This was my second trip to this resort, first time for my 15 year old son. When they say check in is at 3 they mean it, so pack a swimsuit and a wrap in your carry on bag. Stow your suitcase behind registration, grab a coffee or adult beverage on the way to change at the pool. Have lunch in Montecristo or Taino near the pool. Grab another drink and head to the beautiful beach and crystal clear water! Our room was not ready, so we had an upgrade to the adults only area. Only used that pool once, but enjoyed the (child free) quietness of the area. If you are in the upgraded adults only, a word of caution, our building room was adjacent to the nightlife area and it was rather loud at night, but I can sleep through anything after a long day at the beach. So keep that in mind when booking. The upgraded area had premium liquor, but the rooms are basically the same throughout the complex. Since my son is 15 he eats about every two hours. We would have dinner early at the restaurants and then he would hit the buffet at Montecristo later in the evening. Montecristo menus change every day for a huge variety of tasty food. Both of us enjoyed a wide variety of food from around the world. They had a delicious roasted piglet that was heavenly, donuts to die for and delectable fresh fruit with Dominican honey. My only complaint is that they need to hire someone to make their sushi rice. The resort has someone patrolling the beach area and there are a few vendors hawking different things, but they are all respectful and really don't bother you as soon as you indicate you are not interested. All staff in the restaurants are excellent, every single person is hard working and friendly. The nighttime entertainment is varied and interesting. The kids club workers must spend the day coaching the kids for cute little song/dance routines on the stage in the early evening (did I mention they were hard working staff??) Every morning, groundskeepers and the cleaning crew are out and about making sure the whole complex is cleaned by midmorning.

Casino paid for my trip

Hotel great clean and good service . entertainment and food good. 3 times in the casino , twice with the wife. Played a high risk 8 ball game. lost 1800 1st night and won 7200 second night. Won a few hundred on BJ and lost a few hundred on Roulette. wife even on the slots . service good and friendly in casino. This time the casino paid for my vacation . Doesn't work like that every time . haha

Do NOT GO HERE!! I have traveled all over the world and NEVER have been to such a HORRIFIC Resort!

I have traveled all over the world and this was my 2nd time in Punta Cana. This was by far the WORSE vacation of my life. A brief outline: 1. SERVICE - HORRIBLE - they move like snails, have no desire to help you or serve you not to mention there is a THEFT PROBLEM THIS HOTEL HAS!! (will go into more detail below) 2. BUFFET FOOD - HORRIBLE - only 1 edible restaurant was the steak house; however only after the manager told that restaurant supervisor to take good care of us (after numerous complaints). 3. ROOMS - ROACHES!!!! BEWARE!!!! Ok, now more in detail.... 1. Our agent booked us 2 ocean front rooms - when we checked in they told me that only my husband and I could be in the ocean front and that my 19 year old and my 4 year old will have to be in a building in back due to the ocean front being adults only...so we were forced to split up our family on two ends of the hotel and the downgraded my kids room. Best part is while living in the adults only room, I saw kids in and out of that area. I understand making a pool adults only, but rooms which are on the beach should not be. 2. POOL - went to the pool in the morning - keep in mind that the drink service / waiters don't exist during lunch time. From what I observed most of them went to help at the buffet - so don't expect to get a drink around lunchtime by the pool. After leaving the pool in the middle of the day to go to the beach I wanted to change out my wet towels for fresh ones - the guy told me I had to wait 30 minutes. When I looked at him like hes crazy and told him to call the front desk and get some he pulled out 4 towels and gave them to me!! I could not believe it. 3. Room service - HAHA doesn't exist. They have about 4 food items you can pick from and 2 desserts. The 1st day we put up the sign on our door to have breakfast served to our room... well ya - that didn't happen. In the morning I woke up and looked outside of the room, thinking I overslept them knocking - NOPE - all I found was the sign still hanging on our door. Another situation- my husband called one morning at 10am to have the mini fridge refilled. We came back at 3pm - still not refilled. We came back at 6 - still not refilled. My husband called again and they said they would send someone now. NO ONE - he called 10 minutes later and they again told him that someone would be there in 10 minutes. We were going to dinner so we left, thinking for sure it would be refilled when we get back. NOPE!!! I finally called room service and the guy 1st interrupted me that he will send someone before I finished my sentence, then after me going on about how many times we called earlier, he asks me "IF IM DONE." My head almost blew off - HORRIFIC SERVICE!!!! 4. LASTLY, BUT MOST IMPORTANT - having a beachfront room - in the morning we would go out on the balcony when we woke up, then go shower. Well one of the days I left a little tiny handbag on our table on the balcony along with my husbands cell phone. MONEY from my bag and his PHONE were GONE when I came back 30 minutes later after showering. When sitting out there we noticed a worker raking the sand around palm trees around all the rooms, then when we got back and saw what was missing there were footprints in the sand pointing too and from our balcony. The best part - I called management, took pictures of the footprints and told them to get their employees that have been working that morning and compare their shoes. THEY REFUSED. One of the supervisors we talked to for over an hour. He told us basically they cannot do anything. That RIU corporate refuses to put up cameras in that area and that this is NOT THE 1ST OR 2ND time this has happened. SO OBVIOUSLY THEY HAVE A THEFT ISSUE WITHIN THEIR EMPLOYEES!!! LONG STORY SHORT- DO NOT GO HERE!! THEFT - HORRIBLE SERVICE - ROACHES - BAD FOOD

