Another Unforgettable Vacation

My husband and I returned for our 6th visit to the Occidental Nueva Vallarta Royal Luxury Club and had another unforgettable vacation. First, we want to thank Garardo Salcado Gil, Royal Level - Concierge for everything he did for us to make our visit so special. Also thanks to Ricardo, Guadalupe Salagar and Esther Vega for making all of meals at the Royal Club Restaurant so fantastic. Cannot say enough about everyone who works at the Hotel as they give much more than 100% to all of their customers. Also, many thanks to Jorge to all of the attention he paid us at the Royal Club section on the beach. He certainly made up for the treatment we received the first couple of days we were there by the other gentleman that was working that area. All in all, it was a great trip and look forward to returning next year to see all of our 2nd family!!

Our waiter, Erik, at the buffet was very professional and very attentive to our group's needs (10-20 people at any given time). He gave us outstanding service every day of our five day stay and we recommend this hotel's restaurant based on his attention and personal service.

Second time here even better

This was my second time at the Grand Occidental, and I can say the resort is better now than the last time I was here. The staff at the First Club is simply outstanding, they took care of all of my needs quickly and efficiently. "From Restaurant reservations to transportation information, to refreshments they were there with a smile... kudos to Raul. The Entertainment team was wonderful, they did everything possible to get all guests envolved with daily activities, while not being being to pushy. The food at the buffet had something for everyone and if you couldn't find something to eat you should never go to an All-Inclusive resort because you will never be happy. All the staff at the buffet were always smiling and they ensured your needs were always met. The two a la carte restaurants the La Hacienda and Los Olivos were excellent, service was outstanding and the Mango margarita's were to the best in Mexico. The pool and the ocean were warm and you could walk for miles on the beach. The Turtle Sanctuary is only a 15 minute walk from the hotel, 32 peso fees to see hundreds of baby released back to the sea. Only two drawbacks, most of the rooms have no balconies and the Adult pool is under construction. I will revisit this resort.

