If this is what all the RIU's are like, I will not ever stay at one again.

The hotel was a joke and the service was very laidback. In a restaurant (sir Richard's) we were told that they did have coffee but were not able to serve it. The selections on the buffet were cold and not very appetizing. The pool bar was good. They seem to enjoy their jobs. The housekeeping staff was just ok. When they serviced our room, they left no wash clothes or bath mat. We had to request it and it took time to arrive. The room we had was ok but when you went out on the balcony to sit, you could not see anything because of the solid wall. If it were not for the fact that our nephew was getting married there, we would have immediately left. We also found that an all inclusive allows drunkin people to be the normal. Even if someone has obviously had sufficient liquor, the staff will not stop giving them drinks. Also, the smoking of weed was continual on the premises. It was so sickening sweet that my wife felt ill. Having honeymooned in Jamaica 47 years ago, I found the island and its people have changed dramatically. They have no pride in anything they do or have. It is obvious by the trash on the roadways as well as the upkeep of the hotel property. The gardens were beautiful but the tile on the floors in the common areas needed a major overhaul as well as in the rooms. The elevators were of grave concern each time we entered. They were dark and musty. They gave us a feeling of concern when it would go to a floor we never pressed (no one was there to enter) then back to our floor.

We had an amazing week in Jamaica. The hotel staff was super friendly and accommodating. The food was average at the buffets. The beach was small but beautiful. The thing we will look for next year is better food and a better night life. Entertainment stopped at 10ish and they had a disco which was a bust. We did go out in Ocho Rios twice but would rather have stayed at the resort and party. Neil was a great help and we have already talked about our next trip!

Our Second Time Back to Riu Ocho Rios
HOPE L.
Feb 13 2018
This was our second trip to the Riu Ocho Rios. A few disturbing things on this tripwire the check-in and our room. Check-in, which is supposed to be at 3:00PM was not available to us until 5:30PM. We arrived at the hotel at 2:30 and were hungry since we departed Pittsburgh at 5:15 in the morning, so we welcomed the idea of lunch prior to check-in since our room was not ready. (We had two rooms as my sister and brother-in-law joined us this year) After lunch we checked back and still no rooms. Finally at 5:30 we were told our rooms were ready. We grabbed our own luggage, as bell service is never provided at this hotel, and found our way to our rooms only to find that our room was almost ready and the other was just starting to be cleaned. We ended up putting all the luggage in our room and waiting yet another hour! Needless to say, we had a late dinner as well. We requested an oceanfront room as well. We could see the ocean when standing on the balcony, but is we sat in the wonderful chairs provided on the balcony you can't see anything but a cement wall - there were no railings to enjoy looking at the ocean. Very disappointing for both of our rooms! We are repeat customers and I have been traveling with Apple Vacations for 25 or more years. These are a few details I would have hoped would be priority. The food at the hotel is plentiful and amazing. We enjoyed the friendly staff and the cleanliness of the hotel. The show are redundant and get old quickly. Not even much change from last years line up, though the entertainers work very hard and are good. The weather in Jamaica has been rainy I guess for a month or so and we definitely have no control over that, but having a balcony to sit on with an oceanfront view, which is what we paid for, would have been preferred.

The hotel was average, we did not have hot water for a day and jets in tub did not work. The cable tv was out for a day. We prefer hotels in Montego Bay because they are closer to airport. Staff was ok.

Room was still dirty; bed had sand in it from previous guests. Food was good but it seemed the staff for room service and at the restaurant was not very user friendly and were irritated when we requested something. We couldn't get them to clear tables for us to sit and enjoy our meals. When asked to have our mini bar stocked, they refused although we had been there for 4 nights already and it was only partially stocked upon arrival and was never restocked. The pool bar staff was amazing!! The staff at the hotel bars inside were rude, they refused to acknowlege me and when they did, they gave me N/A drinks. I had to have other members of our party get drinks for me. Beach was dirty-trash all over it and cups from the patrons were just laying around-I realize that the other guests could have taken a little more responsibility for their trash as the staff seemed to be short. We did hear from a few members of the team about their pay so am assuming that could be part of the reason the customer service was down.

