Beautiful, lush and tropical resort but disappointing food
Heather W, Whitby, Canada
Wed Feb 22 17:43:26 EST 2017
This resort is visually beautiful - it's a lush tropical rainforest with lots of wildlife roaming around from the second we entered the lobby. There are pathways all over the place between all the Iberostar resorts and down to the beach. Expect a 10-15 minute walk to the pool from the lobby. There are golf carts that can drive you around from designated spots, but sometimes its quicker to walk. Check-in was seamless (we were part of a wedding group and arrived after check in time), we were lucky to have a room close to the lobby. Room was average - dated colours and decor. Air conditioning doesn't go any lower than 22 degrees and it has a motion sensor so it shuts off when you leave the room, or if one person leaves and the other hasn't moved (such as sleeping). Bed and pillows are HORRIBLE. Rock hard bed and flat, hard pillows. Very uncomfortable for me personally. Our building had construction for 3-4 of our 7 day trip - we were often woken up to the sound of jack hammering on the sidewalk outside our room (we were 2nd floor) or other maintenance workers doing things in our hall. It was annoying when we wanted to have a nap or have a quiet afternoon indoors. Pool is huge and was very clean considering. It wasn't an overly busy week, so it was usually fairly easy to get a chair by the pool if you went before 10am. Beach seemed to fill up quicker, but we didn't spend much time there. Lots of shady spots by the pool for those who want to just relax and also lots of bali beds (more than I normally see at resorts). The beach was nice and long - lots of shade/covers and a long boardwalk to walk the length of the Del Mar/Beach resort properties. The most disappointing part of our trip was the food. We booked 3 a la cartes upon check-in - Japanese, Brazilian and the Steakhouse. I've traveled to a lot of all-inclusive resorts over the past few years, and I'd have to say this was the biggest let down. Both buffets (main lobby) had the same food everyday. One night there was an asian theme with about 8 dishes, but the rest was all the same food. The buffets for breakfast/lunch down by the pool area were always busy and the selection of food was slim and often empty of some things. We didn't LOVE any of the a la carte's. Japanese was decent, but a long wait for them to take orders and make food. Brazilian was a let down - not much food and the same side dish for everyone (no choices). Dessert wasn't worth staying for so we went to the buffet. Steakhouse was the same side dishes as the Brazilian (baked potato and half cob of corn). Steak was mediocre and overdone from what we asked for. Both nights we ended up at the buffet to eat some other food. Mexico was always my favourite place to travel for the food, even on resort, but this trip didn't have that same experience. Staff was wonderful on resort and everyone was friendly and helpful.

Would not return

This is my 7th all inclusive. Unfortunately, I have to say I would not return to this property, at least not to the Del Mar or Beach portions. My biggest complaint was how they limit you to 3 reservations for dinner at specialty restaurants. You eat at buffets for breakfast and lunch everyday, you want something different for dinner. I have NEVER before been limited at any prior resort. The buffets were also severely lacking with choices, most of which were exactly the same each night. The pool was cold, and took some getting used to. Later in the week, the pool was filled with floating debris and in one I actually saw a film that was forming near the steps. Gross! This part of the resort feels enclosed by all the trees, I like an openness and being able to see the ocean which this part does not have at all. This portion of the beach was full of seaweed and rocks. Not near enough beach chairs, but it didn't help that people would place towels and not be there for hours. The mattresses were AWFUL, pretty much the consensus of our group of 18. For the price, compared to others I have done, this place was not worth it. At least the property itself was kept clean and the staff was nice. Basically, if you are choosing this resort, I would highly suggest upgrading to the Lindo or higher. We were told by 2 in our group, who accidentally booked the Lindo and not the Del Mar, that they were not limited to reservations and their buffets were better with more options. I myself saw the pool in this area and would definitely upgrade.

Frequent visitor to Iberostar Complex

Check in was fast, room was ready at noon. We usually have to wait until 3pm. E-mailed ahead of time and got all of our requests for the room (Building 12, upper floor, king bed). This was out 10th visit to the Iberostar complex. Been to the del Mar, Beach, Lindo and Maya. We have also been to numerous other resorts in the Riviera Maya. Pros: -Great service. Everyone was kind and helpful. Our room was kept clean. -Building location. 12 is closer to the beach and pool. We did have a long walk for meals, but that was fine with us. -Easy ride from the airport -Beautiful grounds and pools. Very relaxing resort. -Beach is wonderful, no seaweed while we were there. -It's convenient to have a snack bar and self serve drinks at the beach. Though the food was the same every day. There used to be a variety. -Mediterranean restaurant is very good. Nice to get a break from the buffets. The appetizers are fantastic. Cons: -Our room did have a door that connected to another room. We could clearly hear their conversations. The hotel was only at 80% occupancy while we were there so not sure why both rooms were filled. -Temperature of food. As others have said, it is difficult to get a hot meal. Of the 6 al a cart meals we had, only one was hot. The rest warm at best. There must be something they can do to deliver a hot meal. The food on the buffet is rarely hot as well. -Over the years the selection on the buffets seems to have gotten smaller at the del Mar. Some mornings there were no potatoes at breakfast, which is usually at every breakfast. The Maya has a much bigger buffet. -Would be nice if they did away with the reservations system for dinner. All inclusive should mean unlimited a la cart. Also, would be nice to go to dinner when you want to, not when there is an available reservation. -The pools this time of year are COLD. I could not get all the way in. -You have to get up early for a good lounge/palapa at the beach. -We have been going to the Iberostars for at least 13 years. I don't think the al a carte menus have not changed in that time. Even though it looks more cons than pros, we love this resort. We will be back in April with our kids. It is worth it to upgrade to the Lindo or Maya if you can for food choices. They have unlimited al a carte reservations. _Overall it is a good value for the price

