Barcelo Maya Palace vacation
Our weeklong family vacation at the Barcelo Maya Palace was great overall. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, the beach was beautiful, and the rooms were very comfortable. The food, however, was so-so - certainly not at the level of some other all-inclusive venues that we've visited. The buffet has a generous selection of items and after a few days we learned which items to avoid. The sit-down restaurants are beautiful but the food was very hit-or-miss. Some of it was really great and some of it was inedible (six of us all ordered the same dessert at one restaurant and all of us thought that it tasted like cleaning fluid).
Barcelo Maya is a truly exceptional resort! The amenities are top notch, pools are huge and relaxing, food at every restaurant is delicious and the entire staff is exceedingly polite and helpful. Most restful and fun vacation we've ever had.
A week in paradise!
This was our 2nd time at Barcelo and stayed at the Palace this visit. Fabulous as usual. We had a group of 9 and everyone but myself and my husband stayed at the Tropical. The hotel staff were so nice to put us as close as possible in buildings side by side. I can’t lie, our group was quite hesitant to disclose we were from the states because of the current political turmoil, but the employees at the resort were so friendly and kind. They didn’t care where we were from, they were just happy we were visiting their country and giving them our business. We felt very safe and never once worried at night while walking back from the Mayan Mall. Also, it’s so peaceful and quiet at night. They seem to have a zero tolerance policy for unruly or out of control guests. On our walk back to our room around midnight, there was a group of girls coming out of a bar and one of them must have had far too much to drink and was EXTREMELY sick. All of a sudden probably 6 employees from every direction came rushing over to help get her picked up and cleaned up all the while she was out of control. Those employees kept their cool and kept the distraction to a minimum. My husband went over and offered to help but they were so nice (even in the middle of an emergency) and told us to go enjoy our vacation. He did give them a tip for acting so quickly and making sure everyone was safe. Speaking of tipping, that was one thing I couldn’t help notice people weren’t doing as much this time as they did on our first visit. I was very disappointed to see people walk up to the bar and order 6-8 drinks for themselves and their party and not leave any tip. I understand there’s no where that says you must tip, but if I’m giving any suggestions or advice here, we always take at least $60-$75 in one dollar bills and $50 in fives for a 7 day stay. These employees work their butts off to ensure we’re well taken care of, and in our eyes it’s the least we can do to show a little appreciation for all they do. The resort itself was wonderful and clean, but we were disappointed by the murkiness of the water and the crazy amounts of seaweed that covered the shoreline. The resort did their best to manage the seaweed, but it was piling up faster than what the employees could clean it. And I give HUGE props to the men who have to spend their day raking and dumping the seaweed. Whatever they get paid per day, isn’t nearly enough for the amount of hard work they put in. Our junior suite was beautifully maintained by housekeeping and our mini bar was stocked daily. We were in the Oaxaca building on the second floor and was never bothered by the rooms above or below us at any time. Word to the wise, don’t forget anything at home. If you have to pay for it at the gift shops, you’ll be sorry. I would never expect anything for free, but a 400% markup on items like sunscreen or a pair of flip flops is outrageous when you’re already paying to stay there in the first place. They’d actually probably make more money if they brought the prices down. People may be more inclined to buy that kind of stuff once they get there so there’d be more room in their suitcases for other things. As someone with a very fair complexion, I would have rather saved the 10lbs worth of sunscreen and not had to pack a second bag than to pay a few extra dollars per bottle for sunscreen once I got there. I do wish there was a theme schedule for buffet nights that you could get at check-in. We had some very picky eaters in our party and if we could have known beforehand what days they were offering what themes (ie. Italian night, Mexican night etc) we could have planned our reservations around what people liked at the buffet. If you’re hoping to see turtles, we deemed 5pm daily as Tortuga Time! If you snorkel straight out from the Palace and go towards the rope, you won’t be able to miss them! As usual, we had an amazing time and are already talking about the new Adults Only hotel on the resort that will be opening at the end of this year!!
