10 Days Not Long Enough!
barb111, Warwick, Rhode Island
Mon May 02 09:30:48 EDT 2016
We stayed at Couples Negril for 10 days from 4/16-4/26. And 10 days was definitely not long enough. We used Mobay for arrival and departure and was glad we had. The line at immigration and customs was long. We arrived at the Couples Lounge and checked in and were told we had about 20 minutes for the Mobay Lounge before our shuttle left. We went in for about 10 minutes. Long enough to grab a drink, food, a bottle of water and use the restroom. When we went back to the Couples Lounge, our luggage was not there. They had already loaded it and was on its way to the shuttle. 20 minutes it was not. We had to run and find the man with our luggage cart and he was not happy. We had to identify our luggage and hold everyone up. The ride was fine, not in the least scary and very informative. No one needed or wanted to stop. We arrived at CN around 1:45 and check in was quick as we were greeted with champagne, a cool towel and a clip board to complete and give $300 credit card deposit. We were told to go have lunch and return. At 3pm, our room was still not ready, so we grabbed our bathing suits out of our carryon luggage and went to the pool. At 4:30, we had our room in requested building 5, 2nd floor instead of 3rd, but we were actually happy we got 2nd in the long run. The room was very clean and the luggage arrived within minutes. The requested mini bar items within the half hour. This was the only time the entire stay where we felt like a tip was expected. Both gentlemen lingered just a bit too long. We abided by the policy and did not tip during our stay and received excellent service. We actually saw no one tip. Room 5204 had a nice view of the ocean and is a short walk to anything. We ended up using the beach near building 9, near the wedding venue and walking to the room was still quick. Breakfast was great every morning. Nice variety and a serve yourself Bloody Mary and Mimosa Bar. Plus, fruit and vegetable smoothies and fresh coconuts. We varied where we ate lunch between the grill, veggie bar and buffet. We ate dinner at all the restaurants, except Cassava when it was a buffet. We ate in Otaheite twice. Our favorite was Helloncia and our least was Lychee. And, yes. There are cats in and around Cassava, but they are very skittish and won’t bother you unless you engage them. We chose not to go on the Catamaran as we booked a private cruise. We had massages in the treehouse, a private dinner in the garden gazebo and utilized the kayaks. We did the snorkeling trip once, also. It rained briefly twice and it poured one morning. Spent time in the hot tub during the rain or in the pool. We saw Donovan daily on the beach and in the Piano Bar. He is as fabulous as described and we did bring him some guitar strings. The beach vendors and musicians are all very nice and a simple no works. They begin to know who is interested and who is not and will just say hello to you and move on. There were large groups there when we went. They were all fine except for one on the beach that felt they need to swear loudly, call others names and wrestle with one another. Felt like a frat party! We moved away and let them do their thing, but it was frustrating to have to move as to not hear them. Groups in the pool were loud but having fun and nothing like this one group. There were plenty of chairs at any time of day and even shade. Casino night was fun as was the auction. We also attended the Bon Fire one night. Overall, we loved our stay and would love to return. Housekeeping and turn down service was good. We had one day that the room was not cleaned and one that they came at around 5pm. Otherwise; it was done by early afternoon. Check out was easy and the credit card hold was released in less than 48 hours. The ride back to the airport was smooth and Club Mobay had a nice lounge to wait in. The only negative was after our first few days, a new group of people who knew each other had rooms underneath ours. There was a lot of cigarette smoking which didn’t allow us to sit on our balcony when we wanted and they were loud at times, very late. We only asked them once at 1am to be quiet as one was on face time, being very loud. Otherwise, they were only enjoying themselves. It was the constant smoking that bothered us More>

