This was a great place to send 7 days. The food was excellent, the rooms were great and the staff was wonderful. The onstage entertainment and the entertainment activities in the pool were very fun and engaging. Both pools were excellent and completely different - one was best for relaxing, the other had the entertainment and activities. We did a few local excursions to Dunn's River Falls, The Blue Hole and the Luminous Lagoon - they were excellent as well, but it was somewhat difficult to get motivated to leave the property. Overall, the one thing I would do differently would be to stay longer. We'll be back!

The hotel was a joke and the service was very laidback. In a restaurant (sir Richard's) we were told that they did have coffee but were not able to serve it. The selections on the buffet were cold and not very appetizing. The pool bar was good. They seem to enjoy their jobs. The housekeeping staff was just ok. When they serviced our room, they left no wash clothes or bath mat. We had to request it and it took time to arrive. The room we had was ok but when you went out on the balcony to sit, you could not see anything because of the solid wall. If it were not for the fact that our nephew was getting married there, we would have immediately left. We also found that an all inclusive allows drunkin people to be the normal. Even if someone has obviously had sufficient liquor, the staff will not stop giving them drinks. Also, the smoking of weed was continual on the premises. It was so sickening sweet that my wife felt ill. Having honeymooned in Jamaica 47 years ago, I found the island and its people have changed dramatically. They have no pride in anything they do or have. It is obvious by the trash on the roadways as well as the upkeep of the hotel property. The gardens were beautiful but the tile on the floors in the common areas needed a major overhaul as well as in the rooms. The elevators were of grave concern each time we entered. They were dark and musty. They gave us a feeling of concern when it would go to a floor we never pressed (no one was there to enter) then back to our floor.

We had an amazing week in Jamaica. The hotel staff was super friendly and accommodating. The food was average at the buffets. The beach was small but beautiful. The thing we will look for next year is better food and a better night life. Entertainment stopped at 10ish and they had a disco which was a bust. We did go out in Ocho Rios twice but would rather have stayed at the resort and party. Neil was a great help and we have already talked about our next trip!

Our Second Time Back to Riu Ocho Rios
HOPE L.
Feb 13 2018
This was our second trip to the Riu Ocho Rios. A few disturbing things on this tripwire the check-in and our room. Check-in, which is supposed to be at 3:00PM was not available to us until 5:30PM. We arrived at the hotel at 2:30 and were hungry since we departed Pittsburgh at 5:15 in the morning, so we welcomed the idea of lunch prior to check-in since our room was not ready. (We had two rooms as my sister and brother-in-law joined us this year) After lunch we checked back and still no rooms. Finally at 5:30 we were told our rooms were ready. We grabbed our own luggage, as bell service is never provided at this hotel, and found our way to our rooms only to find that our room was almost ready and the other was just starting to be cleaned. We ended up putting all the luggage in our room and waiting yet another hour! Needless to say, we had a late dinner as well. We requested an oceanfront room as well. We could see the ocean when standing on the balcony, but is we sat in the wonderful chairs provided on the balcony you can't see anything but a cement wall - there were no railings to enjoy looking at the ocean. Very disappointing for both of our rooms! We are repeat customers and I have been traveling with Apple Vacations for 25 or more years. These are a few details I would have hoped would be priority. The food at the hotel is plentiful and amazing. We enjoyed the friendly staff and the cleanliness of the hotel. The show are redundant and get old quickly. Not even much change from last years line up, though the entertainers work very hard and are good. The weather in Jamaica has been rainy I guess for a month or so and we definitely have no control over that, but having a balcony to sit on with an oceanfront view, which is what we paid for, would have been preferred.

Room was still dirty; bed had sand in it from previous guests. Food was good but it seemed the staff for room service and at the restaurant was not very user friendly and were irritated when we requested something. We couldn't get them to clear tables for us to sit and enjoy our meals. When asked to have our mini bar stocked, they refused although we had been there for 4 nights already and it was only partially stocked upon arrival and was never restocked. The pool bar staff was amazing!! The staff at the hotel bars inside were rude, they refused to acknowlege me and when they did, they gave me N/A drinks. I had to have other members of our party get drinks for me. Beach was dirty-trash all over it and cups from the patrons were just laying around-I realize that the other guests could have taken a little more responsibility for their trash as the staff seemed to be short. We did hear from a few members of the team about their pay so am assuming that could be part of the reason the customer service was down.

We went to the Riu in Ochos Rios in 2005 when it opened and it was amazing. Everything is pretty much exactly the same except the hotel shows it's age due to poor upkeep. The food is also not nearly as good as it used to be. The main pool area was in a state of disrepair with the area around the pool perimeter literally in crumbles. Both pools has the water levels lowered to make repairs and none of the jets on the hot tubs worked....

