Beautiful resort, BEST service, Great entertainment!!
My sister and i spent a week here in Early-Mid June (2016) and we had the best time!
The resort is NOT a typical "party" resort, it is a little on the quieter side, but that is exactly what we wanted. Don't be fooled because you can still have a great time with the all inclusive drinks, entertainment, food, and endless options for beach life or excursions!!
Everyone at this resort was so friendly and helpful and genuinely seem to LOVE their jobs. All of the cocktail waitresses were great, EVERY person in the restaurant/bar areas, the front desk, housekeeping, you are ALL great!! I have a couple shout outs....
CARLOS was our bellman upon arrival and he ended up being the same one we "checked out" with. He was so informative and friendly and welcoming!!
ERIK was our server the entire week in the main restaurant - 100%, hands down, nicest guy. Remembers your name, as well as what you like (coffee, juice, alcohol, etc), very, very attentive, but not annoying! Thank you Erik!
Pool entertainer - Went by the name of "PAPI CHULO" (i'm sorry i don't know your real name!) He made an ordinary pool day so much fun with his outgoing personality and games. THANKS FOR THE FUN!!
I would highly reccomend this resort to anyone looking for a week of relaxation, sun and fun!
Great All-Inclusive Experience
This was our first all-inclusive experience and I would plan to go back. The staff was super friendly and always available. A few highlights:
Airport and Transfers. PVR airport was fairly simple for customs and immigration from the US. We were probably out of the airport within 30 minutes of landing. Based on feedback from other reviews, we kept our heads down until we got to the official taxi stands and got a cab to the resort. The choices we had were either 300 pesos or $25 which made me glad I had gotten a few pesos before our trip. On the return trip to the airport, the bellman got us a cab and the fare was 150 pesos. Both of these costs were much less expensive than more convenient than prepayment options seemed to be. Check in and security at the airport was a breeze.
Our room was very comfortable but pretty much a nice hotel room. The resort is constructed so all of the rooms at least partially face the ocean so I don't know what the difference between Deluxe and Deluxe Ocean View would have been. They did a nice job of restocking the refrigerator. Initially, we had to make specific requests but once restocked, we did fine.
Food ranged from good to very good. Buffet was generally good but, like any buffet some items were better than others. Omelets for breakfast were a highlight from the buffet but there was generally a good choice of items and the main items for lunch and dinner seemed to change every day. For lunch, we found we liked the La Hacienda restaurant--sampled several items from the menu and everything was very good but the fish tacos were great (my sampling ended after I tried those). We liked the pace of an ala carte lunch were you could sit and look out over the ocean. For dinner, we had one visit to Los Olivos (Italian)and one visit to La Hacienda (Mexican). Los Olivos was outstanding and the best meal we had. La Hacienda was very good. (a small tip is that the staff said reservations for these restaurants could be made 24 hours in advance but what they meant was reservations could be made at 8:00 am on the day before--if you waited until 24 hours in advance, reservations would be full).
Drinks--we found the bartenders and servers were wonderful. Tried several different drinks and everything was tasty and refreshing. Also frequently requested water just to keep hydrated.
Activities and pools. The level of sound and activity around the pools was about right--not too loud or wild but not silent either. We found a wonderful spot at the back of the adult pool where you could sit and watch over the ocean--with Jessica keeping us supplied with fresh drinks, the time really flew there. The activity staff was very helpful with encouraging people to participate in various organized activities and assisting with the kayaks and paddleboards. My favorite activity was the bike tours--I had one tour that went to a small zoo with tigers, a leopard, pumas, deer, an alligator and a variety of birds and one tour that went to a dolphin discovery area; the bikes weren't great but were fine for the short ride.
Beach. The beach in this area is wonderful--nice broad flat beach where you can walk a long ways and the sand was nice and the beach was very clean as far as we walked.
Entertainment. The evening shows were not spectacular but they were fun. My favorite was a acrobatic show on Wednesday night. After the shows, everyone generally headed for the lobby bar for a nightcap.
When we made our reservation, we debated about the Royal Club. For us (and for a five day stay), it did not seem worth the additional cost. I was a little concerned about being treated as a second class citizen but did not experience that at all and felt like we made the right decision at the end of the trip.
Wifi--the free wifi in the lobby was a little spotty and we ended up purchasing wifi for one device ($25 for seven days so it seemed like a bargain). The purchased wifi worked well throughout the public areas in the resort and especially well in our room.
This was our first time at an all-inclusive resort and we would definitely come back to the Occidental based on our experience--I probably expected to be disappointed in at least a few things but can't think of anything was a negative from our trip.
July stay at resort
What was great:
Small resort, everything close by. Also a little shopping mall and casino across the street, star bucks. You felt you could leave and walk around a bit.
You could always get chairs at adult pool, it was nice and quiet. Although I spent most of time at the beach, because why go to an ocean and sit at the pool? I'm a prairie girl so bring near the ocean is rare. Chairs in shade at the beach you needed to get to by about 9:30. There were still chairs later, but not as shady. Water was nice, clear, I liked the waves. I did see 2 rays the day before we left, which was great because I'd never seen them in the wild, but a bit scary too. I'm glad I didn't notice until we were almost at the end of our vacation. I was in the ocean everyday.