A good try but needs work

Our flight was delayed due to weather and we arrived one day late to the Riu Bavaro. Our travel agent had called the hotel to make them aware of what had happened and that we would arrive one day later. The transportation from airport to hotel was hosted by Funjet vacations and there was confusion when we arrived at their desk. They couldn't find our name because (I'm assuming) of our flight delay. After about 10 minutes of confusion we were finally on our way to the hotel. The driver was a nice but drove extremely fast and reckless. Not the most relaxing drive and they don't speak english. Once at our destination we were not greeted with a drink or any refreshments. Here's the kicker - when we gave them our name they said that they weren't expecting us and that we were scheduled for the day that our vacation actually ended. When we explained to the manager what had happened with our flight, he asked if we contacted the hotel. I told him that our travel agent had done so yesterday and that it should have been all set. He said that he didn't have a room ready for us, but if we came back to the front desk at 3:00 he would have something ready. All that is great but we arrived at the hotel at 11:30, so most of our time was wasted waiting for a room that they should have already reserved for us, after all isn't that the purpose of a reservation?. We were never offered an upgrade for our inconvenience .... This is a first in the hotel business. We finally got up to our room and we were suppose to have the garden view but instead they gave us the back alley view at the far end of the hotel. The back alley for those of you who don't know is a small road on the side of the hotel where there are a few shops and i'm assuming where some of the staff hang out at night. You wouldn't believe how noisy it is at night on the weekends. Not my idea of a peaceful relaxing vacation. They would stay in that back alley until at least 3AM, being loud and in my opinion, disruptive and inconsiderate to the hotel guests who are trying to sleep. A tightly run hotel would never stand for this. So as you can tell the vacation wasn't off to a great start. The staff for the most part were great, however a few bad apples in the bunch ruins it for the rest. For example there was one towel person who just had a bad attitude and it almost seemed like he was doing me a favor by doing his job and giving me a towel. No smile or hello, just negative energy. Then the next day there was someone different who was nice. One of the bar tenders in the back of the adult pool - same issue, like he's doing me a favor to make a drink. If your a female and speak the language, you'll have better odds at getting better service. (Just telling it like I saw it) The beach was perfect, but there was always someone trying to sell you something. The para-sailing people always trying to get the guests to buy some water sport package. Hotel guests are trying to relax, we don't want to be bothered every day. There are also people selling cigars and other goods on the beech. They kind of weave in and out and around where you are lying down trying to sun bathe. This ruins my experience as it's supposed to be a closed off resort. Most guests don't want to deal with this on vacation. I feel the hotel should have better control over the beech vendors. The hotel pool was very nice, long and looked like a lazy river. Overall everything was clean. Evening entertainment was weak, not much going on that we could relate to. Hotel rooms were nice, clean with a few quirks. The layout was different as there is no privacy from she shower and open bath to the bed. Both of our sinks didn't drain well and our minibar refrige was broken. It looks like they were trying to go high-end but didn't put any attention into the details, i.e. full maintenance checks making sure things actually worked in the room. Finally we all got sick to some degree, I"m assuming it was food poisoning. Belly cramps, diarrhea and nausea. I'm not sure if the bottled water in the rooms had an issue with them but I had drank about a 1/4 bottle before bed and one evening and I woke up at 12 AM with nausea and stomach symptoms. This was not the best vacation and sorry to say we won't be back. From a management perspective the hotel should really look at these reviews. I have a business myself and hate to give a bad review but this is one of those circumstances where I feel someone should know and guests should be made aware of.

Excellent Time at the RIU Palace Bavaro!

