Beautiful but not what expected

I had explicitly asked for a hotel on a sandy beach for swimming, we wanted to swim in the ocean waves not just an ocean fed lagoon. Hilton Waikoloa was not it. We had to drive to a public beach a short distance away. We also had not been told there was a daily parking fee of $28/day when we booked the vacation so when they told us this while checking in, I was completely taken by surprise. In my opinion, that rate is highway robbery! Especially when the hotel already charges a high daily resort fee on top of the expensive nightly rate. Additional fees for everything is getting out of control!!

THE FOOD AND DRINKS WERE VERY EXPENSIVE. TRANSPORTATION IN THE RESORT AND THE SHOPPING SHUTTLE WAS POOR. NEVER ON TIME AND ONLY PARTLY RUNNING. WATER - $6 BOTTLE. INFORMATION AS TO EVENTS ON THE PROPERTY, ETC., WAS NON EXISTENT FOR THE FIRST FOUR DAYS. THE GROUNDS WERE GORGEOUS BUT SORELY NEEDED A CAR TO GET AWAY FROM THE RESORT TO EAT AND FOR WATER AND SNACKS. THE $25 BUFFET WAS REALLY LACKING FOR THE PRICE - ADDITIONAL TAX AND TIP. FOOD WAS ONLY OK. EVERYONE (NOT ON COVENSION TAB) THAT WE MET WERE BRINGING IN GROCERY BAGS, ETC. WE HAVE TAKEN AT LEAST SEVEN VACATIONS WITH APPLE AND LOVED EVERYONE OF THEM. WE MADE OUR RESERVATIONS THROUGH YOUR PHONE VACATION PLANNERS AND WERE VERY SATISFIED WITH THE.

Keeping Up with the Times

Feb 07 2012
I recently spent 4 nights at Hilton Waikoloa. I was anxious to see how the hotel had weathered the years as I was a guest at the grand opening of this property about 25 years ago, can't remember exactly. I was not disappointed at all! You would never know its' age! The rooms and all the public areas were in great shape and the staff was extremely accommodating. The resort is huge and never did I see anything but smiling staff and cleanliness in general. The new tram seems to operate a little faster though the boat service was disappointing with only 1 boat operating and only after 2pm. Perhaps the occupancy rate was low, but seriously--one boat? The automated arrival sign would advise you the wait for the boat going in your direction would be sometimes 23 minutes. So of course the boat was full when it would come, oh well. My only other concern was the selection of food available on the resort. The sitdown dinners are very limited now. There is KPC which is steak/seafood with great oceanside dining, great service, but the menu is quite limited. The kitchen is extremely accommodating in substitions and adding a lite cabernet sauce to a somewhat dry steak. Other than KPC you have a choice of a very good Japanese restaurant or the Chinese one. If you were here a week you would be in bad shape if you did not asian dinner! They have opened a Mexican offering but it is like fastfood and served on plastic plates. Tableside guacomole was tasty. There is a lounge with live entertainment which also served an extremely limited selection at dinner. On the bright side, the breakfast buffet was excellent to have included in the price of the hotel package. There was also a Dining Discount card available for $29.99 which instantly gave you 2 $10 coupons for use anywhere in the bars/restaurants and a 10% discount on subsequent purchases for the week of your stay. That card paid for itself in one meal and saved a good amount of money when eating in the hotel. Overall, I would stay there again in a heartbeat but would arrive with a few food items and certainly a stash of rum to drink from my lovely balcony in the light evening breeze.

STAY AWAY FROM THE TIMESHARE SCAM
Steven R, Fox Island, Washington

We have attempted to take advantage of the 6 day package 295.00 down offer. Here's the truth you check in the first day after 4:00 so you loose that day and you check out by 11:00 so you loose that day, hence a 4 day 5 night stay with a rental car for about 1000.00. With tourism down due to the volcano, potential for laze and certainly daily vog, you can get a better deal almost anywhere without having to waste yet another day on a time share presentation (most of the time mid-day) which now means you're down to 3 days of fun in vog. For 8 months now we have had at least 8 IDIOTS call, at all hours to make the reservations. None of them new what they were doing and reservations have yet to be made. Because of our continued frustration we decided to simply forget about going and asked that our money be refunded. The answer was a flat out NO regardless of their screw ups. In my opinion this is a gigantic scam as you pay in advance only to find reservations can't be made and if you do make them nearly 50% of your time there is wasted. DO NOT FALL PREY AS WE DID...Like Nancy Reagan said "Just say no". Hilton ripped us off, don't let this happen to you! It is not the deal you may think it is.

