Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus

This was not what I would consider a 5-Star hotel experience. The service was poor, the food was good but my children got sick, and they could not accommodate us properly. On the Apple Vacations website it listed the junior suite as able to room up to 5 people but this was incorrect. When we got to the hotel they told us the room only holds up to 4 people and they brought in a cot which made the room very small and was very uncomfortable. While we were there we were not able to go to our room for a day because they had to fumigate the building because of pests. I would not recommend this resort to anyone and will not be using Apple Vacations to book anymore of my vacations. I plan on calling Iberostar because I feel as if they need to know what is going on.

Went to the beach. When came back found the bathroom door locked. We could not open it. Took 3 calls and 2 hours to have technician come in and unlock the door. The majority of the staff does not understand English. Contacted concierge 3 times to bring a piece of hand soap. First request was ignored. After second request we were brought hangers. After the third one, shower gel. Luckily, we were in the room when the maid brought shower gel and I showed to her what we were looking for.

The bed and pillows are like racks-we woke up everyday with neck/back pain. The buffet food was above average. The sprinkled the lawns around 8:30-9 am with stinky water. The beach was excellent. The drinks at the bars were not drinkable, we just drank beer and house wine.

From the moment we walked in the door, the staff at Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus treated us wonderfully. We had requested a king room and had to change rooms after one night because they were full and we wanted to be in the same building as our friends. The food was generous and our Apple contact gave us practical advice and recommended 2 really fun excursions based on our interests.

We've stayed in numerous Iberostar's. This resort is older, maintained well except for the pool area. Pool was clean just old and need of updates. Maid/room service was poor at best. Upon arrival we had a dirty sheet on our bed and used water bottle in our room, hard to feel comfortable after that experience. Restaurant service was wonderful, food good!

I like the colonial feeling of this hotel. When I go to the Caribbean, I want to see the warm colors and fabrics this hotel does so well. Very friendly and hard working staff-one of the beast things here. Beautiful beach/pool. Specialty restaurants were very good-enjoyed El Colonial and La Geisha the most. The food selection and quality at the buffets was only fair. Pasta sauces all need a new recipe! That should be easy to fix. The food should be presented more attractively, especially the salads and hot food. The concierge idea didn't work well for us. The man was very pleasant but he continually hounded us to attend a "presentation" for a timeshare/discount plan that would give him points to make more money. Please! Just pay him more money to leave us alone!

Not what I expected from Iberostar

I booked this stay in the DR after a positive experience at another Iberostar in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Some positives: gorgeous beach, great housekeeping, friendly reception and concierge, and comfortable accomodations. Some negatives: Kid's program did not appear to have a set schedule of operations the week we were there, to the point where we had to complain to reception; lack of variety of food at the dinner buffet service: thank goodness for reservations at the restaurants on premise; and lack of bar and pool service especially since at the Iberostar in Riviera Maya-wait staff at pool/beach was very attentive.

Nice Hotel but no plan to return

The room definitely did not feel like the rating it was given on the website. Our room was fairly small and the air conditioner leaked every day. We had to lay down towels on the floor to keep from falling on the slippery floor. Our room service though was wonderful and we looked forward to the customized "animal" towels. The hotel staff was nice but we did experience some bad moments where we were made fun of at the beach bar for not speaking their language and a general haughty attitude towards Americans. The other foreigners vacationing there were also exceptionally rude. They have no concept of taking turns or how to say "Excuse me". I thought the food in the restaurants was much better than the buffet. The best part of the trip was Dressel Divers. They were wonderful people, friendly and we had an excellent time on the excursions they provided. Overall, the hotel grounds are very pretty, nice pool, great beach, and good location. I just have no desire to return here.

After hours of TripAdvisor reviews, we chose Iberostar Hacienda Dominicas for our family (kids - 22, 21, and 17) vacation. We arrived on 12/24 and left on 12/31. One of our top three vacations. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and plentiful. The food was excellent and varied. The buffet had a variety of choices at each meal. Lunch and dinner had meat, fish, and pasta. All of the prior could be cooked to your specifications. Meats included pork chops, rib eye, lamb chops, burgers, etc. There was an extensive salad bar, multiple types of bread and rolls, and soups at lunch and dinner. Desserts were excellent, varied, and never-ending. Eggs, French toast, pancakes, omelettes, fruit, rolls, muffins, etc. I was very impressed by the amount of staff. Wine, drinks, water refilled multiple times during every meal. The grounds were spotless. Four flamingos, a majestic swan, ducks, and 15 - 20 peacocks roamed throughout the property. The steakhouse and the French restaurant were our favorite specialty restaurants. The steaks, cooked to order at the steakhouse, were delicious. There were plenty of chairs at the beach, but people often "saved" the chairs close to the water overnight by leaving items on them at the end of the day. The pool was spotless. Every morning multiple staff cleaned the sides and vacuumed the bottom. Highlights included the "foam" party in the pool, paella cooked on the beach with lobster tails, shrimp, and mussels, massages at the spa, drinks at the lighthouse bar, feeding rolls to the fish on the pier, and yoga on the beach. The only negative was the WiFi. At times it did not work in the room, however, it was always strong in the lobby. Being able to speak Spanish is a significant advantage though all of the staff do understand and can communicate in English. It was our first all-inclusive family vacation. We are not drinkers, but were asked multiple times throughout the day on the beach if we wanted a drink. The refrigerator is re-stocked daily with bottled water, sodas, and beer. Staff was extremely grateful for tips, but there was no difference in the service if you did not tip. The temperature of the ocean and pool were similar. Cool, but you acclimated to it within a minute. Sunsets were spectacular. Saw the "green flash" one night. We are looking forward to returning as soon as possible. The vacation was a "cruise on land". They take care of everything, you relax, rest, eat, and enjoy.

