Arriving at the Aruba Airport (transportation)
TIMOTHY B.
Apr 09 2018
So upon arrival we were told as always, "look for the Apple representative in the floral shirts". We've had excellent service with Apple vacations before. In the Aruba airport there are not "apple representatives". We asked "funjet" where the Apple Reps were and they responded "outside - yellow shirts" but....it's called DePalm Tours Aruba. We were leary to go on this bus thinking it was something else but they said "yes apple, youre good", so we and others got on the bus. A little confusing but yes they did get us to our hotel. In the hotel instead of an "Apple vacations desk", it was DePalm Tours. We did book an excursion thru them and also they did give us our transportation back to the airport. No problems at all, just confusion as to why there were no "apple floral shirts", yellow banana shirts.

Riu Palace was an excellent choice. Close to restaurants and shopping. Everyone was so kind. Food was delicious! Only complaint beds are very hard and not enough restrooms close to beach and pool.

I understand that shit happens and this time it was the weather conditions. No biggie. We can not control the weather so its understandable. What my issue was this time was the Riu Palace Aruba Resort and De Palms Tours. First the agent Geordina Vrolijk who was the lady sitting at the De Palms desk at the Rui, was completely rude to us. She was arguing with someone on the phone and made us wait at least 5 minutes and also miss our first bus because of the issues we were having. But the way things turned out then its a good thing we missed the bus. Second when we did speak with her, she was demanding that we get on the next bus cause her butt would be on the line. Even though our flight was delayed like 8 hours. Then when we tried to ask her what we should do all she said was to figure it out and then get on the bus with our ticket. She acted like we were an inconvenience to her and she didn't want to bother with us at all. Thirdly i went to go talk to her after our flight had been canceled She was again on the phone arguing with someone and had put her sign up on the desk that said "closed". this was around 3:20 PM. I then said screw it and walked away. After i walked away form her desk i then went over to the check in desk at the Riu to see if they had a room for one night that we could have and was pretty much dismissed. The guy told me "No, We are completely booked. You will have to go else where. " He then said maybe the Riu next door has some availability to go see them" and I was dismissed. Now, We are stuck in Aruba with no room and our flight was still unknown at that time. I was angry, stressed and just worn out. We have went to the Riu Twice now and should have been three times but the first time was the fire. and we had planned on coming back next year"2019" and I was amazed on how they weren't even trying to help us out. I was so pissed off I then told Patric go to next hotel over "Divi Resorts" to see what they can do for us. They tried earlier in the week to get us to stay with them next time but at that time we told them "no, we like the Riu". Well, I was not happy with the Riu so he walked over to Divi Resorts and explained our situation. They gave us a room for just the cost of the taxes. $40 And was going to have it ready for us in 1 hour. Divi helped us and the Riu didn't want to bother with us. Another thing I want to mention is the the Riu needs to improve on the beds. They are hard as a rock and the pillows are flat.

We had made our reservation in the adult only but when we arrived we were put in family (which was fine) I did wonder if there was a price difference. The coupons are a joke may be in your letter don't stress so much that you give a credit for $600.00-$700.00 credit to use at resort. We wanted to have a couples spa day and the coupon was $50.00 for the most expensive couples spa. Talking to other guests no one really used the coupons and were not impressed with the coupons. For the music at the pool maybe so english music every once in a while. All in all we loves the Rui and was very pleased with the staff.

Beautiful View, Friendly Workers, Great Food

My daughters and I stayed at this hotel on our recent trip to Aruba. This hotel met and exceeded all my expectations. We were fortunate to be upgraded to an ocean view junior suite and boy, did the view wow us every day of our visit. This is a great hotel to stay at with kids. They have activities every day by the pool and at night, the entertainment is terrific. We always were able to get a lounge chair by the pool, but if you wanted a palapa on the beach, you needed to get their early and stake your claim. They offer free water activities - kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, and floats with ID. The food at the hotel was really good. From the buffet to the 4 on-site restaurants. We tried them all. The only issue with the on-site restaurants was that the food was not kid-friendly. So, I would recommend just doing the buffet. The staff on-site at the hotel were super friendly and spoke English very well. I had been at another Riu hotel in Cancun, but this one was far superior. Highly recommend, especially if you have children.

No negative review from me!

Prior to my trip,I encountered some really negative reviews regarding rooms smelling musty, fish being bad,and not to eat it. All I can say is this vacation was one of the best I've been on. I was impressed with the food. Everything was delicious, including the seafood, and I had no stomach issues eating at any of the restaurants. Either did my husband. Our room was gorgeous, and very large and comfortable. There was no musty odor in our room,as stated in a review on Trip Advisor. The bathroom was quite spacious, and clean. Only negative there was the need for a better hair dryer. The one on the wall had no power to it. I also would like to commend the person who thought to include magnifying mirrors for those of us who need one to put makeup on. I would like to suggest that a clock be put in the room,on the nightstand, so you could see what time of the day it is. Outside at pools and beach, there was reserving of chairs and tiki huts with towels, obviously done early in am, making it difficult to secure something shaded on beach or at the pool. Other than that, you'd be crazy not to try the RIU!

