Overrated and expensive
Just got back from 10 days at the Hotel Anthelia and we had a generally disappointing stay. We have stayed at a couple of Iberostar hotels and had seen this one on previous visits and thought it looked very impressive and in a great location. We paid the extra price for a Selection Hotel and expected a five star experience however we were disappointed by the food and the quality of the rooms. The good points. To be clear the Hotel complex is large, quite stylish and the pool / public areas were impressive. The staff were excellent and very helpful and friendly. You could see this by the interaction between staff and returning guests who have clearly made returning visits. The not so good points. For the prices charged we would have expected larger and better designed rooms. What we got was no more than a standard room found in any 3 star hotel. There are many room offerings at an increased price which I can only hope are better. For us it was poor value for money. The big disappointment was the quality of the food, which was poorly cooked and lacked variety. The was often lukewarm at best and consisted of a lot of rehashed left overs. Meat was fatty and lacked flavour and the pasta tasted like it was cooked in ketchup. At busy times it was tricky to get a table as the week progressed. Having previously stayed at the Iberostar Lanzarote Park where the food was excellent it was a real disappointment. Indeed I had severe food poisoning on our second day for the first time in over 20 years of travelling abroad. We paid extra for the all inclusive option but really shouldn’t have bothered. The food is not worth the money. So in summary nice hotel, good pools, excellent staff spoiled by really poor food and fairly basic and small rooms. Unfortunately very expensive for what you get. It’s not a five star experience and there are other hotels in Adeje which offer better value and standards. Overall disappointing.

A great return visit
My wife and I stayed at the Anthelia hotel eleven years ago. It was a wonderful experience and we were determined that we would return one day. It is the only hotel in over 40 years of travel that we have returned to. We knew there was a risk that we would be disappointed and that it wouldn’t live up to expectations but if anything it surpassed our expectations. It is a beautiful hotel which is spread out over a huge site which looks out on to the sea. It is in an upmarket area of Costa Adeje called El Duque. The rooms are in blocks and are built in a traditional Spanish style which is very attractive. Our room had a sea view and overlooked one of the three beautiful swimming pools. Our room had been refurbished since we last stayed there and had every modern facility which you would want. Our only negative comment about the whole of our visit is that the hotel has followed the trend of other hotels by getting rid of a bath and making the bathroom/toilet an open plan area. This can be invasive of peoples privacy especially if you are sharing with a friend. We are a couple and are not fans of this type of set up as are others we have spoken to. We were on half board as neither of us drink much alcohol and we like to get out of the hotel to try different places for lunch. The half board was excellent and in the 10 days that we were there we were never disappointed with the excellent food choice. The grounds in the hotel are beautifully kept by the hardworking grounds staff. The grounds are well laid out with lots of shaded areas to sit and relax. The swimming pools are clean and well attended by the bar stall and waiters who work very hard to satisfy everybody’s needs. Also there are plenty of sun beds and parasols around all of the pools. The housekeeping staff do an excellent job keeping the rooms and hotel areas Spock and span. The restaurant staff are excellent and service driven. As would be expected in such a quality hotel the Reception staff are first class. The greatest thanks must go to the Animacion team who do an excellent job keeping every guest happy. No matter what time of the day or night they have a smile on their face. They provide excellent entertainment and activities both day and night be it sport, exercise, handicraft, childrens club and theatre entertainment. They are a real credit to the hotel. Every generation from cradle to grave is catered for. There is regular varied entertainment in the hotel’s theatre each evening and more relaxed musical entertainment in the hotel’s bar each evening. Something for everyone. If you require a change of entertainment that there are lots of local bars In Adeje or in Playa de Americas which is a 15 minute bus ride away. It a wonderful hotel for families of all ages. It is also well situated for public transport which covers the whole of island at very cheap rates. There is a board walk which runs outside the hotel for miles along the sea front. We hope to return again one day and maybe take our children and grandchildren with us.