Excellent choice for families

Traveled to Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus (IHD) as a large family group, ages 12 to 81. Our impression about the resort is very positive. In our opinion, this resort is good for: families with children of any age.. In our opinion, this resort is not so good for you if you are looking for a major non-stop party spring break atmosphere or a crowd of singles. Getting there: JHD is 1.5 hours away from the airport of Santa Domingo and less than an hour from Punta Cana. A taxi ride from each will cost ~$100-140, one way. For a larger groups, book the ride online through Transfers.DO website. Taxis here are safe, professional and friendly. Visit to the airport bathroom before departure is a good idea Resort itself : Typical for Iberostar chain, IHD isn't a high-rise. It consists of two parallel rows of three-store courtyard buildings going from the reception halls towards the ocean. Between them there are wonderfully landscaped grounds with ponds, fountains, gardens and swimming pools, inhabited by free roaming peacocks, flamingoes and swans. Rooms: Your room will be assigned at arrival on 1st-come-1st-served basis, so you can ask for a floor you prefer, and a building of you choice ( look at the resort’s map for that). If you want to be close to the beach, ask for a room in the buildings 7 or 4. Room are clean, spacious, and have hair dryer, refrigerator with drinks ( incl. in your all-inclusive package), a safe box and nice balcony. Bed and pillows may be not the top of the line but in general good. Beach and pool: IHD has broad if somewhat short nice beach which can get somewhat crowded. It is sandy, clean and well maintained. Sea is warm and shallow, with moderate waves. No jellyfish, seaweed, sea urchins, mosquitoes or other pests. There were no problems getting towels or beach chairs. IHD has a beachside massage center, bar and ice-cream stand – all free . In front and to the left of the little lighthouse there is a small artificial reef; snorkeling there on a calm day will show you some common reef fishes. Be very careful in windy weather around these hard sea-urchin-studded rocks. Guests : Mostly families, many with young children of pre- and school ages. Many Europeans of all nations, and good number of Canadians, Americans and Russians. IHD didn’t appear to be a major center of the spring-break atmosphere , at least during the winter vacation period when we were there. Food. No complaints. In general all-inclusive resorts are not known as unique culinary experiences, but IHD has large, convenient, fresh, diverse buffets with many tasty choices. New Year feast was excellent. The evening theme menu restaurants (all free) we tried were OK but in my opinion nothing you don’t find at home ; When compared to buffets they may be not worth the time if you are with young children. Staff : No complaints. The staff is polite, helpful and friendly. Their English level ranges from rudimentary to very good, and even a few symbolic words in Spanish by you are greeted with appreciation. We tipped our maid $2-3/day, and occasionally the waiters, bellman & barkeepers. IDH has Kids Club but our children are too old for it and I can’t comment on it. Entertainments: In our opinion, the evening shows by the resident dancers and singers were ranging from OK to very good. IHD also has a kid’s show at 8:30 pm, always a hit. Day trips: We took a snorkeling trip to Catalina Island and have mixed opinion about it. The snorkeling was good but not exceptional by Caribbean standards; and unfortunately all the available tours to Catalina and Saona seem to be the whole-day affairs involving multiple stops and transfers so you end up spending an hour in the water and 3-3.5 hours waiting in lines and getting from one point to another. Catalina has a small cute beach but it actually isn’t better than the one of IHD. I am not sure if it is worth your time and money. Weather : Christmas-New Year week with a few short showers but with an exception of one rainy morning in general it was a good beach weather. March/April is probably an ideal time to go in the spring. A few useful odds and ends : If you run out of simple supplies (sunscreen, batteries, Kleenex, toothpaste etc.) and don’t want to pay a triple price at the resort’s shop, check out small souvenir stores of the public beach steps away from IHD. Haggle aggressively over the price of any item there. Bring at least 3-4 bathing suits in addition of what you would normally take : in this humid climate, it may literally take days for a hanged wet b. suit to dry out. IDH has a decent wifi which works even at the beach. US dollars are happily accepted, no need to exchange money; bring a lot of cash, especially $1 bills you’ll use for tips.

Enjoyed the hotel, food was exceptionally good, rooms where nice but not 5 star by a good bit...room 5016 had musty smell. That said they where clean, beds where comfortable and gave a good nights sleep. Staff was great and special thanks to Yefrey and Lenny whom we really enjoyed. I would definitely recommend this facility and would return again without hesitation. Dressel divers was horrible!!! dangerous and literally should be removed from business! My daughter filled out application for dive certificate and noted asthma on form. They gave her another to fill out again and told not to list or they could not enroll her. Angela did this and her boss Vincent is aware of this practice. Refused a refund and offered a credit. Hope someone doesn't get hurt of worse before changes are made. Rules for this are they should have declined her application and required a doctors approval prior to putting her through class.

Super friendly and accommodating staff

My family and I had a wonderful vacation here. We were treated like royalty! The staff always welcomed us and went above and beyond our expectations. One guy behind the fruit stand, I think his name was Wilkin Beitie, sang for me when I was there. Unforgettable! Thank you everybody!