Amazing is the word to describe this hotel. The staff always greeted you with a smile and made you feEl like you are the most important guest there. I am not a fan of buffets but let me say this the buffet was at least 10 stations and the food was served in small batches which meant it was always fresh. The buffet was better than the restaurants this does not mean that the restaurants were sub part because they were wonderful. The grounds were immaculate and the pool was enormous and clean. The beach was great and when you walked onto the beach there was a young man who would find you a spot and bring you a lounge chair. THEY say not to tip but these people were so fantastic I left many tips and they were extremely grateful. Bottom line don't miss out on going to the RIU Aruba. We will absolutely be going back and looking for a Riu in other travels

Wonderful resort

we had a junior suite, worth the extra money, nice seating area, wonderful balcony we loved sitting out on and watching the sail boats go by, we could also hear the music and entertainment. The restaurants were great, there were 4 specialty restaurants and then the main buffet. Plenty of food, tried different things that I had not eaten before. The refrigerator was kept filled of pop, water and beer. Great bar service at the pool area. Nice little casino and a walkway that connected to the other Riu resort that also had a casino and retail shops.

Overrated due to location

This hotel is average at best. I stayed here with family and i had a fun time but by no means was this hotel worth it. It is a huge hotel which makes it very crowded. I did not like all the rules that they, especially no shorts at the one restaurant. The rooms were ok. My wife hated them. I was not a fan of the pillows, they were horrible. The food was ok with a few things that I'd say were really good. I thought the buffet had better food than most of the on-site restaurants. The pool is pretty nice and i really liked the chairs in the water. The mc blasting music etc throughout the day was quite annoying. The staff was pretty good and we had a few that we really looked a lot. The location is perfect right on the water and far enough back to have a wide beach. I loved Aruba and thought it was just beautiful, but i don't plan to ever go to a Riu location again. There are also many other places there that are much nicer.

This was our 7th trip to Aruba and our 4th trip to the Riu Palace. We hadn't stayed here for a few years (stayed at the Hyatt and Occidental-now Bavaro the last 3 visits). We chose the Riu because the price was much lower than the Hyatt and for the money we saved we went out to dinner most evenings and had lunch down the beach most days. Having 2 older children we always reserve 2 rooms. We requested the rooms be near each other and they were. We were always in the main building with a beautiful view of the pool and beach but not this time. We were in Building B with a partial ocean view and a full view of a cement wall. However, the room was very comfortable with a real queen bed and no issues with the air conditioning. No musty odor or damp floors which was great. The balcony was large with a hot tub! Where the Riu dropped the ball was the room my kids were in. Two older children (20's) - a boy and a girl and one queen bed. We ended up getting a twin rolled in which worked but it wasn't ideal. This was a deal breaker - won't stay here again. We had breakfast at the hotel each morning and the buffet is lovely. I walked down to Eduardo's Beach Shack every afternoon for an Acai bowl for lunch. Highly recommend the bowls here. We had dinner at the buffet our first evening and went to restaurants the rest of the week. The buffet was fine but with so many restaurants in the area and on the island it is a waste to eat here every evening. The hotel areas are very clean and our room was spotless. Nice shower and there was a magnifying mirror which was nice. Drinks in the refrigerator were replenished every day. Absolutely loved the coffee bar in the lobby. I wish it opened earlier but the cappuccino and milkshakes were delicious. We like to sit at the pool and there was never a problem getting chairs. There was shade but the umbrellas could be better. Hard to tell if they actually protect you from the sun or not. Drink service by the pool was great. They came around often for our drink orders. Sometimes the pool bar was busy but generally not an issue. I highly recommend bringing your own large drink cup rather than get a small plastic cup each time. It is not a quiet, peaceful pool but the music never bothered us. (Just a note, the pool is very cold - not sure why it's not warmer with the beautiful Aruba weather.)

My husband and I are in Aruba now. We took a ride to explore other hotels (as we do on any vacation) and decided to check out the Hotel Riu. As grandiose as it appears from the outside it’s quite disappointing on the inside. We decided to walk down to the pool area for a cocktail and we were turned away because we were not guest of the hotel. Not a very welcoming visit for tourists who maybe thinking of staying there on our next visit. This turned both my husband and I off for ever going back to the Riu. Very unwelcoming hotel for such a grand appearance.

Worst Hotel we ever stayed at.

