Great Anniversary Trip

Stayed here for a week with my wife and another couple for our anniversary. We loved everything about the resort, location, and the beach. The white sand beach stretched as far as you could see in either direction accompanied by palm trees everywhere. The resort was nice with several pools and chairs everywhere. We enjoyed the shows each night. The food was very good from the buffets to specialty restaurants. The Riu Pool Party area was great as well. Thanks for a memorable anniversary trip!

RIO doesn't advertise, nor do they need to. They have a FANTASTIC estate that my at the time girlfriend and I stayed at. The staff was fantastic, the night time entertainment was alot of fun, impeccably clean. A great selection of on site dining, just be sure for dinner you get your reservations in early! Great buffet. Even pool side daytime entertainment, aside from the pool bar.... winning. I would totally suggest this place and return whenever I have an occasion to. I love it.

Back from a full week at Riu Palace Bavaro, full review

Just got home from a weeks vacation at Riu Palace Bavaro, I don't normally write reviews but I read so many of them leading up to this trip I thought it might be helpful for someone else. The range of reviews from horrible to amazing really made me apprehensive about this vacation, I traveled with my wife and 4 kids, their ages are 16, 13, 13 and 10. We got adjoining rooms, Garden View Junior Suites. This is a long review, but I hope it helps for anyone considering this as a vacation destination. First I will say the pro's mightily weighed out the cons, I will start with pros. - The grounds are absolutely beautiful, they are so nicely manicured and taken care of everywhere you look is really breathtaking. The grounds crew seem to work around the clock keeping everything just perfect. - I read many reviews that said the hotel itself was in disrepair, dirty, etc. I'm not sure what expectations people have but that was not our experience at all. While the hotel and rooms are not brand new, the rooms were big, clean, we had no problems with that at all. I never saw a single bug in either of our rooms, the towels and linens were clean and fresh, and the rooms smelled and felt clean. It did not feel outdated to us at all. I would agree some areas in the hallways and rooms looked like they could use a fresh coat of paint but that was about it. - The wait staff, entertainment staff, bartenders and even housekeeping were second to none. Every person you saw greeted you with a smile, asked you how you were doing, asked if you needed anything. The bartenders at the main pool bar knew our names by the second day, were incredibly friendly giving everyone high fives as they came to the bar. The alcohol selection and choice of specialty drinks was great, and they would make them however you wanted. I would caveat that with we did tip the bartenders, not massive amounts of money but usually $1 per drink. I'm sure we got some extra special attention because of that, but I watched plenty of people not tipping and they were treating them just as good as they treated us. - All of the surrounding RIU Resorts were within walking distance, all with their own pools and bars that you can use as if they were your own. - The entertainment staff was always around getting people involved in activities on the beach and at the pool, but they weren't pushy. They would see you walking to breakfast and quickly tell you about activities happening at the resort later on in the day and at night. They really did a good job of keeping everyone from adults to kids involved and entertained. One hour they might have drinking games at the pool for the adults, and another hour they would have dancing games for the kids. They would organize volleyball, beach soccer and dart games. There was never not something to do for all age groups, but you have to be willing to get involved! - The staff at main dining area which is the buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner were probably the nicest people we've ever met. They were so accommodating, so friendly, smiles, high fives and light conversation while they sat you down every day. They brought drinks quickly and cleaned up your tables as you dined. I really can't say enough about them. The food at the buffet for dinner changed daily which was really nice, we never got tired of eating there. The food was fresh and delicious and there was a huge selection from seafood to a pasta station, salad bars, desserts, everything you could ever want for adults and kids. - Housekeeping always cleaned our rooms beautifully, they would even stop by in the evenings and knock on your door to see if you needed extra towels etc. - The beaches were gorgeous, we were concerned about the amount of seaweed because we are beach lovers but it really was not an issue. There was a decent amount of seaweed on the beaches but they did a good job of keeping up with it, and the water itself was warm, sandy and beautiful. - The water park was a 10 minute walk to an adjacent Riu resort and was really fun, you couldn't spend an entire day there but our entire family went a couple of times for an hour or two. - The Sports bar has a couple of pool tables, air hockey, foose ball and a few video games. If the kids were looking for something to do for an hour or two while we got ready for dinner they would walk down there and play some games, you did have to pay for them though with tokens. - We never felt like security was an issue anywhere on the resort, everything felt totally safe and we had no experiences that made us feel unsafe even after dark. Now for the Cons - While the staff was really exceptional, the only exception was probably the front desk. They were nice, but they are not nearly as nice as the rest of the staff. We weren't greeted as openly as we had hoped when we first showed up, and if we had to go to the front desk they kind of made it seem like you were bothering them. That being said, check in was quick and painless. We were checked in and up to our rooms in about 15 minutes. - The rooms are stocked with liquor dispensers and a fridge with mixers and soda, there is a sign under the alcohol that says its refilled every 2 days, it's not. Ours was mostly empty when we got there and we had to ask to have it refilled. We also had to go to the front desk 4 times to have the cream and sugar packets for our coffee refilled, as well as water and soda. That was frustrating. - They really try and drive the crowds to certain places at certain times which we found frustrating some days. Most of the casual sit down places to get quick food generally close at 5:30, the pool and main pool bar close at 6:00PM, then the restaurants open at 6:00. This seems very intentional as they are trying to get people away from the bars and pool and into dinner. Then after dinner to the entertainment area and additional bars. We would have loved to spend some nights until 8:00 or 9:00 at the pool while the kids swam, and had drinks at the pool bar. That's not to say there weren't still places to get some quick food and drinks at all hours. - Besides the buffet the other restaurants really didn't impress us. The Japanese restaurant was only open 3 of the nights we were there, there was a long wait and we didn't care for the food there. The steak house was good but not great, and the other restaurants just didn't have enough on the menu to accommodate all of us. As we looked at the menus and glanced at the dishes other people were eating none of the other restaurants really appealed to us. That's just an opinion though other people were raving about those restaurants. We walked to the other resorts, but all of the restaurants were the same with the same menus. Thank goodness for the buffet, which in my opinion was not a typical buffet. The food was fresh and delicious and there was an amazing variety that we really never got tired of. - There is a large stage / entertainment area with tons of seating, a full bar, and there are "shows" every night. Unfortunately a lot of the shows were just workers from the entertainment staff on stage with some of the guests ( a lot of times kids ), doing games and such that weren't really entertaining. Karaoke night there was a lot of fun, and a couple of the shows had actual performers that were fun to watch. The drinks and service there was great, you could eat and drink to your hearts content while you watched, we just hoped they would have better entertainment every night. Overall it was really a great vacation and we would definitely recommend it to friends and family. Feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Not great

Just got back from staying at riu bavaro, disappointed with this hotel as as whole. Food was not good, specialty restaurants were a utter joke. Basically were forced into the buffet everynite to eat. No variety what so ever in the type of foods that were available daily. Employees were not well versed in the english language, some were exceptionally rude.the whole key towel thing is ridiculous, people steal ur towel than u have to fight tooth and nail to get towels again.chairs at beach were always dirty, and of poor quality. Seaweed daily on beach. This resort, unlike others, chooses to let adorn the beach instead of taking care of it daily.annoying vendors, or excursion people bugging the hell out of u wen ur trying to relax on beach. We have stayed at other all inclusives, this one needs alot of improvements!!!...stay elsewhere!!