Disappointing

On the upside, as Hilton Honors Diamond we were upgraded to the Ocean Tower with an ocean view (gorgeous!). The room was nice and the bed was comfy - all what we expect from Hilton. On the downside, the towers are a LONG way from parking and we rarely saw a boat and the tram service was slow and spotty. Upon check-in, we were told to take our luggage on the tram ourselves! For late May, we were suprised at the limited hours and shuttered facilities. -The Cantina was closed and the adult pool was only open until 6 PM. Dining options were really limited on the property and we saw a lot of families carrying boxes of pizza and bags of food from Costco. If you are a light sleeper, do NOT get a room in the Ocean Towers. The mynah birds shriek during the night (yes, the night!). Hilton will give you earplugs if you ask at the desk.

Our Stay at the Hilton in Waikoloa

Aside from a few uncomfortable things (I had to repair the toilet and the tub was stopped up), we did not like how incredibly expensive ALL of the food on the resort was. Also, the Boat Landing Cantina, which was the closest to our room, was not open a single time during our stay. Being from the Southwest on the mainland, we were excited to see such an option at the resort. The fact that we did not get to spend an evening there was very disappointing. Also, the pool reserved for adults closed at 6:00 pm... which was pretty much the only time that we wanted to swim As for the room itself, a microwave would have been wonderful, and I already mentioned the issues with the bathroom. That is the end of my complaints. Now for the rest: though our room was slightly dated, it was very comfortable, our view was spectacular, and the bed extremely comfortable. We slept great! The housekeepers were prompt and well skilled, and (after the first day) there were no strange odors in our room. It felt like home! The grounds were very well maintained and the environment was both welcoming and peaceful. Did I mention the breathtaking view? The well kept grounds were the perfect accent to the amazing view of the ocean. We went to the Kamuela Provision Company restaurant for my birthday dinner and was simply overwhelmed with the experience. We sat right by the water (a first for me) and had an exquisite meal with exceptional cocktails, all whole enjoying the ambiance cultivated by the friendly staff.

