Trading Snowbanks for Sandbanks: Our Incredible Week at Viva Fortuna

From -20°C to Paradise: An Unforgettable Escape to Viva Fortuna Beach After escaping an epic Toronto snowstorm, we landed in Freeport on Saturday the 24th for a week-long getaway. It was the ultimate "change your location, change your life" moment. Trading -20°C for the tropical breeze of the Bahamas was exactly the soul-recharge we needed. The Arrival & Room The transfer from the airport was a breeze (only 20 minutes!), and the lobby felt cozy and welcoming from the start. A massive thank you to Guadalupe for the perfect oceanfront room upgrade—it truly made our trip magical. The room was clean and spacious with a million-dollar view of the Atlantic that we’ll never forget. The Beach & Water The beach is spectacular—think sugary, white-powder sand and water in every shade of blue and green. The snorkeling at the nearby reef was incredible; we saw plenty of fish and even had a dolphin sighting! • Pro Tip: You can walk down the beach to see the famous swimming pigs, but be sure to bring water shoes for the rocky patches. Dining & Drinks We were very satisfied with the food selection across the resort: • The Mexican Restaurant: Our absolute favorite. We ate here three times! My wife loved the burritos, and the steak was top-tier. • International & Italian: The champagne chicken was excellent and the pizza was a hit. • The Buffet: From omelettes to bacon, everything was enjoyable, but the pancakes were our favorite. • Drinks: The bartenders are friendly and pour a strong drink. The Sands beer is a local must-try! (Just a heads-up: they don’t have blenders for frozen drinks, so leave the mudslide cravings at home and enjoy the beer!). The Heart of the Resort: The Staff The team here is what makes the experience. Tyrone at the Mexican restaurant is a total gem—always working hard with a smile. Ester and Daniel brought incredible energy, and Eva made us feel right at home every day. Pedro is an absolute legend, and Darryl—we’ve never had a better bellman; we miss your laugh already! Memorable Moments Though we didn't catch the main shows, the entertainment staff made every interaction memorable. The highlight? A surprise Karaoke session with my wife that gave us a memory for a lifetime. It was a true pleasure to share this magic with the guests and staff. Thank you all for the care and attention. God Bless! — Mike and Melissa

Overall okay - very old hotel in need of renovation but very beautiful beach

Unfortunately for us, we came during the worst cold front Freeport had had in the last 50 years. We spent a lot of time in our room, thankfully the room had heating. Rooms: you can tell this hotel has not been renovated in at least 20 years. Very very old and to be honest, kind of disgusting. Especially the bathroom. Ours was infested with some weird flying bugs. My husband refused to shower because he was that disgusted. Beach: very very beautiful beach. You can walk a pretty long time both ways. The entrance in water is however very rocky, I definetely recommend water shoes. But you could even see some corals and pretty fish when snorkeling. Look our for the red balls in the water - it’s where the corals are. Only one pretty small pool. Lots of beach chairs, no issue there. Food: the buffet is acceptable. Mostly same food everyday, with slight variations at night time. The a la carte restaurants were very nice. Delicious food and pretty decor, especially the mexican one. Staff: everyone is very polite and nice. No complaints. Activities: there was a foam party one day. There was a show the night before we left, it was nice. We were mostly here to dive, so cannot comment much on that. The diving was so so. The instructor was not great (like he did not care at all) and the dive sites were average as well. We rented a car to explore a little, but there isn’t much to explore on the island. We did try and love conch salad. We wouldnt have rented the car if it werent so cold, we just had nothing to do cause it was so windy at the beach. One HUGE negative point for me is the inescapable smoke smell. No matter where you go, you WILL smell smoke. By the end we had tons of allergy and a cough. Just because of this we would not rebook.

WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!! DO NOT BOOK YOUR TRIP HERE!

WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!!! Don't even bother to have them if they hang up mid call!!! I was in the middle of booking my trip when we go hung up on, they took our credit card information and then the line went silent. When we called back they told us there was nothing they would do! Not even for future dates! Absolutely nothing, only gave us the customer service number. And guest what? HUNG UP ON US AGAIN. NEVER GO TO THIS PLACE!!!! A COMPLETE SCAM.

    Two weeks in paradise

We stayed for two weeks and found the resort to be very accommodating and the staff could not have been more helpful. The beach is very beautiful and expansive with plenty of chairs without being on top of everyone. The buffet was extraordinary and the three à la carte restaurants offered a great alternative. The servers were very knowledgeable about the menus and the variety was exceptional.

    Booking here was a mistake

There was very little fo like about this resort. My wife and i have been to Cuba 9 times and everyone one of those 9 trips were better than this. Workers were friendly and drinks were very sweet (which I like). Other than that, everything else was bad. The food at the buffet was ice cold everyday. Nothing is made fresh in front of you except for omelets at breakfast. Pool was ice cold. No swimup bar so no one in the pool. Hot tub was broke so ice cold. Nothing made sense here. A kid resort but the shows didn't start until 930. The shows were overly loud and some in our group were worried about hearing damage. We asked to be on top floor but they gave us a room on the bottom floor. Reception said no chance of moving up later. The view out of our balcony was of a fence that was covered eith a tarp. No lack of hot water but the shower was either cold or too hot. The shampoo was obviously the same as the crappy handsoap. While we always had a 24/7 snack bar in cuba, here once the buffet closed at 10pm, the 'snack bar' opened at 1130 so a gap. All it was, was cold squares of pizza that was self serve. And the drinks were simply a couple of 2 liters of warm pop that you had to pour yourself. My 7th birthday party had a better spread. Our group had a medical emergency at 7pm at night and the resort doctor would not come in. The doctor was booked to come in at noon or 1 the best day and would not come in early. The only help came when I FaceTimed a cuban doctor who I befriended years ago. Also, we were constantly harassed on the beach to buy stupid crap. We bought some one day and then got hassled again the next day. Every family we met was unhappy here and some plan to come to cuba with us next time. A much better value.
