Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus

This was not what I would consider a 5-Star hotel experience. The service was poor, the food was good but my children got sick, and they could not accommodate us properly. On the Apple Vacations website it listed the junior suite as able to room up to 5 people but this was incorrect. When we got to the hotel they told us the room only holds up to 4 people and they brought in a cot which made the room very small and was very uncomfortable. While we were there we were not able to go to our room for a day because they had to fumigate the building because of pests. I would not recommend this resort to anyone and will not be using Apple Vacations to book anymore of my vacations. I plan on calling Iberostar because I feel as if they need to know what is going on.

Went to the beach. When came back found the bathroom door locked. We could not open it. Took 3 calls and 2 hours to have technician come in and unlock the door. The majority of the staff does not understand English. Contacted concierge 3 times to bring a piece of hand soap. First request was ignored. After second request we were brought hangers. After the third one, shower gel. Luckily, we were in the room when the maid brought shower gel and I showed to her what we were looking for.

Good but not excellent

The bed and pillows are like racks-we woke up everyday with neck/back pain. The buffet food was above average. The sprinkled the lawns around 8:30-9 am with stinky water. The beach was excellent. The drinks at the bars were not drinkable, we just drank beer and house wine.

From the moment we walked in the door, the staff at Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus treated us wonderfully. We had requested a king room and had to change rooms after one night because they were full and we wanted to be in the same building as our friends. The food was generous and our Apple contact gave us practical advice and recommended 2 really fun excursions based on our interests.

We've stayed in numerous Iberostar's. This resort is older, maintained well except for the pool area. Pool was clean just old and need of updates. Maid/room service was poor at best. Upon arrival we had a dirty sheet on our bed and used water bottle in our room, hard to feel comfortable after that experience. Restaurant service was wonderful, food good!

I like the colonial feeling of this hotel. When I go to the Caribbean, I want to see the warm colors and fabrics this hotel does so well. Very friendly and hard working staff-one of the beast things here. Beautiful beach/pool. Specialty restaurants were very good-enjoyed El Colonial and La Geisha the most. The food selection and quality at the buffets was only fair. Pasta sauces all need a new recipe! That should be easy to fix. The food should be presented more attractively, especially the salads and hot food. The concierge idea didn't work well for us. The man was very pleasant but he continually hounded us to attend a "presentation" for a timeshare/discount plan that would give him points to make more money. Please! Just pay him more money to leave us alone!

Not what I expected from Iberostar

I booked this stay in the DR after a positive experience at another Iberostar in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Some positives: gorgeous beach, great housekeeping, friendly reception and concierge, and comfortable accomodations. Some negatives: Kid's program did not appear to have a set schedule of operations the week we were there, to the point where we had to complain to reception; lack of variety of food at the dinner buffet service: thank goodness for reservations at the restaurants on premise; and lack of bar and pool service especially since at the Iberostar in Riviera Maya-wait staff at pool/beach was very attentive.

Nice Hotel but no plan to return

The room definitely did not feel like the rating it was given on the website. Our room was fairly small and the air conditioner leaked every day. We had to lay down towels on the floor to keep from falling on the slippery floor. Our room service though was wonderful and we looked forward to the customized "animal" towels. The hotel staff was nice but we did experience some bad moments where we were made fun of at the beach bar for not speaking their language and a general haughty attitude towards Americans. The other foreigners vacationing there were also exceptionally rude. They have no concept of taking turns or how to say "Excuse me". I thought the food in the restaurants was much better than the buffet. The best part of the trip was Dressel Divers. They were wonderful people, friendly and we had an excellent time on the excursions they provided. Overall, the hotel grounds are very pretty, nice pool, great beach, and good location. I just have no desire to return here.

