Secrets the Vine
Nina S, Carbondale, Pennsylvania
Thu Aug 25 11:22:35 EDT 2016
Just returned from a 5 night stay at Secrets the Vine. Will separate my review by topic. Grounds/Room: The hotel itself was very clean and modern. The staff worked hard to make sure that it stayed this way. This hotel has almost 500 rooms and in my opinion, the common areas were much too small for a hotel with this many rooms. The resort sits on a small area of land, so they simply do not have the space. We prefer much larger resorts with an open layout. The front part of the lobby has a terrible sewage smell. Once we arrived, we upgraded to a "junior suite." The room was large and very clean & modern. The shower was huge and had a rainfall shower head. There was no bathtub. The balcony was large, but I wish there was a private wall in between each balcony. We were on the hard rock hotel side of the building and if you looked to the left, you could see the ocean and if you looked to the right, you could see the lagoon. The only rooms that were actually ocean front were the corner suites. They did not have any of these available during our stay there. This was unfortunate for me, because I really enjoy an oceanfront room. The hard rock hotel played loud music late at night, and it was difficult to sleep. I recommend staying on the Sandos side of this resort. Food/service: The food was decent, overall. The breakfast buffet was always good. The lunch, not so good. I definitely think that they should have more of a selection. For lunch, they served little shreds of fruit cut extremely thin. Mostly everything was served in very small portions. We ate at the sea salt grille for lunch one afternoon and the food was completely inedible. For dinner, there were several different restaurant choices. The steakhouse was great, we ate there twice. The italian restaurant was just okay, and the asian restaurant was terrible. The service was excellent throughout the resort. I didn't come across a single staff member that was unpleasant. The drink selection was great, and the quality was very good. Beach/pools: While on vacation, our favorite thing to do is swim in the ocean water. The beach at Secrets the Vine was somewhat disappointing to us. There was a good amount of seaweed on the shore as well as in the water. The waves were really rough. I think it could have been a lot better if the beach was kept clean throughout the day. I never saw anyone removing any of the seaweed/garbage that washed up on shore. One day, a large tree branch washed up on shore. It looked kind of dangerous, because if it got washed back into the water it could have hurt someone that was swimming. No one removed the tree branch all day. There aren't many beach chairs setup, but if you want them, there is a staff member down at the beach that will set them up for guests. There is also food/drink service at the beach, but there is only one person working there, so it is very slow. There were three main pools on the lower level. Again, it felt like they were small for a resort with 500 rooms. Everyone seemed to hang out around the pools, so it did get pretty crowded. There was also food/drink service around the pools. The pool water was very warm, not refreshing at all. They were kept clean, though, and two of the pools had nice views of the ocean. Entertainment: This was probably the worst aspect of the resort. There is an entertainment team and they did try, however, this resort simply does not have the space to have nice entertainment. The entertainment would hold activities during the day near the pools & beach. At night, there was absolutely nothing to do. After dinner, everyone just walked around or sat at one of the bars. One night, they set up a little stage down by one of the pools- I think they called it "casino night." The dancers had no room to move around, being that the stage was so small. You had to sit on beach chairs if you wanted to watch it. Another night, they had karaoke in the piano bar. This was much more entertaining than the show the staff put on the night before. Other resorts I have been to have large theaters with lots of seating and good, entertaining shows. Overall, I would give this resort an average rating. We will probably not return to this resort or to cancun in general. If you want to have an amazing, perfect vacation or honeymoon, go to Secrets St. James/Wild Orchid in Jamaica. More>

They Thought of EVERYTHING!
harrisce4, Richmond, Virginia

They thought of EVERYTHING! Property: From the little welcome kit to the turn down service, the relaxing music playing in the room when you first walk in, shower cap in the bathroom! (maybe this is only appreciated by people like me with crazy hair when it gets wet...). Nice balconies that face the water (whether partial sea view or completely waterfront). The bathroom downstairs is spacious calming, and has towels to dry hands on instead of paper towels. All of these little touches really make a world of difference. They have a photography center onsite if you want pictures to remember. Food: Usually I'm not impressed buffet food but their buffet restaurant Market Cafe was wonderful! Portions were small but I was glad. It meant I was able to try everything and not be overly full. The churro chocolate stand was heavenly. Samuel from Nebbiolo made my time the best. My last night there he gave me the best seat in the place by the window. I came on business and was there alone so usually romantic Italian restaurants make me feel awkward if I'm by myself but he went out of his way to make sure I was comfortable there bravo. Greek restaurant Olio on the 12th floor was delicious. Sea Salt grill had the best ceviche and chicken. So incredibly flavorful. Amenities: I used the business center a lot for work and even with only 2 computers, I never once had to wait. No extra expense, all complimentary. Quick and efficient wi-fi. The keyboard placement of the letters is a little different from what we have in the states but you get used to it. There's Spanish classes offered, a chess board randomly by the jacuzzi, water aerobics, and beach volleyball. So many things to do while you're here you really don't have to leave the resort. They had a comedy show at the Piano bar one of the nights I was there but I was too tired to attend. 3 pools in the same area to choose from (a more quiet one), and two with music and by a bar each. You will not go thirsty here people! Service: THIS is what will separate a good hotel from an OK or decent resort. Most resorts have good food and nice accommodations with a view. What really sets this place apart is the service offered by all of their staff members. From the cool towel you're given upon arrival in addition to your welcome champagne glass for you to sip on while waiting to check in. They thought of everything. I tell you what, when you're waiting in line to check in, it sucks a LOT less when you have champagne in hand ;-) Like I said earlier, Sam from Nebbiolo is fabulous. As is Ana from the entertainment by the pool. Her positivity is contagious and you can't help but smile when you're around here. If you'd like pictures of yourself (they have staff here who are willing to assist and are surprised when you give them a tip. They certainly don't expect it and go the extra mile anyway!). Location: Prime location here on the Hotel zone strip. Close to nightlife like Coco Bongo, close (literally a few steps) from the beach, and a short $1 USD public bus ride to anywhere on the strip, including the shopping area. Can't wait to come back to Secrets the Vine! More>

Beautiful and romantic

This is the 3rd time we've been to the vine. The service didn't seem quite as good as the previous times. The inside of the resort was very hot and humid, and our only reprieve for air conditioning was our room. I definitely recommend the preferred club. The private pool and restaurant, including the staff, are great. The one major disappointment this time, was no vodka in the room. They claimed not to carry it anymore. Other than these complaints, we had a wonderful time! We got engaged the first night we were there! More>
