Very good, friendly, professional staff is the highlight.

Spotless, well operated hotel with amazing staff. Kudos to our 'Top staff picks'; Gabriela (hostess-buffet), Jose at front desk and Luis (waiter-buffet) and Carlos (Bell Boy). Though 'all' staff we encountered were friendly, professional and very helpful and made the stay a pleasure. Rooms are nice, clean but found many views limited. We opted for immediate upgrade to suite with private veranda and it was most impressive. Food is great and drinks fine. Pool very nice but opted for adult pool as many kids (including diapered babies**!!) in other pool. Location is fine though rather quiet and a bit of a haul for those planning frequent excursions to downtown PV or selected tourist activities. (no hotel shuttle bus!) More>

Had such a great time

We just came back from one week at the Occidental and I am so glad we booked exactly this resort. First of all I have to say that the staff are incredibly nice and attentive. Every single person is smiling, friendly and helping you enjoy your vacation even more. The resort is spotless - the rooms, the facilities, the grounds, everything was clean and easy to enjoy. We spent most of our time on the beach, lounging in the chairs and playing in the waves. Free kayaking and stand up paddling every day (thanks for all help getting us past the waves, Victor!), boogie boarding and great staff brining us drinks all the time. I read about the lack of palapas in the comments and was a bit worried, but we never once had trouble finding shade on the beach and lying underneath the palm trees was so relaxing. Most other couples spent their time in the adult pool so we really felt like we had the beach to ourselves. And by the way the beach is wonderful! There is also a nice gym and a tennis court - we took advantage of both. The Mexican restaurant is very tasty - you can go there for lunch time when it works as a snack area. The food is same level quality as the evening a la carte, but you don't have to book anything - just walk in, sit by the beach and enjoy local dishes. We always felt like something was happening, the entertainment staff was engaging people and doing fun things. We did some dance lessons to shake off the margaritas - just great! I've been to several all inclusives before and this resort was the smallest I've been to, but we loved it - you can have all the privacy with all the fun. Also - big thank you to the staff for helping organize our anniversary surprise, it was very lovely. I would give two points of improvement to the concierge: 1. My boyfriend had to make an important work call in the morning and the WIFI did not work at all. In general the WIFI at the hotel is not very good, but as you are there to vacation, for us it wasn't that big of a deal. Still, when it's a business call, it would have been nice of the staff to try and find a solution for him but the front desk just said "nope, sorry, if it doesn't work, it doesn't work". That made his morning very frustrating. 2. There should be a disco! We really wanted to dance somewhere in the evening to some latin music and top 40, but the only thing open late is the lounge bar where most people would be staring into their phone because that's the only place they got WIFI. Overall I'd say, if you love a great beach, positive people around you and want to relax while also having a lot of options of being active, this resort is great. I hope we can come back! More>

Great small resort with excellent activities

I went with my mother and we both would go back again! It was very clean and the staff was excellent. The entertainment is the best part. They have aquasize at 12, water polo at 2, dancing lessons at 3 and a crazy game at 4. Then, great theatre each night. The Mexican fiesta night was very well done with professional dancers and traditional games. The food was mostly good at the buffet. The snack bar was always fresh and available when the buffet wasn't open. The special Italian restaurant served some of the best pasta i've ever had! Downsides: sewage odor in the bathroom. And, one of the servers on the last day was pushy and trying to chat me up to go on a tour with him. I imagine this was something he wasn't supposed to do. He wasn't a regular server around the kids pool so only had to deal with him for one day. Great resort and I'll be back in the winter!!! More>

A Solid Choice

This resort is a solid choice for an enjoyable trip to Nuevo Vallarta. Although it is not as big as some of the other all inclusives in the area it has a lot of positive qualities. The activity staff at the family pool were friendly and always had something fun going on. The family pool could be bigger. The quiet May weekend we were there it was big enough but I think if the resort was full it could get crowded. There is also a wading pool and a large adult pool with a hot tub. All the pools and the beach had plenty of lounge chairs. The beach was great. The sand was smooth and clean. The beach had a gentle decline so my kids could boogie board very safely. The resort has boogie boards, paddle boards and kayaks for no additional cost. The water can be kind of murky depending on the time of year. The resort also has a life guard on duty during the day. The food at the buffet was fine. Nothing to rave about but also lots of choices of both hot and cold foods. Erik and Lupe in the buffet were great serves. They remembered our names and what we liked to drink. They buffet offers mimosas in the morning and sparkling wine at night. The food at the Mexican specialty restaurant was very good. The drinks at the resort are made with name brand alcohol and you can ask for specific types. The staff are also happy to make your cocktail a double! My children were treated kindly by all the staff and they loved the smoothies that the bartenders made for them! The front desk staff were very helpful. They kindly helped make sure that all of my "My Barcelo Intense" benefits were accommodated. We even got to look at and choose between two different rooms for our "My Barcelo" upgrade! We never did get our welcome gift and it took about 20 hours for me to get the "free wifi" code but neither of these things really mattered much to us. If you are a "My Barcelo" member read the fine print of your benefits and don't be afraid to ask for them. The front desk were kind and accommodating when we did ask about our benefits. Be aware that our friends payed for an "ocean view" and ended up looking through a palm tree. We were shown an ocean view room with a terrace and the view was also obstructed by a palm tree and the terrace was barely big enough for two tiny chairs. We opted for a first floor walkout and it was great! The rooms are tiny but they are clean and the beds are comfortable but only doubles not queens. We spent all our waking time outside so it didn't matter to us but if you are imagining a big room you will be disappointedThe AC in our room worked great but the room did have a musty smell which unfortunately is often common in tropical climates. It didn't bother us once we were in the room, only when we first walked in. My two friends both had massages in the spa and really liked them. We have stayed at some very nice and very expensive all inclusive resorts and that is not what you are getting here. You are getting a clean hotel with friendly, accommodating staff, good food, name brand alcohol and a lovely beach. We paid about $50 per person per night for our family of 4 and we felt we got plenty for our money! We will return in the future. More>

I have mix emotions about my visit. Each year me and the dude take a yearly vacation and Mexico was the destination that we choose. I plan our vacation a year out. So when I picked Occidental I had read all the reviews and also looked at the pictures. I can say that the pictures were spot on. When we got there check in was pain less. I booked a deluxe ocean view. The room we got was room 619. By NO means this was NOT a ocean view. In order to see the ocean we had to break our neck and try to see pass a wall. I went to the front desk and asked for a different room. The next day we were moved to room 635. This room had a deluxe ocean view. It was WONDERFUL. The bed was VERY hard. It wasn't until this couple told us to ask for a mattress pad. That made the difference. Ask for a pad when you check in. Your body will thank you. The food wasn't what I expected. As a matter of fact the food was horrible. We ate off resort pretty much the whole stay. It's a quite resort so if you are looking for live action I suggest staying close to downtown. Would I come back....Only if they change the food line up and the tv situation. There were only 4 us channels. And if you buy the Internet to stream...it's not worth it. More>