We went to the Riu in Ochos Rios in 2005 when it opened and it was amazing. Everything is pretty much exactly the same except the hotel shows it's age due to poor upkeep. The food is also not nearly as good as it used to be. The main pool area was in a state of disrepair with the area around the pool perimeter literally in crumbles. Both pools has the water levels lowered to make repairs and none of the jets on the hot tubs worked....

I stayed at the RIU Ocho Rios and it was a good trip for my golden 22nd birthday. There were 9 of us 3 to a room the stay was good but the only issue is that we all paid full price and they only gave WIFI Access too two people in the room which really was the down fall of the entire trip as we depend on the wifi. We had to pay an additional $30 which should have been outlined by Apple Vacations when we booked the reservation. Overall the trip was good. There are drivers present 24 hours a day which was good. There was lots of night life and plenty of food/drinks.

I have nothing but positive things to say about my overall experience. From the time we arrived until the time we left everyone was so friendly and accommodating. The resort was clean and the view was absolutely beautiful! The food at every restaurant was delicious, especially the Chinese place where we ate 3 different times.

Reverberations in a beach paradise

As an older couple, we planned on being live-in vacationers most of the time. Service and overall food quality were excellent, but the echos in hallways on into the early a.m. hours meant that the comfort level was not what if might have been. We had a great field trip with Sebert, our guide, to a working plantation, and for a younger, more noise tolerant clientele, this trip to Ocho Rios might indeed be just what these folks are looking for.

This is the second time we have stayed at the Riu. Beautiful resort, great service and very hard working staff, always with a smile on their faces. The resort and gardens is well-maintained. Only downside was that we grew tired of the food after 5 days. Menu didn't change much. Breakfast was my favourite meal of the day..so many choices and delicious. The Blue Mountain coffee that was served was amazing. We will return to the Riu again and I highly recommend it.

Not the stay I expected..

I’ll start with the positives. I travel at least once a year to an all inclusive resort in Jamaica. I have recently started trying to go outside my comfort zone and visit other hotels that I have heard good things about. The positives for this hotel were the WiFi, the beach and the food. The WiFi was very strong throughout the hotel and despite it cutting off on me before I even checked out, the strength still warrants a positive review. Of course my parents weren’t a fan of this because it led to being on my phone more often, but to a millennial, this is definitely a plus. Also, the food here was probably the best food I’ve had at a Jamaican all inclusive resort. My favorite places were St. Ann, Sir John and the Jerk Hut on the beach. The beach was very clean and nice. It also had plenty of chairs, so it was a relief to not have to search for chairs each time. On to the negatives.. From check in to check out, we had issues. The hotel has their booking company in Mexico so there were all sorts of complications with our reservations and checking in. When we finally got to our rooms, we were disappointed. My brother’s room smelled damp and moldy and he had to transfer to another room the next day. There was no customer service in this transfer as they were initially trying to charge him for a different room and left them without anywhere to keep their luggage for 3 hours. I felt like I had checked into a regular hotel in the states and not the 4 star Riu that everyone raves about. This hotel needs some serious remodeling. The rooms, elevators, pool, beach chairs and just the overall hotel itself. As far as the rooms, the beds are sunken in, the tubs are cracked, the toilets stained and the TVs are outdated. I’m surprised the full sized bed I slept on didn’t give out because one of the wooden feet holding the bed up was broken. I’ve never seen brown rags and towels by the way. That was interesting, but it wouldn’t have bothered me much if I didn’t feel like they could’ve used some TLC (aka softener). Try getting sunburnt and using a rough rag to shower- ouch! The elevators are janky and one was broken for most of our stay. This was a huge inconvenience for my 2 grandmothers who couldn’t manage the stairs. There’s also absolutely no ventilation inside either. The pool consistently had pieces of trees and other trash in it with not a skimmer in sight. The pool was just filthy overall especially toward the afternoon including the tiles that lined the pool. One of the jacuzzis in the pool stopped working about halfway through the stay and despite multiple notifications, it was never fixed. Although there were plenty of chairs on the beach, some of the beach chairs need to be retired unless you prefer to sit down on a chair only to realize you’re actually touching the sand. Lastly, our bus was scheduled to be at the hotel at 10am. I called the bellhop well in advance to get our luggage. When I was notified that I would have to be in the room, I asked the staff if I needed to go back upstairs until he got there to which they replied “no, it’s okay.” I stayed in the lobby for an hour and every 15 minutes double checked on where our luggage was. They finally told me they only had ONE bellboy for the whole property! At 9:40 I went up to the desk and volunteered to get the luggage myself and it was only then that they made a noticeable effort to get him to get our luggage before the bus got there. He was able to get the luggage into the lobby at exactly 10am- talk about anxiety! I’m big on customer service and the staff here was not very friendly. I’m an avid traveler and Jamaica is my favorite destination place. I’ve heard such great things about the Riu, but I’ve had more pleasant experiences with staff at other hotels. I’ll read other reviews for other Riu resorts, but I unfortunately will probably not be returning.

