Wonderful staff on the Events part. Ghalia was excellent helping us coordinate my daughter's party. All of our guests were amazed. I also want to thank the scuba instructors which guided my son and I throughout 3 days of trainning and education to obtain our diver certification. Emilia, Jonathan, Julian and Hugo were excellent all toghter. The food was extremely delicious every single day. The 3 restaurants within the resort are Top class, I would amply recommend and come hungry because it was just exquisite. On the reception or front desk staff needs to be more welcoming and should accommodate more to guest upon arrival and check out. It's the small things that count a lot. I would also suggest a more variety of beers for pool areas. And before I forget the staff from entertaining department were also wonderful. Those guys really make a difference too. Over all I would like to say Thank you to all and every single worker from Viva Wyndham Maya for the hospitality and for making a first class event on my daughter's XV year party.
Watersports best part our trip
The best part of our 6day-5night stay was the watersports (catamaran, windsurfing, paddle board, and kayak). In particular, Jonathon and Alan made our trip enjoyable. They focused on safety and teaching us as much as possible in each lesson. Thankfully the sports were included in the price of the hotel, but the hotel could definitely use more instructors of their caliber, especially when the groups for each lesson are more than 4-5 people. Some comments on the rest of the hotel: Antonio was an awesome bartender and made our drinks perfectly, the raw salad bar with lentils was delicious, the pillows on the beds were very uncomfortable, the air-conditioning didn't work in our first room and only partly in the second, and the pools close at 8pm (far too early). This is the first all-inclusive we stayed in and we're not sure if we'll do it again, but it was a very enjoyable week. Would recommend if you take advantage of the water sports.
Not what I expected
The property is very beautiful and well maintained. The service and the food leave a lot to be desired. Breakfast has no bacon or sausage and the only breakfast meat that most Americans would expect is the ham on the omelet station. Lunch is not much better. Often we went off property for dinner because the buffet was just not very good and had very limited choices. The premium Mexican restaurant was actually pretty good but the Italian place was horrible. Don't waste your time. From about 3:30 until 6:30 you can expect at least a 20 minute wait for a drink at the bar and remarkably there are no fans in that area so you will be dripping in sweat by the time you get it. It is faster to walk all the way to the front of the property and get a drink than it is to wait in that line. There are very few activities for older kids (my daughter is 11). The trapeze is fine but for kids they have to be there at 8 in the morning. That have archery but there is always a line so you have to wait quite a bit to try it. This was a very disappointing trip for me and my daughter.
The 1st year we went in 2016 it was amazing, but we chose to go back the following year and paid extra to get the same room we didn't get bc they let someone stay extra 2 nights, but we could have moved up to that room after the 2 days. It was very irritating that we had paid so much extra and didn't get what we requested, so 2018 and this year we chose another resort. Lost our business...
Perfect for what we wanted
Had a great vacation at the Viva Wyndham Maya. We were looking for a place that was cost efficient, but still on the beach and we were pleased! The beach is beautiful and we were very pleasantly surprised by how great the restaurants were: the food, service and experience. Don Diego was a lot of fun, and Portofino was more upscale and felt like more of a nicer restaurant. Waiters were very attentive and made sure our dinner experiences were great. We didn’t get the chance to eat at Miramar, but it looks like it overlooked the ocean. Also the resort drinks were better than some other places I’ve been. I loved the playacar area, it felt very safe and there were hardly any vendors selling items on the beach. Also the close proximity to downtown and the playacar shopping plaza (right across the street) was very convenient and the resort had a lot of fun activities for kids (and adults) like a trapeze, archery and tennis courts. Cons: the pools close at 8 there wasn’t a whole lot of things to do at night for us, but they had a few shows for the kids. The buffet area wasn’t air conditioned so it would get uncomfortably hot. But not the end of the world though since we did come during the hot season, and we mainly just ate there for breakfast. Also be aware that if you check in after 3 you can’t get dinner reservations for that night, so either make other plans before or be prepared to eat at the buffet. It would be nice if when you booked your trip, Viva Maya would offer to pre-schedule you a reservation for that first night. There are definitely things they could change to make the experience better, but for what we paid, we were pleased. If you are looking for a more upscale all-inclusive, there are lots of other options in the playacar area, but this was perfect for what we wanted and we would come back again.
