

Have just returned from the Riu Palace Bavaro (11th - 25th June). Upon arrival we were told at reception that we had been upgraded to VIP, we were given room 4013. The rooms are no different to the standard rooms you are just in a block instead of in the hotel and you get access to both the VIP pools. Room Room was very pleasant, had no problems, everything was working. Cleaned daily by a very sweet cleaner and also turn down service which I thought was a lovely touch. Was given clean towels everyday, sometimes even twice a day. We had a blanket in the wardrobe at the top (have seen a lot of people complain that there wasn't any). Lovely big spacious balcony, never really used it though. Bed was comfortable and absolutely massive. Pool We spent most of our time at the VIP pool with the swim up bar - you have the choice of sun bed loungers or cabana beds which was nice. Staff at the swim up bar was always very friendly and seemed to love their job. Drinks were ok, if you want branded alcohol you will specifically need to ask. It was never a problem. Drinks were always made very strong so I always asked for just a little bit of alcohol. Beach UNREAL! The Palace Bavaro definitely has the best beach. Less seaweed than the others and just beautiful. We walked up and down the beach every day and was so pleased that we picked this hotel. The water was clear blue and the sand was so soft. Restaurants Buffett was great always a large choice of selection. Did get quite bored of the breakfast after two weeks as there isn't the English fry up option. They have bacon and sausages but it just wasn't the same as back home. The a la carte restaurants were very nice. We ate at these most nights, and so good you don't have to book, can just walk in between the hours of 6.30pm and 9pm and you get seated. If the restaurant is busy they give you a buzzer to take to the pool and lets you know when your table is ready. Our favourite was the Italian and the Steakhouse. Would advice you not to try the Japanese, they could probably change their menu. Entertainment This is where we struggled - the animation team are absolutely fantastic. They try so hard to get everybody involved and never stop dancing or smiling. They host shows every night but they do not start until 9.40pm. They kind of need some upbeat music or a dj between the kids club and the show, as they tend to have an old guy come in with a violin and play 'depressing music'. Overall, myself and partner loved this holiday. We had a brilliant time and met some incredible people. This hotel will always be special to us (he proposed on my birthday - a romantic beach dinner with just the two of us) which was absolutely amazing. I would 100% recommend this hotel to any couple and to a family with children. Oh and WIFI worked brilliant the whole 2 weeks of my stay. The only place it didn't work was on the beach but that's obvious.

Loved it

We recently returned from a trip and had an excellent time. Extremely friendly people and willing to help. When we arrived, our toilet was broken and would not flush and the light was out in the bathroom. I went to the front desk because the phone was also not working but they fixed everything very quickly. Also, the Animation entertainment team did an outstanding job of keeping both adults and kids involved- if you wanted to play along. We will be returning hopefully next summer!

This was a trip for my sister's bachelorette party. We had a great time together, and my sister enjoyed her time most importantly. The beach was beautiful. Most of the staff (not any of the management) was friendly and helpful. The food that was cooked in front of you (on the grill/skillet) was delicious. However, all of management was flippantly disrespectful and unhelpful. One staff member barged in on me while I was sleeping. Another staff member refused to give you towels when you presented towel cards. At one point we were given 2 towels per card. The next time we were only given 1 and with an attitude. Our rooms were lackluster and there were bugs everywhere. On our arrival the man at the front who put us in rooms pretty much scammed us. He made it seem like he was giving us an upgrade to VIP rooms for free (mind you we didn't even think of/inquire about the VIP rooms). The safes, refridgerators, and keys did not work. We didn't have blankets. Though staff thoroughly cleaned the rooms, we still had bugs everywhere. It seemed pretty clear that the man just wanted to occupy these rooms, and the rooms we were set to have were all taken up. I became sick w/diarrhea and vomiting the second night I was there. Most of the girls I travelled with had GI symptoms, as well. This kept us from doing more activities we had planned. On our departure, we tried calling a gentleman who had brought us to the resort in the beginning. The lady at the front desk refused to call him, and instead called someone else who charged a higher price. She would explain to us why she did that. Also, there is the the policy, that if you are a guest at a RIU resort, you should be able to go to the other RIU resorts. Our friend staying at another RIU resort was told to leave by the manager. We presented him with the policy, and he said that management was different that day. Well, I agree. Management is different in RIU Palace Bavaro. Different in the sense that it is POOR.

