My Third Visit to ORP
ChicoBlanco, Detroit, Michigan
Thu Jan 18 10:05:55 EST 2018
One would assume that my returning to ORP after two visits would indicate that I am a happy guest at this resort...and one would be correct. My first visit was in January of 2017 just three weeks after the grand opening. I rated the resort four stars at that time as there were still some minor issues that needed addressing. Upon my return in March of 2017 I found most if not all of those issues were corrected and I raised my rating to five stars. This review is somewhat lengthy but accurate and explicit. It will share my experiences...especially concerning the staff. The people I have met at ORP are no longer "employees" to me. They are my family at my home away from home. As with my previous visits I stayed as a Privilege Guest. I cannot be more emphatic: the price to upgrade to Privilege status is WORTH EVERY PENNY. The service you will enjoy is phenomenal. Upon arrival, my two friends (both previous visitors) and I arrived at the Privilege office to check in. As a Privilege guest you check in there as opposed to the front desk and receive personalized service. We were greeted by Carolina and Mandy and offered refreshments. We spent perhaps 15 minutes checking in and were introduced to one of our mayordormos (butlers), Victor. Victor loaded our luggage on to his carrito (a large covered golf cart) and drove us to our rooms. Upon escorting me to my room Victor gave me his cell number and email address, telling me to contact him at any time if I needed anything. Who does that? Victor does. He's the best. I stayed in a master suite in the Eden building with an ocean view. All master suites are Privilege suites. There is a full size living room with a half bath, dining area and balcony as well as a full size bedroom with a large bathroom, sitting area and balcony. For fine dining, you will enjoy the Privilege Lounge on the fourth floor of the Privilege building. Once inside the lounge, near the entrance is the Privilege desk which was staffed by Abril, Veronica and Paula. These ladies are very friendly, courteous and professional. They are there for the sole purpose of helping Privilege guests with just about anything. They helped us with dinner reservations, items delivered to our rooms, our mini bars being restocked to our personal specifications, laundry service and printing our boarding passes on our last day. This was the first time I met Paula, Abril and Veronica but I felt like I had known them forever. They are truly wonderful. The PL is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There you will be greeted by Samantha, the delightful hostess who makes you feel welcome. You will also meet Jose, Vernancio and Jesus, all of whom provide excellent service and happily provide any special attention you might require for your meal. They are truly professionals. Above the PL on the roof is the Chill out Bar, an open air roof top bar and lounge with spectacular views of the ocean including cruise ships arriving and departing Cozumel, an island just off the coast. There we met Javier and Manuel, two of the best bartenders anywhere. They were always right there when we needed them and gave excellent service. Two great guys. One rainy evening while leaving the PL we ran into Ariz, whom I had met during my last visit. Ariz is one of the Privilege mayordormos and recognized me immediately. She was with Paula and insisted that we allow them to arrange for a covered carrito to take us to our dinner destination, La Locanda. Five minutes later we were all enjoying a comfortable and dry ride in the middle of a rain storm. Throughout our visit both Ariz and Paula would check on us just to make sure we had everything we needed. Imagine for a moment, returning to a resort a year later and being greeted as family. That's what Ariz did for me. And now, I have new friends there as well. La Locanda offers Italian cuisine. The night time manager is Ricardo, who is a detail oriented, friendly and a capable professional who always made sure we had everything we needed. The Chef there also happens to be named Ricardo and he always came to our table to solicit any special requests. How's that for service? Our waiter both times was Juan. Juan is GREAT! One evening while enjoying the Penne con Pesto y Pollo (which we all highly recommend) we ordered a second bottle of wine. After discovering that there was only one bottle in the restaurant (the one we had just consumed) Juan sent somebody to the PL to retrieve another bottle for us. Now that's service! Speaking of wine I ran into my friend Edgar, the sommelier, who I had met last year. Edgar has always helped us make an appropriate wine selection based on pairing it with the food. There is a small charge for wines on the wine list but they are well worth the extra cost. Edgar also invited us to his wine tasting event which was educational and fun. We had a private room for ten people with various meats and cheeses and some fruit. Curiously, Edgar seemed to show up wherever we were dining during most evenings just to say hello and make sure we were happy. Hmmm. Edgar is a great friend and a talented sommelier. Are you beginning to understand