My wife and I had a wonderful stay. We were only at the Hilton for one night, but it was a wonderful place. Good food, many activities to engage in and memorable place to watch the sun set.

THE FOOD AND DRINKS WERE VERY EXPENSIVE. TRANSPORTATION IN THE RESORT AND THE SHOPPING SHUTTLE WAS POOR. NEVER ON TIME AND ONLY PARTLY RUNNING. WATER - $6 BOTTLE. INFORMATION AS TO EVENTS ON THE PROPERTY, ETC., WAS NON EXISTENT FOR THE FIRST FOUR DAYS. THE GROUNDS WERE GORGEOUS BUT SORELY NEEDED A CAR TO GET AWAY FROM THE RESORT TO EAT AND FOR WATER AND SNACKS. THE $25 BUFFET WAS REALLY LACKING FOR THE PRICE - ADDITIONAL TAX AND TIP. FOOD WAS ONLY OK. EVERYONE (NOT ON COVENSION TAB) THAT WE MET WERE BRINGING IN GROCERY BAGS, ETC. WE HAVE TAKEN AT LEAST SEVEN VACATIONS WITH APPLE AND LOVED EVERYONE OF THEM. WE MADE OUR RESERVATIONS THROUGH YOUR PHONE VACATION PLANNERS AND WERE VERY SATISFIED WITH THE.

I recently spent 4 nights at Hilton Waikoloa. I was anxious to see how the hotel had weathered the years as I was a guest at the grand opening of this property about 25 years ago, can't remember exactly. I was not disappointed at all! You would never know its' age! The rooms and all the public areas were in great shape and the staff was extremely accommodating. The resort is huge and never did I see anything but smiling staff and cleanliness in general. The new tram seems to operate a little faster though the boat service was disappointing with only 1 boat operating and only after 2pm. Perhaps the occupancy rate was low, but seriously--one boat? The automated arrival sign would advise you the wait for the boat going in your direction would be sometimes 23 minutes. So of course the boat was full when it would come, oh well. My only other concern was the selection of food available on the resort. The sitdown dinners are very limited now. There is KPC which is steak/seafood with great oceanside dining, great service, but the menu is quite limited. The kitchen is extremely accommodating in substitions and adding a lite cabernet sauce to a somewhat dry steak. Other than KPC you have a choice of a very good Japanese restaurant or the Chinese one. If you were here a week you would be in bad shape if you did not asian dinner! They have opened a Mexican offering but it is like fastfood and served on plastic plates. Tableside guacomole was tasty. There is a lounge with live entertainment which also served an extremely limited selection at dinner. On the bright side, the breakfast buffet was excellent to have included in the price of the hotel package. There was also a Dining Discount card available for $29.99 which instantly gave you 2 $10 coupons for use anywhere in the bars/restaurants and a 10% discount on subsequent purchases for the week of your stay. That card paid for itself in one meal and saved a good amount of money when eating in the hotel. Overall, I would stay there again in a heartbeat but would arrive with a few food items and certainly a stash of rum to drink from my lovely balcony in the light evening breeze.

This property is becoming old and dated. The boats and train show lots of wear, the pools and signage are tired, but most shocking to me was the condition of the dolphin pools. Several large dolphins being contained in some very tiny pools does not speak to me of respect for those intelligent animals. The flamingo and tortoise enclosures were also far too tiny and unstimulating for the occupants. Plus, unless you love the sound of thousands of birds squawking in the trees all evening and night, you will never sleep here. Everything here costs far more than it should, but nothing lives up to the hype. Give this old hotel a big miss.

From start to finish you find friendly and helpful staff. Think the only time I had to wait for anything was initial check in. Valet is the way to go. Just call down ahead of time with a time you want your car and it will be waiting for you. Breakfast is great no matter what your diet is. Everyone wants to make sure you are enjoying your stay.

