Poor management
Jul 13 2016
The hotel needs a lot of TLC! The employees are not that friendly, if you don't speak Spanish you get waited on last. My sliding door wouldn't lock, they fix it but it was broke again the next day. The pools were dirty. Dirty dishes were around the pools constantly. Food in buffet was always just luke warm and had no flavor. I spoke to other people and they were very upset with the resort. Overall, not a very good experience for it being my first time to PVR. I would not recommend this resort to clients. I had issues with Alaska Airlines. I had a bag with 3 bottles of Tequila, all in bubble wrap and the bag had a very large label on it that said FRAGILE, but they broke my bottle and ruined my bag. Not very impressed with this trip!

The first room they gave us unacceptable. Move to a different room which was better but the beds were extremely hard! Very noisy in the hallways had to complain to the front desk on 3 different occasions. As for the food breakfast and lunch were pretty good and dinner buffet was a little below average. The pool deck, pools and beach front were excellent. The hotel location was no more than a 5 min. walk to the downtown area was an added bonus.

Poor rooms, good beach

The hotel has outdated poor quality rooms. Water pressure in the shower is very poor. Concierge was outstanding, front desk staff very good. Food quality was ok; nothing special. Many employees in the restaurant, but not all, just didn't seem like they were motivated or cared. Hotel location is good, and beach area is fine. Maid service was also very good. I will probably not stay at this hotel again

We were super impressed with the Buenaventura resort, excellent staff, delicious food, and location that boasted a great beach and a very close walk to town. Only downfall was there was no volleyball while we were there.....but all in all a great trip! Was our first all inclusive experience and it was a good one!

Terrific staff, great location but disappointed by internet and maintenance issues
Mar 15 2014
Very attentive staff in the restaurants. Good location near downtown and blocks from the Malacon. Wifi was advertised as included but rarely available. Maintenance issues included patio door that was very difficult to open, cracked vanity in bathroom, and mildew looking stiains on the floor. No hotel details provided at check in. They provide them in the 930 meeting the following am. Had to ask for a lock for the room safe two times. Food was ok but variety was lacking as was some quality (chicken was only thigh and legs). Only experienced one show as

The room was over the kitchen with a view of parked cars. It was noisy we slept with ear plugs. We were told the hotel was 100 % booked so we did not request another room. We are repeat guests but that did not mean anything.

I really liked the hotel, thought it was great and had great services, food, etc. My only complaint is in terms of the food, we would have enjoyed more Mexican food, seeing as we were in Mexico, as well as guacamole being self-serv.

An Unforgettable Honeymoon!
Sara D,
Thu Jan 18 09:08:44 EST 2018
My husband and I have just arrived back home in Vancouver BC after an incredible 2 weeks at Buenaventura Grand to celebrate our honeymoon! It's tough to trade the warmth and sunshine for the cold and rain :) This was my second time visiting beautiful Puerto Vallarta (first time at Buenaventura), and my husband's first time in PV...and as we kept saying to each other throughout our trip, it really was the best vacation ever! The resort itself is small, and it is older, but it's well maintained, and very clean. From check-in to check-out, we were treated like family by everyone we met! Our room (Honeymoon Suite) was perfect for us, and the king bed was extremely comfortable. The ladies that cleaned our room always did an excellent job, and our mini-fridge was kept well stocked with bottled water, cerveza, and cans of soda. The food was also excellent. I honestly don't understand all the negative reviews about the food! Frutas y Flores (main buffet) had lots to choose from, and the staff were constantly bringing out fresh food, so nothing was left sitting in warmers for too long. I recommend the Sunset Restaurant for lunch – the al a carte & gourmet burger menus were fantastic (highly recommend the fish/shrimp tacos, smoked marlin burrito & the surf and turf burger). The two reservation-only dinner restaurants – Sunset & Corazón Contento – were both excellent, and a nice change of pace from the buffet. If you only make one reservation during your stay, make it the Seafood night at Corazon – the best meal of our whole trip! No complaints about the pool area either, other than I recommend wearing water shoes in the main pool, as there are some loose tiles that can be quite sharp (it definitely needs to be re-tiled). The location is also a big plus. There are amenities all around (the bank is close if you need pesos, and the numerous Oxxo convenience stores have good, cheap alcohol if you want to have drinks in your room), and you're on the Malecon in under 15 minutes. Most importantly, I want to give a huge THANK YOU to Ricardo. He absolutely sets the standard for service at Buneaventura, and helped make our vacation that much more enjoyable. Also thanks to Francisco, Eduardo, and Germaine, who always went above and beyond for us. Thanks also to the concierge Jessica, who took great care of us and always made sure we had dinner reservations, etc., and Pancho & his Activities crew who were always entertaining. At the end of the day, your vacation is as good as YOU make it. I'm sure if you try, you could find things to nitpick and complain about, but why? You're literally in paradise, and every person on staff works very hard (for very little) to make people happy, every day. A little graciousness, gratitude, and a good attitude goes a long way! For anyone looking for information on accessibility for people with disabilities/mobility issues, I give this place a solid 8/10. I have CP, so my balance and coordination isn't the best, but I didn't have any major problems (my husband is also an excellent 'portable railing' when needed!). Some notes: -There are stairs here and there, but almost all areas had an accompanying ramp. -The stairs up to each floor all have railings except for the first flight. No railings or anything to hang onto, unfortunately. The 2 elevators, while small, are fast. -there are 4 stairs leading into Corazón Contento, no ramp. -The Shakti spa is also not accessible – you have to go up a fair number of steps to get up there. There is no built-in railing, but there is a ledge to hang on to on your way up and down. -The main pool is the only pool with stairs. The others have ladders only. One word of caution about the main pool, however, is the final step. There are about 4 shallow steps into the pool with a railing, and then one big step down (about 2-3 feet). Getting in wasn't bad but getting out was a bit of a challenge. -The cement around the pool area got quite slippery when wet. I recommend sandals or water shoes if you have issues with balance like I do. -The chairs and lounges are placed very close together. Don't be afraid to move things around to make space. -There are a few steps to get down onto the beach, but there is a railing. -The walk to the Malecon is easy. The sidewalk is large and flat, with ramps to get down to street level. As you get closer to the older parts of town, the curbs get higher, and the cobblestone streets are pretty rough. Other notes: -After going through customs at the airport, you'll see a sign for transportation. Before you can exit the airport, you'll have to walk through a 50-ft room with people lined up on either side. I call this the “timeshare gauntlet.” JUST KEEP WALKING AND DON'T STOP. They will lie and say that they are from your hotel, they will have clipboards and will claim that the only way you can book transportation is through them, they will shout after you and make you feel like you're doing something wrong. JUST GET OUT. Once you're outside the airport, find the person holding the sign for your airline, and you're on your way! -When you arrive at the hotel, you'll be given a bunch of useful info, which will then segue into them wanting to “schedule” you for breakfast. This is their way of inviting you to their Vacation Club presentation. If you're not interested, just say so – although they will probably offer you some discounts and a free city tour if you do agree to attend. -they seem to be making small cosmetic upgrades here and there, but the major construction is finished. -If you like to sleep in, be aware that there is not a lot of sound-proofing. Try asking for a room as far back from the pool as possible, but even then...(I'm looking at you, 9am Zumba ladies!!) -The competition for seating in the adults-only section is pretty fierce. People will get up at 5/6/7am to claim their spot. -If you don't see any bacon at breakfast, just ask -El Barracuda (next door to Bunaventura & accessible from the beach) is awesome. The food is great and very reasonably priced. Gracias Bunenaventura! We can't wait to come back <3 - Joe & Sara (The Viking and his lady with the blue hair)

