We've been planning this trip for years so we were very excited. Other friends also booked to be there at the same time. Since it was our 23rd anniversary we booked the top of the line room. I couldn't find exact pictures of the room on the resort website but did find them online on another site. So what we booked was an ocean front jacuzzi room with a welcome package. Also my friend had been communicating with the resort and asked for all 3 rooms to be together. Well we get there and the rooms are in the same building but 1 is on the first floor, 1 is on the second floor and ours is on the 3rd floor and the resort has no elevators. We get in our room and it does have a king bed, an ocean view and a jacuzzi tub but its not what I saw pictures of. Its all chopped up, not wide open, the jacuzzi tub is about half the size I was expecting, the shower is wide open no privacy and the shower is small with only a half door so that every time you shower you have no privacy and no shower door means your room gets soaked. I slipped twice in this room because of the floor being wet. They don't give you extra towels and you get either a hand towel or a wash cloth, never both. The room where the toilet is is tiny, my knees almost hit the door when sitting. We never received our welcome package and they never restocked our mini fridge. Our friends booked the same type of room, their jacuzzi tub was twice as big as ours, and they had a separate bathroom with a big shower and privacy. They received their welcome package and their mini fridge was re stocked everyday. The housekeepers do a great job at keeping things spotless and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. There are very few places with AC. A few restaurants and your room. The buffet, the theater, the disco, the coffee bar and 1 restaurant does not have AC. Its hard to eat in a buffet while your sweating! The buffet food was ok but got repetitive. The restaurants were all very good! The pool is nice but its so hot that some days even the pool is too hot. The beach seating is plentiful. The seaweed was really bad. We were there 9 days and only went in the ocean 3 days because the seaweed was so bad, this is something they don't show you on the website. The whole area is slippery around the pool and bar, I saw several people slip and fall. There was a coffee maker in our room but the coffee bar was very good so we never used it. All liquor is bottom shelf liquor, very few brand names. We had a good time because of the company we were with but the resort itself was a little disappointing.
You get what you pay for
Booked the Viva Wyndham Azteca because 8 days for the quoted price seemed like a very good deal, but, as the title of this review says, "you get what you pay for". Check-in was easy enough, though we had to wait for our room until after 3:00 p.m., which is common in many resorts, so no complaint here. The resort is somewhat small, which is okay, just be aware there are not as many activities here as you may find in a larger property. As for the room, don't expect much, far from luxury is the best way to describe it. I paid for an upgrade to a pool view, and admit it was in a good location, just a short walk from the pool and snack bar. As for the room amenities, they are essentially non-existent. The mattress and pillows are EXTREMELY uncomfortable, I cannot stress this enough and I'm not overexaggerating. Another issue is the "king-size" bed is actually a full-size bed, so just be prepared if you are expecting something bigger. The mini-fridge is sparsely stocked, and they don't refill it, good luck getting additional bottled water. The toiletries are dispenser filled shampoo and body wash, and these are so watered down you can't even get a lather. I will say there was plenty of hot water in our room, which is good. Don't expect wash clothes, because there aren't any, even when you ask they don't leave any. We also had to ask for toilet paper, because we ran out and they don't leave extra rolls. The television service has only a limited number of channels, most in Spanish, so if you enjoy watching TV before you go to sleep you'll likely be out of luck. The A/C is not good at all, you can expect the room to get cool, but only for a little while late at night. The patio area is very small, big enough for two plastic chairs and a small table. I did have some items taken from the room the first couple of days, so we started placing everything in the safe, which you must pay extra for to use. This fee is added to your bill at check-out, along with an additional "ecological" fee, which is not much, but it is extra. The buffet is really not very good, add in the fact it's open air dining and rather hot and humid while you're trying to eat a meal. They have three specialty restaurants, a Mayan food which I didn't enjoy much, an Italian which is pretty good, and an Oriental which I wasn't expecting much from but it ended up being the best of the three. Just make sure you make your reservations at guest services in the mornings for these restaurants, otherwise you won't get in. Drinks here were pretty watered down, and the beer was never cold, especially at the snack bar by the pool. The drinks tasted a little better in the main lobby bar. Though it's not the fault of the hotel, there is a major issue with sargassum seaweed in the Caribbean right now, almost making it impossible to comfortably enjoy the sea. The beach is quite large, and there are plenty of loungers available, either in the sun or under the palms. The pool is not very big, the water got pretty warm during the day. The hot tub is small, and doesn't get hot. There is no swim-up bar, and also no bar available on the beach. Lounge chairs are hard to come by around the pool. Will say they are pretty good with their beach towel service, especially if you want to exchange towels during the day, just make sure you don't lose your towel cards or they'll charge you for them. All the staff were very friendly, including the bartenders, wait staff, etc., so there were no issues here. So even though this isn't a glowing review, I refer back to my previous statement of getting what you pay for. It's a lower tier club resort, that's decent, but the amenities aren't great.
Great smaller resort with all the amenities!
We really enjoyed this resort! It was a great size, the rooms were nice, the pool and bar were in a great location. The beach was really nice and the best was all the palm trees planted on the beach so there was no fighting for a sunny or shady spot. The only downside was maybe the food, the buffet was good but it did get a little boring/repetitive after 4 or 5 days. The staff was amazing and they are constantly cleaning/maintaining things which was nice to see as someone staying there. Highly recommend!!
The room is so mouldy. I was sick after this trip. It is my worst carribbean vacation. All bed sheet felt wet. The resort is just like enclosed. There is no AC In the buffet area. You just have two bottles of water and some pops for free for all inclusive resort. However, the resort is well kept clean. The location of resort is good. Most of staff are nice and friendly. The food is almost the same everyday.
So many rules!!!
If you're looking for a fun, carefree vacation, stay elsewhere. Let's start with this - absolutely no drinks in or around the pool. In 31 degree weather, you are forced to stay off to the side and sweat it out while you have a drink, or leave it aside where it melts while you swim. The towel police by the pool are constantly swarming people. They stand around the pool with their clipboards watching intently for any form of misbehaviour. As soon as you enter the area they take your room number in case you leave your towel for more than an hour, so they can charge you $20 a piece. They allow kids to run at full speed around the pool, jump, dive and be fully nude in the pool, but adults are under strict supervision by the watch of the security armed with the clipboards. Speaking of charges, EVERYTHING is an extra fee. I've never heard of a hotel charging for use of a safe or not restocking your fridge. The bottled water situation is ridiculous - a ploy for you to have to spend extra money at the gift shop. After the first day, they no longer provide you with bottled water in your room. The tap water is not drinkable and smells like sewage - don't even brush your teeth with it as you will likely become ill. We had to write a note to the housekeeper with a generous tip for them to leave a few extra for the next day...by a few, I mean 2 small bottles. They have purified water at the bar where they provide small cups and have signs posted everywhere that you are not allowed to refill bottles. Signs everywhere!!! Rules, rules, rules!!! They only allow you to book 3 a la cartes for the week even though the restaurants are empty. I have to speak about the crowd as well so you know the demographic of this resort. We typically meet new people and make vacation friends everytime we go away. This time is a little bit different. We are one of the very few groups that speak English - most of the crowd is from Europe and there seems to be a huge language barrier. The people are nice but we just can't communicate. The crowd is mostly mature adults or young families with small kids. We fit somewhere in the middle of that. I have mentioned several times in the last few days that I feel more like I'm in jail and less like I'm at an all inclusive resort in Mexico. Go have more fun than us at a different resort.
