Everything was average (room, food, amenities, drinks), with the exception of a few things. The wait staff for meals were excellent, and the rock hard beds were below average. The food was good, not great, as was the night time entertainment, although The Jackson's Tribute were very good. The two pools close before dark. Why would the adult pool close before dark, and this include the Jacuzzi? The first three days of our stay we did not have access to the water activities. Apparently no one to hand out paddle boards and boogie boards, and then two days they kept a red flag up, unable to give out items, even though the flag was hanging straight down. No one seemed to monitoring this. The general location was good, and you could walk a half block to a small shopping center. We left behind some belongings and a set of keys. It has now been five weeks. I still don't have a response to the shipping voucher I must pay to get my items back, and I am in contact with the management staff every week by phone and email. I cannot recommend anyone staying here. There are better places to spend your money and precious vacation time. More>

We had a blast on our honeymoon! The staff was amazing and so friendly. everything was clean and great quality. So much to do, but so relaxing! We stayed for 6 days and got to relax by the pool (adult pool was awesome with great lounge chairs) or the beach (fabulous cabanas). The activities and activity staff were so fabulous and made our stay just that much better. More>

Barcelo will never get my business again!

We returned to this hotel one year later on a gift certificate offered by the Vacation Club. Biggest mistake ever! Our first trip in 2015 was okay. The hotel felt a little dated, but a few key staff members made the vacation pleasurable. The all-inclusive meals were good, the grounds were well maintained, and the hotel room was satisfactory. This was when it was operated by Occidental. Now it is operated by Barceló. And the quality of service has dropped SIGNIFICANTLY. When we arrived at our room at 4PM local time, we could not enter because it was still being cleaned by the maid service. Yes - still being cleaned at 4PM. But it was day one, and we brushed it off because we were excited about having a good time. We went downstairs to the lounge for our first cocktail. And they were far from good - too sweet. I'm not sure what kind of drinks they were used to making, but after trying 4 or 5 versions, I switched to straight whiskey for the rest of my trip. We ran into a bartender who remembered us from our previous stay on the third day into our vacation. He was able to find some fun drinks for us to consume during our last two days, but only after asking us if whiskey was all we were going to drink while on vacation. Imagine that - he remembered us as customers from a year ago and was the only one curious enough about our enjoyment to ask for feedback. The crapshoot continues from there... There are two main pools on the grounds, and we opted for the adult pool since we did not have children with us (It's much quieter there). Here's a comparison of our experience. In 2015, we received lots of attention by various wait staff. Our drinks were never empty. In 2016, there was never more than one person serving the entire adult pool area. And, bless her heart, she had to serve other areas of the facility. She would make any Fitbit proud. I frequently had to get our drinks from the bar. Normally I wouldn't complain about this, but I bring it up to show the stark contrast in the level of service offered year over year. But wait, there's more... rather, there's less. The buffet restaurant was pretty good, but you get tired of the choices and the flavors after a few days. It seems like the food is all seasoned the same way for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We thought it only applied to the buffet restaurant. Nope - we were sadly surprised when we received the same over salted tastes for our "fancy" dinner in the Los Olivos Italian restaurant onsite. The filet mignon had the exact same taste as the breakfast sausage. We shared my seafood pasta (it was good, but didn't seem fresh) instead of complaining since our previous complaints went unanswered - we even laughed about it wondering, "Would they even change anything if we complained?" I'll continue with our story and let you be the judge. And make sure you get a reservation for this place if you dare - it was barely half-full but we were told by another couple we met during our stay that they could not get a reservation to make ours a foursome since they were fully booked. The other reservation-only restaurant was strangely operated. It accepted reservations only for dinner, and was open seating for lunch (maybe breakfast too, but we never went there in the morning). It offered Mexican cuisine and we thought we found gold when we ate there. The food was the best we had at the hotel and we just smiled and shook our head and the thought that we waited all this time to get quality food. We were wrong again. Not to disappoint we realized we got too excited after the fresh pico de gallo. The meal peaked at that point. Then they offered to get us some strange drink that was their special margarita. They must have drained the planet of sugar based on the amount added to our drink. It was impossible to taste anything but sugar. It was quickly replaced with Diet Coke. The entrée was okay - I recall steak fajitas that were not flavorful at all. The general entertainment (stage shows, daytime activities, etc.) was jovial, and people seemed to have a good time with the activities. It wasn't for us as we chose to relax as much as possible during our time off. So why take the time to write a review for a resort that wasn't so memorable? My final and most animated complaint goes to the First Club, Vacation Club, or whatever "Special" Club Occidental/Barceló has to offer. The service people will habitually lie to you to get you to go away. Heck - you're only there for a short amount of time, right? We were promised the return trip, and either a trip to Hawaii or a cruise. And after several attempts (over the span of three months) to contact the front desk, the Service Manager, the First Club Manager, the phone support line, the support email address to rectify the issue, we haven't received a single word in response. If it weren't for some of the great individuals who worked there, I would have rated this as terrible (especially for the value). I won't ever willfully go to another Barceló property again. I only submit this review as a cautionary tale to others thinking of visiting this resort. It is on a downward spiral (attested to by several of the staff as well, old and new). Your experience may vary, but if you can make a switch I recommend going to a different resort along the Nuevo Vallarta beach. More>

Loved it here! A smaller resort, but excellent quality. We upgraded to the 'Royal Club' package. Happy that we did. There is a restaurant (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and bar available on the floor reserved for the Royal Club. Amazing food, amazing view (sunset!), and amazing service. The bartender, Ricardo, was excellent with his service and drink concoctions (Spanish or Italian coffee was awesome! Did the whole performance of lighting it on fire, etc). His brother (his name for some reason escapes me at the moment!) also works as a server and was very hospitable and friendly. Both made our visit very special. Jesus, was our server in the morning for breakfast. Amazing and friendly. It was wonderful to see him every morning. Buffet and the Italian and Mexican ala carte restaurants were very good too! But, the restaurant in the Royal Club was our favorite. The resort has 2 pools. An adult pool and a family pool. We spent our time at the adult pool. Pool temp was nice and warm. Pool side drink service by Julietta was excellent! That girl is on the move constantly with a beautiful smile on her face and very friendly! The beach is gorgeous. With the Royal Club package you have access to the bed cabana's. A dream come true for me! R n R on a bed on the beach... what more could you ask for? Well, of course there was Jeorge! He brought us any drink and food that we would want. So friendly and sweet. Great service from everyone at this resort! Our room had a great view and comfy king bed. WiFi needs to be paid for in room. However, in the lobby it is complimentary; as well, the Royal Club has a computer to use which offers free access to internet and to the printer. Close by is a Starbucks, pharmacy, hospital, and a small mall. Will be back! More>
