Marriott Kauai Resort and Marriott Beach Club - Ending the Confusion

For those that have read our reviews we believe it is very important to provide helpful information. So hopefully this write-up helps you make an informed decision on whether to make reservations at either or both of these resorts. Our family, 6 couples, stayed at both the Kaua'i Marriott Resort (the hotel) and the Marriott Beach Club (the ownership resort) for 10 days ending May 21st. This is an incredible place to stay, both from a location and resort standpoint, so if you are thinking at staying at either of these please read on: 1. We have seen pictures of the Resort and Beach Club layout on the Marriott website and they are NOT accurate. I have included a picture (#1-Marriott Layout) that hopefully you can expand and see the actual layout. The important item to note is that following: a. The Resort and Beach Club are all connected. There is no road separating the two of them. On the layout those are walking paths. b. There is one main entrance, thus one main parking lot, one place to pull up to unload your luggage, one lobby, and one check in desk for both the Resort and Beach Club c. You unload at the top of the resort and the escalators or elevators will take you down to the one lobby and the beautiful gardens and shops. d. The Resort, not the Beach Club, is made up of 3 towers. Picture an upside down ?U? where the opening of the ?U? will face the Nawiliwili Bay that opens into the ocean. Looking at the upside down ?U? the right side tower is the Ha?upu Tower, the left side is the Nounou Tower and the top of the ?U? is the Kahili Tower. See the Marriott site for a good picture of an aerial view the actual towers. e. For the Resort the Ha?upu Tower has great views of the Nawiliwili Bay (see picture 2 ? Haupu Tower view). f. For the Resort the Kahili Tower which sits the furthest back from the ocean overlooks the pool and direct views of the Nawiliwili Bay as well as an ocean view. g. For the Resort the Nounou Tower although it looks straight across at the Ha?upu Tower they have angled all the rooms so they are also have direct views of the Nawiliwili Bay as well as an ocean view h. The garden view rooms are either facing the back side of other towers or buildings or are adjacent to the side parking lot, although well covered by plants. i. For the Beach Club they state two towers (also called the Villas) there are the Wai?ale?ale Tower and the Kilohana Tower, but in reality the Wai?ale?ale Tower is the 1st three floors and the Kilohana Tower is floors 4 through 12. These sit to the left of the upside down ?U? of the Resort. The Beach Club towers are the closest rooms to the bay out of all of the options available at the Resort and all have direct views of the bay and the ocean, but they are NOT right on the ocean. There is a public walkway, some palm trees and then the public beach, between you and the ocean. j. For those looking to book at the Marriott Kaua?i Lagoons they are NOT connected to either of these resorts and are located a little further away. 2. So what room should you book? a. It depends on how much you want to spend, but regardless ask for an upper floor as the views are better and unobstructed. See the picture of our 8th floor room (819-820), the Kilohana Tower, at the Beach Club (3 ? Kilohana Tower view). For the Ha?upu and Nounou towers ask for a room closest to the bay as these towers are long and of course the views are better the closer they are. b. In the Villas we stayed in a King Suite, which is tow rooms that have an adjoining door, so the King room has a refrigerator and a nice bathroom. The adjoining room is basically the same size and acts as the living room with a couch and separated TV. It also has the Murphy bed, the dishwasher, microwave, toaster, blender, dishwasher, sink, plates, cups, glasses, bowels and utensils. There is NO stove top. And it has the lanai (balcony) that has two chairs and a table. The King room has no area for sitting. Both rooms have two sliding doors that open the entire way to allow the beautiful trade winds in. Our recommendation for anyone that wanted to save some money and the microwave and dishes is to book just the Murphy bed room without the King size bed. We did not try out the Murphy bed but did pull it down to take a look at it and it seemed really nice. See pictures #2 - Murphy Bed and #3 ? Murphy Bed. 3. The resort sits on the public Kalapaki Beach. It is an absolutely beautiful beach and reminds us of Waikiki on Oahu, but on a much smaller and less commercialized scale. Don?t let the term public be a concern it is not ever really busy and seems more like a private beach. See picture #4 Walkway Patio Beach. This is a view from the Beach Club, 8th floor. 4. Marriott supplies plenty of chairs both by the pool (picture #8 and #9) and on the beach for guests and we never had to look to find open chairs even when 6 of us or more would head down together. There are also three beautiful sand volley ball courts on the beach right in front of the Marriott. 5. Duke?s restaurant might as well be part of the resort as it is attached to the Marriott pathways. See picture #5. See our Trip Advisor review of this, as well as Kukui?s and Kalapaki Grill. But the other great part about the Marriott was its walking access to numerous restaurants, not fancy ones, but great food, including several organic and great prices. So a lot of options including the following that we will also write-up on Trip Advisor: Kalapaki Beach Hut, Splash, Feral Pig, Rocco?s, and Papalani Gelato. And yes there is even an ABC store, a smaller one, and again all within a very short walking distance of the Marriott. Both the Anchor Cove Shopping Centre and Harbor Mall, see picture #6, where these restaurants are located at. 6. Walk the gardens at the Marriott as they have a large variety of the different plants, flowers and trees and all are labeled to let you know what they are. The best part is that they are in a beautiful setting right at the hotel with no mosquitos and it is free. See picture #7. 7. See Hawai?i Alive show at the Marriott, I believe it is $35 and is well worth it for a very intimate setting for a true Hawaiian hula show with incredible performers. 8. If you are a coffee drinker and need your coffee in the morning or throughout the day and don?t want to leave the resort the Marriott Terrace Bar that overlooks the pool will sell you a large plastic cup for $35, called the Mahalo Mug. This mug will allow you unlimited refills of coffee or hot tea in the morning. After it closes you can get unlimited refills on any fountain sodas, iced tea or coffee down at the Kalapaki Grill by the pool. These are self-serve so there is no waiting in line. If you have the cup you are good to go. Please note that we are very, very particular about our coffee and the Marriott serves a local coffee called what else but Kauai Coffee and is okay at the best. A much better option is walking down to Papalani Gelato and getting either the Molokini blend or their 100% Kona. If you want a true cup of real 100% Kona Coffee that is smooth and one of the best you will ever have, head up to Kapa?a to Java Kai. They also have an incredible breakfast, pure juice/vegetable smoothies and lunch (organic and some gluten free options). It is only a 12 minute drive and well worth it. 9. Parking ? unless someone in your party has difficulty walking I would suggest utilizing the self-parking. The valet parking is in the same lot and by the time you wait for the valet to get your car you will be on your way. Also note it is more expensive for valet parking and you need to include the price of the tip as well. We did utilize valet a couple of times, when we arrived, and they were very prompt and courteous. 10. Do NOT worry about the airport as you do NOT hear any planes and rarely even see a plane coming in. From a map it would seem that you sit right on the airport, but in reality you would not even know that you were a little over a mile away. 11. Do NOT worry about the cruise ship that comes in to port next to the Marriott. As with the airport you would not even know that it is there as it parks far to the right of any view and does not obstruct anything. You would have to look for it to know that it was there. As far as foot traffic? There was no noticeable difference when it was docked. 12. Also check out the other Kaua'i attractions and restaurants that we reviewed. Some quick hints on what to do: a. Definitely the Kalalua Trail hike. You don?t even have to do the whole hike the first ½ mile will give you the best views, but going down to the first beach is pretty spectacular also. b. Most of our family did the Kanapali Boat/Snorkel trip and the helicopter tour. By far they stated that the helicopter tour is the best option even though it is more expensive. The two main reasons. The waves on the boat/snorkel tour made many of the passengers sick and it was a very nice day out vs. the smoothness of the helicopter. The snorkeling was very poor as there are not coral reefs so you are not missing out.

