Excellent vacation

We arrived on Saturday November 4. The room was gorgeous (bldg 17) on Sunday we came back from beach and had a massive problem with water coming from the ceiling, turns out the a.c. crapped out. The girls in the sunclub office were excellent. We were moved to the 3rd floor, but didn't like the room as much. They told us the 2nd floor would be available on Monday, so we took it. Kind of a pain to move for the third time, but no big deal. The food in buffet is not so good, it's ok but... the specialty restaurants were excellent, make sure you go to Gohan (Asian) and Gouchos.. (delicious steak)..soo good. We didn't care for the Italian and never went again.. Now for the beach...omg it was phenomenal... waves, warm water, nice tropical breezes the whole time. (not sure if this is year round) You can walk forever to the left. the bad thing on the beach is the vendors, what pains in the a##es. just keep saying no, unless you want something, The locals do come in, seems like they were there all week, not just on weekends like they say. Those are the only 2 complaints we have about this resort. Again the beach is amazing so I just didn't let that bother me much..Will definitely go back...love Puerto Plata, been to Punta Cana 9 times..and I'm thinking we will go to Puerto Plata from now on...

Another great experience

As last reviewed this property has undergone major improvements. This will have been my 10th time here and frankly I don't want to stay anywhere else there is no need for me to compare. The Sunscape has all that I need and want and having been here so many times now I know many of the staff and they know me. the food is good, the service is very attentive and the nightly entertainment is very enjoyable. the one thing that still hasn't bee corrected is that there are not enough umbrellas on the one side of the pool close to building #10. This area gets the sun in the afternoon when it can be very hot but the umbrellas need to be fixed to the ground so that they can't be moved the few that are thee are often moved leaving that side of the pool without provision for any shade. other than that I will return again and again. The staff are a wonderful group and really do make your stay most enjoyable

Our second year in a row

We had a great time again. We even met some of the same people we met a year ago. They had returned just like us because it is a good deal for the price. The staff is super friendly, the ladies at the daycare do an amazing job with the kids. Since last year, they added a few stores and a pharmacy that sells medication over the counter that requires a prescription in the US (antibiotics for example). The added a gym, a spa, and lots of sun chairs at the pool. We attended a presentation where you could buy a club membership, but we didn't, the offer did simply not suit our small family and the little travel we do. The beach was nicely cleaned up and there was a flotation device in the ocean where the kids could climb on and play. The concierge arranged for a taxi to Puerto Plata, we went with the cable car to the mountain, it was great, and the driver only charged 40$ for the round trip and also took us for some shopping to the city. At the beach we arranged for a tour on a horse along the beach, that was also a great experience. We paid 50$ for 2 people for 1 hour. We are already planning to come back next year.

Amazing...where to even begin !

Where to even start? From the pools to the amazing beach and the wonderful staff! We tried keeping track of names but everyone was so nice!! The hostesses at breakfast so sweet! The guys at breakfast and ladies in the coffee shop, the private waiters for the beach area so great! The beach was amazing a little windy but perfect on a warm day! Water was wondering and clear! Now there are locals that sell items on the beach they are nice but can be pushy just simply say no thank you! Our room had an amazing view SunClub building 15 room 203! However we had a little one (13 months) with us and the entertainment at night (although great they put on so many shows for the guest who want to go) however for the rest of us who want to relax after 10/11 pm it felt like we had a 12 piece band and speakers in our room. That was just something minor very loud but minor! The food was always good had a couple things that weren't great but that's anywhere! Plus unlimited food and drinks you'll find stuff you'll love! Being in the SunClub was nice because you had access to little private pools, areas, food, drinks, and a roped off beach area! Sometimes we had the beach section and pools to ourselves! It was simply a great vacation that exceeded our expectations for the deal we got! Thank you to everyone at SunScape!! Specially traveling with a little one the stress went away with everyone so nice and sweet!