The buffet was actually pretty good for buffet food. I am a bit in the picky side, but I could always find something. As compared to a few vacations in the DR, where I lived on bread and fruit, this was fantastic. Lots of selection and edible. The restaurants were good, best at the Italian.
Service great except housekeeping at times. Sometimes come in morning, sometimes after supper for the only time in the day. Our nighty turn down service only happened once, and one day housekeeping never came at all. The room had a smell. The shower has a clear wall but you can push the closet door over it for privacy.
The excursions we took I thought good value for the cost, did day long drive tour through the city and a few other stops, and the boat ride to the dinner theatre across the bay for the show there, it was very good!
Overall nice quiet and relaxing. It would be great for relaxing couples and families, not much going on for loud nightlife and suited me perfectly. There was a kids club, but looked very quiet and geared towards little kids, didn't look like much for older8-12 year olds.
Not a happy anniversary
We chose this resort because reviews stated it was a smaller, quieter resort and it offered what seemed like a great anniversary package deal with the Royal Club. I am 35 and we were celebrating our 10 yr anniversary. We did upgrade and paid for Royal Club and stayed on the 6th floor. But we were horribly disappointed with the hotel after a week. I will break this down into pros and cons.
-Room was okay. It had a line in the shower to hang wet clothes, and it had a real hair dryer and robes. But see con section.
-Staff is AWESOME. I was sick, and the staff offered to send food off the menu with my husband to me to help me feel better.
-Beach area is so peaceful. No problems being waited on. Make sure you tip them - they deserve it. And vendors are nice. Won't hound you like in town.
-Lots of English tv stations, which normally I wouldn't even think of, but when stuck in the room with a fever it was a nice option.
- Room service food is same food as you could get in the restaurants. Very nice option especially when travelling outside the resort and can't make dining hours.
-They log when you take a taxi and where you are going when you leave. Made us feel very safe.
-Michael Jackson show is awesome! Must see!
-No wifi in room. Pro to me because it forced my husband to shut down and enjoy the week! Computers with printer available 7th floor.
-Loud, rude, obnoxious guests ruined the romantic family atmosphere. Awoken at 1 am to "Chug, chug, chug, chug" chant from Lobby bar. Called to complain, told guests were here for a wedding. Nothing happened. Guests partied until well past 2:30 am. We had to be up at 7 am for an excursion. Next night loud group in lobby swearing and shouting across the grounds. Saw one guy peeing on a tree. Suddenly felt like we were caught up in spring break.
-We paid for Royal Club, so when neighbors down the hall are so drunk they can't make it back to their room without knocking over the fire extinguisher and crashing into the walls, we feel the luxury is lost. Was not a Royal Club. Once again, we were living in spring break. And once again told that they are just wedding guests and will be gone by end of week. But hearing drunks every night for 3-4 nights of our 7 night trip... really. So not Royal Club.
-Ocean rooms overlooked Lobby Bar. Had window closed and still heard partiers perfectly. Wanted to open window to listen to ocean waves, but had to wait until after 3 am to do so.
-Anniversary package - ummm... never got most of it. Supposed to receive candlelight dinner - didn't get. Rose petal turn down - didn't get. Mimosa breakfast- didn't get. Scheduled it all, but there was always a miscommunication with staff. So don't count on the sweet love package.
-Mold around shower floor.
-Nightly turndown didn't happen last three nights. Never told why.
-The upgraded amenities were only partially restocked in room the entire trip.
Once again, romance and family atmosphere lost. Not a place I am willing to bring my kids after what I saw. Morning guests were awesome. Just wish night guests were as nice. Others on excursions told us to try Marival and Grand Velas. Recommend looking there. We are.
And we highly recommend the Outdoor Adventure from Vallarta Adventures. So much fun! Can't wait to bring my kids when they are older. I became the coolest mom ever.
It was our first time to Puerto Vallarta and to an all inclusive. We had a wonderful experience. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The location is perfect - right on the beach so you can swim in any of the pools or in the ocean. We did both! Also there is a shopping mall that is only a 5 minute walk away. Our room was nice and clean with an ocean view and a king sized bed. We enjoyed the buffet with lots of choices - Mexican dishes and western. There are different theme nights. Eric and Alfredo took good care of us at breakfast and dinner. We ate at the Mediterranean restaurant one night and I had a fabulous seafood linguine. Another night we ate at La Hacienda and it was very good. Usually for lunch I had fish tacos at La Hacienda. The ladies serving drinks at the pool kept them coming. My husband and I were ill one night from too much indulgence at the buffet but the resort quickly referred us to their onsite doctor. We were fine by the next day. There were lots of activities like water polo, water aerobics, dance, yoga plus many free excursions. There is a bicycle tour to the zoo. We also enjoyed some of the night time entertainment - there are shows every night. We saw the circus one - very good. On our last night there was a traditional Mexican dance competition and it was fantastic to watch with all the costumes. We will be back to this beautiful resort for sure!