I stayed at the RIU Ocho Rios and it was a good trip for my golden 22nd birthday. There were 9 of us 3 to a room the stay was good but the only issue is that we all paid full price and they only gave WIFI Access too two people in the room which really was the down fall of the entire trip as we depend on the wifi. We had to pay an additional $30 which should have been outlined by Apple Vacations when we booked the reservation. Overall the trip was good. There are drivers present 24 hours a day which was good. There was lots of night life and plenty of food/drinks.

The Riu was beautiful! Everything was extremely clean. The morning and evening food selection was remarkable! Lunch was the only negative about the resort. Our room was simple but clean. We were very pleased with our choice and got it at a great price.

Amazing food, nice hotel!

Had a great time at this all-inclusive resort. :) ROOM: We were two friends traveling together and got a room with two double beds. Our balcony faced a lawn/garden with a small pool/pond. I forget what room number we were now, but we were on the 3rd floor of the horseshoe-shaped building that is at the end of the row of restaurants. All rooms of that building are four digits and begin with a 3. We were in the 30's which means you are around to the side of the horseshoe (see my attached pic - the red square indicates the building we were in, and the yellow highlighting is the rooms I would avoid, if you don't like to do a lot of walking). To avoid a lot of walking, get a room that ends in 0 to 30, that way you'll be close to the elevator and stairs and restaurants. The room was nice, the bathroom had two separate sinks, and the counter and shower/tub surround were stone (marble or quartz, etc). The beds were very firm. You get a large double closet to hang clothes in, and a large dresser with 6 drawers, plus two night stands each having 2 drawers. A balcony large enough to sit out on, with a towel bar to dry clothes on. The room comes with a free safe, but you need to ask for a key for the safe at the front desk when you check in. We forgot to ask, and our check in person didn't offer either, so unfortunately that meant a trip back to the reception desk to get a key the next day. The room also comes with four kinds of alcohol (free/included) - our room had Appleton rum, Jamaican brandy, Smirnoff vodka, and a gin. The mini bar fridge has coke, club soda, beer (Red Stripe), etc for mixers or drinking on their own. It is replenished every 2nd day. You get large bottled water as well. FOOD: I personally found the food to be amazing. The buffets are very large and offer a ridiculous amount of choices. Fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, seafood, dairy, bread, pizza, pasta, rice, I can go on and on. There are tons of different counters and food stations. We tried the steakhouse, the Italian, and the Asian a la carte restaurants. I liked the Asian one, the sweet and sour chicken was amazing. It's still buffet style, it's not really "a la carte", but you had quite a bit of choices. The sushi was pretty good. I liked my meal at the steakhouse too. They do not make you do reservations there, you just line up and go in. A word of warning, the "gourmet" restaurant requires the men to wear long pants. Even nice, pleated shorts will not work. Long pants only. The jerk chicken on the beach is amazing, and daily had a long line (that moves very quickly). The buffets also have self-serve smoothies/juices, pop and water. SERVICE: I didn't find the servers here to be as friendly as I've had at resorts in Mexico, but, they were not un-friendly either. Just sort of neutral. You have to say hello to them and smile at them first, and then they will smile and greet you. But I found that they would not greet us. Generally everyone seems to be working pretty hard though. The maids and yard workers are always running about, working. The entertainment team, as with most all-inclusive resorts, work very long days, having to entertain pool-side all day and then again in the shows in the evenings. The staff at the reception desk were pleasant and courteous and helpful, and they will make change for you if you need it (for example all I had was USD in $20's, but I needed small bills for tipping - they made me change no problem). The servers at the restaurants are running around like crazy and working hard to sere you. Sometimes it can take a while for someone to bring you coffee in the morning, but otherwise we were served very well. BEACH: The beach is nice. White sand, soft, and a lot of it. There are reefs right there, that you can snorkel over, and see some cool stuff! We were only out there for half an hour and I saw a stingray, a golden spotted snake eel, a sea cucumber, urchins, etc. SCUBA: We went diving with the shop on-site (Scuba Caribe). They don't do night dives. :( The diving was quite good! We did a two-tank dive: The first dive was to a wreck and to a reef. The wreck was amazing, there's a ton of coral on it, and lots of fish to see. Saw a barracuda and some kind of sea caterpillar thing. A flounder. The reef was also amazing - a huge structure of wall-like coral with pass throughs, similar to what I've dove in Cozumel, so that impressed me, I didn't know Jamaica had corals like that!! The second dive was to a more flattened mound of coral, but still very good. Saw a moray eel, lots of parrot fish and red snapper here as you're in the Caribbean. Only complaint was that the boat ride was LOOOOONG. We went quite far away from the resort - about a half hour boat ride each way - I get sea sickness so this was not fun for me. But, you gotta go where the good corals are, and they were some very nice dives and worth the trip. It was around $100 USD for a two-tank dive. Which is about what I have paid in Cozumel too. SHOWS: I really liked the entertainment here. They have live bands near the bar/stage area every night during the dinner hours and time between dinner and the show. The shows had decent dancing and costumes and themes. Sunday nights they do some karaoke for a while, before the show. All in all, a nice place to stay and I'd return. :)