Nice Inexpensive Caribbean Getaway

The wife and I (mid 40’s) are laid back, experienced Caribbean travelers and typically do not stay at all inclusives. We booked this trip to Sunscape at the last minute primarily because we found a deal with an incredibly low price (more on this later) and had not yet been to the DR. Therefore we booked before we really had a chance to study the resort but after reading some of the reviews we were a bit worried if we were going to be disappointed. In short, we were not. The following are our thoughts on the place. Resort Grounds: Very nice and well kept. Not over the top spectacular as you can tell this resort is a bit old but I certainly saw nothing to complain about. Pools were clean as well. Room: Clean when we arrived. AC could achieve near blizzard conditions. Hot water was a bit spotty during late afternoon/early evening as everyone was getting ready for dinner but overall not bad. Had a problem with the in-room safe that was corrected within 20 minutes. Three prong plug next to bed and bathroom sink (I had seen other reviews were this was a problem). Finally, the bed was actually one of the most comfortable we have had in all of the Caribbean. Beach: As others have described, the beach is a short walk through a wet mangrove area from the resort so no rooms are ocean front or even ocean view. Not a big deal for us though as the walk was only 2-3 minutes. Again as others have mentioned playa Dorado is not the stereotypical white sand beach that you may find in other places. The sand is a light brown, in fact very similar to what is found in our neck of the woods along the outer banks of North Carolina. Still it was clean, wide and you could walk for over a mile in either direction along the curved shoreline. In my humble opinion, anyone who thinks this beach is not wonderful is not a true beach lover and is only interested in a post card. The water, while not as clear as others is still quite nice and we saw a number of people snorkeling when the waves were calm. In short we thought the beach was beautiful. Finally as with many places in the Caribbean there where certainly beach vendors but if you’ve traveled in the Caribbean enough you know a simply ‘no thank you’ is all it takes. Food: Probably the lowest point. It’s not bad and I never had problems finishing what I ordered nor did I go hungry but it is an area they should improve upon. Having said that, if you are a real foodie and food quality is at the top of your list, then travelling to a moderately priced all-inclusive is probably not the wisest choice. Our favorites were the pizza place and the Asian restaurant however it’s difficult to really judge the a la carte restaurants since we only went to each one once. Entertainment: We are not exactly fans of resort entertainment so we only watched a couple of shows. It’s not Broadway by any means but the staff works their tails off and we certainly respected what they were doing. Much of the dialogue was in Spanish due to the large number of Dominican’s that were at the resort. Weekend Locals: One thing I will say is that this resort seems to cater to Dominicans. We arrived on Thursday and left on Tuesday and certainly beginning Friday through Sunday there were many locals and things became more crowded. Having said that we did not experience any negative issues other than the place being more crowded of course. I have read many horror stories from other reviewers but based on our experience it was not such a big deal. However if you prefer not to experience this it would be better to avoid the weekends or perhaps plan an excursion or two during that time. Staff: Very good staff in all areas that we interacted with. Many were not very skilled in English but that’s part of the fun of being in another country in our opinion. We did tip probably $10 or so a day to various staff that we dealt with most often. Sun Club: The Sun Club upgrade was part of our deal and we stayed in building 2 in the adult’s only section. I’m not sure what the typical upcharge is for this but I would certainly recommend it if possible. Having your own bar (Ramone was great btw, not good English but it didn’t take him long to know what you liked) and small pool right outside your room made for a nice retreat when things got busy in the main pool and other areas. The small buffet in the Sun Club was hit or miss but we always found something to nimble on without having to walk to the main areas. The liquor upgrades and bottled Presidente were also much appreciated. Check in and check out through the Sun Club was painless and without issue. Other: We participated in the sales pitch for 90 minutes. Actually maybe closer to two hours because we were actually asking questions. In the end after saying no thanks a few times they finally gave up. For our trouble we got a free couples massage which was great. Rating: I always like to consider costs when I am rating any place of business. Having said that my wife and I paid about $1,350 total (not each) for 5 nights including round trip air from Raleigh, NC. At this price I believe the resort delivered in every way expected. We have made similar trips to nicer all-inclusives but at more than double the price. Therefore based on the experience and price I am rating this resort 4 stars. Of course the rating may only be 3 stars if the price were higher. Still if I were on a tight budget but really wanted a Caribbean getaway I would certainly go back. I’m happy to answer any questions I can.
