If this is what all the RIU's are like, I will not ever stay at one again.

The hotel was a joke and the service was very laidback. In a restaurant (sir Richard's) we were told that they did have coffee but were not able to serve it. The selections on the buffet were cold and not very appetizing. The pool bar was good. They seem to enjoy their jobs. The housekeeping staff was just ok. When they serviced our room, they left no wash clothes or bath mat. We had to request it and it took time to arrive. The room we had was ok but when you went out on the balcony to sit, you could not see anything because of the solid wall. If it were not for the fact that our nephew was getting married there, we would have immediately left. We also found that an all inclusive allows drunkin people to be the normal. Even if someone has obviously had sufficient liquor, the staff will not stop giving them drinks. Also, the smoking of weed was continual on the premises. It was so sickening sweet that my wife felt ill. Having honeymooned in Jamaica 47 years ago, I found the island and its people have changed dramatically. They have no pride in anything they do or have. It is obvious by the trash on the roadways as well as the upkeep of the hotel property. The gardens were beautiful but the tile on the floors in the common areas needed a major overhaul as well as in the rooms. The elevators were of grave concern each time we entered. They were dark and musty. They gave us a feeling of concern when it would go to a floor we never pressed (no one was there to enter) then back to our floor.

Hotel was great for couples and families. Many things to do around hotel. The food was very good and there was always a good variety of choices. Our room was always cleaned well and we enjoyed our stay. I would recommend this hotel.

We had an amazing week in Jamaica. The hotel staff was super friendly and accommodating. The food was average at the buffets. The beach was small but beautiful. The thing we will look for next year is better food and a better night life. Entertainment stopped at 10ish and they had a disco which was a bust. We did go out in Ocho Rios twice but would rather have stayed at the resort and party. Neil was a great help and we have already talked about our next trip!

Our Second Time Back to Riu Ocho Rios

Feb 13 2018
This was our second trip to the Riu Ocho Rios. A few disturbing things on this tripwire the check-in and our room. Check-in, which is supposed to be at 3:00PM was not available to us until 5:30PM. We arrived at the hotel at 2:30 and were hungry since we departed Pittsburgh at 5:15 in the morning, so we welcomed the idea of lunch prior to check-in since our room was not ready. (We had two rooms as my sister and brother-in-law joined us this year) After lunch we checked back and still no rooms. Finally at 5:30 we were told our rooms were ready. We grabbed our own luggage, as bell service is never provided at this hotel, and found our way to our rooms only to find that our room was almost ready and the other was just starting to be cleaned. We ended up putting all the luggage in our room and waiting yet another hour! Needless to say, we had a late dinner as well. We requested an oceanfront room as well. We could see the ocean when standing on the balcony, but is we sat in the wonderful chairs provided on the balcony you can't see anything but a cement wall - there were no railings to enjoy looking at the ocean. Very disappointing for both of our rooms! We are repeat customers and I have been traveling with Apple Vacations for 25 or more years. These are a few details I would have hoped would be priority. The food at the hotel is plentiful and amazing. We enjoyed the friendly staff and the cleanliness of the hotel. The show are redundant and get old quickly. Not even much change from last years line up, though the entertainers work very hard and are good. The weather in Jamaica has been rainy I guess for a month or so and we definitely have no control over that, but having a balcony to sit on with an oceanfront view, which is what we paid for, would have been preferred.

The hotel was average, we did not have hot water for a day and jets in tub did not work. The cable tv was out for a day. We prefer hotels in Montego Bay because they are closer to airport. Staff was ok.

Room was still dirty; bed had sand in it from previous guests. Food was good but it seemed the staff for room service and at the restaurant was not very user friendly and were irritated when we requested something. We couldn't get them to clear tables for us to sit and enjoy our meals. When asked to have our mini bar stocked, they refused although we had been there for 4 nights already and it was only partially stocked upon arrival and was never restocked. The pool bar staff was amazing!! The staff at the hotel bars inside were rude, they refused to acknowlege me and when they did, they gave me N/A drinks. I had to have other members of our party get drinks for me. Beach was dirty-trash all over it and cups from the patrons were just laying around-I realize that the other guests could have taken a little more responsibility for their trash as the staff seemed to be short. We did hear from a few members of the team about their pay so am assuming that could be part of the reason the customer service was down.

