Wonderful staff

We recently stayed at this hotel as a large group. We were a little surprised by the level of work being carried out, as we were previously advised it was "light renovations" by travelbag. After one week of our stay the main reception had dramatically decreased to make way for the new lobby, and the main restaurant above was shut down, so all meals had to be eaten at the bar by the pools/beach We had issues with our room; poor air con and a major leaky roof following a storm (water pouring through the light fittings! Eeeek) We were offered another room and had to move ourselves due to the time of the night, and it was much better for us. I suffered accidents due to the concrete being wet, and also a terrible slip resulting in a head injury on the tiled ramp leading to my mothers room for which the doctor was called. I know that signs were dotted around, but the walk ways need addressing before someone is seriously hurt. It has taken weeks for the lump on the back of my head to go down. Just be very cautious as you walk anywhere as all surfaces that are wet end up like a skating rink (including the concrete) But apart from the issues I have raised we had an amazing holiday. The beach was stunning, and the staff were absolutely amazing! Victor, Alex, Erika and Alfredo took care of so well! We really could not praise them high enough. So friendly, kind, thoughtful and wonderful with our children. We miss them dearly! We would like to return once the renovations have been completed just to see if it is as good as barcelo has planned. I would like to think that he would keep on such wonderful members of staff, as they truly are wonderful people More>

Should have closed weeks ago to let work finish.

I feel compelled to write this review to offer some balance. After recently spending time at this resort but reading people who must have been there around the same time giving it an excellent score we wondered if we were in the same hotel as them? Anyone who was there around the time the pool was shut for several days and 12 hours a day building and digging will know what I'm talking about. (start of September). Thankfully the management/owners have now done the right thing and closed to complete the rebuilding of this resort (NOT a REFURB). This comes as little consolation to those who had their vacation spoiled. More>

A haven - read my review if you are concerned about building works!

I have to admit I was quite apprehensive about my holiday to Allegro Playacar having been informed about the building work and seeing some of the reviews on here. When we first arrived at the hotel there was quite loud drilling occurring in the lobby area, but honestly that is the only time it "annoyed" us throughout the whole stay. The work is being carried out mainly in the lobby, meaning the main buffet is now by the pool which I assume is usually the aqua bar. This is fine as its plenty big enough! We found the resort fairly empty overall so it didn't bother us too much. Work is being undertaken on a few rooms but we were put in a room right at the back nowhere near the works - and with an ocean view!! Anyway enough about the works, nothing can change the fact that this resort is just lovely! The staff in particular made our experience outstanding; they are so genuinely kind, attentive and friendly. Standing out in particular for us was Alex a waiter at the buffet at the resort, we will never forget him! A true credit to the resort and I hope my comments can be passed on to him!! Also our cleaner Lucia done a fantastic job every day, our room was spotless!! Speaking of our room, it was wonderful, we had a huge bed and brilliant air con, it could do with a bit of updating but then this is why they are doing so at present! The beach surrounding the resort is just stunning... You honestly could not ask for more! And there's always plenty to do around the resort during the day if you're not busy with an excursion- we particularly enjoyed hiring a kayak in the sea which is free to do and so much fun! The best part of the resort for us was the food! We didn't have one bad meal, and the buffet is a different theme every evening which really mixes things up. Along with this we were lucky to stay at the hotel on Mexican Independence Day, this was really celebrated in style!!! The Mexican and Italian restaurants are also excellent, very classy and the staff are amazing in there too! Overall we had an amazing time at Allegro Playacar and would definitely return. I'd urge anyone concerned about the construction work to not be... It doesn't ruin your holiday at all and you will have a fantastic time if you don't let it! Thank you all of the staff for a wonderful stay and a fantastic first trip to Mexico! More>

Fantastic relaxing break

My boyfriend and I had a fantastic time at this hotel, it was the perfect location for a relaxing couples holiday. The beach is probably the best I have ever seen, crystal clear water and beautiful white sand. The building work as previously mentioned did cause some minor disruption to the food available and noise in certain areas of the hotel, but did not in any way spoil the holiday. Having to pay for wifi did not bother us, we used it as a way to spend time together and enjoy everything around us! If we needed wifi for checking in on our flight, we just walked the 3 minute walk to starbucks. The hotel is also in walking distance to Playa Del Carmen (45 mins there and back) but we usually got a taxi for 180 pesos. The service we received was fantastic, the waiters/waitresses could not do more for us. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would come back. More>
