Wedding Trip

My daughter chose the Now Larimar to have her destination wedding after a great deal of research and the recommendation of our travel agent. A group of 28 friends and family traveled to Punta Cana to celebrate the wedding on June 2. I am basing my review on not only my experience at the resort but also from the guests feedback that attended the wedding. Our check in was seamless. We had booked preferred so we were escorted into the preferred area of the lobby on arrival. We were very happy that both my daughter's room and our room were upgraded from preferred pool to preferred partial ocean view. We also had an adjoining door to the rooms so this was very nice that our granddaughter could go back and forth from room to room. Our rooms were nice, not deluxe as some resorts, but very comfortable. We were supposed to have a butler but never saw him except when we booked a cabana he was the one we asked and he took care of it. We didn't know that was who he was so it was just by chance. We had a couple of days that we could say our room felt quite damp and musty. The rest of the time they seemed fine so I am not sure if it has something to do with the cooling system not being able to keep up on some days. Our guests that also booked preferred were on the ground floor and said their room was always musty so that was a negative. We had no problem with getting our rooms cleaned but some of our guests complained that they did not any maid service on some days. I think the problem was that they were in the room when the maid tried to clean and they were passed up for that reason. The location of the preferred rooms are a big plus since they are next to the beach, preferred pool and main pool. In order to go to the main buffet or the restaurants you have to walk to the front of the resort but that is nice to be able to walk off your dinner before retiring for the night. This is a moderate sized resort so there is some walking to get around but it is not like some of the resorts that you need a golf cart to get around. Some of our guests booked into regular rooms and they were located in the building across from us. One thing I will mention is if you have to book two rooms because of children, do not count on them being beside each other. They say they will try to accommodate but this did not happen for some of our party and the parents had to split up to stay with the kids in different rooms because they were on different floors. The food we found to be average for a an all inclusive resort. There is a restaurant, Castaways, that is for preferred guests only that we went to for breakfast a couple of times due to it being convenient. I will say I liked the main buffet breakfast better due to a better variety of foods for everyone. If you are a coffee drinker, there is a preferred lounge in the preferred building that you can go to but the coffee is from a machine and I thought it was awful. I discovered that outside the preferred restaurant, they have a little coffee bar set up in the morning and that coffee was good. I liked to get a cup and go for a walk on the beach in the morning. If you are preferred, you are able to get bottles of beer instead of drinking the Presidente beer. We like Dos Equis and they had it! For lunch it was convenient to go to the Barefoot Grill and grab something fast. I will say that they had some odd looking burgers and the hot dogs were not something I would eat but the kids seem to like them. The specialty restaurants were good with our favorite being the Mexican. The nachos they bring when you sit down are really delicious and there is an appetizer for two that we got that was really good (very small so order a double if you are really hungry). My niece had a burrito that had pork in it and she said it was one of the best burritos that she had ever had. The wedding was done beautifully. It was a little nerve racking planning a wedding long distance but our travel agent was a big help on this and it turned out just fine. My daughter chose the divine wedding package and I think for the money it is the way to go. We did add on some flowers and a few other things but overall we kept close to what the package offered and it was a very nice wedding. We were afraid that the weather was not going to cooperate, since the ceremony was on the beach, but it ended up we had a few sprinkles at the beginning of the ceremony and then it ended. The cocktail reception after the wedding was held on the beach also and was very nice. We were going to have the dinner reception on the Carnival Terrace but due to the weather being uncertain, we decided to have it moved into the room that is next to the theater. Something I will mention on this is it worked out fine for us since the show that night was suppose to be outside (fire show on the beach) so it did not interfere with our dinner reception but if the show had been in the theater it could have been a problem since they were just divided by a sliding partition. We did hire the DJ and everyone had a blast so it is worth it even though it did cost around another $600. The food was good and overall I would recommend this resort for a wedding. Some miscellaneous things I will mention. The employees at this resort are very nice and we found to be accommodating on all our needs compared to some resorts we have been to. The question I have been asked is if it is worth it to go preferred opposed to booking a regular room. I loved the location of our room because we are beach people and it was very convenient. There is also the preferred pool right outside the building and we had a lot of fun there. I really liked that I could get domestic beer opposed to the house beer since I am a beer drinker. Otherwise, I can't really say that I would definitely book preferred if I would return in the future. We really did not have too many other perks that I thought were that exceptional for the extra money we paid. Be sure to take miscellaneous items such as bandaids, immodium, one dollar bills for tipping (we like to give people that deserve it something extra even though the resort is all inclusive) lots of sunscreen (we tanned before we went but still used sunscreen of at least 30 spf). All the mentioned items are available at the resort gift shop but are very expensive so plan ahead. DO NOT go off the resort to the shops down the beach. If you take a left off the resort you will see a sign that says shops with an arrow. Some of our guests were convinced by people that worked in the shops to go there and felt very uncomfortable. My daughters friend said they took her and her boyfriend down an alley and kept saying it is OK and that is when she turned around and said forget it. One of our group had her hair braided with the understanding that it was going to be $90. When the woman was done she said it was $190. Fortunately, the dad came in and told them no way and she backed down. I understand there were some shops that were farther down the beach that seemed ok but please do not go alone to these places. Remember you are in a foreign country and things are not like home. The reason I did not give the resort a rating of 5 is due to the fact that about half of our group ended up with diarrhea. I do understand this can happen but to have it happen to so many of our party was not good. I have traveled all over the Caribbean and Mexico and only had that problem one other time and I think that was because we ventured out and ate food off the resort. They warn you not to drink the tap water at the resort and I was very careful not to even brush my teeth with the water. Fortunately, I was the only one that was extremely sick since we had invited our guests to a resort that we felt was highly rated above a number of others. My problem may have been a combination of several things since I also had a fever and could barely get out of bed for 5 days (the flight was not much fun going home). I had to go to the doctor when I returned and he couldn't believe that I didn't venture off the resort to have the problem I was having. To sum everything up, I felt it was a nice resort to have a wedding. The majority of our guests had a nice time but the few mishaps make me uncertain of returning again to that resort. More>

