Nice hotel for the price but...

This is the 6th RIU resort I’ve stayed in. A group of about 40 family and friends stayed for 6 days for my sisters Wedding Vow Renewal celebration. We stayed at both the deluxe side and my room was in the deluxe building. Check in was quick and easy and the front desk staff was friendly and welcoming. As we walked in the room we smelled mold and uncleanliness. The toilet even had a ring around it. I went back down to the front desk and my room was changed with no problem. The food was excellent. Both the buffet and specialty restaurants are great. The steak house restaurant and the Jerk hut are amazing but the late night snack bar is horrible. Stale popcorn and nachos no matter the time. The pizza restaurant is the last and only hope for late food and closes at 2 am so that means no food until breakfast. The night entertainment is great and the club plays pretty good music. My only problem with this hotel is the unfriendly staff that obviously need to be retrained. Too many unfriendly faces and attitudes everywhere but the front desk and sometimes the Jerk hut. This is the first time I’ve encountered this in the 6 RIU resorts I’ve stayed at. The staff is usually friendly and accommodating but this time they all seemed to not be pleased with something. I don’t think I would stay there again.

Wasted potential

Stayed at the Riu Ocho Rios the first full week of October 2018. The property is essentially in an isolated area, so don't expect to do any walking excursions outside of the resort, because there's nothing there. You can get a shuttle into town for outrageously priced shopping, but be prepared to pay a minimum of $35 for a shuttle to only drive 4 miles. The property is showing it's age, lots of touch up would go a long way. I paid extra to stay in the "Deluxe" wing of the hotel, but be advised if you do choose the RIU Ocho Rios there is nothing deluxe associated with paying extra, for all the activities, e.g. restaurants, bars, gift shop, etc. are located in the other wing, so you're simply throwing away money with deluxe. Speaking of which, I also paid extra for ocean front junior suite, which is indeed facing the Caribbean directly, problem is the very small balcony has a 4 foot solid wall instead railing, so you cannot see anything while you're sitting in the short legged beach chairs they have on your balcony. Speaking of the room, I had contacted the manager a week prior to arrival and was told we would be upgraded to a regular suite, but of course this did not happen. The bedding is extremely uncomfortable in the rooms. The restaurants were okay, just remember the specialty restaurants are not open every night, so if you're here make sure you look at the schedule in front of the restaurants if you want to eat there. The buffet is only open for breakfast and dinner, for lunch you only have a couple of choices, the pizza snack bar or the Plantation restaurant, of course there are hot dogs, nachos and sandwiches in the Sports Bar, but they didn't look very appealing. Finding coffee in the morning is a major ordeal, especially while staying in the Deluxe wing. No coffee makers in the room, the closest play for me was the Sports Bar, and their machine was out of service for most of our stay. Speaking of coffee, one would think being in Jamaica that Blue Mountain coffee would be what the hotel served, instead they have instant Nescafe machines, and the coffee is terrible! Very disappointed, because the last three times I've been to Jamaica each resort served Blue Mountain, but not the RIU. The drinks were not very good, most pre-made in gallon jugs, and extremely sweet but watery. The beer was never cold. Service at the bars was hit or miss, with either very friendly staff or extremely rude staff. As for staff, most were friendly and polite, but way too many were not and acted as if you were a burden to them. For me, with the money I paid to stay here, I expect at least of modicum of friendly service. The beach itself was decent, plenty of loungers available each day. There were quite a few spots of seaweed in the water, and it was rather rocky under the sand, but it was okay. The pools had plenty of loungers as well, with some in the sun and some under palapas. The pools weren't kept very clean though, it was quite disgusting getting in and out of the pool. The entertainment staff was pretty good, very friendly. Some of there shows were pretty corny, but they were entertaining. The best show we saw was a steel drum band not associated with the RIU, they were brought in, and this show was amazing! Have always stayed in Montego Bay before so wanted to give Ocho Rios a try, in hindsight this was a mistake primarily because I selected the RIU. The resort is isolated and in poor condition. Keep in mind there are better resort choices in Ocho Rios than the RIU if you want your vacation to be pleasant and enjoyable.

Nice price good service but she getting tired

Great time Lots and lots of food drink entertainment All you could wish for Only issue is hotel is showing signs of age and will need a serious refurb in the next couple of years.. lifts in particular are very tired. That said it’s an awesome family holiday and an Ok couples / older kids retreat. We only paid 700 each all in with flights room and all inclusive food drink.. amazing! Definitely recommended for a top notch budget holiday especially families Staff are really nice service is good and has improved lately Recommended

Absolutely loved it!

First time in Jamaica and staying in a Riu hotel. We just loved it. Although it is a little outdated, it is very clean and the grounds are beautifully maintained. We stayed in a deluxe junior suite and it is well worth the extra money. It was great to have the extra space with a couch and tv. Can't wait to return once they have renovated the hotel.

Amazing

I am presently here in a standard garden view room. I was worried coming out due to all the negative reviews. Don't Believe them. Food is fantastic, so much choice, decor could do with updating but is no means bad. Staff cannot do enough for you and are so friendly. Drinks are great, so much choice of cocktails and spirits that are delicious. Particularly love the pins colada and chocolate martinis. Buffet restaurant is nice I had leg of lamb, beef and jamacian curry last night. Other restaurants nice to. Easy to get a space on the beach or by the pool. Not worth upgrading to the delux side you can use their facilities and the gourmet restaurant is the same as on on the standard size. If you plan on sitting in your room then why come to jamaica? Entertainment has been good, have seen kareoke, reggae band and Africa show so far. 11 more days to go can't wait will up date my review.
