Very Good for Shorter Stay
MarkOMN,
Thu Aug 25 05:37:37 EDT 2016
My son (11) and I stayed for four nights arriving August 20, 2016. Our main focus was diving and relaxing in the pool in the afternoons, and we left feeling that our expectations were met for the most part. The staff was very welcoming and any reported issues were addressed in a timely manner. The resort is somewhat dated and the smaller size was good for our four night stay. If we had brought the entire family (2 adults and 2 kids) I'm feeling that we would have to include a few days of outside excursions to keep the kids from getting a little bored. On the good side... -- The staff was very good and willing to assist in any way. -- The daily activities are posted on screens and you can pick up a copy at the concierge desk each morning - this was very useful. -- It was rather humid and we didn't even consider bringing long slacks for dinner. Most other guests felt this same way, and there was a bit of flexibility in a couple of the restaurants. We really appreciated this and so did most of the other guests. -- Movie night on the beach was outstanding. The weather was just perfect and we could have slept outside that night. This was probably the most relaxing part of the trip for us. -- The pool area was well maintained and while not a large pool for kids by resort standards, it was just fine for our trip. I could see this being a bit crowded during busy periods. -- We used the Hobie Cat, kayak, and snorkel services from Pro Dive Mexico and these were no charge. These were great and I highly recommend them. -- The protected swimming area has a good break wall and the swimming was good for kids. Quite a bit of fish activity for those wanting to snorkel. -- The area itself is south of Playa del Carmen and away from the crowds. Very nice and relaxing. On the Not-So-Good Side... -- Overall, the resort was missing the attention to the little things. Some examples were broken clothes line holders in bathrooms, leaky showers, broken curtains, light bulbs out, etc. Not major items, but enough of these add up to give you the feeling that the resort is somewhat dated. -- Our shower area leaked quite a bit and we lived with a few towels on the floor during our stay. Not just the curtain area, but the seal agains the walls. -- In general, the air flow was poor in the rooms and throughout the resorts. This included most of the restaurant areas, restrooms, and certainly the elevators. A few guests joked that they could put video screens in the elevators, but not fans. -- No ceiling fans in the rooms and air conditioning was poor. We would leave our room in the morning with the shades closed and the air conditioning would cool the entryway, but the temperature of the main part of the room never cooled - no matter the temp setting. -- If you have kids and they want their rest at night, get a room furthest from the lobby area because live music is played most nights until beyond 11pm. Our room was on the fourth floor near the lobby and it sounded like they were on our patio. As for food, we enjoyed Portofino and everything else was about average for an all-inclusive setup. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to family and friends with the understanding that a full-week stay would certainly demand a few days of activities offsite. More>

Terrible experience

I have been in this resort only 24 hours and I can say that this is by far, the worst all-inclusive resort that I have ever experienced. I want to start with the resort itself... rooms very outdated, smelly and old. They will accommodate you in lower floors that have lots of moisture so you will ask for another room and they will suggest you a "good price" upgrade to floor 7 which they call Preferred. The waitress here are hit or miss ( I had great experience with Julio at Ocean Grill but not so good with Sergio) The resort is very small and I can only suggest it for family trips of no more than 3 days because it will get very boring. I usually travel 3-4 times a year in different places but this tops the worst resort ever. I can keep going but not worth my time. Spend your money somewhere else (Rui or Secrets highly recommended from my own experiences) Servants here are rude and never smile AND that's a big turn off for me. I will update my review for the days coming with pictures as well . Very very disappointed More>

Definitely worth a return trip!

I read lots of reviews on TripAdvisor before we left, and I'm convinced that the bad reviews were either written by disgruntled employees (of which there seemed to be few if any), people who just aren't happy no matter what, or people who had a travel agent who "over sold" the property. First, let me confirm some positives of the other reviews: 1. The staff is incredible - so warm and friendly and helpful. Especially Fernando (beach server), Salvadore (Barracuda bartender) and Francisco (World Cafe and outdoor grill server) 2. Every inch of the property is very well maintained. 3. Our room was spacious, well appointed (only one drawer but lots of closet shelves) and very clean; beds and pillows very comfy. 4. The air conditioner in our room rocked, but if you live somewhere that doesn't have much humidity (unlike Houston where we live) everything is going to feel damp to you all the time. If you don't like that, don't go to the tropics in the summer. 5. The entertainment in the various venues ranged from amusing to amazing (The Three Tenors), but it was all worth seeing for something to do later in the evening. Now to confirm/refute some of the negatives: 1. Wi-fi in the rooms is spotty, so if you are depending on it to do work, you'll need to go to the lobby. Fortunately we were able to "unplug" after the first couple days. 2. This is definitely a family resort, but the adults only pool and restaurant (Oceanaire) were very nice. If you don't want a lot of kids around, don't go in the summer, spring break or winter holidays. We were expecting it, but the other couple with us had had been to this resort twice before but never in the summer and were rather offput by what they felt was a large number of loud, ill-behaved kids. 3. We had some really good food, even some excellent food, and some mediocre food. And there was no pattern to it other than personal taste and their execution of a particular dish. The adults only seafood restaurant (Oceanaire) and the other poolside restaurant (Patio Grill?) were where we had consistently the best food. 4. We were there 7 nights, and most nights at least one of the restaurants was closed as their kitchen was supporting that night's special event. Read the daily itineraries and plan for it. 5. We are early to bed/early to rise people, so this resort was great for us. If you like to party late and sleep late, go somewhere else. Nothing to do late and need to get up early to get beach chairs. More>