HHONORS PERKS We stayed at Waikoloa Village using HHonors points. Overall, a good deal for HHonors members. Because we are HHonors gold members, WV waived the resort fee and offered two free continental breakfasts per day. This in itself saved us money. MAINTENANCE We felt the property is dated and not to Hilton standards. Several of the many Asian museum relic reproductions needed dusting/upkeep and the hotel itself needs a facelift/refurb. NAVIGATING THE PROPERTY The hotel property is huge. I never saw the boat transportation running, and the train was usually a miss. Waiting for the train can take up to 20 minutes and monitors at the stops will tell you how far away the trains are. We did find that walking on the back part of the property (ocean side) is faster than the front side. If you can take stairs, 3 bridges from the front of the palace tower will take you quickly to the back of the breakfast area and near the registration steps. If you are parking and using the expensive self-park option ($27 per day), allow yourself at least 20 minutes for walking before you will actually be in your car and on the road. ROOMS Our room in the Palace Tower was spacious. Plenty of space for multiple large suitcases. We also enjoyed the view of the ocean from our balcony until the morning smokers chased us back inside. Beds were comfortable. We were given a DVD rental card to watch movies in our room. I checked a couple of times at a kiosk near the Palace Tower first floor elevator and the top movies were always rented-out. LAGOON AND POOLS My wife did not like the fact that the hotel does not have a beach directly on the ocean. Hilton did do a good job with the lagoon, however, which directly connects with the ocean. The lagoon’s chairs are a hot item in the morning, so reserve them early. You will see people riding paddle boards and snorkeling, but the depth of the lagoon is very shallow in places. I was impressed with the variety of fish in the lagoon and noticed sea turtles would come in every morning. We did not like that Hilton does not use lifeguards at the lagoon or pools, especially with all of the kids running around. My daughter and I tried snorkeling one morning. Although there weren’t very many people in the lagoon, the water was not very clear and had an oil slick on the surface which went away the closer I swam toward the ocean bridge. I assume the pollution was from suntan/sunscreen oils. It would be nice if Hilton could somehow keep the lagoon water clean before it mixes with the ocean water. I’m sure it’s not very healthy for the ocean life. We hung-out mainly at the large pool with the waterfall. It was a great place to catch some sun, and we rented a cabana for the day and had some great drinks. We tried the other pools, but the large pool in front of the Makai was the best. SHOPS We didn’t really go to many of the shops on property, but my daughter did find a good deal on a GoPro camera at the dive shop near the Dolphin encounter. The man who works there was very helpful with information on the GoPro she purchased and nearby scuba dives & snorkeling. We did frequent the nearby Queens Marketplace. The ABC store (Island Gourmet Markets) has great snacks and souvenirs at a good price. We also liked Malibu Shirts in QM that offers vintage Hawaii T-shirts. MEALS This was by far the best continental breakfast I have ever witnessed. You will find a good selection of fruit, rice dishes, and breads. If you don’t care for omelettes, waffles, French toast, scrambled eggs or meats, the continental breakfast will offer you plenty. I did like the omelette station on the full breakfast buffet. We ate our other meals in Kona, Waimea, and the nearby Queens Marketplace. You really need to leave the mega resort area and venture into town for the better meals. Yelp your meals. ACTIVITIES If you don’t have a car and have plenty of money to spend, you will be happy staying a few days on site and spending your money at WV (and the nearby Queens Marketplace by trolley). A luau and dolphin encounter are on site and the Blue Hawaii helicopter tour is only a few miles away. Don’t forget there are plenty of diversions on the big island 15 minutes to several hours away. The island offers incredible scenery, Kona coffee tours, manta ray dives, and an active volcano (if a natural disaster is not occurring). We did have a car, but we will have to save the coffee tour and volcano for our next visit. We did not like that this hotel is a front for the Hilton Grand Vacations timeshare, which you will see at every corner disguised as “activities”. You will be offered a discount for activities if you agree to sit through a 1.5 hour timeshare presentation. We agreed, but ensure you allow for up to 3 hours of your time for the presentation. In all fairness, I did chat with some of the activities/timeshare employees about the best companies for ATVs, zip line tours and helicopter tours and they did offer good advice. SERVICE Overall, expect outstanding service at Hilton WV. Check-in was smooth, and our bags were delivered to our room quickly. Poolside service was also excellent. The only gripe I have is that I drove around the parking lot to pick up my family and accidentally drove into the valet lot. A valet worker spent a good 5 minutes drilling me on how I got into his lot and that I shouldn’t be there. The “yellow gate” was open and there is not a sign telling drivers to stay outside the gate. I made an honest mistake and there is no reason to be a jerk. SUMMARY If not for the inconvenience for commuters and general upkeep needed, Hilton WV would be an outstanding resort. Would I stay at Hilton WV again in the future? Perhaps, but only if I used reward points and were still a gold HHonors member. My family doesn’t see the value in staying at Hilton WV on money alone. The Marriott next door is smaller and has a beach, so there are other options in the area.

Property undergoing major renovations.

Many facilities not operating, even though not impacted by construction, including very limited operation of boats around the property. This resort is older and offered no poolside wait staff, no access to poolside food, and only one functioning poolside bar. The location is beautiful, the dolphin experience was fabulous. The luau was overpriced and tired. The lagoon area is perhaps the most inviting place to swim and hang out, but again, no easy access to food and drinks. The landscaping and clear water with many sea turtles various kinds of fish, etc., is beautiful. Perhaps after this update the property will be back to its former glory days!
