We really enjoyed our stay-great room!
TBotzon, Spokane WA
Thu Feb 11 07:31:45 EST 2016
We arrived on Feb. 5 and were pleasantly surprised to be greeted at the front desk with a fresh juice, little wet towels for our hands and bead leis. They also gave us a complimentary upgraded room. Our room was to be a garden but we got a room with a view over the ponds and partial ocean. Our room came with very nice robes and slippers. The bathroom we liked because there were two sinks across from each other so we could get ready for the day at the same time and keep our things separate. The toilet area closed off for privacy. There was a small refrigerator to keep our drinks and they also give two complimentary waters per day. The lanai was very large with a table and chairs as well as a chaise lounge. I unfortunately broke my foot before we got there so I could not use the pool but I wished I could! It was one of the rare pools that actually is deeper than 4' and has a deep end so it is swimmable. There were also a couple of jacuzzis that were clean and not over crowded. The breakfast buffet is very good with a selection of regular breakfast fare as well as a omelette area that you can get custom omelettes made while you wait. We ate at the Canoe house on site and everything was delicious. We were told the shopping was good in Kona but it was not very handicapped friendly and the Mauna Lani shops were actually better in my opinion. Not as many stores but a good selection of what we had already seen in Kona with a lot less hassle. We really like the peacefulness of the resort. We had left the Hyatt in Maui and this was much nicer for us. Less people, better food, and our room was a lot quieter too. They have a business area but you have to pay to use it. I called and asked if they could print my airline tickets before we left and they did no charge. They also had a luggage scale we used to make sure our luggage weight was equally distributed to avoid charges. We hope to return (un-injured this time) so we can enjoy the beach, cabanas and snorkeling next time. More>

Continues to have “A Spirit of Place" like no other!
Honu_Ohana, Washington DC, District of Columbia