Our First Time to Jamaica-

We went to Jamaica this year on our vacation out of desperation. We love everything about Mexico (especially the travel time, value for the dollar and service), but have become very tired of the excessive seaweed on the beaches. We are beach people through and through. With Mitch Toren's help at TripGuy.com, we decided to try Couples Negril for 11 days from April 14 to 24. In a big way, we solved the beach problem. This was the cleanest, calmest ocean water we have ever seen. However, as expected, we also found some negatives...or at least some areas in which Jamaica suffers in comparison. While we will return to Jamaica and the Couples resorts, we will also be heading back to Mexico for some of the things no one seems to do better than the Mexicans. The Beach: Extremely clear, clean water. Perfect white sand and the bottom had zero rocks. Amazing. However, it was almost too calm. Unless the wind is "up" due to weather, the water is as calm as your swimming pool. It almost doesn't feel like the ocean. You don't "hear" the ocean in the same way when there is surf. My wife loved being able to lay on a raft in the ocean and not worry about drifting, undertow, etc. However, I saw that as a bit of a negative. The water is only chest deep at the deepest point of the roped-off swimming area. If you want to body surf, you will be disappointed. If you want clear, clean and CALM, you've definitely come to the right place. Food: We found the food to be really good. There are 4 restaurants, including one that is reservation-only. The others were easy to get into and a buffet was available most of the time. We found out that there is no real room service, though, and we do love utilizing room service one or two nights during our stays. We always stick pretty close to the available seafood on trips like this. Our experience is that beef is sketchy at best in seaside resorts, but they are very good with seafood. All seafood choices were quite good, in our opinion. They seemed to have top-shelf liquor, but we are tequila people and they don't offer any of the sipping tequilas we like. Oh well, nothing to do but try out the rum drinks and Red Stripe. Rooms: These were again better than advertised in the reviews we had looked at. We saw lots of comments about old, tired, needs coat of paint, etc. We just didn't see that. The colors used at this resort are muted. You won't see the grandiose surroundings, hugeness, or gaudy colors you would see in a Mexican resort. However, we thought our room, though a bit small, was one of the nicest we have ever stayed in on vacation. The design and layout of the rooms is well thought out. There is lots of room for clothes in drawers and closets. While the room might be a little small, the furnishings are not oversized. We were able to easily find places for all toiletries, wet swimsuits, etc. We were very comfortable and the rooms are better than some of the reviews we read prior to going. Nightlife: Not a strength. In Mexico, we are able to sit outdoors on a great patio, listen to live music, dance a little and smoke a good cigar. In Jamaica, there is one smoking section and it is a good distance from any of the entertainment. We did not expect that. As a.result, we ended up hooking our bluetooth up on the balcony most nights and listening to our own music. Ironically, we noticed numerous times hotel guests lighting up their doobies all around the resort. We don't have any complaints about that; it just seems ironic that you can't light up a cigarette or cigar anywhere except for 4 tables on the far side of the pool. Last thing: something to be aware of is that they are in the process of building a brand-new resort next door. In general, there were no issues except when it came time to use their jackhammers to break up rock, concrete, etc. That got really loud but, to be fair, it was only a distraction one of our days. We would highly recommend Couples Jamaica to anyone who wants a break from the seaweed in other parts of the Caribbean...just be aware of other tradeoffs you will be making. More>

Loved it

We had a fantastic time here again. The food and drinks were excellent as usual, with a big variety of everything for everyone no matter what type of diet you are on. Regular, Vegan, or Vegetarian. I looked forward to drinking Blue Mountain Coffee but this resort doesn't serve it here. I spoke to other repeat guests and they said the same thing. You sure can tell the difference in the flavor and smell of it. If you are a coffee drinker it makes the ambiance of the resort even better. This was an awesome trip. It's in Bloody Bay and it's great to take a walk down the beach and meet some of the locals selling their merchandise. We met a lot of nice people there. More>

From the start to finish--this trip was totally awesome. We were highly recommended to visit Couples, Negril from 3 different people,so we made the decision to go to Couples Resort for our 30th wedding anniversary. Smaller resort than expected but it was incredible. I do like to hear a little bit of music, we asked for them to turn the music up. I cannot wait to go back!! More>

We spent a few nights here and ended up moving to the Grand Lido Negril. The food was ok and so was the service, but it was crowded and we had to wait longer than expected for drinks, food, towel service, etc. In all, it was a good value for what we paid and the location could have been better.