OK...Here we go. We probably stayed 1 day too long at this resort. We brought the kids, and if you do the same, I would recommend a 4 night max trip. Nevertheless, here's my review... First on Punta Cana itself. I've been to Cancun, and the hustling at that airport is pretty damn pathetic. I didn't think any airport could top that. Until we arrived in Punta Cana. Our family is snaking around the line through customs, and one of the officials unhooked the partition to let us through another line that was shorter and faster. It appeared to be a line where families, elderly, and perhaps people with mobility issues could go through. So where sitting in the line, and the official walks past me and whispers..."that'll be $10 my friend." WAIT A DAMN minute. We were perfectly damn fine where we were. I ended up paying the $10 because I was afraid that he would send us back to the end of the line. Not even 5 minutes later, we're walking through our last security check point, and we run into the bag porters. They asked us what shuttle service we were looking for, and we told them "Sun Country Vacations." One gentlemen immediately grabbed my wife's bag and started to push. We have the 360 degree rolling bags, so pushing them are pretty easy. I told him that we were able to push our on bags and didn't need any help. Just point us in the right direction. Before, he was speaking perfect damn English...now all of a sudden we looked like aliens. Needless to say, that set the tone for the entire trip. At that point, I couldn't trust anyone's generosity. I didn't know if it was genuine or not. Not an indictment on Riu Bavaro...but something to look out for. Don't accept any favors unless you feel like paying for it. Especially in the security lines or at the airport. Same thing with the baggage handlers on the return home. Now onto Riu Palace Bavaro: Average...Food was okay but after 5 days and 6 nights, my wife and I both started having digestive issues. The Italian restaurant was the best. You don't need reservations, just get there early. There are 2 specialty restaurants with different names but they have the exact same menu. I believe it's the Krystal and the other one that starts with a "K." The guy making the omelettes for breakfast was the best. Ask for fresh cracked eggs. not the egg mix. He's worth tipping. Average...The drinks were average as well. Depending on where you go. All of the pool side drinks were watered down. Yalkydas at the lobby bar made the best drinks. Loaded with alcohol. The sports bar bartender made good drinks too. Average...The rooms look like every other Riu room. If you've stayed at a Riu before, you'll know what I'm talking about. Beds are hard as hell though. I didn't have any of the AC or Safe issues that other reviewers are writing about. BUT the Fridge, TV, and Phone didn't work. They have beautiful HD TVs, but what's the use if everything is snowy. The Phone didn't work. We wanted to order room service so I went to front desk to tell them about the phone. While telling the front desk, the lady pulled out a pad and asked us what we wanted to order, and that the phones didn't work. So "ROOM" service is not "ROOM" service. It's get out of your room, walk to the front desk and have someone bring you your food service. RECOMMENDATION FOR THE RIU STAFF...PLEASE REMOVE "ROOM SERVICE" FROM THE DESCRIPTION Below Average...Definitely the pool. It's pretty big, but when I go to the pool, I like to cool off. As soon as we stepped in, it felt like a hot tub. This gives me a sense that it's nasty things making it warm. I've been to the pool in 100 degree weather before and most of the time the pool is ice cold until I get used to it. That's what I was expecting and with 80 percent of our trip being spent at the pool, this made for a bad experience. Above Average...The grounds were very well maintained. They are constantly cleaning. One thing to note: This is an open air resort, so when it rains everything gets wet. The floors are tiled and they get very slick. So be careful getting around because it's likely that it'll rain during your stay. If you have your balcony door open, the humidity will make your room floors slick also. My son slipped and hit his head (he's okay but was shook up). BONUS REVIEW: The waterpark. It's free for guests of Riu Bavaro. Pretty nice break in the trip. It's all water slides though. There is no pool here, so don't expect to hang out or just chill. There are lounge chairs for those that like to sun bathe. But if you want an different pool to just chill in, don't come here. Hope this helps someone.
