What to Know Before You Go

Helpful Phrases

A little preparation can go a long way in helping you feel confident and ready to explore. Traveling in the United Kingdom won’t present a language barrier, but what about visiting other countries? Many of Europe’s largest cities will have plenty of locals who speak English, but it’s still a good idea to learn some basic phrases for your destination’s hotels, restaurants, and attractions. Not only is it good etiquette, but it’ll help you be more independent1.

Safety & Travel Restrictions

When planning a trip to Europe, always check government travel advisories at the State Department before traveling outside the U.S. and research entry procedures for your destinations.

Seasonal Considerations

There are wildly different climates across the continent, but in general, peak season throughout Europe is June–August. You’ll have warm weather, plenty of outdoor activities and festivals, and it’s a wonderful time for beaches, but with that comes the crowds. Shoulder seasons from April–May and September–October offer mild weather, smaller crowds, and more budget-friendly accommodations.

Winter holds its charms too, with storybook Christmas markets. Although it can get quite cold in the north and at higher elevations, southern Europe is milder and more laid-back during the off-season2.

Entry Requirements & Documents

A valid passport with at least six months of validity is required for entry. Allow up to six weeks to renew or get a passport. You will also need to apply for an electronic travel authorization if you’re headed to the United Kingdom, and by 2026, this will be true across Europe3.

If you want to escape the crowds, head to a smaller city or an island during shoulder season. If you’re traveling with kids, larger cities like Barcelona, London, and Edinburgh provide ample activities for all. For romance, you can’t go wrong with the Greek Islands, Spain, or Italy.