We had a very nice vacation at the RIU Palace Bavaro! Stayed here with my wife and son for the week of March 8-15. In summary, this is not a ultra all-inclusive resort, but a nice newer upper-mid level all-inclusive with a nice layout and one of the beast beaches in Punta Cana. The food and drinks are all good or better, and service and entertainment/animation were great. I have been to quite a few other all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana and Mexico with this being my 4th trip to a RIU property, so I have a decent vantage point for comparison. Hotel and Check-in: Arrived at 3PM, we were given a welcome drink, check-in took 5 minutes and was completely trouble-free. Probably the quickest check-in I ever had at a resort. The room was ready to go right away and we were given a unprompted complimentary upgrade to a Junior Suite Superior which meant that the room faces the quiet cabana garden/beach instead of the back of the property. All rooms that allow children are in the main building. The smaller buildings are for the adult-only "VIP" section, however the rooms are the same as the main buidling. The hotel itself is medium sized, four stories high, and is situated right along the beach with it taking just a couple of minutes to walk to the beach from any room. The grounds were immaculate with many palm trees, flowers, etc. Contrary to older reviews, we had great WiFi throughout the resort, including our room. The only spot with weak signal was right on the beach. Room: Our room was on the 3rd floor. Nice modern decor with purple accents throughout. The bathroom is open - no wall/door between the bathroom area and the rest of the room which is a consideration if you have a problem with this kind of setup. There is non-locking door for the shower and the toilet. Every room has a jacuzzi tub, a liquor bottle dispenser with 4 bottles of liquor, a fairly large LCD TV, a fridge stocked with beer and soft drinks (refilled every 2 days), and a safe. Housekeeping did their job every day as expected and left nice towel art, etc. Room service is available, but we didn't use it. There were a couple of minor maintenance issues: one of sinks did not drain which was fixed within 20 minutes, and a broken handle on the toilet door which was fixed within a day. Beach and Pool: The beach is excellent. The best in the Playa Arena Gorda area (we checked out surrounding resorts to compare). Wide, picturesque with plenty of palm trees, and long. Never a problem getting loungers at any location on the beach and no towel games being played at this resort. Water was very clear and turquoise in color. The pool is nice, but there is only one swimmable pool, unless you staying at the adult only VIP section which as two exclusive small pools. The main pool as well as the VIP pools have swim-up bars. Plenty of loungers, but the main pool did get busy at afternoon activities time around 3:30. What I didn't like is that the pools close at 6PM. Dining: The main buffet is very good for an all-inclusive. I liked that they had smoked salmon and omelette station for breakfast, a good cheese selection for all meals, and select nights for dinner they had Caribbean lobster, crab claws. etc, although preparation of some of those items could have been better. Plenty of seafood and fresh fruit was available. The dinner theme changes every night, but they always had a pasta station running. Avoid Sushi night like the plague, Dominican sushi is terrible at each resort I've been to. Service was usually spot on with drinks brought quickly, and the waiters did not have a problem getting items from the lobby bar for us that were not available at the buffet. There also a smaller buffet by the pool with a limited selection that is open for lunch. The a-la-cartes did not require reservations but were hit or miss on quality. Krystal/Kulinarium (same menu) were very good. We tried the duck, beef filet, and sea bass, all good. The steakhouse however mediocre at best. The NY strp was super thin and overcooked and the lobster was no different than what they had at the buffet. We did not try the Italian or the Japanese. Bars: The best liquor and drink preparation can be found at the lobby bar and the bar by the theater. They have mid-grade imported spirits here, and very good Dominican rum - Brugal Extra Viejo and Barcelo Imperial. Mojitos and Caipirinhas at these bars are great. See picture for some of what they have available. The pool bar and sports bar have significantly lower quality alcohol. Service at all bars was great and the waiter/bartenders were doing an excellent job. As is usually the case in such establishments, unless you ask for a specific liquor, they will use the cheapest domestic well liquor. There is also a coffee bar in the lobby that had delicious espresso/cappuccino and deserts. All normal bars close at midnight and the only bar that remains open during the night is the sports bar. Entertainment: The RIU Palace is not really a party resort so they don't do much drinking games or crazy pool parties. That being said, they have a fun and energetic animation team that does their best keep all willing guest entertained. They run various activities such as dancing lessons, yoga, darts, and volleyball at the beach from about 10:30 to 12:30. They then move the fun over to the pool at about 3:30 PM where they will do pool games of various kinds until about 5:00 PM. In the evening, they have live music/dancing at the stage starting a little before 9 PM, followed by typical resort shows of varying quality at the theater starting at 9:45 PM, followed by more music/dancing that goes to about 11:30 PM. If one wishes to continue the party after that time, there is a resort disco - Pacha. The Pacha starts picking up shortly after midnight, is usually at capacity by 1:00 AM and stays open until 4:00 AM. We went a few times and had lots of fun, although drinks are an extra charge. There is also a cover charge Wednesdays when they have a strip show. Kids Club: The kids club at RIU Palace Bavaro is small and limited in scope. The animation team doubles up as kids club workers and will only supervise kids between the times of 10:00 AM-12:00 PM and 3:00 PM-5:00 PM. There is also a mini-disco for kids at the theater at 8:00 PM. Water Park: There is a new water park that opened this past winter, located behind the adjoining RIU Naiboa property. Fun for about 1-2 hours for both adults and kids. They have an adult slide section with about 6 big slides including a toboggan slide and a slide with a centrifuge at the bottom. Height/age requirements for this section are 1m 20cm in height or 12 years in age. They also have a children's section with children's slides and a row of water sprayers. There are also complimentary bar and loungers at the water park. Resort Exchange and Casino: RIU Palace Bavaro guests have exchange privileges (restaurants, bars, pools) with the following RIU resorts: RIU Palace Punta Cana, RIU Bambu, RIU Naiboa. RIU Palace Bavaro guests cannot use the facilities at the adults only RIU Palace Macao other than the casino. The casino is tiny and drinks are an extra charge.
