Viva Maya September 11 thru 19

We stayed at the viva maya. And it was not that great. The pool water was so dirty we would not let our grandchildren play in it. The rooms are small and the air conditioning would not go below 77 Fahrenheit. There was no air conditioning in the buffet area but they did have big fans. The service was very good and the place is clean. The shower would not work correctly something was broken.

    Viva Maya does it again!

It's always a great visit. This was our 5th trip. The Animacion staff, especially Jesus, was so kind and engaging. They work hard to make sure you have fun and enjoy your vacation. Beaches here are just perfect. Clean, beautiful palm trees and MORE than enough chairs. The rooms have had a refresh and are clean, and the AC works well. I love this resort as it brings together people from all over the world. It is a cultural immersion from the moment you enter the resort. The staff here is top-notch, friendly, and some of the hardest working folks you will see. Thank you, Viva Maya, for another remarkable vacation.

    Wonderful Experience

On the evening of our arrival it was pelting down with rain. The reception politely suggested we relax, have dinner and will be escorted to rooms after. Rooms were clean, however there were no door hangers whatsoever and horse airer Laundry on the balcony in the complex. We stayed for a week and looking forward to my return. Why!!. Food excellent, variety on point. Clean throughout the complex, regularly daily. Staff overalll were all polite, hard working, always smiling and happy to assist any time of the day. Particully the lunch, dinner staff members named William, Jazmin and Max who were so so polite and helpful. Antonio the Pool/Bar Attendant were very very helpfull. Well done guys you made our stay so happy. Def will return.

The truth about the Viva Maya... 😏

You can review a lot of different things at this resort because it offers you so much! The rooms...super clean and comfortable! The bars...huge choice regarding the drinks and really good (personal recommendation...the Tequila and the Lobby Bar in general because they always provide you with glasses)! The pool(s) and beach...clean, and super close to each other. You'll always find a good spot and the beach is absolutely beautiful!! The animation...amazing variety and there is something for everyone! All of these things have one thing in common...the people! 'The most beautiful house only becomes a home to you if you have the right people in it.' Every single person which works in that resort is so amazing! From the cleaning staff, to the bartenders to the animation people (my personal favorites were Carolina and Lua - they were me Mexican soul sisters and just a lot of fun! 😄). I have never been to a resort where I immediately fell in love with every single person! The entire staff works really hard and are always super lovely and kind at the same time! I can only recommend this resort to everyone! If you only have half of the vacation that I had, you will have the best time of your life in there! I can also recommend to check out the viva maya Instagram account, so that you'll get a better idea. Normally, I don't write recommendations but after that vacation, I just had to do it...thank you so much so the entire staff at this amazing resort! 🙏😊

