Moldy tower room (5034), Hostile front staff, Bait & Switch
My stay at the Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows (January 15–21, 2026) was extremely distressing and ultimately overshadowed what could have been a pleasant trip. While many staff members throughout the resort were courteous and professional, the front-desk experience was hostile and completely unacceptable. I prepaid for a Deluxe King Oceanfront Bungalow, but upon check-in discovered I was subjected to a “bait-and-switch” and placed in a lower-tier Oceanfront Tower room. When I raised this concern, a staff member who was not assisting me intervened aggressively. She refused to review my receipt and repeatedly insisted that the room category I booked did not exist. I was repeatedly told that because my reservation was booked through a third party, the hotel “could not do anything to help,” and I was dismissed rather than treated as a paying guest with a confirmed, prepaid reservation. After speaking with my booking agent, I was informed that hotel management had privately admitted the bungalows were overbooked and that I had been intentionally placed in a tower oceanfront room instead. When I attempted to address this with front-desk staff, the same individual said the agent “lied” and attempted to justify saying they never downgrade guests by fabricating room rates and mocking my financial status, claiming all bungalows cost “over $1,000 a night.” However, their own internal documentation for my reservation (showed the code 'EXPBAR'. This code is used for standard Tower rooms, proving the hotel’s system had already pre-selected a lower-tier room despite my premium payment. Management was aware of this discrepancy but refused to honor their mistake or refund the nearly $940 price difference. Throughout this entire interaction, no manager stepped in to de-escalate, intervene, or assist even as I was visibly upset and in tears in the lobby. The replacement room (Tower King Oceanfront, Room 5034) also had visible mold near the bathroom ceiling vent that was wet to the touch and had bubbling paint. I attempted to report this at check-out but again was met with a separate hostile encounter. The hotel retained my full payment for a premium bungalow while providing a room with a significantly lower market value, effectively pocketing a nearly $1,000 price difference without offering an alternative solution. It was later that I recognized this same staff member from my previous stay in December 2021, during which I experienced a similarly hostile check-in. The property itself is beautiful, and many other staff members were pleasant. However, the refusal to honor a paid reservation, hostile front-desk behavior, and complete lack of leadership during a serious guest-service failure makes this resort difficult to recommend.

Superb
location was perfect since our event was at the resort. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful. sitting outside by the fire pit was so relaxing, and in the hotel's location on the water was perfect, you could see whales breeching, sunset's were perfect. the tap water in the hotel was not good, so bring bottled water. The ice cream shop outside the lobby needs to be much better staffed, they only had 1 worker serving coffee, pastries for breakfast and the lines were very long.

Old and tired but great pools
Prices are high in Maui. to have a more budget meal plan with more seafood would be great. The meals were great just not for every day there is a more reasonable price coffee/ ice cream shop that sold a few danishes and cold cut sandwiches. The ride from the airport is costly (45 minutes $120) It would be nice to have a shuttle to the area by all the local hotels, The rooms were big and at one time nice. The fixtures are old and dusty, the carpet dirty. There are no modern day plug in for devices and the whole room was just dark .The pools were nice and the beach was very windy when we were there so I can't comment. We saw whales every day in the distance and that was a plus .There is a shuttle that will take you a short distance 1 mile to the other resorts and a small village with shopping and more diners. We didn't rent a car but was told it costs $40/day to park (which was cheaper than other hotels) so that is something to keep in mind when coming here.