Second Stay at the Marriott Kauai Resort

This was out second stay at this Marriott in two years. Last time, I gave the property a five, but this time I knocked it down a point because I felt some things were lacking. The disappointing: We arrived with two separate reservations. One was part of a package, and the other was booked with points. When we arrived, we were told that they did not have our king sized room for us for our first reservation, and that we would have to be put in a room with two doubles. We were not happy about this, but they said a room would be ready the next day. We were not really happy about this, but the manager told us that they would merge our reservations so that we would not have to move again. When we checked into the new room (1501), we were very disappointed. It was a small room (compared with other rooms we have stayed at at this resort) and was a little musty. The light in the bathroom kept working and the toilet didn't always flush properly. Despite being a garden view room, there was no view. The bushes were not maintained to the standard of the rest of the resort. It wasn't a horrible room, it just felt a little overlooked. After being shuffled around, and having to check out, then back in again, I would have expected a better room than our original, not a worse one. I probably should have asked for another room change, but to be honest, we ended up not spending that much time in the room anyway. Everything else: Other that that one experience, I cannot complain about this resort. The staff are some of the best hotel staff I have seen anywhere. Everyone is friendly, polite and helpful and really seems to care about doing a good job. One experience that really demonstrated that was one day at Hanalei bay, we ran into our bartender from Aupaka Terrace on the beach on his day. He saw us first, and came over to say hi. I was really struck by that. This time we used the concierge to book our activities. I would recommend using this service, over some of the activity stands you seen in the various markets on the island. The staff at the concierge desk really know all the different activities and don't push one company over another. The breakfast at Kukui's is very good, but it is expensive. Its definitely worth treating yourself, but there are quite a few cheaper options within walking distance off the resort. Duke's was our absolute favorite. Its very reasonably priced at the barefoot bar, and the food is excellent. The main restaurant upstairs is also excellent. Make sure you save room for the Hula Pie! The grounds are very well maintained are are gorgeous! Take the time to wander through the gardens and take it all in. The pool, of course, is the highlight of the resort. It's huge and spacious and heated. We will definitely be back, but next time, we'll be a little more specific with our room request....