why I feel so much at home at ORP? Route 66 is the destination for classic American BBQ. It is a casual, diner themed restaurant with a complete selection of every type of BBQ you could possibly want. There we were greeted by my friend Reyna. I met Reyna last year when she was hostess at the PL (the staff is regularly rotated) and she has always greeted me with a smile and a kind word. She's a wonderful lady and I was elated to see her again. Reyna arranged for us to eat in a private dining room where we had dined last year. More about Reyna later... Our waiter at Route 66 was Luciano provided superb service. We all had the ribs and the food was great. But Luciano's service...was better than great. It was FANTASTIC! Luciano made sure we had everything we needed. Muchas gracias Luciano! La Margarita is the place for Mexican food. The food is somewhat upscale from Tex Mex and is delicious. Lorena was our server and once again her service was fabulous. Even though the restaurant was very busy, Lorena stopped by our table several times to make sure everything was right...and it was. Oh, and Edgar stopped by that night to check in on us as well. That night, Roberto, a food and beverage manager also stooped by to say hello. Roberto and I met last year when he would greet me every time he saw me and ask if there was anything I needed. Please understand that it's not Roberto's job to assist guests but he did for me and and I was happy to see him again. He stopped by one night at La Locanda as well. How's that for a nice touch? Before I forget...I need to mention another new friend I made there. We spent every day at the Privilege pool and every day our preferred three chairs, adorned with towels, were ready for us. Carlos was the person responsible for these kind gestures. Not only did Carlos provide our preferred chairs everyday but he always asked us if we needed anything. He even made arrangements to have have us taken care of on his day off. Please take a moment to introduce yourself to Carlos at the Privilege pool. You will be happy you did. Our preferred lunch destination was Pez Vela, a buffet located right on the beach. There we were met by Leticia who always had a smile and warm greeting for us. Pez Vela is casual and the food is always fresh and good. Imagine how I felt when Hayde, one of the servers I met last year, approached to greet me. Hayde was always there to provide me with Diet Pepsis everyday at lunch and she was genuinely happy to see me. As if by magic...the other servers, Onelia, Rosa, Margarita and Bernardo all were anxious to meet us and take care of us as well...every day. Hmmm. One can't help but wonder if Hayde had something to do with that but in any event, all of these people were very friendly and there for us whenever we needed something. The Steakhouse is the place to go for...STEAKS! As I opined in my last review the steaks are large but a thinner cut. Nonetheless, we all ordered the rib eye, medium rare, and they were all done to perfection and delicious. Our server was Jaime and he was GREAT! We all ordered sauteed mushrooms with our rib eyes and about three minutes after taking our orders, Jaime returned to ask me if we wanted regular or portabello mushrooms. How's that for service? Jaime made sure everything was exactly to our specifications and taste. We ordered a bottle of cab from the wine list which arrived in the capable hands of Jesus, the dining room manager. Jesus presented, opened and served the wine with noticeable expertise and definitely made an impression on all of us. Don't get me wrong; the food was great...but somehow Jaime and Jesus made it even better. I might add that there is frequently a line at the Steakhouse but if you are a Privilege guest you simply go to the manager next to the hostess stand and ask for your table. Nice touch. One evening we arrived at Sakura, the Japanese steakhouse and were greeted by Roberto, the manager. We requested three seats at the bar in the rear but were informed that a large party of ten had already reserved the entire bar. I could sense that Roberto was disappointed that he could not accommodate us but I certainly understood that he had to honor the reservation. After all, fair is fair. No problem. We walked to Armanto, the large buffet located near the front of the resort. And who was there to greet us? Reyna, my favorite hostess! Reyna escorted us to our table and specifically asked me if there was anything she could do to help me. When I explained what had just occurred at Sakura and asked if she could arrange a reservation for us the following evening. When I responded in the affirmative she promptly excused herself. Reyna returned about five minutes later to inform me that she had reserved three seats, at the bar, in Sakura, for the next evening at seven o'clock. Can you understand how special Reyna made us feel? The food at Armanto is spectacular but there is one problem: It's difficult to not over eat! There is a culinary theme every night but there is always pasta, pizza, Mexican and seafood available and there are chefs on hand to conjure up anything else you may desire. We were served by Lidia, who...you guessed it...I met last year! Lidia immediately