Stunningly beautiful, but not great for solo travelers

The Good: -Absurdly beautiful grounds. Lots to see. Massive...you could walk around the resort all weekend and not run out of things to check out. -Lots of space for relaxation: hammocks, benches, chairs along the poolside -Shopping within walking distance (including a supermarket with relatively inexpensive food) -Staff was very friendly and attentive -Hard to gain weight here because you’ll be exploring quite a lot with all of the artifacts and displays to check out -Beautiful (non-beach!) coastline just steps away to explore (I saw a LOT of sea turtles walking along the outer perimeter of the hotel grounds) -Nice tram to make getting around easy if you’re tired of walking -Rooms were clean, though maybe a tad dated -Good dinner options, though you’ll read a little about breakfast in “The Not So Good” below -Sound of the ocean will rock you to sleep at night The Not So Good: -The gym (weights area) is awful. No windows, feels like a closet, minimal equipment. I was shocked to see so much money invested into so many things but then see a gym straight out of a middle-America Holiday Inn. -For solo travelers this isn’t a great place to stay. All of the bars close by 10pm, except for one, which is open until 12, but is a little dive-y and generally void of a good crowd. If that’s what you want, it’s great, but if you’re trying to meet other solo travelers...you may meet one or two, but that’s about it. This is less the hotel’s fault and more my own as I should have expected that being on a resort in the middle of nowhere would be like this. LOTS of people on honeymoons/anniversaries. -The breakfast is okay but way overpriced ($35, I think?). My biggest gripe with it isn’t the price, it’s that I am a vegetarian and thus eat a lot of eggs as a source of protein when traveling, but the scrambled eggs are that crappy powdery stuff that’s nutritionally void of anything you’d normally get from an egg. Crappy hotels usually use that stuff, I was SHOCKED to see such an expensive resort going that route. There is an omelette station, but the line can be very long and you can waste a lot of time waiting to get a decently hot breakfast out of there. Seriously, guys: ditch the fake eggs. You’re a pretty expensive, supposedly high-quality resort. Use real eggs. -You’re somewhat in the middle of nowhere. Be prepared to drive fairly long distances to get to anything else on the island. *Make sure to get a rental car* -The beach isn’t as close as I thought it’d be. It’s a bit of a walk away, far enough where if you’re carrying anything with you, you’ll probably want to drive. Overall: It’s great for couples celebrating something. The grounds are gorgeous. The staff was superb. You won’t find yourself bored. You can see where they cut corners, which will bum you out given the price you’ll pay, but overall they get it right. For solo travelers: go to Kona or to one of the other islands, unless you absolutely feel like you MUST see the volcano. Maui and Oahu are much better options.

This resort has it all. Food, pools, beaches, golf, fun! We just came back from an awesome weekend here. Stayed In the Makai wing with an ocean view that I requested as an upgrade for$99/ night. I felt it was worth it. They have a tram or a boat to take you from one end of the resort to the other, but we walked and enjoyed the grounds. The hallways are like mini museums with Pacific island displays on one end and Far East displays on the other. There are things for the whole family to enjoy. The pools are awesome for kids, with Jacuzzis for adults. Dolphin encounters, nice restaurants with a variety of foods. It's a resort so things are a bit pricey. We dined at the Kamuela Provision Co. (KPC) which was excellent. Highly recommend. Had Big Island breakfast buffet, which was pretty good. Also tried Dona and Tony's Pizza which I wouldn't recommend. Worst pizza we ever had, especially for over$20. Burnt, barely any sauce or cheese. Bleh. The resort is huge so it never seems very crowded. Even check in was a breeze. With the exception of the pizza place, I highly recommend this resort!!

We were surprised...

I am diamond at Hilton and was treated as such on this short stay. We had a suite overlooking the dolphins as an upgrade (thank you Hilton Waikoloa Village). We were out and about and didn't use the pools. The buffet was good but could use some cheeses. Climate control was fine. Bathroom could use an upgrade. Yes it is spread out and there are steps...but it is usually a pretty view so rest and look around.