We went to the Riu in Ochos Rios in 2005 when it opened and it was amazing. Everything is pretty much exactly the same except the hotel shows it's age due to poor upkeep. The food is also not nearly as good as it used to be. The main pool area was in a state of disrepair with the area around the pool perimeter literally in crumbles. Both pools has the water levels lowered to make repairs and none of the jets on the hot tubs worked....

I stayed at the RIU Ocho Rios and it was a good trip for my golden 22nd birthday. There were 9 of us 3 to a room the stay was good but the only issue is that we all paid full price and they only gave WIFI Access too two people in the room which really was the down fall of the entire trip as we depend on the wifi. We had to pay an additional $30 which should have been outlined by Apple Vacations when we booked the reservation. Overall the trip was good. There are drivers present 24 hours a day which was good. There was lots of night life and plenty of food/drinks.

I have nothing but positive things to say about my overall experience. From the time we arrived until the time we left everyone was so friendly and accommodating. The resort was clean and the view was absolutely beautiful! The food at every restaurant was delicious, especially the Chinese place where we ate 3 different times.

The hotel premises were not clean enough. Pool was cleaned once during our stay. The main buffet was not open during lunch, and other restaurants didn't have enough space and food variety.

As an older couple, we planned on being live-in vacationers most of the time. Service and overall food quality were excellent, but the echos in hallways on into the early a.m. hours meant that the comfort level was not what if might have been. We had a great field trip with Sebert, our guide, to a working plantation, and for a younger, more noise tolerant clientele, this trip to Ocho Rios might indeed be just what these folks are looking for.

To start, I couldn’t get into my room until 3pm after arriving at the around 1:15pm so I had to leave my bags up by the desk while my room was being prepared. I go up to the room after 3:00 and my room still wasn’t ready. They tried to offer me another room but I wanted what I paid for so I decided to wait an additional 30-35 mins for my room. When I finally got my room (about an hour later) it was like I stepped into a time machine! The rooms are very dated and in need of serious changes. The staff was very rude and difficult to deal with at times also. Towels were a major isssue also!they have a person come collect the towels but you don’t get new ones for hours and calls to the desk about the issue went unsolved throughout the whole trip. The food just ok and if you’re thinking the liquor is gonna be top shelf get that thought out of your head! They serve strictly rail liquors. Overall I would say if you don’t want a bad view of Jamaica, don’t go to this resort! Spend your money somewhere else!

The bad reviews are true. If you don’t want to look at drapes from 1991 in your room or you’re going to complain about an old school tv, you should definitely stay else where. Both rooms we stayed in smelled musty. I say both rooms because we booked a room with 2 beds but were given a room with one King. No problem. We had to deal with one bed for one night and the next night they moved us to a room with 2 beds. Not like it made much of a difference, seeing as the beds are about 1 inch apart. We stayed on the ocean view side, #2200s. The balcony was beautiful and we loved hanging out on it. The A/C worked well and we were happy. The towel situation is odd. The towels are old. They’re like the old towels you have at home to clean the floor with. Whatever. They work. We were joking and said the hotel staff must be in a union. One person comes for your wash cloths, another person for your bath towels, another person to clean and who even knows how many other people to stock the fridge- which, by the way, is restocked every 2 days. You get ONE big bottle of water for 2 people, for 2 days. Our liquor bottles weren’t even totally filled to begin with. Get used to drinking soda and forget about ice. I went on an ice machine quest that I’m still not quite sure how I got back from. No clocks in the room. The phone doesn’t have any instructions or call buttons on it, so if you have to call the front, you have to dig through a folder for numbers. WiFi signal worked great throughout the hotel. I only had an issue when registering to use it. They email you a link, which you need WiFi to open and all of the instructions were in Spanish. No problem. It’s all about the experience. I figured it out. On the third day, we realized that our bathroom floor never dries. Low and behold, the tank on the toilet was leaking. No problem. We threw the one and only garbage can under the leak and lived with it. Luckily, the annoying sound of a dripping toilet was drowned out by the squealing elevator. You can seriously hear the elevator from the ocean. The people on here who complained about the loud music by the pool don’t know what they’re missing. Again, no problem. Just have some more warm rum. Once you get used to it, it’s really not that bad. The beach is gorgeous! We never had any problems getting chairs. The entertainment staff are the friendliest people there. They walked up to us every day and asked how we were doing. They really work hard and do a great job. The bartenders weren’t very personal. They’ll pour what you order. Tip or no tip, doesn’t even seem to matter. I still can’t figure out what the deal is with the “deluxe” side. We didn’t have gold bracelets but we still went up to the pool bar over there. Oh yeah, the pool. The main pool was crazy crowded and seemed dirty. I walked in to get a drink and walked right back out to go rinse off in the ocean. The food was great. The buffet has a million choices. I’m not a crazy food person but I thought they did a great job. The hotel grounds are beautiful. Everything seemed clean. I would stay here again. It definitely needs some updating. We mostly used the stairs because of the slow, screaming elevator but the stairs were very dark at night. A little sketchy. I’m glad we didn’t have any emergencies because I can see how that would be a production. All in all, no problems...just a few situations.

