    Every rose has some thorns

    It’s difficult to write the negative as there are many positives to this resort. However a fine line does exist. We stayed for 4 days February 2020. It is a Ritz Carlton and we didn’t mind the $1500 night as we expected Ritz Carlton service. There is where it falls very short! The hotel has been remodeled beautifully and the rooms are clean and very well done. The staff is very friendly and “willing” to help. But it seems as though there is a lack of training coupled with shortage of staff that make it tip into a 3 star review. Restaurants were terrible experiences. Blue Water was slooow service and lackluster small portion meals. (also out of wine) We witnessed at least 10 plates sent back to kitchen during our nearly 2 hr dinner. Sails was so overcooked and dry, it was inedible and sent back. Coconut cove was the “best” food we had albeit bar food. All restaurants were booked out every day we were there. Given our best efforts to get reservations every day we could not even get into Alloro. Although restaurants were booked, at least half of the tables were empty during our meal at Blue water and Coconut cove. We ate off resort for lack of availability on the property. The club lounge, although stunningly decorated, was overcrowded and food picked over and scarce. Staff was working very hard to keep up, but falling quite short constantly. Club Concierge was friendly and willing to accommodate in reservations but failed all requests but one, and never followed up as promised. We made sometimes 3 trips back to check on status. Orientation should, but did not, include the amenities available. It took us two days to figure out the various cruises coming and going. To late to be booked! The beach was windy the entire time and not comfortable with sand blowing. (Can’t control weather) but one shade tree on the entire beach left for some crowded shade space. (get your chairs early!) We are Titanium Bonvoy and frequent Ritz and other high value properties regularly. I can not say we would return nor recommend Ritz Carlton St. Thomas until they get their staff retrained and up to Ritz Calrlton service expectations.

    President’s Day Weekend Family Visit

    First time back since the hurricane...had visited annually for 7 years straight for kids Feb vacation. Hotel is a 4 star Ritz and would be a 5 star Marriott. If you have any status with Marriott just leave that at home (I’m Titanium). There are no upgrades, no concierge, no late checkouts, no nothing. Save yourself the breath and don’t even ask. If you don’t bring an expectation you won’t be let down. Pros: 1) Did a great job with renovation of rooms 2) Location is second to none. 3) Water sports that come with resort fee are generous compared to other places. 4) Landscaping is beautiful 5) New pool will be awesome. Not open for us. Cons: 1) Staff needs more time to be trained. Be patient. 2) Food is OK and service slow...if you have a young kid that wants food needed to order it an hour ago. You can plan around this.

    Beautiful Resort..not quite ready for prime time

    The location is absolutely beautiful, the rooms are outstanding and the decor is luxurious. The staff is extremely helpful, but, I hate to say, very inexperienced. The restaurants are not up to Ritz-Carlton standards. The hotel is still very much under construction as the noise early in the mornings will testify. There is only 1 pool. The A/C was very loud when it turned on, to the point where it woke us up. There are construction vehicles everywhere and noise all day. The DJ plays the music so loud at the pool overlooking the beach trying to drown out the construction noise, so it is disturbing to those trying to relax at the beach. More like a ‘Spring Break’ atmosphere that should not be part of this gorgeous landscape. I want to say that we enjoyed the week we spent on the beach staring out into the beautiful blue water, but instead of relaxing at a luxurious Ritz Carlton resort for a week at $1250/night, there were only 2 restaurants open, neither of which were worthy of this brand standard, we spent money on taxis at night looking for local restaurants. Both of us have very busy work lives, and we were looking forward to just a week of total relaxation.not taxiing around at night to find a decent meal. There is much more work to be done here at this RC. Club level is mediocre at best. I feel terrible giving this review because the staff really does try hard, but it would take a great deal of improvement before we would return.

    Gorgeous with wonderful staff!!!

