Great Resort

I stayed at the Sunscape from Jan 09-16. The resort itself is wonderful and my family had a lovely time. The Good: Resort is kept very clean, the buffet is constantly being wiped down and made to look presentable. The resort grounds are lush and well maintained. Everything is well within walking distance which is nice. After 4 days of a not so great room we were moved to building 12 which was a little bit of a walk away from the lobby / restaurants but we didn’t mind. This room was large, clean and had a comfortable bed. The bathroom was a great size as well. I am a vegetarian and was always able to find something to eat. The food at the buffet was enjoyable. The sunclub restaurant has a vegan burger which was good. The Bad : The morning service at the buffet is horrible. Not once within our 7 day stay did a waiter come around to give us water or to even check in. They avoid eye contact the entire breakfast. Make sure to bring your own water, or get plenty of OJ for your meal. Lunch and Dinner service was ok. I did not find the staff to be too friendly although we were always sure to tip. Most staff looked miserable especially when being asked for something as small as coffee or a napkin. I requested a king sized bed upon booking however was given a room with two double beds. We immediately returned to the lobby to see if a room change was possible. We ended up having to wait 4 days. Our first room was the first building out from the lobby behind the “quiet pool”. Every time we flushed the toilet there was a horrible smell that immediately filled the room and would linger for hours after. The bathroom was very small and the shower was situated so close to the toilet the floor in front of it was always soaked. Our second room (4 days later) was much better!! We did not spend much time at the beach as it is not very nice. There’s a lot of garbage an seaweed that gets washed upon the shore that accumulates and sits there. I have seen the most meautiful white sand / torquise beaches so this one was very unamusing. We went for an hour walk along the entire beach close to sunset every day (6:00-7:00) and found this to be the time the beach looks it’s best, especially to the right of the resort (past all the others) must see!! I found the pool water to be a little dirty the last two days of our stay. Pool loungers need to be reserved if you want a spot as they fill up fast. I would reccomed the Sunclub if it’s within your budget.

great trip. I would definitely go back

we upgraded to Sun Club Adults only. It was great having the private pool and bar service. We were able to meet great people this way because is was quaint. The room was spacious. We ate at a la cart all week. It was so nice not having to book reservations. Food and drinks were both good. The staff was very attentive and friendly. A special thank you to Darend for all of his attention to detail, he was wonderful. My only negative is the lack of good music in the sun club area and the main main. Overall a great vacation. I would definitely recommend it.

A good resort but not blown away

We had a good time at Sunscape. As mentioned in the email, we were not blown away. It was a so-so resort, not modern but not old either (it used to be a Barcelo). Below are the pros and cons. Pros: -Very clean property. Even the public washrooms (like the ones at the lobby and by the pools) were super clean at all times. Usually those ones at most resorts are terrible. -Rooms are very spacious. -Food was surprisingly decent (I was warned that food in Dominican is worse than in Cuba, which I didn't think was possible). The calzones at the pizza bar were delicious. We ate a lot of fried chicken from the pool restaurant. Lunch buffet was decent (decent pasta, chicken, steak). Breakfast buffet was ok (not a lot was good except your good old omelet with toast). -Staff were for the most part very friendly and helpful. -There is a café/coffee shop! No swimsuits allowed. Something as simple as a coffee bar with pastries made our stay so enjoyable. Out of all the resorts I’ve been to, only Sunscape has a café. What an awesome idea! -Restaurants were pretty good! Definitely try the seafood entrees at the Argentinian restaurant. Sooooo good! And the lasagna at the Italian was yummy as well. -We did a spa day on the resort at the most beautiful spa ever. It was more gorgeous than some of the high-end spas I've been to in downtown Toronto, which is saying a lot. If you go, please ask them for a deal!!! Don't pay for any of the services at the advertised value. Ask them for $50 USD package that includes a 45 minute massage, full-day access to spa facilities, and a session with the fishies in the tank that nibble away at your feet. The spa facilities include a jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna; all three were top notch. -Disco was fun. It’s outdoors in the beach snack bar area under a roof. Good Spanish music with some American Top 40 thrown into the mix. Cons: -The beach wasn't that nice. One day there was tons of garbage and seaweed in the water, but the days that followed were ok (they cleaned it much better). Oh and you are HARASSED by vendors at this damn beach. It was horrible........ I've never experienced anything like it. Every 5 minutes you would be approached by vendors to buy jewelry, massages, braid hair, etc etc. They were relentless. For the first 2 days I was so turned off and frustrated that the resort would allow so many vendors to be on their property, but after day 3 you learn to tune them out. The key is to be very dismissive and borderline rude. They will push and push if you show them even the smallest amount of interest, so just shut it down immediately and you will learn not to be so bothered by them. -Asian restaurant took almost 3 hours from start to finish. The wait for a table was so long, and the food took close to an hour to arrive. The restaurant wasn't even packed, which is what I didn't understand. Dessert also took pretty long to arrive. The other restaurants also were a bit slow. Expect to wait 25-30 min for your food to arrive. -The rooms are, in my opinion, not cleaned up early enough. One day I got back to the room at 5pm and they still haven't cleaned it!!! Every day they would clean it in the late afternoon, like 2 or 3pm. All resorts I've been to start cleaning at 10am the latest, soooo I'm not sure what's different about this one. -Our room had a faulty lock, which they did not attend to, despite two separate requests. The key cards didn’t work on FOUR occasions! I had to go to the front desk each time to exchange them. -Pizza bar (the one with the yummy wood-oven calzones) kept some weird hours. They opened at 6pm and closed at 9pm, or something ridiculous like that. People would definitely appreciate it if they were available more often. I know a lot of people were disappointed. -There were 13 buildings in total with rooms. The original room we were assigned to (in building 9) was VERY VERY far from the beach and pool. A trip back and forth from the beach to our room would take 20-25 minutes, so if you forgot anything in your room, then you are screwed. -The entertainment at night wasn’t our cup of tea (and I hate to speak badly about these things because I know the people involved work really hard), but it just wasn’t exciting.