Ignore the negative reviews!! We had an amazing week at the Riu Ocho Rios Resort - I mean it was not perfect on everything (not even worth mentioning the couple things) but all-in-all, it was great! Our group of six had so much fun, enjoyed all the different drinks, and the food was pretty good (especially the jerk hut and Mamme Bay). Sir John's isn't worth the hype, and really wans't worth waiting the 2 1/2 hours we wasted there to eat the small portions of food. We would have much rather gone to one of the other places that was quicker so we could enjoy our evening watching the entertainment. We so enjoyed the entertainment staff, wow - the energy they all had from sun-up to sun-down, they were awesome!! Brains, Kelly, Birdman and the others really made our stay wonderful, all the resort staff were very welcoming and friendly. They recognized us and always took time to ask us how we were doing and put on fantastic shows each night. I believe they are starting some renovations in April 2019, and there are a few areas that could use just a little sprucing up - but it was paradise and we hope to be back!!!

5 star....I think not!!!!!! More like a 3 star.........at a push!!!

The hotel is massive and I think thats where the lack of service begins.....they cant possibly cater to everyone to a decent standard. We were in a group of 14, on arrival they managed to put my husband sharing a room with someone else in the group, even though we have the same surname and our names were next to each other on the list. It took us an age after a long journey from the UK, to get the rooms sorted. Then they put us in rooms spread out over the hotel.. Our rooms smelled of damp and when we complained, we were told that we need to leave the air con at all times. Everyone knows that if you stay in a room with the air con on it will make you sick. You have the fan on when you are in the room and leave the air con on when you are out....The problem is the housekeepers were turning the air con off in the rooms when they came in to clean and they wonder why the rooms were mouldy!! Our bed even had mould on the base that you could see if you lifted the side of the sheet.. The room towels were this beige/brown colour and some of them were obviously very old, as they werent particularly soft, were faded and also had holes in.. There was also mould in the bathroom on the ceiling above the shower and around the extractor (which didn't actually work). My friend found a pair of her shoes had gone mouldy in the wardrobe in the 2nd week. The ironing board was filthy so i put a towel over it to iron our clothes. I realised after i had used it that the bottom of the fabric under the ironing board was also full of mould, also the iron wouldn't stay plugged into the wall, it kept falling out and my friends found that in their rooms as well. One night when it rained and I had just gotten showered and ready to go out, I slipped and fell over on the way to dinner, as although the walkways leading to the rooms are covered, the sides are open so water easily gets in and sits on the floor. I had to go back and get changed as I was soaked.....I was only wearing rubber flip flops as well, so I have no idea what would have happened if i had been wearing high heels. The housekeepers would come to clean the room at 9am!!! when we were still getting ready to go to breakfast and would bang on the door like they were the police and not go away even if you said to them 'no thank you'. They would insist on you answering the door to change over the towels (even if you hadn't finished using them yet!) and want you sign some paperwork (my husband had that encounter, I think it was for their survey. The head of housekeeping had stopped me on my way to dinner the day before and asked me to mark them up as 'excellent' when the survey came round. Whenever we didn't let them in to clean the room when we were getting ready for breakfast, they never came back to clean the room later. (The hotel also only provided a small bars of soap and 2 washcloths, there was no shampoo, shower gel etc, no shower cap, cotton buds or any of the supplies you would expect in a 5 star hotel. No robes or slippers in your room, no tea or coffee making facilities. They had old TV's in the rooms (the ones that have a really large back that you have to keep away from the wall) and the choice of channels was poor. The food was not much to shout about and some of the staff were not very helpful and were sometimes quite rude. Also, we were given champagne in glasses (and the bottle) on our way to the adults pool, then we were TOLD OFF!! at the pool for having the bottle glasses...and we found that they werent strict on the fact that it was an adults pool...there were kids all over it even though the water was too deep some of the kids in there...4'4" is I think the depth of the pool...smaller kids were kept playing by the beds in the water by their parents, as that was the only place not too deep for them. I could go on, but I will just say that this was my 4th time in Jamaica, and next time i stay in Ochi I may go back to the hotel I have stayed at twice before - the Jewel Dunns River hotel (its actually next to the Riu) as it is smaller, much more attractive, staff are much more helpful, friendly and polite and you get much more for your money (food is excellent - proper good Jamaican food, amenities in the room - topped up every day, poolside service, room service, nice clean rooms etc), its adults only - its a great place to stay and its only a 4 star!!!!

The resort is nice but could use some fresh paint and updating. Everyone working there was very helpful and nice. We are not people that expect the best so if you go to Ocho Rios and you want top quality and the best, than you should find a different resort to stay at.