Not what I expected at all

We stayed at this hotel recently and it was by far the worst experience. The drinks were limited and watered down. The excursions are SUPER expensive with Amstar. We did the mud buggy excursion (or whatever you call it) and it was 100 dollars per person. They said that this price is a discount, but I think it was total bs. This excursion was not even 2 hours long. It was a total waste. If your looking to snorkel and climb the Dunn’s River Falls, I would suggest going out to the beach and booking with them out there. It was 60 per person and it was really fun. The staff keeps you entertained the entire time. The rooms are extremely dated and they’re in desperate need of an HGTV crew. The club had music but not one person in sight. The food was decent for the hotel. The pools close at 6pm and the kiddos take over the swim up bar lol. There were some positive parts as well..... The beach was nice The jerk chicken was great I left my phone on a van and Richard (front desk staff) went above and beyond to get it back from the drivers company. The Snorkel excursion was a lot of fun (book outside at the beach)

WHAT, No Reservation?

I arrived a day early for a family reunion in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. My sister and I was greeted by Ku Wayne. He greeted us with a big smile and a warm greeting. He gave us information about the resort that was most helpful. We had a nice room but found out why they did not want food taken back to the rooms. ( Roaches 2 spotted in our room) The authentic Jamaican food was better tasting to me than the other food served. Their was a lot of choices for food. Jerk chicken is served on the beach close to the pool. There is entertainment , bars, clubs and restaurants a good layout for people to enjoy. The trip took a turn in a bad way. We saw other family members who were checking in. In disbelief , they told us they had no reservation. We found out also that our reservation was cancelled. It was cancelled by a hotel employee. Now, we had to scramble around to find some place to stay because our one day early stay was booked separate from the family group rate. OH MY, HOMELESS IN JAMAICA. During this dilemma we met another very customer friendly service worker, Shadeen. She called around for us searching for rooms. She worked hard and helped us to find another hotel. If all of the customer service staff was like KuWayne and Shadeen, our reservations would not have been cancelled.

A Disappointment - Will never set foot at a RIU property, perhaps Jamaica

I was there for 5 days with a group of four adults, 3 senior, two teenagers all female. Two of the ladies were registered nurses which came in handy twice. 1) Medical attention - On our third day, guest a few doors down passed away. The man collapsed in his room, his young daughter in a panic ran out of the room to call for help and locked herself out of the room. When the hotel staff showed up, the key did not work. It baffles me because they access rooms daily to clean, they simply brought the wrong key. Staff would not break the door down they accessed room via my friend's balcony. It took 15min to enter the room. The hotel staff did not seem bothered that life was at risk or the screams of the young girl and family members. min to enter. It took another 20 minutes for emergency personnel to arrive. My two friends who happened to be RNs swung into action performing CPR on the unresponsive man. When they did they were not equipped to help. Upon arrival, they could not get the gurney into the elevator because they are too small and had to carry the man down the stairs and across the property. All in all, it was a complete nightmare. The poor man had a heart attack and died at the age of 52. I believe he could have had a chance had precious time not been lost. Worst of all, they did not seem to care. I will never return to an RIU resort and this has permanently tarnished my view of Jamaica. Service - Slow, from check-in - getting luggage to the room. Staff at the restaurant, bars, maids seemed miserable, I can count on one hand that smiled or were helpful 1a) On the fourth day a guest passed out at breakfast and my friend stepped in again to perform CPR. The guest was fine, just heat related but again hotel staff was indifferent and there was no urgency 2) What's with the towels? - Every morning the maid would show up just to collect washcloths and nothing else. A couple of times they showed up before we even had a chance to shower. When I asked the maid she said that they wash then return. Sometimes the towels did not show up until much late in the Why are they rationing towels? 3) Rooms - Spacious but dated. The TV was Zenith must circa the 90s. The grounds were lovely 4) Theft - My friend had a valuable watch stolen and the hotel has been unresponsive by email or phone
