Wonderful place to stay!

After our careful review process of TripAdvisor ratings on Kona area hotels, Mauna Lani received one of the best ratings. We booked our stay as a vacation package from May 2, 2013 - May 10, 2013. After our arrival and the complimentary valet, we were presented with leis, delicious juice, and a refreshing moist hand towel upon check in. Quite nice after the long flight! Without request, our hotel associate upgraded our mountain view room to an ocean view room. Fantastic! The staff was always friendly and helpful. The grounds were expansive and the resort offered complimentary snorkel gear and beach cruiser bicycles. The layout of the hotel did a great job to incorporate the outdoors with the fish ponds that run through the complex and the feel of the atrium while walking to your room. The room was recently renovated and may have been the nicest I have ever stayed in. It was a large room with high ceilings and a lighted ceiling fan, mini fridge,complimentary bottled water/wi-fi, and a plethora of heavenly pillows on the bed. Housekeeping did an amazing job to always make the room clean, neat, and replenished with new towels. Cotton swabs and pads, too! I loved the shower. Ahhhhhhhh.... This resort offers a great beach that is good for swimming and snorkelers should continue further out for a variety of fish and turtle sights. I wish I would have spent more time in the hammocks on the beach (great for nightly star gazing), but enjoyed the shaded, padded chaise lounges while drinks and delights were served to us from the hotel restaurant, Terrace Bay. The beach here is very nice and one of the best on the island (Hapuna Beach w/$5 parking fee has waves that knocked me down, instead try Kua Bay (calmer, clearer water with great snorkeling) if you feel the need to see more.) This isn't a complaint, but more of an eye opener for those using a rental car. There is a daily parking charge of $18 regardless of valet or self park. I have seen this with other hotels I've stayed in while on the islands of Hawaii. I rated this resort as four stars, not five, due to three negatives of our stay. (1) I found the mattress to be too firm for my back, which was painful for me to get out of in the mornings. (2) Our room was on the third floor and when we left the grounds, we would need to take the elevator down to the first floor, then walk up a flight of stairs to exit through the front entry. The way the building was constructed, the front entrance truly sits on the second floor and with its tall ceilings, it uses part of the third floor, thus the elevators near the front desk only services floors 4-6. For our stay, it seemed silly to walk down a flight of stairs to the ground floor and then take an elevator up to the third to access our room. (3) We did not contact management and resolved this on our own, but we had an issue on a couple of nights that tiny bugs came down from the bathroom ceiling and we found a few had made their way onto the bed. Over all, this was a great place to stay!

My husband and I just stayed six days at the Mauna Lani and we loved it. The property is uniquely beautiful with gardens and preserved ancient ponds stocked with beautiful tropical fish, manta rays, and tortoises. The hotel structure is very open, well set in its environment and lacks pretentiousness. It is not contrived or touristy but very comfortable. The staff is mostly Hawaiian and I cannot rave enough about how friendly and helpful they were from the moment we arrived until we left! We decided to upgrade our room to oceanfront on the sixth floor as they offered us a very reasonable rate to do so and we had a large room on the sixth floor dead center on the beach that had gorgeous sunsets. The room was decorated in a understated style with a spacious bathroom, terrace and a nice king size bed.. There is an informal restaurant with a nice outdoor area that serves breakfast. lunch and dinner in which the food is quite good. We didn't dine at the Canoe House, but had an appetizer and drinks at the bar that were also very tasty. Don't miss having a delicious Kona coffee at the Mountain Coffee Bar seated on a sofa in front of the tortoise pond.. What a view! We also checked out some of the other hotels in the Kohala area while we were there and felt that this one suited us best. The Fairmont is right next to the Mauna Lani, but their beach area was quite small small and its grounds not as nice, not to mention its pricer. The HIlton in Waikoloa was too big for us and is akin to Disneyland and the Marriott just wasn't as attractive and had that "hotel:" feel.. Only the rich could afford the Four Seasons. Was also very glad that we didn't stay in the Kailua Kona area as it was too touristy for us . It is, however, not unreasonable to drive from the Mauna Lani to Kona and some points south to take tours or go to attractions. It is also accessible to restaurants in Waikoloa, Waimea and Kawaihae. If you are interested in going to luau, I recommend the one at the Mauna Kea hotel which is pricier than the larger touristy ones in Kona but was intimate and fun with decent food.

Still the best!
