Great Resort for Couples Seeking a Quiet, Semi-Luxury Getaway
We visited Secrets as a young couple in mid-January, and overall the resort met our expectations. The staff was extremely helpful, friendly, and genuinely committed to making our stay enjoyable. The resort itself is visually beautiful, and the rooms were spacious, spotless, and well designed. The beds were exceptionally comfortable — we both slept incredibly well throughout our stay. The buffet breakfast and lunch were excellent, offering a wide variety of options, including local Mexican dishes as well as American and international cuisine. The à la carte dinner restaurants were also very good. Our two favourites were Jasmine and the Bluewater Grill, especially for steak lovers. There were a few areas that could be improved. The shuttle service to the beach club should run later, and the beach club itself would benefit from offering evening entertainment instead of closing at 5 p.m. daily. We also felt the music at the beach club was too quiet; since it’s a beach club, the speakers should extend onto the beach rather than being limited to the pool area. Finally, while the resort does a great job with daytime activities and certain evening events, the nighttime entertainment felt lacking. There were limited group activities and fewer opportunities for young couples to mingle, enjoy music, and socialize later into the evening. Overall, we would recommend this resort to couples looking for a quiet, semi-luxury getaway with their significant other.

It only looks good in the photos
Secrets Tulum looks beautiful online, but once you’re actually there, the cracks really start to show. Our room had broken lights, a cracked mirror, and a sliding door that was a nightmare to lock. On top of that, every time you rolled over in bed, the motion light would turn on. When we mentioned it, staff basically shrugged and said that’s just how it is. We knew going in that we’d have to rely on shuttles to get around the resort, but we didn’t realize how much of an inconvenience it would be. Even if you follow their schedule exactly, they’ll tell you the shuttle already came and left. If there weren’t enough seats, you were basically out of luck. At one point, we were turned away for a ride back to our own resort because there “wasn’t room,” even though we were standing there waiting like everyone else, we just happened to be last in line. They told us the next shuttle wouldn’t be for another hour or we could pay for a taxi. Completely ridiculous. A bachelorette party was stuck with us, too. Eventually they sent a large passenger van, but the driver came flying up the driveway screeching his tires because he was clearly angry. The customer care was awful. We also booked an Xcaret excursion through the resort, which was a huge disappointment. The rep told us it was all-inclusive meaning all you can eat and drink breakfast and lunch until 5pm, similar to Xel-Há, which we’ve done before (and paid less for). We were also told the dinner and show were included. None of that was true. Once we arrived, we were told breakfast wasn’t included, we only got one beverage, and lunch was limited to a single buffet meal. The dinner and show were not included, and we had to pay an extra $90 per person. After the show, the shuttle took us back, but then our own resort wouldn’t let us through the gate because it was after 10:30pm. We had to argue with them, even though we booked the excursion through them. They were yelling at guests for being “late” and initially refused entry. Eventually they let resort guests in but made us walk all the way up the driveway. People who were at the beach club weren’t allowed back at all. None of this was explained when we booked, and of course there was no refund or compensation. The front desk’s response was basically “sorry, you’re out of luck.” The restaurants were just okay. I had to send food back multiple times because the meat was still raw. I also thought it was strange that some servers asked for additional money after already being tipped. And when it rained, water was leaking through the roof and running down the walls. Overall, the resort is pretty in photos, but the service, communication, and overall experience were disappointing. We won’t be back.

Secrets Casa Zamna Beach Club Tulum
We just stayed a week at Secrets Tulum, Casa Zamna the Beach Club. While I only visited the main Secrets Resort twice, it was quite the property! Tons of pools everywhere, lots of restaurants and bars. I only ate at the Jasmine which was very good Japanese Asian cuisine. The Beach Club where our rooms were was so peaceful and relaxing. I will say that the staff was incredible. Carolina, Carlos, Nino, Martin and Yvonne were exceptional and provided such a memorable experience. Every other staff member was kind and hospitable as well but those named were especially incredible. As someone who had 12 years in hospitality myself, I was so grateful for such kind, warm, professional and prompt service from these individuals. Carolina and Carlos especially in the Rose Water restaurant were truly a gift. I miss them already. As far as the food it was hit and miss. The portion sizes were unexpectedly small but perhaps that is not a surprise for other resort goers. Some items were super delicious while others were underwhelming. The service was always fantastic though so if there was something I didn't like, it was quickly replaced with something new to try. The beach club itself was not overly party oriented whatsoever, which I liked. There were many other hotels along the beach with more emphasis on party/dance and I appreciated the more relaxed style of Casa Zamna. Johnny the entertainment director on the beach each day was awesome and provided good music that wasn't over powering, volleyball tournament's in the sand and bracelet making workshops. He was a delight. The room was great but the lights were odd, there was good mood lighting and different lighting options but I had to unplug the light around the base of the bed because it kept strobing as if on some sort of motion sensor gone wild. There is a shuttle service from the main resort to the beach club running most of the day. It doesn't go 24 hours but they will make sure you get to where you need to go regardless. The views from the upper rooms at Casa Zamna were impeccable. It was also located very near the restaurant row of Heartford, Gitano, ARC, Casa Banana, Ilios, and Bogotell so if you want to be near those notable places it was a 5 minute walk. I would highly recommend Secrets as it was the best vacation I've ever had. I would love to go back someday and see Carolina and Carlos!

Nice resort if beach time isn’t a high priority
Food and spa services were excellent. The staff were amazing especially Pablo who went above and beyond to help us during our stay. My husband became ill while on our trip and had to see the resort doctor who provided excellent care. Pablo also provided excellent care checking in everyday and ensuring we got the medications and anything else we asked for delivered to our room while he recovered. Once he felt better, Pablo continued to check in to see how our day was going and to let us know about the activities planned for the day. Our only disappointment was having to shuttle to the beach. We didn’t realize when we booked it that the beach wasn’t at the resort. The beach was beautiful but wish that more of the resort pools had cement or tile around them rather than sand as we prefer to go to the beach for that experience. With my husband being ill it was difficult to enjoy the beach as it was a trip to get there and not easy to return to our room if necessary. Also the music that played everywhere all day long was very club/bar like which is great for the evening, but it would have been nice to hear more relaxing maybe authentic Mexican style music during the day, or just no music sometimes can be nice too. We are in the jungle so why not hear the birds, etc. We thoroughly enjoyed the daily bike ride offered and recommend you try that if you can. Despite the illness hiccup it was a nice holiday. Thanks again to Pablo don’t know how we would of managed so well without his help.
