Get to Know the Dominican Republic

Step Into History

The Dominican Republic is a vibrant cultural tapestry of influences and is home to a wealth of historic landmarks, diverse landscapes, and natural wonders. Whether you’re a history buff, adventure traveler, nature enthusiast, or just looking to plant yourself on some of the finest beaches in the world and dance the night away, it’s the perfect place to start your story.

The capital city, Santo Domingo, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was founded in 1498, making it the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas2. Across the island, you’ll find the contributions of each culture in every aspect of life.

Get a Feel for the Weather

The climate is tropical and warm year-round, with December through May boasting the driest, most pleasant weather. The wet season lasts from June through November, and it can get quite hot in summer3. The northern and eastern parts of the island receive more rainfall. Coastal areas tend to be warmer and more humid, while the mountains can get cooler and have more varied microclimates4.

Travel Essentials to Pack

When packing for the many places to visit in the Dominican Republic, make sure to include layers. For the coast, you’ll want lightweight clothing, but for the mountains, take long sleeves, pants, and a fleece. It’s also a good idea to bring hiking boots, a waterproof jacket, and to cover up when you leave the beach. Bare arms and legs are considered inappropriate when you go into town5.

As far as documents go, you’ll need a passport with a minimum validity of 6 months, plus an electronic entry and exit form, which can be submitted prior to arrival1.

What to Do in the Dominican Republic

Experience the Must-See Beaches of Punta Cana

One of the best places to visit in the Dominican Republic, with 40 miles of palm-studded sands and crystal blue water, Punta Cana is a picturesque paradise. All that’s needed is a good book, a cold drink, and a spot to lounge. Two of our favorites are Playa Blanca and Bavaro.

If you’re looking for excitement, take advantage of the exceptional scuba or snorkeling, participate in the vibrant nightlife and festivals galore, or try your luck at some of the glitziest casinos in the Caribbean6.

For family-friendly activities, visit Scape Park for ziplining, cenote swims, and Taíno cultural exhibits or Katmandu Park for laser tag, rides, mini-golf, water slides, and a 3-D cinema7.

Stroll Through Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial

Within modern Santo Domingo, the Zona Colonial area is like walking across time with 11 blocks of charming cobblestone streets and architecture dating back to the 1500s. Also beloved by locals, you’ll find a bustling cafe scene with exceptional culinary contributions of Taíno ingredients, Spanish cooking techniques, and African seasoning traditions. The city also boasts plenty of parks, live music, dancing, museums, and art galleries8.

Explore Puerto Plata & the Northern Corridor

In Puerto Plata, powdery sands, towering mountain ranges, and the sparkling waters of the Atlantic create your ultimate paradise. Adventure travelers will love the 27 Waterfalls of Damajagua. With a guide, trek through dense jungle terrain to navigate waterfalls by cliff jumping, taking natural slides, hiking, or climbing down ladders6.

Go Kiteboarding or Windsurfing in Cabarete

Just a day trip from Puerto Plata, Cabarete is a favorite for active travelers, with steady trade winds perfect for kiteboarding and windsurfing, plus a relaxed beachfront scene the whole family can enjoy9. Lessons are available for beginners, lifeguards are present, and you’ll find fabulous beachfront cafes and a vibrant community7.

Visit Samaná Bay

For a family-friendly excursion, take a boat tour with a marine biologist for some humpback whale watching from December through March. The area is also home to laid-back towns that feel more like cozy European cafe culture, so if a slower pace is what you’re looking for, this spot is ideal9.