Overall we enjoyed this hotel a great deal. The grounds and pool and Beach for beautiful and very clean and well-maintained. We were surprised by the fact that the majority of the guests were from Europe or South America but we all enjoyed the cultural experience we had because of that. We were a little disappointed in the buffet Foods but overall it was okay. We especially enjoyed the food at the Japanese restaurant and Mexican restaurant. The activities were fun and we had a nice mixture of relaxing and doing fun things. Are children parasail with a partner company on the beach and there were equipment issues that led to dangerous situations resulted in us getting our kids out of the boat and our money back. Overall it was a great experience and we would not hesitate in recommending it to our friends.

Loved this resort. Staff was wonderful, room was perfectly located. We requested rooms close to the pool and beach because one of my fellow travelers has a prosthetic leg. We were given rooms close to everything. The gardens and all the birds were fantastic. No complaints at all. The only negative for me was that there were a lot of very young children in strollers and crying. Not the resorts fault.

We loved the hotel, the staff overall were not friendly or helpful at all. We had to get our own drinks at the lunch facility and flag down staff for anything we needed. The specialty restaurants were 2 hour minimum and the food was mediocre at best. Our apple rep was non existent and never where he was supposed to be. We finally got him two days before we left. The hotel itself is fine, just need to update the attitude of the staff and increase the food quality.

THIS is how a resort should be run

This is a story of three resorts - a terrible one, a decent one, and a great one. We had a trip scheduled to Bayahibe in which we would be splitting our stay across two resorts - The Catalonia Royal La Romana, and then the Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus. But due to issues at the Catalonia, we moved to Dreams Dominicus La Romana. So I am writing three reviews, one for each of these properties. This is the third review, see my separate reviews of the Catalonia Royal and Dreams. We visited IHD (Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus) as the last resort of our stay in Bayahibe. Having just come from Dreams, we found it interesting to compare the resorts. We have stayed at many other Iberostars in the Dominican Republic and in Mexico: Iberostar Paraiso Beach, Iberostar Tucan/Quetzal, and Iberostar Bavaro Suites. We have found that Iberostar gives generally a very good experience at a decent value. Checkin was smooth and efficient. The staff were attentive and very friendly. Numerous staff came by to assist us and they were all smiling and friendly. We requested but could not get a higher floor room on the first day. However we had paid for a superior junior suite, and this was the only resort of the three that gave us the room category that we had paid for. We were placed in building 4 which is right near the beach and main pool. The resort has a typical Iberostar look, which is more cultural than modern. The lobby is clean and gorgeously furnished, the colors in the walkways and buildings are beautiful. The gardens are absolutely gorgeous - this resort is hands-down the most beautiful Iberostar we have seen, and rivals almost any other hotel. The grounds have immaculate gardening with water features, multicolored groupings of plants, well signed and lit walkways, benches for sitting, gazebo, fountains, rock formations, and wildlife - ducks, swans, and a first - turkeys! We were very amused by the turkeys having a meeting at the beach on a couple of mornings. The room was very nice and the bed was comfortable. We had a separate sitting/living room area. There is free wifi throughout the resort and in the room, it worked well but was fairly slow. On day two we went to the lobby to see if we could get a room on a higher floor and they moved us to a room that had an ocean view! Their are two buffets - one near the lobby and one near the beach. The beach buffet was the best we've every seen at an AI resort. Although the serving area was relatively small, the selections were good and the food was fresh and mostly delicious. It was notably better than at Dreams where we stayed prior to the Iberostar. The buffet service was excellent. In general all staff were smiling, polite, and very attentive. Although they do let you get your own drinks, we always had somebody getting our water or other drinks right away. The beach is far, far better than at Dreams. Where Dreams has a sliver of beach and much of that is taken by their "preferred" club, Iberostar has ample width, numerous palapas with plenty of shade available. Even at the pool, they have numerous palapas - this is the best shade availability I've seen at any AI. The nightly entertainment was quite good. The shows had a real live band, and the party on the beach was substantial with a stage, a lit up dance floor, and DJ and food. It's just so obvious how well run this resort is - from the excellent service, the great attitudes of the staff, and the immaculate and beautiful grounds. Huge compliments to the management of the IHD. I'd characterize the Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus as a midrange resort that is just excellently run, while Dreams Dominicus La Romana by comparison is a resort that tries to be better than average (no wristbands, modern decor) but doesn't execute all that well. If you are going to Bayahibe, IMHO THIS is the place to go. Special shout-out for great service at reception from Cinthya, and also from the Bellman Alberto, who took us out to the lobby for our departure. He's been with the resort for 17 years (since it opened), which says something. He, like all the other staff, was friendly and helpful and a joy to interact with.

