Puerto Vallarta/Riviera Nayarit - Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta

The Occidental Grand is wonderful hotel. My wife and I just spent our honeymoon there and we really enjoyed ourselves. we had an ocean view and it was very nice. You must speak with Idaly. She is wonderful and very very helpful. I would recommend the hotel to anyone who wants to have a wonderful time. But avoid the people who are trying to sell you timeshare. They're very persistant in their sells tactics.

When we arrived at the Occidental on April 2, we were pleased with what we saw, and were looking forward to spending the week with my sister and her husband (it was my sister's birthday on 4/4). When we arrived at the Occidental on April 2, we were pleased with what we saw, and were looking forward to spending the week with my sister and her husband (it was my sister's birthday on 4/4). However, we were told that the hotel was overbooked, and we would have to go down the street to another hotel. Our room at that hotel was not very nice, and we had no "privileges" at that hotel. We had to go back to the Occidental for all our meals, etc. Finally, about 4:00 pm the next day, we were given a room at the Occidental, and the room was nice. This place was pretty much like every other "all-inclusive" place we have been: food is OK, but nothing special, pool and beach were fine, staff was nice. However, we are in our 60's, and it was a bit of a hassle to have our stuff at another hotel. By the way, we NEVER saw the Apple representative until the day we left.

Absolutely great time, staff friendly and very accommodating, we will be back at another time, this was our 2nd stay at the Occidental Grand Nuevo Vallarta in 6 weeks and we treated very well .. More>

Everything was fine except: Stuff was pushing "Membership"(timeshare) Expensive internet/phone ( good places give free WiFi) No pool, no balcony in room. Specialty restaurants were average, but everyday buffet was great including service. .. More>

There are no balconies in the hotel, but some rooms do face the ocean. At check-in we were told we were being upgraded and that we should go right to the desk on the 6th floor. The room we were given was on the back of the hotel overlooking the hotel service area. The room was so small the bed bare .. More>

The room we were given was on the back of the hotel overlooking the hotel service area. The room was so small the bed barely fit! We requested to be changed to a ground floor room and were then given a room also on the back of the hotel with a patio that opened onto the construction going on next store. When we called because the air conditioning didn't work, they told us to close the patio door and it would go on. When it still didn't go on we called again and someone sent to our room to look. After a while it was found there was no working electricity in the room so we moved again. Thankfully the 3rd time they got it right but this seemed needless when we overheard employees remark that the hotel was less than half full.

The hotel was nice and the service was great. The food was not so good. The hotel staff was trying to sell you a type of time share of their hotels. They had a desk right outside the elevator so every time you got on and off the elevator they were right in your face. It was very annoying. .. More>

Rooms were clean, but the beds are fairly hard. Food was decent, but not a lot of options - the specialty resturaunts were not as good as the buffet. The pool activites & associated sound system were overbearing - not conducive to relaxing. Had a 1st floor room with an oceanview next to the poo .. More>

The pool activites & associated sound system were overbearing - not conducive to relaxing. Had a 1st floor room with an oceanview next to the pool, but switched rooms after 1 night due to noise from the disco and evening entertainment. Evening shows start too late and the sound system is way too loud for anyone with an ocenview wanting to go to bed early after a long day.

I had a great vacation in PV. The food, rooms and staff at the occidental were great. The bed was firm the pillows soft and the beach was wonderful. I will be going back in the fall and again in the years to come. Danny .. More>

If you really want a home away from home only you are being waited on instead of doing all the waiting on others this is your dream location. Smiling faces of Sergio and Patty are there to help. Sergio felt like our own personal concierge and by the end of the stay our friend. When we needed something from the store he walked us over to make sure we knew where to go. My daughter and her friend were with us and the staff watched out for them the entire vacation. Hector and Carlos are amazing bartenders and also kept a watch on the 18 year olds. When we wanted a fun place to celebrate an 18th birthday, Delphine recommended Pepe's and called her son who works their and let them know we were coming. There are more than enough staff to go around and someone is always available to help. This is a smaller resort so if you are looking for an intimate place or a great family place I highly recommend it. I can't wait to go back! We miss our new family already!

My friend and I were suprised with a trip to Puerto Vallarta for our high school graduation...we were excited beyond belief! When we had arrived at Occidental I had no idea what to expect. It honestly felt just like the disney channel show The Suite Life of Zach and Cody!! We were greated with smiling faces by all of the staff. Every corner we would turn we would get a smile from the staff and they would ask how our day was going and where we were from. Sergio (the best concierge in the WORLD) sat down with us and gave us a little run down on how the resort worked, where to go for food, where the pools where, and the bars. We spent five days here, and even though we left the resort a few times to tour and shop, i would not have minded to stay at the resort all day long for those five days. The staff here really makes you feel like you are family. Being that Occidental is not a HUGE resort you get very acquainted with the staff, and everyone knows your name. I felt extremely safe and welcomed here. Sergio even went the extra mile in order to walk us 4 girls to the mall down the street! The resort is very clean and has great service! There is a buffett for all three meals of the day that has a wide selection of food, as well as a couple nice restaurants! Carlos and Hector were the best bartenders ever! And make sure when you go and see Hector at the bar by the pool order...mamas drink..best drink you will ever have! Okay...to sum this all up I highly, highly recommend staying at the occidental for as long as possible!!! I wish i could have stayed here for the rest of the summer. Amazing vacation!

