    Sadly NOT the same as it used to be.

    This was my boyfriends 3rd and my 2nd time at Sunscape Curacao. We traveled exactly 3 years apart down to the week. The first time, we did have some minor issues, but overall it was a very relaxing trip and we were thrilled to be able to return. This time, however, it was clear that it has declined in recent years. While the prices remain steady to stay at the Sunscape Curacao (I believe we paid exactly the same amount this time as we did 3 years ago), the quality of the resort itself is much less impressive now. We purchased a garden view room on an upper floor (last time we ended up being put on the ground floor and the room looked into a sewage system so we tried to avoid that this time). Unfortunately, this time too we were put into a room that looked directly into another resort with what appeared to be either a sewage system, or a very polluted and trash filled, canal below. We immediately went to the front desk to complain and were told that they would move us but not until the next day at 4pm. We did not have hot water that night in the room and the plug system is also weird— there are 3 different kinds of outlets in each room placed in random places. I could not find an American outlet anywhere near a mirror to do my hair and the universal outlet adapter we had purchased did not fit into any of these strange outlets either. We went to dinner at the Italian restaurant around 9pm and it was a ghost-town, not a single other couple dining in there. Needless to say, it was a rough first night. The next day we were moved around 3pm to another room which faced the resort so it was a much better set up, and we could finally unpack our things and settle in. Still no hot water, not even lukewarm, I’m talking COLD. We went to dinner at the Grill around 9pm and were given a pager because there was a 30 minute wait. We had a good dinner, service was a bit slow and we didn’t receive some of the drinks we ordered. The next morning when we woke up around 8am we discovered the electricity in our room was out. It was HOT and nothing worked. Upon entering into the hallway, we discovered the electricity all over the resort was out and would not be back on until around 4pm. We went to breakfast at the buffet and could immediately see caution tape all around the pool area (which is very large and extensive). The caution tape remained around the pool for 2 days of our trip and was closed and unable to be used. That night we went to dinner again at the Grill, and were once again given a pager and told it would be a 45 minute wait. We waited and the pager never went off so after an hour we went back up. The entire book was crossed out and we were told there was no record of our reservation at all. They sat us down and gave us steaks (no menus, no appetizers, no choices), rushed us along, and quickly sent us on our way with a promise to have a reserved table the next day to make up for it. Normally we would have liked to go elsewhere to eat but since they had made special reservations we did return to the Grill the next day and were immediately seated and given champagne— there wasn’t really anything else special besides not having to wait since the champagne is included anyways but it was a nice thought and Melissa was a very kind waitress and the best we had the entire trip. The next day we went to reserve a spot at the hibachi restaurant. We were told that you had to reserve a spot between 11-3 with the concierge. When we went around 2pm, we were told both concierge staff members were at lunch and to come back later. After complaining I was able to leave a note for the concierge and a reservation slip was slipped under my room door. I was really excited because hibachi is my favorite and last time we visited Sunscape Curacao the hibachi show and food was amazing! This time however, it was awful. The soft red overhead light was burned out so there was only a single emergency flood light lighting the room which was VERY BRIGHT and kind of ruined the mood. There was no appetizer menu and only soup which didn’t have any meat in it, followed by the hibachi. The waiter didn’t appear to have done thins many times as the “show” aspect was completely missing and he cooked the food quickly and left. We didn’t have any issues finding seats on the beach but the tables they used to have were gone so you had no place to put your drinks unless you had a cabana and those were always taken. Overall while we did enjoy our vacation we know that we overpaid based on other trips we have taken in the past. We love a good bargain and try our best to do into things with an open mind but we were very saddened to see one of our favorite resorts deteriorate in such a way. Sadly, we won’t be returning to Sunscape Curacao. The Pros: -Amazing snorkeling right off the beach and crystal clear water. We didn’t need to go on any excursions or spend extra money because we could see many fish right off the beach. -No reservations at the restaurants (except the hibachi restaurant) so we didn’t have to constantly go to the concierge to make reservations and waste time every morning. -Accommodating staff. While the staff definitely left a lot to be desired (not bringing drinks half the time, room service not cleaning the room until almost 4pm everyday) they did try their best to fix things when it was brought to their attention. -Free WiFi! This was a huge plus. The Cons: -No hot water in the showers. We stayed for 8 nights and in 2 different rooms and did not have a hot shower a single time throughout our vacation. We showered in the morning and before dinner and the water ranged from freezing cold to the few times we got lucky and had lukewarm water for a few minutes at a time. Good luck shaving your legs when they’re covered in goosebumps— now that was an adventure 😂 -Disorganized staff. Pager didn’t go off one night because staff forget to activate it before giving it out, waitresses avoiding taking your drink order and trying not to make eye contact, went to the concierge to reserve dinner at the hibachi one day and were told to come back tomorrow because both staff members were at lunch at the same time. -Weird outlets. Universal outlet adapter didn’t fit into any of the outlets except the American one and the mirror on the wall couldn’t be moved so using a curling iron or heat hair tools was not an option at all. -Power outage. Woke up one morning and there was no electricity throughout the entire resort for an 8 hour period of time (basically all day). -Pool was closed and caution taped for 2 days during our stay without an explanation as to why.