recognized me and was excited to see me again...as I was her. We had a great conversation and as usual she provided superior service, something one does not usually encounter at a buffet. Muchas gracias Lidia! The next evening we arrived at Sakura promptly at 7 o'clock. We were greeted by Roberto who immediately escorted us to our three seats...in the rear...at the bar. Roberto summoned Alex, one of the servers, to assist with our beverage needs. Lo and behold Alex showed up with our favorite bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon! How does that happen? Throughout the evening (a presentation I'll describe in a moment) Alex was there to provide us with superior service. He seemed to really enjoy helping make our dinner a success...and it was. Roberto stopped by several times as well...but wait...there's more! Ricardo, the chef from La Locanda even stopped by to pay us a visit! Are you starting to get the picture here? Sakura is a traditional Japanese steakhouse wherein the chef prepares your meal right in front of you on a giant flat top. Our chef was Christhian who delivered a fabulous presentation including incredible tricks and comedy. From the sushi to the beef to the shrimp to the vegetables...even the rice...everything was great. So not only did we enjoy delicious food but we got some great entertainment as well. Muchisimas gracias Christhian! Realmente te apreciamos! The lobby bar is always a busy place and we met another friend we made last year as well; Armando. Armando recognized us immediately and was happy to see us. He's always busy taking care of guests and he's very good at it. One evening we walked into the Piano Bar and who was there? Jimmy! Jimmy is one of the bartenders we made friends with last year. In fact, we spent most of our late evening hours with Jimmy last year as his warm smile and great sense of humor made those late nights even more special. We have several photos of all of us with Jimmy from our previous visits and we have even more now. We even video called my friend's wife who couldn't make this trip so she could say hello to Jimmy in person! jimmy is a great bartender and a great friend. He recognized all of us immediately and was happy to see us again. On a slow night at the PL Jimmy broke out a deck of cards and we all played Texas Hold 'em at the bar! During this trip we would inquire nightly with a manager to find out where Jimmy would be that evening. So, as you can see, it's the people that make ORP my favorite destination on the Riviera Maya. Of all the resorts and hotels I have stayed at (dozens) in Mexico over the years...none come close in terms of personal service and friendship. The value I received for the price paid is reasonable and competitive with other resorts. And there's no way you can put a price on the genuine friendships I have developed there. The best thing about Michigan winters is...LEAVING THEM...and visiting my friends at Ocean Riviera Paradise. SENOR MARKO RETURNS!

The entertainment team made the holiday, especially Nacho and Oscar! They made everything so much fun and enjoyable and we’re so friendly. The foam parties in the El Beso pool were absolutely amazing! The bar tenders were all so attentive. I’d definitely recommend Coco Bongo it was worth the money and I will definitely be going again!

Amazing Holiday

We have just returned from an amazing holiday. Yes we had read the negative reviews but we have to say the holiday is what you make it, go with an open mind. Check in was slow due to the fact that we requested 2 rooms to be next door to each other in Eden and it was running at 96% full. The Manager stepped in and with alittle research managed to get us 2 rooms opposite which was fine. The bedrooms were lovely with plenty of wardrobe space. We tried all 8 restaurants during our stay and some twice, our least favourite was the Italian, this is just personnel taste as it was full most nights. Our favourite was Sakura the Japanese, you must book this on the morning that you want to go, outside the buffet restaurant. Don't just turn up expecting to be able to eat, you will be disappointed. The pools are lovely but cold as they are not heated, plenty of entertainment around the pools. Belso pool is just for adults only. We found the beach better for us. BBQ on the beach at lunchtime. Eden pool has the most wonderful lady there cooking the most amazing crepes, our afternoon treat. Also if you turn left on the beach and walk for about 15 minutes you will find the most amazing beach. There was plenty to do in the evening with bowling, live shows, disco or the piano bar. Remember you have worked hard to get this holiday enjoy every moment of it. We did. Thank you to all the staff that made our holiday you work so hard too. Special thanks to Graciela our hostess every morning and lunch at the buffet and our waiter Luis Pola.

Just had dinner at Sakura the Japanese restaurant in Ocean Riviera Paradise in Playa Del Carmen. Great time with my spouse and 10 new friends around the Bennie Hanna style table-kitchen. The chef Cristhian Garduza was very entertaining to both the adults and the young kids at the table. Definitely would check it out. Reservation needed by 3:00.