Nice Stay - Detailed Review

We just returned from a one week stay at the Occidental and would like to share my review. I will list all the pros and cons by topic and then some other general comments. Check In and Service When we first arrived we found the bell boys to be very helpful and polite. They took our bags and held them while we checked in and once checked it promptly took them up to our room. We took a taxi several times from the resort and the bell boys call the taxi for you. There are a few taxis that sit at the resort so you never have to wait too long for one. All of our taxi drivers were very professional. Check in was easy and quick and the gentleman at the desk was able to answer our questions. We arrived at 1:00 in the afternoon and were able to check into out room then. Check out was also very easy and fast. Service at the pool side bar, snack bar, all the restaurants and from every staff member was exceptional. Very personable, friendly and offering you anything you want. They were very quick and we never had to wait too long for our drinks and food. They were very gracious and always had a smile on their face. We are tippers and tipped about one USD dollar per drink and a few more for a meal. They accept both Pesos and USD. Food and Restaurants We ate at all the restaurants on the resort, and we always ensure that we eat at the reservable ones as well. The Occidental has one buffet, a Mexican (reservable) an Italian (reservable) and a pool side taco bar. They also have a few other restaurants as part of the royal club which we did not try as we decided to not do the royal club fee. From what we understood it was about a $100 USD per person per day extra. We never felt like we should have done it either. The drinks were pretty good and the food was delicious with the standard all inclusive. We personally found the buffet to be awesome. Every meal offered a huge selection of foods and was hot and fresh, often there was a pasta bar, taco bar, omelet station or something that they would make in the spot for you. I am not a seafood eater, but my husband found the seafood selection fresh and very good. The dessert selection was huge with almost every night being a different assortment. They had a Mexican night on a Wednesday night and the buffet menu was mostly authentic Mexican and it was so good! You never left the buffet hungry! We were pleasantly surprised with the pool side taco bar. They made the tacos hot and fresh for you upon request and were very tasty. The condiments were great as well and they had tables you could sit at to enjoy your snack, or not so snack-ish but more meal-ish if you are a taco lover like my husband. We reserved a meal at the Mexican restaurant and it was quite good. Dress attire is casual there. The had a good selection of appetizers and main dishes and the desserts were very good. We had a nice view of the ocean for that meal which was nice. We also made a reservation at the Italian restaurant. The food there was also very good. They serve a special coffee that is poured while it is on fire. We didn't order it but was impressive to watch them make it. The dress attire there is more formal than the Mexican restaurant. Pool Area and the Beach The do have an adult only pool but it was closed for renovations while we were there but I understand that it will be only for royal club members after it opens. I would never pay more for a different pool as I found the two other pools quite good. They have one for children and then another bigger one where more of the adults were. There were quite a few lawn chairs around it but I could see it getting busy over the winter which is their high season where it might be harder to find one. The chairs are very comfortable and are fairly clean. They also have small plastic tables for your drinks and quite a few umbrellas around if you want to stay out of the sun. The pools were quite clean and we seen employees checking water quality at night and vacuuming and skimming it early in the morning. They always looked very clean. They are chlorine pools, not salt. They do have an entertainment crew that keeps things going and interesting around the pool area during the day and they play pretty good music. When you check into the hotel you will get a towel card for each person. Don't lose the cards as I believe you get charged for it if you do. You trade in the card for a towel down by the pool. You can trade it for card back when you’re finished with it or for a new towel if you need a clean one. The towels are a pretty good quality and are large. The resort has cabanas beds for royal club members or lots of lawn chairs for your use. They chairs are the same ones as by the pool and were good quality. They have a large beach and they seemed to keep it quite clean. They also had water sports equipment as well as a life guard on duty during the day. They raise a flag depending on how rough the water is as a warning. We found the water to be very warm, it was so nice. No weeds, no rocks, lots of sand with no big drop offs. They do have a swimming area marked off so power boats and seadoos don't come in to close. Even when the flag was red, we were out there swimming though and didn't find the under tow too strong. The water isn't that nice Caribbean blue as the sand is quite silty there but it is still very nice. We walked the beach several times during our week there and found it glorious. The sunsets are amazing and the beach the whole way along is clean and soft sand. We walked it a few nights as well and because there are condos and resorts all away along we felt very safe. There are a lot of peddlers that walk along the beach that try to get you to buy their stuff. Everything from jewellery, pottery, shirts, henna, cigars and sand toys. They can get a bit annoying when they are hounding you. The closer you sit to the roped off area the more of a target you become. The resort has roped off an area where you can sit, but they are not able to cross unless of course you are buying something from them. It doesn't stop them from yelling or whistling to get your attention though. One huge plus for the Occidental is that they have a feet washing step as you come in off the beach. The step has water in it and if gives you the opportunity to be able to rinse your feet before coming up around the pool or putting your feet back into your sandals. My husband and I thought this was brilliant! Our Room Honestly we have stayed in worse hotel rooms but for being a well rated resort we were expecting better. When we first got into the room we thought it was ok until we tried to sleep. We had requested a room in a quiet area of the hotel as I do suffer from insomnia and am a very light sleeper. If you are at all not a good sleeper, I highly recommend that you request your room to be as far away as possible from the monstrous ice machine, not near a stairwell and not be facing the back of the hotel. We were lucky (NOT!) to have all three and I didn't sleep at all. We were in room 329 which was right next to the ice machine (and yes, people get ice at 4 in the morning) near the stairwell and at the end of the hall (everyone has to walk by your door and the halls echo badly) and faced the back of the hotel and look down on the theatre. It's open with no walls and they have shows nightly. They go till after ten but you can hear every word and the music just as though you were sitting in the crowd. I was very disappointed and really in hindsight we should have requested a different room that next morning. Other than that, the telephone didn't work but there was lots of hangers for clothes, the water was hot, the bed was comfortable and the AC worked well. House keeping did a very good job as well. General Observations We found that there was a lot of construction around the resort. On occasion we heard loud pounding, partly on account of our crappy room location and every once in a while a stairwell would be taped off. It is an older resort (about 20 years I think) so I get that they need to up keep it. It just seemed like it was everywhere. The lobby of the resort and the lobby bar is nice. Very comfortable. If you want wifi in your room, it is an extra cost but you have free wifi in the lobby if you need to send a quick message or email. It isn't robust enough for streaming videos and such but it's enough to get you by. All of the public bathrooms on the resort are ok. Most are clean and I wasn't left stranded with no toilet paper. I did find that the stalls by the lobby and the ones on the other side of the Italian restaurant were quite small and the doors open inward. I am not a big person but really found then cramped. If you were on the heavier side, I could see then being a pain to try and get in to. The bugs in general were not bad on and around the resort and in town but out of town, or in the bush we were bitten quite a bit. Bring bug spray for any excursion you do as you’re going to want it. We did some excursions with Vallarta Adventures which I will review under them but the taxi there is cheap and it is a short ride. There is a bank, casino, hospital and dentist across the road and shopping at paradise village which is a three minute walk. In all thought our vacation was great. I am not sure if we would go back to the Occidental with so many others to try but it was nice break from Alberta!