Expected More...An Overall Disappointment

Overall our biggest disappointment was with the food. BGH has a very limited buffet and the 2 additional restaurants on site also leave a lot to be desired. The preparation is very pedestrian and the flavours all seem to lack any taste, they're blah and drab. The drinks were a hit and miss most of the time tasting watery or overly sweet and the 2 wines are syrupy. This place is fine for nouveau travellers with little experience, unfortunately we've seen and tasted so much better throughout the world. The entertainment was poor, the whole time we were there we kept thinking we'd have been better off somewhere else and ventured into town most days and evenings. The spa was a poor excuse they couldn't even pull off our manicures and pedicures. Our room although facing the ocean with a view didn't receive any sun, it's a poor design, so we had to forfeit using it since we were there for the sun. The previous reviews are misleading, so I hope we can spare discerning travellers in the future from making our mistake of choosing it. Best avoided, we won't be returning.

Stayed here three nights. Our room faced the street and did not have a balcony. It took 10 minutes for the shower to produce warm water. Very noisy place. Pools were nice but they played weird techno music constantly. The best thing is that they do have good bars. Whatever you want. Worst thing is the food. Many choices, most of them poor. Fortunately, you can get hamburgers on the beach. After eating there the first night, we chose to forgo the all-inclusive and eat our dinners elsewhere. Been going to PV for over 40 years and, for value for your buck, this was not a good choice for us.

So much fun!

This was one of our best times in Puerto Vallarta! We've stayed several times in small and large resorts, but never in the city of PV - always in Nuevo Vallarta or Bucerias. We tried something new this time by staying in town, and we were NOT sorry. It's a smallish resort, but with all the amenities. We liked the smaller venue because we would see the same guests each day and made some vacation friends, which always adds to the experience. We are beach people as opposed to pool people. I've seen comments about the beach being too rocky, but it was wonderful. The rocks are manageable - just bring some water shoes if you want to go for a swim or a long walk down the beach. Even without the shoes, the beach is undeniably beautiful. Regarding the food - buffet breakfasts were delicious with something for everyone. We ate in the inside restaurant one night - it was different, but good. What a great opportunity to try something new! We ate in the outside restaurant one night - delicious and don't miss the Spanish Coffee (quite the show!). For lunch every day, our amazing servers (Fausto and Eduardo (?)) brought us whatever we wanted - in addition to knowing our drink preferences and bringing them without even asking all day long. Some tips: There is a pharmacy across the street where you can get sunscreen, so don't need to pack any. The drinking water is FINE, so ignore all those warnings from your well-meaning friends and family. Tips for staff of the resort are always welcome. Be kind to the staff - they work so hard, and always with a smile. There is a bank with ATM about 100 steps from the front door of the resort - get some Mexican $$ there and get better deals (most places take USD, but you get a better deal with Mexican $$). The bus is right by the bank/ATM- take it to El Rio BBQ for a fantastic afternoon. The Wifi is sketchy, but this is a time to disconnect! Don't bother with taxis around downtown - it's walkable and safe and you'll get to absorb more of the magic of Puerto Vallarta if you go slow. There are travel warnings about Mexico, but just taking reasonable care like you would in any city in your home country will assure a wonderful vacation in one of the most magical cities in the world. I saw lots of reviews mentioning construction noise. They've moved far enough along that any disruptions were incredibly minor. The view from our room (1205) was not impressive, but all I did in there was sleep, shower, and change clothes. The room was clean, the shower was big, everything worked like it was supposed to, but sometimes the water pressure in the shower was low. All things considered, this was a great value, a fantastic experience, and I can't wait to go back!
