Fantastic Experience

We had a fantastic holiday at the Riu Palace in Aruba this summer. The hotel facilities were excellent, especially the restaurants and the spa. The pool is huge with no deep end, so is ideal for the kids without feeling crowded for the adults. The rooms were kept spotlessly clean, and the staff were very friendly indeed. We did a number of tours, including the natural pool and the submarine around the reefs and wrecks. These were pretty pricey, but still worthwhile. We hired a car to get around, and while the people were very friendly wherever we went, there isn't that much to see. That said, the beach front location and the hotel facilities were great. The only thing I would say is that the palapas on the beach get reserved stupidly early, around 5am, which the hotel could do more to control.

We had a fantastic week there. Beautiful resort with fantastic staff. Our room was on the 10th floor overlooking the pool and it was gorgeous. All the bartenders, housekeepers, restaurant staff were outstanding. We only ate in one of the ala carte restaurants one night because the buffet is so amazing both in variety and quality of food. Only possible negatives were that in order to get a chair with an umbrella by the pool you had to go down by 7:00 AM to put your stuff on it to reserve it. Also, because of hurricane Irma our flights home had to be rebooked so we had to stay an extra day. When we inquired about this at the front desk, they were not helpful at all. We ended up going to their sister hotel next door and they helped us keep our room an extra night. During our stay here there were a lot of people with really small children (infants) here which seemed kind of crazy to travel to a place like this with such small children. If this is not your thing, I would stay at the Riu next door which is only adults. All in all a great stay with wonderful, attentive staff.

Just returned from a fabulous 2 weeks in Aruba staying in the Riu Palace This was our first visit to the the island of Aruba which is known as One Happy Island and hope to return again. The weather was hot, hot, hot 24/7 but what keeps you quite cool is the wind. The locals are a lovely bunch of people and so polite and helpful. The Riu is a fantastic looking building from any view you wish to look at it and the lobby is impressive and stylish. We went with friends to Aruba as it was a bit of a double celebration. My friends were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary and it was my husband's 50th birthday. When we arrived we were greeted with a drink and check in went really quick. Only issue was my friends and I were booked on the sixth floor and I had emailed the hotel before travelling to let them know that a low rise room would be needed. After a wait of about one and half hours we were both given low rise rooms over looking the pool with big balconies. The restaurants were good but we stuck to the Buffet restaurant as it catered for everyone. We did visit the steakhouse restaurant once but sad to say was not impressed. We didnt visit the Krystal restaurant as big boy trousers were required for evening meals. We found the staff at the restaurant kind, caring and really helpful and didnt seem to be bothered whether you tipped or not. If you wanted to tip though, tips are welcome. The rooms were kept clean and beds were made every day, clean towels were left every day and house keeping knocked every day to see if you needed any thing. When you first checked in you are given a towel card which you give to the lady in the towel hut beside the pool, she hands over clean towels which you use for the beach or the pool. Every night you exchange your dirty towels for clean ones for the next day. Please however remember to buy towel clips as the wind can definitely pick up a bit and you don't want to be chasing your towel down the beach.. The beaches are fantastic but if you require a canopy, please be prepared to get up early as they go really quick. We were very lucky as our friends were up early every morning. Canopy number 42 is one of the biggest. The beaches also offer all kinds of water sports. There is a place just as you come out of the Riu on your left. If you take your passport you can hire equipment for free. Shopping was ok. If you wanted high end stores then your best bet would be to jump in a taxi and go to Oranjestad. Be careful what days you go, as the cruise ships stop off then. If you come out the Riu and turn left there are some shops and stalls there. I would advise going after 5.30 as everything would then be open. Jump in a taxi and asked to be dropped at the cinema, will cost $6. Then maybe take a nice walk back. Our overall stay was fantastic but a bit of a sore point was on the last day. We checked out only to find that our flight had been delayed by 3and a half hours. So instead of a 4oclock pick up we were picked up at 7.30 after checking out at 12oclock. Late check outs however weren't given to anyone. They do say that you have to ask on the day, but don't hold out for one, these late checks don't seem to happen. Whilst waiting to be picked up, there was an older couple that had missed their connecting flight so were quite worried to say the least. Reception however didnt seem that concerned. Would not let us make a international call to sort out the couple's flight. Said that the call would be expensive and if it was made we would need to pay for it and made a comment how for the 3 and a half hours delay we were lucky because they were still allowing us use of the hotels facilities. Even though the last couple of hours were a bit crabby, we enjoyed our experience in Aruba and made some great memories. Here's to our next visit and to seeing all around the island.

Beware Room 1119 and awful customer service.

Everything about the Riu Palace was wonderful... except for the service. We arrived on Sept 7, 2017. We were told our bags will be brought up to our room right away. Our bags sat unattended at the front door for more than 3 hours (despite calling two times to ask when they'll be delivered to the room). We finally ended up going down to get them ourselves. We checked in and were told we were given a "free upgrade". Room 1119 on the 11th floor. They just forgot to let us know that the elevators only go to the 10th floor. In order to get to room 1119, you have to take the elevator to floor 10, walk down a long corridor, go up 3 flights of stairs, and find room 1119 next to a mattress closet. No wonder no one wanted to bring up our bags. The room itself was beautiful and the view was amazing. The AC was not on, so we turned it on and went to dinner. Returned from dinner 2 hrs later to find the AC still didn't come on. Called the front desk, "we'll send someone right away to fix". 45 min later a housekeeper arrives and her solution to fixing the AC was to "keep the doors shut and curtains closed". 2 more hours go by. Still no AC. We made SIX phone calls over the course of 2 days to the front desk. Every single time we were told "Sending someone right away to fix". NO ONE ever showed up to fix it. Over the course of our first 2 days we made 3 trips to the front desk, and a total of EIGHT phone calls. Our room was hotter than the outside. End of Day 2 we demanded a new room and were finally given one. The fact that the AC didn't work wasn't a huge deal for me. Had it not been 98 degrees with 90% humidity, I most likely could've survived without it. What was really upsetting is the fact that it took eight phone calls and three trips to the desk and no one seemed to care. I had a headache the first two days due to the heat and not being able to cool down. I didn't sleep well at all. It put a damper on our stay. The pool. We spent a lot of time here, considering we had no one where else to cool off. Pool was fantastic, service was great, drinks were great, very clean, no complaints. The food was good. The views were great. The beach was immaculate. Will absolutely return to Aruba again, but it will not be to stay at the Riu Palace.

DISSAPOINTING

Riu Palace looks impressive, but the staff especially the reception lets this down, you get every thing you expect from this chain of hotels, but it seems that thing are not right here, everything is too much trouble.