Our stay at the Occidental during the first week in June truly could not have been better! From our first steps into the lobby right through to our departing steps, everybody at the Occidental treated us like family! All the restaurant staff members (Le Buffet/La Hacienda and Los Olivos)were welcoming and more than ready to please.The food was plentiful and wonderfully presented. We did upgrade to the Royal Club (highly recommend, if possible) so we had most of our meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) upstairs, but made sure to also dine at each of the other restaurants, a few times. The Royal Club chefs outdid themselves; food was not only beautifully served but absolutely delicious, as well! The food was certainly a plus but for us, it was the Ricardos who also kept us coming back. "Morning/lunch" Ricardo. Wow! I don't think words can honestly describe this gentle, funny, ready to please, warm, inviting, supreme server, adequately! We were beyond fortunate to discover him! (Oh, my bananas, Ricardo!!!!) Then there is "Dinner" Ricardo! He, too, provided us with outstanding service each and every time. Not only was he warm and inviting but he was on top of his game, too, with our preferences! Our sincerest and deepest appreciation goes out, as well, to the ever patient and happy women up in The Royal Club. Priscilla, Gabby and Yazmin went above and beyond the call of duty, it seems, for our each and every query. They always had the most beautiful smiles on their faces, whenever we popped in. This carried through our entire stay and was met with no matter what the situation was involving. They made sure our stay was one of pure comfort, warmth and honestly, left us feeling like family! Again, due to our upgraded package, most of our dealings regarding The Occidental staff, were with the ones involved with the Royal Club. That being said, though, all the other hotel staff we encountered, greeted us with warmly and genuinely seemed to be happy to see and serve us. The hotel grounds are simply beautiful. We appreciated the smaller scale of the resort and loved the "adult only" pool area - nice bonus. The beach is stunning. Can easily walk for miles and miles...(If up to it, you can walk to Bucerias; closer to that village the sand becomes a bit more coarse but still, more than manageable). The rooms are attractive and kept spotless. There is a lot of space in them to put your belongings and the bathroom is fully equipped. Nuevo Vallarta is a beautiful little spot- away from the hustle and bustle of P.V but more than close enough to it, if one wants to head that way for anything. (Clubs, shopping etc). Transportation, though, is required. The Occidental is also nicely located with the beach right at it's door step and right across the street is a small mall- grocery, clothing, restaurants - (pretty much anything one needs is in it) Without a doubt, we were thrilled with our stay. Ideally, we will be heading back, sooner than later. Again, the accommodations left us wanting or needing nothing at all (food, beverages, amenities, rooms all included in that statement) but above all else, it also is hugely in thanks to Priscilla, Gabby, Yazmin, the two Ricardos and the entire staff at The Occidental that will see us return! The only "fly in the ointment" if one sees it as such: Due to the lay out of the hotel (similar to most resorts in Mexico, Caribbean/ Cuba etc) the noise from the day to day echoes throughout. If one is looking for a place for a quiet getaway to catch up on sleep, they may want to look elsewhere. This wasn't a concern for us as we were there to have fun and, well, be on holiday! As for the time share people. We were approached once, at the hotel. We politely declined and he was more than friendly and we left it at that. Never once did we feel any pressure. (The airport, however ,much different story. To get through that spectacle I suggest one just focuses on getting to the outside of the building. Anybody trying to approach you after you go through the sliding glass doors, once you have your bags, are there for one reason only: time shares. Period. Do not let them fool you with their security approach by flashing or pointing to their badges; trying to convince you of being with your vacation rep etc. Just make your way outside!) My wife and I stayed from May 25th-June 1st, and absolutely loved it! The staff bent over backwards to help us in every way possible. The food was incredible, and the kitchen staff and waiters were SO friendly and helpful. There was never any garbage laying around, and the whole place was beautiful. We loved the beach and pool ares as well. The only problem that we had was that they really push to show the "presentation" to visitors, to get them to sign on with their program. Once we sat through the 90 (or so) minute presentation, they left us alone and gave us a free tour in exchange. (The program does look good, but is out of our financial reach for now.) The beach vendors were kind of annoying as well, but they are just trying to make a living too. From what we could see, the pushy sales pitches are just part of the culture in the Vallarta area. It was our first time at an all inclusive, but we plan on taking the rest of our family when we can afford to go because it is very family oriented. God willing, we will be returning to the Occidental Grand! A literal tropical paradise!

This was our eleventh trip to the Occidental Grand, and the first since the hotel was renovated. The rooms are now much improved with more storage space and much better beds and quieter AC. The bathroom has also been enlarged. Major changes to the main buildings include a new adult swimming pool and a new theatre, plus the old theatre has been converted into a lovely lounge area with great views of the beach area and a nice cool breeze most days. The food is excellent with lots of choice, it is well presented and the staff there are very helpful. Although there are a few of the staff from before the renovation, most of them are new. The hotel has done a great job recruiting them as they are all very good at their jobs and will go to great lengths to help. Of particular mention are Idaly, Laura and Gabriella in the guest services roles. They arranged a number of things for us that were special. In the restaurants Erik, Daniel, Juan, and Everado ( was Rafael), were all very attentive to our needs. Carlos ( from before the reno) managed the lounge bar very well and supplied everyone with the drinks they requested. New shows were presented at the theatre in the evening and they were good entertainment. Mau, the activities director has done well in obtaining talented people to perform. Clearly, as we have been 11 times we like this hotel, but we have friends that have been many more times than we have. We all agree that the attraction is the location, the beach is in the best part of the bay, the small size of the hotel and above all the people and how they treat us. We have no hesitation in recommending the Occidental Grand in Nuevo Vallarta Dave and Shelagh Calgary
