Checking out tomorrow after a 5 day stay. I thought I should write this review before I check out and see our bill!! I'm sure we spent a fortune, which is my own fault and not the fault of the resort, so don't want that to color my review! This is a beautiful resort, and we had a great time. The views are spectacular, especially at sunset. The rooms are spacious and very clean. The beds are VERY comfortable. The open air lobby is really nice as are the gardens next to the lobby. My younger son loved the pools and the pool slide. Service was fantastic - ESPECIALLY the front desk, but also the maid service, bellhops, the wait staff, the people at the poolside towel stands - even security who helped us locate a shopping bag my son had misplaced upon check-in. My husband is Titanium and they were able to give us a room upgrade, which I know they can't always do especially during a busy season, and I really appreciated the effort - it made our stay even more special. The food was really good, but super expensive ($16 for a kids meal). We could have saved a lot of money by eating off site more, but it is so convenient to eat here - and like I said, the views are spectacular. The little store they have on site has a good selection of not only snacks and drinks, but really beautiful souvenirs (I tried to buy things that were locally made and they had a pretty good selection). One day they had local craftspeople set up tables to sell their wares which was a nice touch. We really enjoyed the Kapa poolside bar and restaurant. The food and drinks were excellent, and we loved the live music by the poolside. The only negative I have for our entire stay is that the Kapa bar closes at 8pm. The first night we had to eat at the "fancier" restaurant as it was the only one open by the time we checked in. It was good, but we really prefer a more casual atmosphere like the Kapa bar. I wish it stayed open just an hour or two later. Although, I have to admit that it seems that Maui is an early to bed early to rise type of place. I would definitely recommend this resort - it exceeded our expectations and I have to say is even nicer in person than in the photos, which is not what I usually find.
Marriott makes it right!
We had the pleasure of staying at this resort for the second half of my husbands 40th birthday trip. The first half was spent up in Kapalua so we had a nice contrast in stays. The hotel and grounds are just beautiful. Love the open air lobby and warm greeting upon arrival. The staff at the Marriott was very friendly and accommodating. We arrived around 10:30am and to our surprise our room was ready. We used points for our room and paid for an upgrade to a partial ocean view. Unfortunately we were disappointed when we arrived in our room. It was a very nice room but the view was not what we had hoped. When bell service delivered our bags the first question asked was if our room was okay. When we told him we had expected a partial ocean view he called down to the front desk to request our room change. He said while there would not be anything different for our first night that they would move all our belongings the next day and upgrade us to an ocean view in the most ideal location on property. They also refunded the first night of the upgrade we had expected. While we were disappointed we were very pleased at how this mistake was handled. Marriott took care of everything the next day and Aime at the front desk couldn't have been more kind and informative when contacting us to make our room change. Our new room was perfect and the view was stunning! Thank you for making it right Marriott! Our room in Hale 4 was worth the wait. This hotel has everything you could as for. The pools are beautiful and the kids had a blast on the water slides. Teri at the adult pool gave the best service and made us feel right at home. Each morning we walked down to the Whale's Tale for breakfast. I recommend the french toast and the açaí bowls. It's also a great little spot for lunch. We enjoyed the best mai tais on the island at KAPA Bar & Grill. Humble Market Kitchin has an amazing happy hour that is not to be missed. The location of this hotel is just perfect. You have two great beaches within walking distance and I actually preferred that it that way rather than having a beach right in front of the hotel. Just sitting on the lawn in front of the lava rocks and watching countless sea turtles swim was mesmerizing. We enjoyed long walks on the Wailea beach path and the sunsets were just beautiful in the evenings. I loved the convenience of having the shops within walking distance. Island Gourment was just a 5 minute walk and had everything we needed. The shuttle service at the hotel was also a great convenience and took us to several restaurants during our stay. We really enjoyed our stay at this property and were very sad to leave. We will definitely return in the future. Thanks again Marriott for helping make our first trip to Maui so wonderful.
Great location, great hotel!
In the beginning, I was hesitant to book this property due to hearing mixed reviews of hotel and location. I'm so glad I didn't listen. This was exactly what we were looking for. My husband and I were on our babymoon and wanted a relaxing hotel with great amenities, views, etc., close to restaurants and snorkeling. There are 4 pools (one which has slides and other items for kids; one is adults only). I will say if you are looking for a hotel with large pools, this may not be the place for you; the pools are on the smaller side. We are more beach people. We walked to the beach nearby and would use the chairs and umbrellas there. The snorkeling here was amazing. We saw more diversity than we did at Molokini. The hotel restaurant appeared never to be that busy even though the hotel was sold out. We enjoyed our dinner there one night. I thought it was one of the better meals that we had.
This is our second stay here. My husband and I came for our babymoon. My husband is a platinum member. We had told them I was pregnant before we arrived. Upon check in they upgraded our room and gave us the use of a cabana. There was also a congratulation gift in our room for the baby. A really nice touch to make us feel very welcome. Platinum members get a coupon for a free coffee and breakfast pastry. You can use these at the Starbucks in the lobby which saved money everyday. The remodel to the pools was really nice. We stayed a week and wished we could have stayed more, so relaxing. Hopefully we will be back now with our son someday
Some great service, some not so great service
First off, the staff could not have been more friendly and helpful with the exception of our experience with the pool. I called the resort a couple months before our arrival and spoke to the recreation staff about reserving a cabana space at the pool and I selected 2 day beds at the adult pool. The day we checked in for the day beds, the pool attendant that day told me that anyone could use the day beds and you didn't have to pay if no one was using them. I asked why then I paid and he shrugged his shoulders.Someone was sitting in one of the daybeds I had reserved and the pool attentdant said he didn't want to ask her to leave, so I had to ask the woman to leave since I had reserved that spot. Later in the morning I went up to ask the pool attendant when we were supposed to get the waters and snacks mentioned on the website and he said I was supposed to get them when I checked in (although he was the same person who checked me in) We were in the pool when the server dropped off menus at the day beds. When we got out of the pool and wanted to order lunch, no one came to wait on us. I went up to the pool area and asked one of the servers who told me to put a towel on top of the day bed and that would be a sign to the server that we wanted to order. No one came for awhile so I stood up and started waving to a server who did come down. She told us she was very busy and probably wouldn't see the towel so if we wanted service, we should go up to the pool area. We did get to order lunch and after one incorrect delivery, we did get our food. Later in the afternoon, the server came to settle the check. What no one told us was that the area next to the pool was under construction and we spent the whole day watching and listening to the noise of a worker going back and forth with cement in a motorized bucket machine. So, I paid for something that other people got for free, got little to no service from the pool and wait staff and was never told about the construction although I did get a front row seat watching a concrete worker go back and forth dozens of times. I had called in advance of my vacation to ask about where the best place might be to rent a cabana/day bed and was never told any of this. The next day at the pool when we sat in regular, free lounge chairs, I saw that all the cabanas were already filled with towels and had reserved signs on them, as well as menus on the chairs. There was nothing like that for us on the day beds we reserved. The difference in service was startling. I do think the pool staff on the second day seemed more responsible and probably better trained than the staff on my first day. My other problem was that there was a dripping, clear, sticky substance on the door to our lanai. I called housekeeping on our first morning there to ask for the door to be cleaned and it was never cleaned during our stay. The resort is beautiful and the front desk staff and valets are top notch. I can't praise them enough! The pool & housekeeping experience however left a lot to be desired.