    Unless you are dutch, this resort is not for you

    We had to wait 3 hours to get our room key even though we got there after 3pm. This is unacceptable. No appologies or something. After we finally got the key after 3 hours of waiting in the hot, the room they gave us was very noisy, there was a permanent humm going on. I went to the reception and tried to talk with Lisbeth to ask to change my room as I would not have been able to rest with that noise. She told me from the strat that she cannot change the room. Not even tried. While I was waiting at the reception to resolve my situation, a group of dutch people just got there. At that moment Lisbeth left me and instantly and started to talk with a dutch lady that was just checking in. It did not took them even 3 minutes and Lisbeth gave them the key for the room. And we were waiting 3 hours? How would you take this? When we checked out Lisbeth was there again. She was very cold, not even a few nice words "hopefully you enjoyyed...blalala". While staying there we could clearly see how different the personal treated the dutch people compared with the rest of us. This is unacceptable!!! We finally got a room in the new building at the 4th floor. The bathtub glass door is a real hazard. The bathtub was old, scratched, the grout of the tiles was missing. It looked dated and old. Overall the bathroom was in a poor condition. There were only 2 shower towels and no wask cloth or face cloth. Even though I went to the reception and talked with a guy (i forgot his name, Byomi or something) he right a way faked a tel conversation like he was telling someone to bring us towels but I had a feeling he is lying, because for another entire day we had not towels. Inwent again to the reception, this being the 3rd day in the morning and talked woth another guy (the manager he called himself- Klaus Kruer or something) and he assured me that i will get the towels. Nothing, nada. Still no face towels after 3 days. Only after I catched the maid supervisor on the floor and told her, we got some face towels. In the 3rd day only. Are they expecting us to wipe our face, hands, body and buttotch with one and single towel? This is unacceptable. Buffet food very poor. Had the same food for the entire week. Cakes in the bar area were stale. Poor entertainment. Japanese restaurant is a joke! Awfull! I could not wait to get out. Italian restaurant the same. The personal is not very nice and the food choices are very poor. Grill restaurant was much better than all the other restaurants. Coffe made by Ivonne was amazing though! She was always nice with us, actually with everybody. Thumbs up! Beach was very nice and well maintaned. Diving team was very nice and helpful. We were very pleased with the dives. Overlall we really enjoyed Curacao, a wonderful island, but for sure we will not return to Sunscape.

    SuNscape is a cool hotel,

    Sunscape is a good clean hotel staff is perfect the food is pretty good security good only problem the hotel itself is a little dated besides that it’s five stars for me.....the casino was cool baBy was able to get her gamble on while I watched the games on The televisions in there , ))

    CURACAO 2019

    Exceptional service from all staff.. especially from the kids discover zone... was very easy to drop off the kiddies and not worry as they give you pager just in case anything happens.. they wanted to spend more time there then at the beach lol

    The place grew on you as time went on

    The resort, although dated, has some unique features such as the fantastic snorkeling by the artificial reef and the great beach. The room was very comfortable but could use a little scrubbing. Housekeeping was good but should refill toiletries and bar without asking. No hair conditioner available either, so bring your own. Need more full time bartenders at the pool bar. Swim up bar water was nasty and only treated once a week. Food was mostly bland but good at the seafood restaurant (Oceana), the Grill and buffet. Stay away from the Italian restaurant; it was the worst Italian “food” every: seemed like most meals came from a jar. Some of the staff were very friendly, especially Norma at the pool bar. Overall this resort is a good value for the money and I would recommend it.