This is my January 2016 review of Mauna Lani Bay Hotel. We sometimes come in other seasons, but we always come to Mauna Lani for two weeks in late January to celebrate our anniversary. I have posted several reviews; see them and the photos from this and prior years for more info about the hotel, snorkeling, activities, etc. We LOVE Mauna Lani--this was our 35th stay and we hope to have at least another couple of dozen awaiting us. The strong sense of place, the beauty of the land and sea there, the snorkeling, the peace and quiet, the serene elegance of the architecture and decor, the long-time staff...all of these are treasures that, for us, cannot be matched anywhere else on the island. We had a very late arrival this year because our connecting flight from SFO was delayed. Coming from IAD makes it a long day. Nonetheless, we were greeted warmly by the bell staff, who took our numerous bags (I am a heavy packer and we have 3 bags of snorkel gear). Check-in was at the desk that time of night, but we got our lei and juice and we knew our way to a familiar room! The bags came quickly and we changed into bathing suits and went to wade in the small beach lagoon for a few minutes, sat in the large, Oceanside Jacuzzi, and saw the brilliant stars and Milky Way overhead. Paradise re-found. As usual, we were in a deluxe ocean view room on the pool side. We prefer that side because there are great sunset views from the lanai, glimpses of dawn over Mauna Loa and Hualalai, and we can look out over the lagoon and bay there to assess snorkeling opportunities upon awakening. Although there are sometimes group evening events on the lawn (weddings, parties, etc.) they go quiet before 10 pm so it’s not an issue. I did not see any mosquitoes at Mauna Lani, not in and around the hotel, in the ponds area, or on the beach. I actually never have! Housekeeping was impeccable. The rooms have a small mini-fridge and coffeemaker. I am not a fan of the new coffee paks provided and am not sure they are even “Kona blend.” I ended up getting freeze-dried 100% Kona instant coffee at Foodland Farms and using the coffeemaker to make hot water. This year, although there was periodic high surf, we were able to go out snorkeling twice with t Mauna Lani Sea Adventures’ “Winona.” Both trips were to Garden Eels (the best spot of the day) but we saw different things each day and the snorkeling was never repetitive. Mauna Lani Sea Adventures also run whale watches and sunset sails. If you get a chance, do go out with them. It is a great boat and crew and the Puako reef makes for lovely snorkeling, a nice change from Makaiwa and elsewhere. I am giving Mauna Lani a “5” based on location, ambiance, historic quality and beauty of the grounds and shoreline, friendly and hospitable staff, snorkeling, room and sleep comfort, and overall value. My rating does not include food. For the past few years I have noted that Food and Beverage is an area that needs work and better management, to get it back on track, commensurate with the quality of the rest of the hotel. Breakfasts at Bay Terrace are still fine; many of the breakfast wait staff have been there for years and know what to do. The long-time “breakfast ladies” are a joy to see every year! Some newer staff are a little slow to take orders, replenish beverages, etc., but they will learn. The omelet station and fresh waffles from Arnold and Les are well worth the calories. Room service was excellent; we had two room service dinners looking out at the twilight beach after busy days. The cheeseburgers and fries are our yearly treat. Dinner at the Ocean Bar & Grill was a mixed experience. See my review at https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g29217-d1590043-Reviews-The_Ocean_Grill-Island_of_Hawaii_Hawaii.htm Dinner at Canoe House the last night was very good up until the entrees came. Then our formerly efficient server seemed to disappear, or be overwhelmed by other parties. As we waited with empty plates, we reflected that we’d best just get the check and skip dessert. We also would have had more champagne if asked, but since we weren’t, Canoe House missed some revenue (champagne and desserts). Other places we ate: Café Pesto, Beach Tree (Four Seasons), Brown’s Beach House (Fairmont), Napua. BEACHES: Mauna Lani’s beaches are typical of Big Island beaches in that they are both somewhat narrow, with salt-and-pepper sand and some rocks. If you are careful and look where you are going, you can walk into swimming depth water without water shoes. If you are prone to bounding in without looking, wear water shoes. The far beach on Makaiwa Bay, near Napua and the Boat House, is a 10-min walk or short (free) shuttle ride away. That sandy beach has lounge chairs and a few cabana chairs, but little shade overall, so bring a towel and hat and cover-up if you plan a long stay there. Snorkeling is superb here if the water is calm. The reef is extensive. I think I could snorkel there every day and never see it all or everything that it offers. Sadly, there is some coral bleaching, but the deeper the water, the better the coral looks. Fish are still plentiful. The lava-and-sand shoreline area in front of the hotel never seems crowded. It has hammocks and the classic, blue cabana chairs. If you look carefully at the bits of pumice in the sand and on the black rock in the lagoon, you will see bright green olivine crystals. The inner lagoon (Nanuki Inlet) right in front of the Mauna Lani has subtle (but rewarding) snorkeling. I think it is best on the waning tide. There is a large, sandy water entry near the big black rock; Some places get very shallow toward the edges of the lagoon, so backtracking is required to prevent touching anything, but that can be a bonus…I see things I missed! The coral bleaching here has been more severe, but there are abundant fish. We love Mauna Lani and it's the place we are happiest. We have our 2017 reservations in hand! Some notes and tips: (1) Apparently flower lei on arrival are gone for good. Women get a shell lei; men get a kukui nut lei. I miss the flower lei, but the new ones are more practical because you can take them home with you and not worry about ag inspection or preserving them. (2) The Resort Fee of $25 that covers parking and WiFi and some other stuff. We were pleased to get a discount on our snorkel trips. But don’t forget to tip housekeeping! That is not included in the resort fee. (3)There is a pay guest laundry. You can get change at the desk or use a credit card. I think you need change for the soap machine. Washing and drying each cost $3. The machines are all in good working order. (4) Why Choose Mauna Lani? We think Mauna Lani is the best spot on earth, with a wonderful “sense of place” and friendly and kind staff ‘ohana. It’s not glitzy and not excessively pampering…if you love the natural setting of the Big Island, are relatively self-directed, don’t need trappings and obsequiousness to make you feel good, my bet is you will love the place. It also has superb snorkeling right offshore at Makaiwa Bay (at the Beach Club), with clear water ("the more sand, the less clear the water" is a general observation). And it is about half the price of the Four Seasons Hualalai… (5) Is Mauna Lani Dated? Well, is a Frank Lloyd Wright house or Neutra house dated? Some reviewers dislike what they consider the “dated” and “1980s” look of the hotel. It was indeed built in the early 1980s and the architect was the famous Killingsworth, who also did the former Kapalua Bay Hotel and what was then the Kahala Hilton, as well as the Halekulani. In my view, it is a classic of that period. Mauna Lani has a Japanese-influenced, minimalist style. The rooms were freshly re-done in 2014, but retain the Japanese-influenced austerity of the original concept of Mauna Lani. The walls are white. The wood furniture has been refinished in a dark wood tone. The grounds and pond areas are well kept and extremely beautiful. The open-air lobby is spectacular in a “natural” way, with sweeping vistas. The thing to bear in mind is that the hotel is designed so that you look OUT at the ocean and mountains, not inwards AT the hotel. And when you are on the beach, the hotel keeps a low profile and does not dominate the landscape. It’s a quiet and peaceful resort. (6) One reason we choose Mauna Lani is the resort’s founding philosophy and long-time staff. We get the sense that stewardship of the land and its creatures truly matters. The long-time staff members remember us from year to year and give us the sense we are genuinely being welcomed back. Mauna Lani has a lot of repeat visitors and I think Mauna Lani treats guests quite a bit differently than hotels that do have “good service” and “pamper you” but don’t expect to ever see you again. (7) The bell staff and desk staff are great; most of them grew up on the island and offer good advice about everything ranging from weather to where to look for a watch battery. The “breakfast ladies” at the Bay Terrace each morning are true treasures. The beach staff give excellent, up-to-date advice about water conditions and when the swells will be down or back up. This is particularly important in winter! (8) The top reason we keep coming back, besides the warm and friendly people, is the "spirit of place" that Mauna Lani has—few other Hawaii resorts have the same sense of serenity and peace. The resort is situated in a very special location, where you can see 5 volcanoes—Kohala, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, Hualalai, and Haleakela on Maui, across the channel. If you visit Mauna Lani, be sure to walk the path that winds among the fishponds in early morning or evening, listen to the birds, and absorb the peaceful—and to me, spiritual—ambiance of ponds that were built circa 500 AD. (9) If you stay at Mauna Lani, be sure to go walk among the historic ponds south of the hotel (on the way to the Beach Club) and go see the Puako Petroglyphs (north of the Fairmont Orchid, trail starts at Holoholokai Beach Park). May be the best spot on the Big Island in terms of natural assets. Superb beach, photo opts everywhere, fish ponds, walking paths, etc, etc. Architecture is also a superlative. But get out your wallet this place does not come cheap. Then add a $25.00 resort fee as the cherry on top. More>