Need updating

I have recently returned from staying at Riu Ocho Rios in Jamaica. I have also been to the same hotel in 2010 at which time the hotel was to standards. However, upon my return the hotel has not been updated even slightly. The people is a hit or miss. Some of kind and some are just plain rude, not willing to help or is annoyed if you ask a question. Some things I noticed more on this trip than my last was the sweltering oven like elevators at the hotel. There is no ventilation, air duct or air conditioning in the elevators here. This is very dangerous, should the elevator stop working while occupied, everyone in the elevator would surely pass out from heat exhaustion or suffocation. Management and stockholders may way to address this situation. The food such as raw meats and vegetables are not on ice or in a cold container in hot temperatures when brought out to prepare for meals during lunch or dinner. This will cause food poisoning and other illnesses. The beach at the resort when during my first visit was beautiful and clean. Last week the beach was not clean, filled of seaweed and pieces of branches from the trees. I do recall from my first visit to the Riu Ocho Rios, the beach was cleaned every morning to eliminate debris.

I went with a group of 33 family and friends (twice). This resort is an all-inclusive that delivered everything just as described. They even exceeded my expectations. I'm planning a trip back there as soon as possible. Staff - Awesome and always willing to assist. Room - Clean, modern, well kept and stocked daily Activities - ALWAYS something fun to do for all ages and interests. Resort - Beautiful, well-maintained Weather - Hot, Hot, Hot! but we dressed for the beaches. Otherwise, rooms and other indoor areas were comfortably cooled.

Hi all, I've read some really negative reviews on this hotel and after spending two amazing weeks at the Riu in Ochi, I have a very different story to tell! Food: There is always great variety. The jerk hut is simply delicious and for my friend and I, portion size was fab, if not too much. Breakfast caters for everyone, sweet tooth, fry up lovers and those who want a JA breakfast. Entertainment: The team are sooooo friendly. Big shout out to Brains, Shene, Jerry, Sheldon, Kelly, Boom-Boom and Sparkles! These guys are great! So fun and actually make you feel happy inside. Brains is a particularly fabulous dancer, if you watch him and don't feel happy, you should get checked out... Wednesday's pool party is littt, an hour of pure fun! You have to experience it to believe me! Similarly, the Friday beach party is a great night, I'm sad just thinking about not being there! Rooms: We spent the first week in the blue band section, the room was nice and cleaned regularly. Due to an unavoidable situation, we were moved to the deluxe wing and there was a clear difference. The rooms were painted white, giving the room a fresh and clean feeling. The TV remote still didn't work, but we never asked at reception and who actually sits in the room to watch TV on holiday?! Off Resort: To all the people who say "don't go off resort, it's dangerous", they're wrong. This ideology that JA is dangerous needs to be reformed. My friend and I are two females in our 20's and we went out most nights to real bashment raves and parties. We met some great people in our hotel from the UK and this just made going out cheaper and more fun. If you get a reliable taxi man, GG or Kevin, you pay them say $10/15 and they'll take you to the party, wait for you to finish, then safely drop you back at the hotel. As my best friend knows, my favourite place in Ochi was Amnesia, An example of how untrue this dangerous connotation is, a girl dropped her new iPhone and a gentleman instantly picked it up and handed it to me to give back to her. In addition, our room card ended up on the floor and someone rushed to notify us we'd dropped it. Other great nights out include, Margaritaville, Shades (haha, I won't delve into this, but visit on a Tue/Fri) and local's events such as Happy Thursday! Please bare in mind, some nights are better at certain places, not everyday Margaritaville etc. Overall, this was a great holiday and a birthday to remember! Thank you Riu and thanks to the kind people of Ocho Rios for letting us visit your Parish!
