Not the Best, sorry to complain

Unfortunately, I felt like I wasted my hard earned money coming here. It was not at all what I was expecting, although I did look at hundreds of photographs and read countless reviews. The reviews weren't all that good, but being in the service industry I realize more people complain than praise. I maybe gave the resort too much credit before even arriving. This was my second time at an all-inclusive so I had an idea what to expect and so I booked vip, which is like preferred or gold, and went up a hotel class (at least I thought I had). First impression when I walked into the lobby was the musty smell of mold and mildew (similar to an unfinished basement). It was awful. Not everyone has a heightened sense of smell like I do so I'm not sure if it affects everyone. it was 2:50 in the afternoon when we arrived and the guy at the front desk quickly gave us our wristbands and sent us off to the main buffet to eat before they close at 3pm and to come back after to finish checking in. I guess it was a nice thing to do but after my long trip I would've preferred going to my room and then go from there. There are options for food 24 hours a day so I'm not sure what the rush was for. As soon as we get to our room, 4412 in the VIP section, which are all villas, not the main hotel, I immediately smelled the same musty smell. To top it off I paid extra not only for VIP, but for ocean view. There was no ocean view, not a tiny bit of it at all, not a sliver. So its smelly and no view except of the pool and gardens. I get that the trees grew in, but then don't sell the room to me as ocean view if that costs more. So I try and be relaxed but I'm still upset about the view and went to front desk and asked for a different room, but the guy is rude and tells me they are fully booked. I go back to the room and the floor is all wet and the walls look sweaty and all the mirrors and windows are fogged up. Cleary, there is a moisture situation going on. There is also bubbly paint around the ac unit above the tub. upon further investigation I realize that they must paint the place quite often but they missed a few spots, under the dresser I could see moldy wall and next to the side of the liquor dispenser same thing. Next day I went back to desk and told them I could not stand the musty moldy smell and they immediately changed my room to the one directly above the one I was currently in. At first I was upset about being in the same building, but this guy was much nicer and asked if I would go check it out. It did not smell musty at all and I could see no moldy walls and also There was actual ocean view through the trees. This room, 4422, did not get sweaty walls and floor or foggy mirrors and windows without us even taking showers. I ate at the main buffet, the steakhouse, the Italian (which was awful) and somewhere along the way I got sick by the second day my stomach was cramping all day and night and it was not fun. I didn't drink the tap water. I don't know what caused it. My husband was okay until the 4th day. Luckily we were about to go home. I would have starved. I was okay to do everything but I didn't feel well and was fighting it. I could smell the musty smell at the main buffet when the kitchen doors would open. I only went in the vip pool without the swim up and it was so nice and quiet. The main pool was very loud and crowded. I was able to use a poolside bali bed every time I went to the vip pool. The beach was lovely with many loungers under the many palm trees. I never had a problem getting a beach lounger. The place had very manicured lawns and some un-fountainly fountains. It wasn't tropical enough for me, too square, too cut. That's only my opinion and the place was very clean looking. Didn't make me want to come back, which is a first for me. Only the pool and beach made me give 2 stars for the review

We have stayed in many hotels around the world and in several "all inclusive" locations - this resort surpasses most. The rooms are ideal. Large, airy and very clean - remember to tip your maid each day or two and you will get regular refills of your fridge ! The facilities are good with an adequate air conditioned gym onsite The pools are a little on the small side considering it is an 800 room complex - but they are adequate. The bars and staff are great. Had so much fun at the pool bar with the regular shows the team put on. Well done The scenery and the beach are stunning. One minor issue is seaweed ..... but the hotel remove most of it each day to clean the beach..... but it's a natural event so not something anyone can blame Riu for! The complex is spotlessly clean and the grounds perfectly maintained. These is only one negative ..... the food. Everything is fried and I believe this may be responsible for some of the stomach upsets our party of 7 experienced. Again it would be wrong to say there is anything that can be done about it .... some people respond badly to changes of diet and when you travel half way round the world don't expect them to serve English cuisine! Would I go again - in a heartbeat! What would I change ? - pay for VIP upgrade to get away from some of the noise and repetitive Latino music blaring most of the day! I recommend Tui for their package deal and look forward to going to Jamaica next time we go away!

The best birthday vacation ever!!!!!!!!!

This is a late review but anyways my boyfriend and I travelled to the Riu Palace Bavaria for my birthday in November 2016. This was the best vacation I've ever been on. Everyone at this hotel is super friendly, hotel grounds are beautiful and well maintained and everything is always clean. The beach is also great! Food- the food at the palace is very good! My boyfriend is a seafood lover and was very impressed with the quality seafood. Our drinks were always good, my favourite is the Coco Rosa. I can go on forever about how amazing this resort was. I will definitely come back to the Riu Palace Bavaro!!!