Annual Return of the Migrating Iowans

We have an annual conference in Hawaii every January. Coming from Iowa this is the perfect time of year to get away from the cold. We have been staying at the Mauan Lani for the last three years. The hotel has a very warm Aloha spirit that comes from everyone at all levels. We were delighted to find our housekeeper was Carol and the Gift Shop was staffed by Dru. They remembered our names from last year, as did the front desk staff. Access is easy from the highway up from the airport and parking is usually easy, either valet or self-park. The golf courses are well kept and challenging. The beach and reef areas are nice and the Ocean Front Grill is relaxed and fun to be at. The rooms are mostly updated although some of the mountain or "parking lot" view rooms seem a bit dated. The economy or ownership may be slow yet as we noticed that the grounds were not kept up as well as previously. The aquaculture ponds were again fascinating and the pools were all now finished and very nice. One large main poos and several smaller pools/hot tubs around the deck area. Plentiful towels, covers and beach cabanas were available. The low cost or free snorkel equipment and small reefs on the main beach are a hidden gem. We avoided eating at the rather pricey canoe House restaurant and instead stocked our room with provisions from he nearby Foodland store at the Shops at Mauna Lani Center. Access to nearby attractions and the adjacent Waikoloa Beach area and Village are easy and convenient. We will keep coming here as long as the spirit remains inviting. More>

LOVED IT

From the check in at the front desk to everything in between, it was just the best spot for us for a truly memorable vacation. We had an ocean front room, and it was just amazing. The view, watching people walk by -- but everyone far enough away to not be noisy at all. Could hear only the surf and an occasional neighbor. There was not one hiccup in the whole trip. We had everything provided for us, from ice waiting for us daily when we returned to our room, and everyone was friendly to us, unlike when we went to Maui. Out of all the places we visited to check out, we are very happy we chose this spot over the Mauna Kea or Fairmont Orchid. But that's just us -- this place is totally our speed. We loved the layout, and how we could wonder around and see a manta ray, turtle or tropical fish swimming in the meandering water features all over the property. The food was good, and there were many options. The only thing we did not like was the coffee cafe; the service was terrible and the drinks were worse. One of the servers made us the worst bloody mary ever, and she didn't seem to know what she was doing, very unorganized (and we were the only customers). There was live music by different musicians every night at the outdoor bar, and we heard some great stuff. One of the performers, Joe Conti, plays what is called a Stick, and he was so talented it was ridiculous -- check it out at JoeConti.com. Every night was a new and fun experience, and the people at this resort, including the other patrons, are down-to-earth and fun. The beach in front of the resort is like a lagoon, and easy to swim in (recommend foot protection from the lava). There are several pools and hot tubs, one of the hot tubs is salt water. The place is very well maintained and the rooms are very clean. We will go back again for sure. More>