Very nice resort

We have never seen such big and nicely maintained park, pond, and plenty of birds on resort’s territory. The beach is not large but clean, a lot of "mushrooms" to stay under. The ocean was quiet and clean, snorkeling with banana in hand was fun. Swimming pools were clean and quiet too. Food was tasty and fresh. On the other hand this hotel is for smokers and they do smoke everywhere!

I have heard so much about all inclusive resorts and always wanted to try one. After spending a week here I was not impressed with the whole all inclusive thing....I felt I had to tip a lot during every thing we did...I will say the beach and sand was very nice and the huts and chairs were plentiful. I traveled with 5 other people and we all thought the same. People were really nice and friendly but the liquor was terrible. No light beer, no diet soda, and All drinks were made with the same sour mix and tasted the same. I believe it is not the proof they say it is which was disappointing especially paying what we did for the trip- I believe it would cost you the same for a cruise and get better drinks...I will Stay with cruising over going to another all inclusive. The food looked good but didn't taste the way it looked. I would recommend eating at the beach area - that was the best food in the whole place. When eating in the restaurants there was No dressings for your salads- oil and vinegars only. It was very hot and there is no AC anywhere other than in your room so after dinner our nights ended heading right back to the room so we could cool off. No Sports bar to watch any sports if your a sports buff. I wish I knew better Spanish...It would have helped a lot. The rooms were clean and kept up very nice. The Amstar company that picked us up from the airport and took us to the Resort were awesome. I would travel with them anywhere- we felt very safe with them. Just look for the Blue flowered Shirts they told us and it was a great shirt to locate and recommend them if you need a ride or do any excursion with them.

Since 2003 we have traveled extensively to many all inclusive properties in the Caribbean, Mexico and Jamaica, We stayed at properties owned by Riu, Palladium and Bahia Principe. We have also stayed at many Iberostar properties in Dominican Republic as well as Mexico, including the Grand in Punta Cana, IB. Paraiso Maya (several times), IB. Tucan, IB. Paraiso Lindo, IB. Dominicana, IB. Bavaro (several times)...needless to say, our preference has always been Iberostar. We just returned from the Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus and this property tops them all! We had a suite close to the beach and the view was great. The beach and ocean were absolutely spectacular, Water was so clear and calm! The beach entertainment was also great. There was always something to do. All day the staff went out of their way to accommodate the guests! The suite in building 4 was bit dated compared to the Maya in Mexico or the Grand, there were some issues with a leaky toilet and bathroom door (they were eventually repaired after we complained) which was a bit surprising since we paid a premium, however, what the room lacked, the rest of the property made up for. Stunning architecture, beautiful manicured grounds, Excellent food quality and variety..there was something for everyone, even our fussy 11 year old! . Service throughout the property was top notch. From all the Iberostar properties we have visited over the years this was by far the best, I thought it was even better then the Grand in Punta Cana! It is clear that Staff as well as Management are well trained and highly professional. They care about their guests. Hats off to the Director, he runs a tight ship! I would like to give a huge thank you to Wilkin Beitie, He cooked our Omelets every day and also worked in the Buffet every night...even after a 12 hour shift Wilkin was always singing, smiling and happy! We were so impressed we tipped him on our last day. As a business owner I know how rare it is to have employees with such passion for their job. Day in and day out Wilkin always greeted us and other guests with a big smile and a Hola Amigo!, he was always happy and friendly! I hope management knows what a gem they have working for them, he deserves a huge raise! Not to mention... he makes the absolute best omelet in the universe! Within a week of our return home we booked and paid in full our room for next year. We miss the Hacienda D and cannot wait to return next October!
