I stayed here with my partner, and 6 of my family during September 2018. The resort is well kept and this is a beach that I am only too familiar with. This was at one point Riu’s flagship, but sadly it has fallen behind for a couple of really minor points. Good:- Adult villas nice, the swim up pool service was great, the pool area was nice and it’s good to have separation from the children on site if you’re travelling as adults. The bavaro guests also had access to the other Riu Hotels on resort and we visited the Punta Cana a couple of times which has just been renovated and was really lively and nice the steak house was good, never had any complaints food wise or service wise The gym on site is ok, it’s got a couple of pieces of equipment and was quiet early morning so happy with that. The coffee shop was good, The Italian restaurant was good too. Drinks- I never had any problems with my drinks or the options available. Service was okay- not the best but I never personally had any problems. Not so good:- The main buffet was really sub-standard. the food was VERY repetitive, never labelled properly and sometimes not warm. The service in there was hit and miss too. Other Riu resorts have done the theme nights in the buffet which is usually really good, but this one didn’t, and didn’t make much effort at all. The sports bar was probably the worst place, this is an indoor room where smoking is still permitted and to say it’s disgusting is an understatement. Really disappointed as have experienced brilliant sports bars at other hotels Room service- this is almost nonexistent. Just a choice of three items, not good enough for this size/type of resort. The sports bar only had sandwiches and hotdogs/nacho’s, so if you were hungry after hours the food options weren’t good enough. (Never know this to be like this) Rooms need renovating, but I did see some works going on outside some rooms so maybe this has begun. Evening entertainment - just really average, I’ve seen far far better across the Caribbean. The lobby/lounge should have live music, create more of an ambience away from the show giving guests a varied option in the evening. I’m not going to comment on the beach, it’s a great beach, but a rising tide and seaweed is affecting this whole stretch of beach quite badly, much like a lot of the Caribbean islands. Don’t let it put you off, it varies by day/week Overall, a nice holiday, but would like the points addressing before I’d recommend to others

Do NOT stay here

Let me preface this by saying I have traveled extensively. I have used Air BnB, stayed in European hostels, various resorts in the Caribbean, etc. This is by far the most frustrating and disappointing place I have ever stayed - 90% of this frustration was caused by the apathy and lack of response from management. I would also like to say that the staff at the restaurants and bars was excellent. One of the most stressful aspects was that we moved rooms 5 times. By the third room, they literally took us on a tour of potential rooms to choose from. Almost all of the rooms had black mold and visible water damage due to the open bathroom/bedroom layout. I can deal with lots of things, but with allergies there is no putting up with mold (not to mention it can be downright dangerous). In two of the rooms the air conditioning didn't work. At one point, maintainence came up at 10pm to "bleed" the brown liquid out of the AC that wasn't working into our tub (conveniently located right next to the bed). It stunk like sewage. Also, our room safe locked our stuff in it twice (malfunction) and almost made us miss our excursions. These excursions (we paid extra) were the one bright spot and our way to escape the monotony of this resort. Throughout all of this, we heard not one "sorry" or "let me rectify this". By room change #5, they left us a "VIP" letter and a 5€ bottle of sparkling wine. Too little, way too late. In summary, spend your money elsewhere. Avoid this place at all costs!

I have mixed feelings about this resort. If you're visiting Bavaro/Punta Cana for the first time, dont make this resort your first choice. And I'll tell you why. The property doesn't have the tropical resort look, access to the beach is awful, daytime entertainment is awful, they have about 8 pools in which only one has music and is rap all they long. The rooms are very comfy but they refill the mini bar every two days, No room service, no Jacuzzi or hydromassager in the rooms, The good thing about the resort, the staff😁wow experience. Restaurants are nice and for me that's about it. There's a lot nicer resorts in the area, with a wonderful ocean view, easy access to the beach for a better price. I left a day earlier got bored to tears☹ have a wonderful vacation,🥂🥂.and explore the Island, is beautifu

The food, service, cleanliness and friendliness of all the staff is excellent Considering this hotel is only 8 years old the maintenance is poor On the first night there were 5 power cuts and we had to find our way back to the room by the torches on our mobile phones We moved room the next day as although we had booked a junior suite facing the gardens we were facing the theatre and directly over the night club The noise from that was horrendous and went on until midnight. This was clearly the worst room in the complex and spoilt our next day as we had had no proper sleep being 5 hours behind the U K We moved rooms on our own but can still hear the disco which goes on until midnight The next day we had no water and our toilet would not function. This was fixed two hours later. To date we have had to return to reception 6 times as our key cards would not work.As it had not been near a phone it was clearly the fault of the door ? they said they would get someone to look at it.When we enquired whether it had been done they said they could not remember. It took 2 hours and 2 phone calls to get the remote for the tv replaced as the battery Inside had clearly not been changed since the hotel had been built. They tried to tell me how to use a remote control which did not go down well I can tell you.We are now on day 11 and yet again we have no hot water. We have phoned reception and they said they were sending someone immediately ??After an hour we have hot water but no phone call telling us it has been fixed This hotel is half full at best WHY is nothing functioning ?We came here out of school holidays but unfortunately it is full of families with very young kids and crying babies.Do not come here if you want a quiet break It is virtually impossible to get away from the noise day and evening. All in all what a shame lovely setting great people but very poor maintenance. We are both in our seventies and wanted a stress free break. We are also not complainers and have stayed in many hotels all over the world but this has got to be one of the worst. We are staying at another Riu in February Let's hope it's better than this

I’ve stayed at RIU hotels before in Playa del Carmen and Riviera Maya but never in Punta Cana. I thought because it was a RIU resort, it would be a spectacular stay. We had a group of 25 to celebrate a friend’s 60th bday. Upon arrival the front desk staff was very friendly. We found out some of our group upgraded rooms to have access to VIP pools. We were told we’d be charged $200 a room for upgrades. We let them know we had a group of 25, they gave everyone different upgrade prices and told some theyd have to pay in cash. Think they were pocketing the money. My boyfriend and I had to be changed 2x. The 1st room upgrade the ceiling fell down from water damage the 2nd day we were there. You’d think they refund the upgrade money but they wouldn’t. The 2nd room we got, the door handle to the commode area fell off in your hand when closing the door. We had to put it back on very carefully so as not to be stuck in there. Called 3 times to have them fix it, even showed it to the maid, no one ever came to fix it. The room safe never worked. The last night we were there the resort lost power 5 times during eve dinner. Note, while power is out, you don’t have access to running water, no rest rooms. You can however get into your room. Food was mediocre at best. It was just an awful experience. Upon check out and again asking for our upgrade credit, we were told that since we used a credit card, they could not credit us back. We were told by our shuttle driver this resort is 20 years old. I don’t think they’re putting anymore money into it and it shows. The rooms & grounds are pretty but nothing works.