Excellent value, good quality on the nicest stretch of beach

The Sunscape in Puerto Plata is located on a large property in the Playa Dorada complex, set on a wide, sandy and well-treed beach including a ‘Blue Flag’ zone. We walked the full length of the beach, past all the neighbouring resorts, several times. The Sunscape beach was our clear preference, although if you want to snorkel or wade out into shallow water and feed a bun or banana to the fish, the best location is near the middle of the beach in front of the neighbouring Gran Ventana. The Sunscape has plenty of beach chairs – no need to rush out with towels to reserve. There is also ample shaded area – no umbrellas, but many, many trees providing excellent shade. And, of course, there is also an abundance of full-sun area. FYI, there are not any small tables on the beach, so bring a beach bag. Beaches in the D.R. are public, so you will need to accept that there will be vendors. We generally found them to be polite and not pushy. If you know what you’re looking for, and are prepared to barter, you can buy most of your souvenirs from the comfort of your beach chair. There is also a shopping mall next door to the hotel where you can buy souvenirs and liquor. And a 25-30 minute walk along the beach toward Puerto Plata will also bring you to a beach-side market with numerous vendors. The Sunscape has one very large pool, one smaller pool, and a small pool in a private area for Sun Club patrons. Lounge chairs around the pool are more limited, with most having been reserved by 8 AM. Many poolside lounge chairs can be fully reclined and are higher quality than those on the beach. One of the major pluses of the Sunscape is that you do not need to make reservations for any of the five a la carte restaurants. It is first-come, first served. At peak times (7-8 PM) you may have a short wait, but our group of four ate earlier (6/6:15 arrival) and never had to wait. We ate at Da Mario (Italian), Gohan (Asian) and Gaucho (grill) restaurants (but not at Castaways). There was always a wide variety of menu items to choose from, including a chicken, fish and a pasta choice. The grill and Italian restaurants also offered a small salad bar with a good assortment of items. The grill and the Asian had good (and tender) beef selections. Breakfast was at either Windows (wide selection) or Castaways (more limited but still a wide selection). At lunchtime, there were plenty of choices at Windows, Tamarindo (by the main pool) and Castaways (on the beach). For four nights we opted to eat at Windows, the buffet restaurant. Each night there were pasta chefs, plus a featured meat (such as Beef Wellington or pork tenderloin), and several chicken and fish dishes. Needless to say, there were potatoes, rice, numerous veggies, cheeses, breads and buns, and dessert choices. The buffet food was standard four-star fare – lots of choices, no one went away hungry. It is the typical buffet that needs to cater to a wide variety of different ages, preferences, nationalities and taste buds. There were nightly themes (ie, Mediterranean, French, Caribbean, Dominican). In addition to all these restaurants, we really enjoyed a post-dinner coffee and sweet snack at the Coco Café, or a slice of pizza from the wood oven pizzeria (open 6-11 PM) upstairs adjacent to the theatre. As for the evening theatre shows, they were mostly dance shows, and while well done and energetic we found each night to be a variation on the other nights. We did enjoy the singer/flutist/sax player who performed one night in the lobby lounge, and a three person band on a different night. Adjacent to the theatre there were table tennis and pool tables, which the younger crowd was greatly enjoying. Prior to the theatre show there was also a children’s participation program on the stage, which the children were clearly enjoying. Rooms are spacious and located in a dozen three-storey buildings. On arrival, we found our room to be very clean. Ours had two double beds, while a single queen would have been preferred. The bathroom was quite large with a shower, no