We had fun and Wilkin, Juan F and Carlos were great. The entertainment in the quad was fun. The restaurants had good food and the hotel had great service. The beaches are beautiful and the water is warm. It was hot and very humid every day, but as long as you're in the water it is tolerable More>

Great resort, great price

We were there in early April. Accommodations were excellent, bugs were not a problem, weather was great. Food at the place out by the beach was great. For the most part, the food was good. As usual with these types of properties, the people make all the difference, and in this case, the maxim held true. Our butler Randy was a great guy that really went out of his way to take care of us. He even went so far as to decorate our room with roses, a bottle of booze, and a chocolate cake when he found out it was our 10th anniversary. We would come back to the property just to hang out with Randy again. He really made us feel like family, and we'll always remember him. The property gets five stars from me in some part because of the price. It is a nice resort, with many amenities that you can find at more expensive places. However, if you are looking for top of the line luxury and high end food, spend more money and go somewhere else. However, as I said above, the food is decent, the pools are great, the rooms are nice, and the people are fantastic. All in all, well worth the price of admission. More>

Stayed here for 2 weeks and honestly have to say me and my fiancé had the best time ! We are hard workers so it's nice to get away and enjoy some time together . The entertainment team were just amazing but two specially stood out to us always talking to us making us feel welcome ... Rihanna and goofy ... Thank you :) Also our favourite restaurant in the complex had to the Mexican for dinner and castaway for lunch time which was by the beach - the food was so good and service especially from alfredito who worked at both of these , always making us laugh always smiling making us feel so welcome -thank you :) ... Will defiantly be returning to now Larima in the future More>

Just got back from the Now Larimer. Had the best time. I met the nicest people. House keeping in our room was the best. We ate very good food at the French restaurant. Chef Manuel presented works of art right to our table. Our waiter Luis was very attentive and made sure our experience was over the top. The entire staff right down to our hostess Miguelina was just so excellent. We will definitely return here in the future. More>