We're returning this Spring Break!

Loved our time so much we're returning this Spring Break - BUT to their Cancun resort in the hotel zone. We paid to go for the Ocean Front room and it was magical to have the water right in front of us. I've included a photo from our patio - we were in heaven! Pools were beautiful albeit a little cloudy in the water since we were there at peak season. The "STAR friends" were hilarious hosts for the many contests they ran each day in the pools. We went jsut to watch. So funny. Beach was well maintained and there were plenty of chaises and palapas to stay in the shade. There were quite a few small rocks off the shore so water shoes were helpful but consistently sandy flooring was there if you looked for it further south than the Del Mar area. The staff were so very wonderful in every way - kind and helpful and humble. I've missed them. The housekeeping staff often came during the day and again in the evening to restock. We had a problem with our sheets and pillowcases smelling like mildew and the sweet woman worked with me until she found a set that smelled fresh. It's understandable that they could get mildewed easily enough with so much heat and humidity but she made it right despite our language barrier. The ala carte restaurants were great and our servers were delightful. One wine steward was particularly awesome. I'm not much a wine drinker so my husband still had half a bottle left. The steward offered that he seal and sign the bottle and he woudl hold it for the next night at the next door restaurant. It worked and my huband enjoyed it agin without having to cart it back and forth from our room. What service! The buffets for lunch were not great. Our least favorite. But tough to pull it off each day. We preferred the fresher burgers out on the beach. Breakfasts were fine with made to order omelets each day. Loved them. Be sure to visit Xcaret (underground rivers, sea turtle nursery, snuba) and Xplor (more underground rivers and amaaaaazing ziplines) while there. And if you do go to Xcaret - DO NOT miss the show and splurge on their dinner at the show if you can. You will LOVE it! My husband was a little pissy about having to stay longer after being with crowds all day but even he raved about it all the way home. And I never imaged that was possible. Trust me. Go to the show. And buy your tickets online before you leave. 21 days in advance saves you more money. Playa Transfer was our private transfer to and from the airport and also to Xcaret and Xplor. So much better than the buses. Especially after a long day of flying or touring. It's our 2nd time using them. Tell Tello, the owner, that Mary from Minnesota recommended them. :) We listened to their club pitch and had breakfast and the next day, lunch and a day at the upgraded Lindo as the "perk". Lunch buffet was much better there. We joined the club after learning that our very favorite place in Florida was on their list but now we're told that it's really hard to get that one... We're working on reserving it for two years from now since we have other plans for Spring Break 2018. We'll see if it happens and if NOT there will be a review about the club to follow. For this year, we will use our credit to return to another Iberostar resort and have selected the Cancun location. The credit is enough for two of us to stay in a swim-out room on the ocean and we're thrilled to get there next month. Will let you all know how the Cancun property measures up after visiting next month.

Another great time in Iberostar wtih amazing zumba class!!!!

We went there on January 2017, our second time!! Love the Hotel is very Tropical. Great front desk customer service. We asked for a room near the beach, the room was clean and the bed comfortable. They have variety of food, but our favorite was Mexican tacos, you could find them in the small shopping center, the restaurant is called Ta Kit, there is just one lady cooking everything, so you have to be patient, but waiting time worth it. Amazing service, better then Punta Cana. Mexican people are hard workers. Also we had so much fun at the gym Fit & Fun!!! Awesome classes, my favorite was Zumba!!! The three instructors were great!!! Everyday Adriana (Zumba ) had lots of energy and she was teaching two classes a day!! Also, thanks so much to Luis Pana for his help explaining us how to use the equipment there.!!! sometimes the beach has lots of waves, but the last three days was calm and you can see the fishes . Restaurants good food too. The only problem that we had, was transportation inside the hotel. They do not have enough golf cars or personal to drive you to the lobby-beach, beach-lobby, beach-shopping center, etc. No good service.