    Mixed Bag - Detailed Review

We stayed at Viva Maya by Wyndham from September 19 to 25th 2024 for our honeymoon. This was my first trip to Mexico and my wife had been to Puerto Vallarta previously. I’ll start with the good: 1. Live entertainment: The nightly show at 9:30pm was good more often than not. Our first night was a game show that didn’t do anything for us, but night two was a dark circus theme with acrobatics and was amazing. It was the high-point of the week, entertainment wise. Just prior to the circus show, the lobby had a live guitarist playing covers of well-known songs from the last 40 years. He was fantastic. I’ve been thinking about guitars ever since, I wish I got his name. 2. Neftali at the lobby bar was great. Always had a smile on his face, happy to serve us, and happy to recommend drinks. 3. The beach was top notch. It was clean, and well kept, and you could walk out a good distance before it got too deep to stand. Lots of places to sit, though finding shade wasn’t always very easy. The not so good: 1. Drinks were super weak and inconsistent. I don’t really drink at all and am quite a lightweight as a result. I think the night with the guitar player and circus I must have had 10-15 drinks, and while buzzed a little, it quickly faded. That many drinks should have had me on the floor. I don’t think I could have ingested enough liquid to get drunk enough to let loose and have fun like I hoped. Whether at the café or one of the bars on site, the drinks seemed to change depending on who was making it or what day it was. We were never quite sure what we were going to get, but they were generally pretty good, just inconsistent. 2. Jonathan at the front desk was completely disinterested both when we checked in and checked out. I wasn’t expecting a red carpet, but a “Welcome to Mexico” or “Thank you for coming to Viva Maya” would have been nice. I had emailed ahead to try to book the honeymoon package and there was no mention of it. When we tried to get a late checkout as our flight was delayed 4 hours by Hurricane Helene, we were told it was not possible as it would have to be arranged 24 hours in advance. He didn’t even look to see if the room was booked. Not a smile, not a goodbye, just took back our bracelets and sent us on our way. 3. Regarding the Hurricane, I can appreciate that it wasn’t predicted to hit the resort area with any real force, but we learned later that there was a hurricane warning for the area. We heard nothing about it at any point. There were no warnings from resort staff, or flyers under our door advising of what to do in case of emergency. It was like nothing was happening at all. We would have had no idea what to do if it did hit us hard. 4. We tried to do laundry one day. We reached out at 9:30 to ask, and they said they would send someone over right away to pick up our laundry. We immediately flipped the do not disturb sign around so that they would knock. Nobody came right away, so we went to breakfast. When we returned to the room after 11:00, the laundry was still there. We called and were told there would now be an extra 30% surcharge if we wanted the laundry done the same day, since it was after 11:00. Apparently we were supposed to stay in the room until the laundry was collected, however long that would take. Would have been nice to be told that. My wife spoke with guest services for quite a while, and they were not prepared to do anything. So I went and did the same for probably half an hour. I expressed my dissatisfaction with the position the resort was taking, trying to get a few more dollars out of us and advised it would adversely impact the review, since we needed the laundry for the next day’s excursion, and we requested the service at the appropriate time. We viewed it as no fault of our own that it wasn’t picked up, so why should we have to pay extra on top of what is already a quite expensive service for the few items we wanted washed. Eventually it went up the ladder enough that it was done the same day without the extra charge, but what a needlessly aggravating process. 5. The honeymoon package. I emailed ahead to try to arrange the honeymoon package which was supposed to include a room upgrade, extra a la carte dinner reservation and sparkling wine/fruit plate. There was no record of my request in their files, so we had to go sit at guest services. The couple sitting next to us were a few minutes ahead in the process and were given t-shirts in their sizes. We eventually were given no room upgrade, only two reservations, and two large t-shirts. I haven’t been a size large since probably the 10th grade. We apparently couldn’t get another reservation because it was booked, but every night we saw an abundance of empty seats at the restaurants, so I definitely question that. And the fruit plate went uneaten as it wasn’t great either. 6. Food repetitive. Most lunches were about 95% the same as other days. Dinners had a few nights that were unique, but for the most part they were the same as well. Food was fine, but didn’t really stay hot, so if you weren’t there right at opening, it was going to be warm-ish food for you. Desserts were not great. There were a lot of different options, none were enjoyable to either of us. 7. The pools were all closed by 8 or 8:30. This was surprising. Even the adults only pool was closed early. We were shocked that we were unable to swim or sit in the hot tub in the evening. We waded out into the ocean a little, but with no life guards or lights, it didn’t feel particularly safe. Maybe this is a common practice, but it definitely surprised and disappointed us. 8. Luggage was required to be left out of sight during check in and check out. They were quite insistent that we leave our suitcase at the entrance and proceed to the desk without it. Couldn’t really see it from where we were, and this made us both feel uneasy right out of the gate. I appreciate they probably didn’t want luggage dragged throughout the lobby, but there has to be a better way. 9. Lastly, we really enjoyed our excursions which were not arranged by the resort, but as one can predict, there are street vendors everywhere at every touristy destination. So after our second excursion, having been called out to by hundreds of vendors over the 12 hour trip, we get back to the resort and discover it is “Mexico Night”. A Mariachi band was playing which wasn’t our cup of tea (bring back my guitar player PLEASE!), and dinner was Mexican themed (unfortunately for us we had our Mexican restaurant reservation the night before and Mexican for lunch during the excursion so we were over it). The 9:30 show was traditional Mexican dances which wasn’t interesting to us either. But the worst part was that the resort let street vendors into the resort and they set up their stalls in the walkways leading to the rooms. So we literally could not get to our room without having to walk the gauntlet of vendors, all promising expensive items for “only ten pesos!”. If you want to have the vendors inside the resort, fine, but don’t make it a requirement that I have to fight my way through just to get back to my room or get to the buffet. That was really disappointing. I know the bad seems to dramatically outweigh the good, but overall it was still a pleasant experience. We weren’t expecting the moon and stars considering it is certainly on the “budget” end of the spectrum, but there were a lot of unforced errors that seemed unnecessary that tainted the overall experience. Maybe our expectations were wrong, maybe this is better than what would be found at other similar priced resorts, I can’t be sure we don’t have the means to be regular travelers like that. But there is so much potential to make it so good, and some free and easy changes that could be made that would have really improved the experience.