The most relaxing holiday

Visited this hotel in June 2016, very surprised with some other reviews I have read about this hotel as I had one of the best holidays here that I will always compare with any future holidays. Our room was immaculate and the hot tub bath is amazing in the room! The room was very modern and pleased in every area. There are about 3-4 pools some are more busy full of families etc and some more quiet and relaxing. We were VIP guests so had a very quite and relaxing pool. The beach is beautiful also. There is night entertainment and a pasha club so there is stuff to do in the night but it's more of a family hotel therefore hotel entertainment ends reasonably early. Would love to return to this hotel

Two weeks in paradise??? Really? Riu Palace Punta Cana / Riu Palace Bavaro

We just returned from a 2-week “vacation” at the Riu Palace Punta Cana – well it was supposed to be at the Riu Palace Punta Cana! My wife, our 2 teenage daughters and I flew down to Punta Cana on Thursday July 27th. We were on the evening flight out of Atlanta, arriving in the DR at 9:30 PM. By the time we got our luggage and found our driver, we finally got to the hotel by about 10:30 PM. When I approached the receptionist at the check-in desk in the hotel lobby, he advised me that they did not have the 2 rooms for us, as we had booked. He told me that they were over-booked. I’ve heard about this on airlines, but never at a hotel resort! What they did have was 2 rooms for us at a nearby sister resort, the Riu Palace Bavaro. I was not happy about this! It didn’t help that the receptionist wasn’t at all apologetic and had this annoying smirk on his face the whole time he was dealing with us! We waited 20 minutes for them to call a taxi to drive us over to the other hotel. We checked in and I asked to see the hotel Manager. I was told that he would be available the following morning. This is an all-inclusive resort. At all-inclusive resorts you are given a colorful bracelet that you have to wear at all times to prove that you are staying at the hotel and to give you access to the restaurants and bars. They did not have bracelets available for us as they had been locked in the safe for the night! We trooped off to our rooms and ordered room service (from a very limited menu I might add!). The next morning we all went down to the reception desk and I asked to see the Manager. Nelson came over and I explained our situation. He told us that this happens all the time! He said that we should be happy because we had been moved to a better hotel, that was actually more expensive that the Riu Palace Punta Cana. I told him that that was irrelevant because I had chosen the other hotel for the pool, the restaurants and for the reviews on TripAdvisor. He said that he wanted us to be happy and that he would move us over to the first hotel as soon as there were rooms available for us. We asked if that was the best thing he could do for us as we felt that we had been badly messed around. He then decided that he would make it up to us by moving us to the VIP area of his hotel. My wife and I agreed that this would be a fair way to compensate us for the trouble we’d experienced. I explained to Nelson how important this trip was for our family. I had booked the vacation for the family for some much needed rest and relaxation time after my wife had survived her battle with breast cancer earlier this year. So we were told to come back to the reception at 3 PM the following day and they would move us over to the VIP area. Finally we could relax and begin to enjoy the vacation. Well, for a couple of days at least! We moved to the new rooms on the Saturday afternoon. On the Sunday afternoon after lunch I began to feel very unwell. I ended up laid up in bed with gastroenteritis for the next three days. My wife got some Antidiarrheal medication for me and by the Thursday I was beginning to feel better. I went for lunch with the family and returned to my room. Within 30 minutes of lunch my lower lip began to swell and it became obvious that I was having an allergic reaction to something I had eaten. Our eldest daughter took me straight to the on-site medical office where I was seen by two Doctors. They were concerned enough about my dehydration and the swelling to send me straight to the nearest hospital, Hospiten Bávaro. There I saw three more Doctors who decided to put me on an intravenous saline drip for the dehydration with antihistamine medication for the allergic reaction. After the 1st liter of fluids, they decided that I was in no condition to leave and I was admitted overnight for observation, on a saline drip with continued antihistamine meds. I was discharged from the hospital at 10:00 AM the following morning after the general internist Doctor had been in to check on me. The mouth swelling had gone down and she was happy that I was no longer dehydrated. For the remaining 6 days of our trip, everything was very relaxed! We did a snorkeling excursion to Catalina Island which was fantastic – highly recommend it. While I was laid up, the wife and daughters did a zip-line excursion, a dune buggy excursion and a Segway excursion, which was easily the best of the three. I played 2 rounds of golf – Punta Blanca which was OK, and Corales which was spectacular! If you don’t mind playing in the afternoon, tee-times after 1:00 PM save you $100 at Corales! The fee paid includes collection from your hotel and return after the round. Riu Palace Bavaro is certainly not a 5 star hotel by any means. The buffet was mediocre at best. The best restaurant was easily the Kulinarium. Our room had a very musty smell. When we got home, all of our clothes had picked up the smell. The foyer of the hotel and the foyer bar had a similar musty smell. The beach is beautiful. There are no umbrellas on the beach but there is ample shade under the palm trees. There was a seaweed issue while we were there, but that was not a big deal to us. Once in the sea, there were areas of rocks, which was a bit of a pain. The VIP area gave us access to the 2 quiet pools that were kid-free. One of them had a swim-up bar which was very nice. The swim-up bar in the main pool was always very crowded and noisy. When you are on the beach, there is no waiter bar service.