My wife and I checked into your RIU Palace in Aruba on March 6, 2018 and were suppose to check out on March 13. On Friday the 9th at around 1:00 PM I called from the room to let them know that the air condition blower was making a loud screeching and rumbling sound. We than went back to the pool for the day. We came back around 5:00 PM to shower and go to dinner, the AC was not fixed I just assumed they were busy and didn’t get to it yet. We came back to the room about 11:30 PM and it was still not fixed. I knew at that hour nobody was going to show up if I called again, so I decided I’d call in the morning. Well during the night I got very sick it turned out to be food poisoning, we had eaten at the buffet. I was so sick I never got back out of the room until Sunday afternoon. Today as I’m writing this (Wednesday March 4) I’m just getting back to normal. I called again on Saturday morning to get the AC repaired nobody showed up again so we put up with the noise for another night and didn’t sleep again. Sunday I didn’t even bother calling I just figure its Sunday no way is anybody coming. So we spent virtually 3 nights in a row with little or no sleep. Early Monday morning I went up to the front desk and asked to speak to a Manager. The woman said I’m a Supervisor, can I help you. So I explained to her everything written above. There was virtually no offer to change the room, no apology, nothing at all. At that point I made a decision we have to get out of this place. I told her we’ll be checking out today. She offered no compensation at all so I asked for it. She told me since I booked though Expedia I have to contact them, I told her the only reason I booked though Expedia is because the RIU Web site directed me there. That meant nothing to her; she gave me a piece of paper with the RIU email address. I went back to the room and told my wife we are leaving I’m not spending another night here listening to the AC in the room and I’m afraid to eat here, on Sunday we had already starting eating off site except for toast and coffee in the morning. While she was packing I called Expedia to see what they could do, they told me stay on the line I’ll call the Hotel. About ten minutes later he came back on the line and said to me they will do nothing you have to write a letter to customer service. I was flabbergasted this is the way this Hotel does business. So that’s what I’m doing writing to you to see how you are going to compensate me for suffering with the food poisoning and loss of my vacation for four days, not sleeping for three days, paying for food off site for Sunday for my wife and I, lunch and dinner on Saturday for my wife off site. I also checked out a day early, we checked out at 11:45 AM on Monday instead of Tuesday. I’m not looking to stay at any of your Hotels again. I’ve attached our receipt for food on Sunday night; my wife did not save her receipt from Saturday’s lunch or dinner. The RIU response is below. But first I would like to say my wife and I have been traveling all over for 40 years and have never had an experience like this or been treated like this before. Another thing that we did not like and other couples mention it also is the load head banging music. It is non-stop from around 10:00 AM until 11:00 PM. It consist of three screaming girls who screamed because they could note carry a note in a suitcase. It started out at the pool and than moved up outside in the restaurant areas. The three building are set up in a U so the music echoes through all the rooms on the inside. They did not play to the crowd which for the most part where adults very few kids. None of the restaurants serve any drinks just beer or wine. As mention by others which I wish I had read before we made our arrangements is the four restaurants do not take reservations, and if you are not on line by 6:00 PM and at the front of the line you get handed a beeper with no guarantee of a sitting because the restaurants only serve from 6-9 PM. Each restaurant is small and only seats at best 50-75 people depending on which one you go to. The two that we got into with another couple, the food was UN eatable the four of pushed it away. Aruba was nice but stay at the Hyatt or the Marriott or any of the other nice Hotels in the area, and eat at the restaurants on the street there are many good ones. As a follow up, yesterday 4/19/2018 I went to the Doctor because I’m still not feeling right. He had a bunch of test done on me in the Hospital before I went to see him on my stomach and digestive system. They came back positive as of the results of a food bourn illness at the RIU; I’ll be on heavy Duty Anti- Biotic for 12 days. RIU Response: Dear Mr. S, We have received your claim regarding your stay at our Riu Palace Aruba hotel in Aruba. We thank your comments as it is always our customers’ feedback which helps us to improve the quality of the services we provide. We regret to learn that your stay with us did not completely fulfil your expectations. We particularly feel sorry to hear that some members of your party became ill during your stay and we hope you are fully recovered. We can assure you that our hotel adheres to the predetermined hygiene standards in food and beverage. At the same time, our hotel is strictly submitted to both internal and external regular check-ups and food analysis. Our clients’ health and well-being is of our utmost priority. You may agree that if your indisposition may have been caused by any bacteria present on food, with a high occupation rate and an all-inclusive buffet restaurants catering program we would have had many other gastric illness reports on the same dates. Nevertheless, there was no significant number of reports that week. Unfortunately, given the current lack of any medical notes received we cannot further investigate on the possible source of your ailment. Please understand that given these circumstances RIU Hotels & Resorts cannot be held liable for your unfortunate incident. We are very surprised to hear that the air-conditioning didn’t work as one would wish in room 6125. We understand that it must be very frustrating to have a noisy AC. Our maintenance staff is constantly checking the rooms, but nevertheless we are sure you will understand that some unreported issues can go unnoticed. Once commented to the Front Desk, our staff will do their best to fix it as soon as possible, but unfortunately fixing some issues can take more time than one would want. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Dear Mr. S, we can understand how this unfortunate event impacted your holidays and we want to apologize in the name of the hotel's manager and staff. In any case we have forwarded your complaint to the relevant areas' decision-makers and they will start follow-up actions where necessary. We would like to apologize for the inconvenience and wish that you will consider our brand for your future vacation. With warm regards, Francesca Pinder After Travel RIU Customer Service