tub. While there were bath towel hooks on the wall, one helpful addition would be a couple more hooks for hanging clothing. Same can be said for the public bathrooms – hooks on the inside of the doors would be helpful for hanging a beach bag or towel. Bathroom door hinges could use a few drops of oil, and the thermostat was missing the indicator lever, so adjusting the temperature required pulling the cover off the thermostat. Just minor things. There was a good-sized balcony with two chairs and a table. There was no charge for the in-room safe. Our room, which was standard/garden view, also had a small refrigerator that was stocked with a couple beers, pop and water. Don’t drink the tap water. Bottled water will be restocked, or ask maid, or get from a bar… and there are bars everywhere. While our room was well away from any pool, disco or theatre noise coming from the Sunscape, there was evening sound from the entertainment program at the neighbouring Blue Bay resort. We were able to get a reliable wifi signal in our room. There is actually wifi across much of the Sunscape property, but the strongest signal was in the reception area. A friend traveling with us had his wifi diagnostic tools, and could see that the signal was strong but that there were overlapping and competing signals due to the channels that were being utilized. The only tour we wanted to take was into Puerto Plata. Rather than booking an excursion, we hired a taxi for about 5 hours and we hired tour guide Simon Martinez. The cab drivers and Simon are situated just outside the main entrance, on the Sunscape property. Hiring our own cab and Simon was an excellent idea, and we took the cable car to the top of the mountain, saw the caves and gardens there, visited the fortress, city square and amber museum, all for about half the price of the excursion package and with the flexibility of being on our own schedule. All of the staff we encountered from the greeters/hostesses at Windows for breakfast, to the maids, bartenders, and restaurant staff, were extremely friendly, professional and courteous. Clearly, the Sunscape prides itself on the quality and hospitality of the staff. You will get pestered to hear the sales pitch for the ‘Unlimited Vacation’ club that is being pushed by sales reps in the lobby area. This is not unique to the Sunscape. Virtually all resorts have a similar product that they are selling. If you agree to the presentation, just make sure you know what you are doing and don’t buy something you don’t want or need. Expect an aggressive sales pitch. Or just continually refuse to hear the presentation, and keep walking. If you are looking for good vacation value, the Sunscape is a wise, and perhaps your best choice in Puerto Plata. The wide beach, large pool, spacious rooms, and no need for restaurant reservations are all pluses. Food and drink is standard four-star fare, and the staff are friendly, energetic and professional.

Good choice if you pay cheap

I had a room in block 7 whose delivery route was around it. It's noisy, you have to have a block near the beach. The room is clean, the room service is good, the door between the rooms is poorly insulated. I had an internet code but the connection was not good. There was a free connection in the lobby but slow because too many guests on the internet. The restaurants are good, it lacks employees to serve us well because we must be patient to obtain our products. The beach is good, never waves, there is like a coral reef that protects it. The restaurant of the beach is interesting with its small buffet without waiting. There is the Club option which offers a mini pool and a private bar with food or a section in the shade on the beach. It is not worth paying for this option because there was no control or verification during my stay. On the whole the site is ocrrect, family, the employees are nice, the animation like everywhere else, nothing exceptional. Overall I would say that it is an excellent 3 star and a low 4 star. For my part it was my first and last visit because I like hotels that are not old.