    First let me state the obvious: this place is absolutely gorgeous. I love the open-air concept throughout the lobby & common spaces. The breeze is constant & wonderful. The decor is luxurious w/out being stuffy. Being greeted with a rum punch during check in while taking in the sweeping view of the property & turquoise bay from upstairs is SO cool! The water is amazing. That blue you see in movies but not in real life? It's here. Also Hobie Cats, snorkel gear, paddle boards & kayaks (included in mandatory resort fee so use them!). We visited a couple of other beaches during our stay and they had way rougher water. The bay at the Ritz was by far our fave. We didn't eat much on property (we like to sample the local fare as much as possible) but did order the chicken quesadilla twice! Spicy, generous portions & delish. There's a grocery store down the road for basics at decent prices (including wine/beer/liquor), plus a few close restaurants & bars. Nothing within walking distance though. But cabs are quick & affordable. And on that note: we rented a car but never even used it. $ wasted. Unless you plan to really explore the island, don't bother. We had planned to do some exploring, but decided we just didn't want to leave! Some issues we had that should be mentioned: our initial room was baaad (just the location-all the rooms themselves are beautiful). We're Titanium Elite w/Marriot. Highest tier possible. And no upgrade available to water view during checkin. That's understandable-no guarantees-we get it. But this room happened to face the back of construction with crews hanging out, smoking, and arguing/yelling right outside our balcony. Not acceptable, no matter your status with Marriot. That room shouldn't have been an option for anyone, period. However, a few phone calls later & Sylvester made it right. We had a choice between 3 rooms, all with gorgeous ocean views. Just unfortunate we had to waste those few hours initially upon arrival. -The construction: not that bad. They're putting in a great new pool w/a slide & we really weren't bothered in the least (aside from that first room). In fact, I think it's completed by now. Just want to mention b/c other reviews have. -So the island was pretty devastated by two Cat 5 hurricanes, back to back, in 2017. Can you imagine? You'd never know it to look at the Ritz property. However, recovery is ongoing everywhere else -even other high-end hotels. But they've come a VERY long way in the past 2+ years and the residents we spoke to were super proud of the progress. -The music can be annoying pumping from the speakers by the pool when you're trying to fall to sleep by the sound of the waves. It was baaaad loud the first day. Better the next few days. But I read other reviews saying the same thing. Just fyi. Saving the best for last: the STAFF. Particularly Aaron. Charles, too! Aaron made our stay above & beyond more personal. He's got a gift for hospitality, he's smart, genuine, and at his young age, will no doubt go far (but selfishly we want him to stay at this location!). The first day he greeted us as we approached the beach and got us completely set up with awesome shaded chairs & towels and a 'whatever you need' promise. And we had no cash to tip. Not that he expected one! The next day, the same service. And every day after that. He went above/beyond a number of times. Always with a genuine desire to elevate our vacation as much as he possibly could. And he'd also hang out with us IF he had a spare minute and we'd chat about normal stuff. Not only did Aaron take care of us every day (AND everyone else, as we witnessed), but we became friends, and we genuinely miss his company. Charles was a complete delight, also, and we loved chatting with him! He has a happy persona that is infectious and he never failed to put a smile on our face. He also went the extra mile in hospitality every time we interacted. His enthusiasm for his job was apparent. It's personal connections like these that make a vacation trip more memorable, more special, and resonate for a lifetime! Overall, we'd highly recommend this location for a relaxing beach vacay. It has everything you'd want (including a 24/7 amazing infinity pool that we never dipped a toe in). Did I mention the super-friendly stilt walkers? Free cocktails/snacks in the evenings poolside (this happened at least 3 times)? Sea turtles swimming next to your Hobie? Breaching manta rays right in front you as you swim? Local kite surfers doing amazing flips out in the bay? Sister property (the club side) right around the corner that has another gorgeous beach, more pools, food, and hot tubs? And nowhere does it feel the least bit busy, even though we were in the high season? Yep, it's pretty great. Next time we're bringing the kids. Already planning our trip back.

    Not so Luxurious Ritz Carlton

    My fiancé and I are frequent Ritz Carlton vacationers, this was our first time at the St Thomas resort and sad to say it will be our last as well. After reading reviews we understood that the hotel is just starting to come back together after the hurricane/ renovation. Upon arrival to the hotel our check in process was very strange. We were kind of brought around to different areas of the lobby until we were sat down and someone came over to help us. It seemed like staff was unsure what to do with us. We didn't like that our bags were sitting in a pile of other peoples luggage's outside the hotel until our room was ready. (Mind you we absolutely love the Ritz located on cayman island, and all their other properties). Our hotel tour guide was great in showing us around and answering general questions. The view from the resort is stunning in itself. It was pouring our first day so we were looking to browse the shops at the hotel / do anything, however only their jewelry store is open, all the other shops are not yet ready. To my knowledge there is no arcade or really much else to do besides lounge at the pool / beach activities and excursions. Calling concierge the staff wasn't very knowledgeable on what stores are open, which surprised us. (Also we were being called by the wrong last name our entire trip, don't know what was up with that). We had club access where we spent a lot of our time having drinks and munching on snacks - which was nice. Our first night we ate at Bleu-water restaurant, the atmosphere was bland, decor was lacking, it came across like more of a family restaurant less of a romantic feel we were trying to go for being a steakhouse. Our food took over an hour to come out. However our food was tasty. Our next day we reserved a cabana by the pool, which was nice. When we got to the pool area I let staff know we have a cabana reserved and we were told "oh no they are all reserved" I let them know I reserved mine a week before our trip, then I was led to my cabana, which was not set up yet. It was 11am, they rent out from 9am for the day. Service was just ok. The beach is not the most enjoyable due to all the coral / sea grass. This is definitely not a pure white sand beach (Incase that's what you are looking for). Only one pool is open right now, so everyone is congested into one area. There is a slide being built which looks fun for the kids. I highly recommend taking the ferry over to trunk bay beach in St. John, it was the highlight of our trip. That beach is beautiful, pure and memorable. Pros: Staff was very very kind. They can drive you anywhere via golf cart should you choose not to walk. I truly feel bad writing this review because staff is so so nice, however they were poorly trained/ lacking guidance. The room was clean and newly renovated. Bathroom was extremely spacious / perks for water toilet having its own door. The property was beyond beautiful and everything is just a close walk away. Cons: besides everything I mentioned already: bathrobe was dirty with makeup smears. Food not good. Served raw food twice on our trip. Overall we love staying at the Ritz properties, (we love being club level) however there are nicer Ritz carribean locations than st Thomas, they still need to get their act together here a bit to say the least. Nothing to quite rave about just yet. Food options could be better. Service at coconut cove was very strange, my food was raw, food is not Ritz Carlton quality. Room service food quality was not good, plates came dirty and food didn't look pleasant to eat. A Ceasar salad at the ritz should not be salad from a bag with bagged shredded cheese, soggy pieces of bread serving as croutons and bottled dressing. Our room service chicken fingers were completely raw, pink. My husband got sick. The kids can get sick this way.. Where is the ritz quality? This luxury hotel giant is going down hill. No longer luxurious ritz Carlton. Please Bring in a manager and get this place right!
