The vision and dream of respected hotelier Laurance S. Rockefeller. More than 37 years ago, he chose a patch of black lava in an inaccessible area, with two beautiful beaches, to create a work of art that changed the Big Island of Hawaii. Rockefeller envisioned a resort of world-class standards - complete with the hotels, golf courses and homes.
The first step was Mauna Kea Beach Hotel in 1965. In 1994, the second half of the dream was fulfilled with the opening of Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel. Steeped in Aloha, the classic elegance perpetuates the true Hawaiian traditions of the islands. And in June 2018, the hotel officially became The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort. The contemporary feel of Westin Hapuna Beach Hotel is manifested in its bold nature. Working together, these two distinct hotels comprise Mauna Kea Resort and create an outstanding experience.
All guestrooms are ocean-facing revealing the long inviting expanse of Hapuna Beach, each with spacious private balcony and double doors allowing for the trade winds to breeze through. Luxurious interiors are highlighted by a selection of natural materials, including rich woods and fine fabrics. The palette of chosen colors reinforces the sand, sea, and sunset environment afforded by the hotel's pre-eminent location.
The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort is situated on 32 oceanfront acres, nestled in natural bluffs overlooking the silky white sands of Hapuna Beach. Hapuna Golf Course features 18-holes of Scottish links-style championship golf designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay. Taking advantage of the dramatic natural contours of the land from the shoreline to 700 feet above sea level, it offers spectacular views of the Kohala Coast and Pacific Ocean while majestic Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and the Kohala Mountains form the backdrop.
In ancient times on the resort site, freshwater springs bubbled to the surface during heavy rainfall. These artesian fountains provided respite and renewal for travelers along the Kohala Coast. Thus the area was named "Hapuna" or "Spring of Life" in the Hawaiian language. This depiction of water became the symbol for the The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort.

Best spot on the Big Island
We have stayed everywhere on the Big Island and this is our favorite spot. Great beach, relaxed staff, comfortable rooms, well designed common areas with many small break out spaces and good food at the restaurants. Nice also to share facilities with the adjacent Mauna Kea which is just a 15 minute walk away, or take the shuttle. We much preferred staying here over the Mauna Kea as it feels less crowded and more spacious due to the multiple levels of the property.
Great Staff and Resort but a bit far from a lot of activities!
Aside from the breathtaking open air lobby with a view so beautiful it almost looks fake if I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, our room unfortunately was RIGHT across the construction so the noise was frustrating to say the least. The buffet breakfast was our favorite part, omelet and fresh fruit on the daily. The lemonade drink at the pool was also another favorite - highly recommend adding some fresh mint it makes the drink even better! Though we debated returning to Westin Hapuna in the future, Gena from the front desk is the sole reason we will consider returning because she went above and beyond. I had to give her two hugs when leaving. She was courteous, patient, generous, informative and just all around a very pleasant woman who carries herself with such grace.
The Westin Hapuna Beach resort
We feel the customer service has gone down a bit since our last visit. This is the reason for our 4 star rating. The location of The Westin Hapuna beach resort is lovely. The sand is powdery soft. In the evening the stars are striking. Grounds are very clean. Property is picturesque. Our room was very comfortable. We particularly enjoyed the lanai furniture. We had two high chairs with a table to overlook the ocean and a lower patio sofa of sorts, all were practical and comfortable. We appreciated having a small refrigerator. We stayed on the South side of the property. We heard some construction noise when sitting on the lanai in the morning but it was at a minimum due to our distance away...back up beeping does take away from the tranquil environment at times. The lack of customer service at the front desk is shocking to us for the quality/price of this resort. The desk staff is consistently cold/indifferent/aloof. No mention of our status, no information given about breakfast, we had to request the details at check in. We experienced a security concern, we did not feel that they took the incident seriously. Upon check out we were not asked "How was your stay?" or told "We hope to see your again in the near future"...nothing, simply a cold transaction to settle the account. Ginger at the breakfast check in desk was a sweetheart. Eric, our breakfast waiter was amazing. His service was exceptional, so smooth, friendly and attentive. Maria from housekeeping was very kind and helpful. The breakfast buffet was kept clean and replenished promptly. The selection was very good. There is a lovely beach hike along the shore if you turn right leaving the ocean portion of the property, you can walk all the way to their sister location. Fantastic views. Our room had a lot of tiny little ants...but it is a tropical location. Additional mandatory fees: $30- resort fee $25- for self parking
Great for adults, not for families with kids
Upon arrival, this hotel is wonderful. Staff are kind, the property is beautiful, and the grounds are immaculate. If you’re here for the beach, you’re in luck. It’s perfect. But if you want to use the pool or are traveling with kids, you’re screwed. There’s a kids pool and hot tub and an adults pool and hot tub. The hot tub at the kids pool is roped off and broken (photo), the kids pool itself is unheated (also broken) and staff response is “we’re not sure when it will be fixed.” Evidently it’s been like this for weeks and they never informed guests so you could make another choice of hotel before you arrived. So what you get is a resort where families with kids are treated a though they’re less than, with no urgency to create an environment where they can enjoy the pool without shivering. It’s 78 degrees and sunny today and there’s no one in the pool at 12pm (photo). Everyone else is playing on the rocks or at the beach because the water in the pool is too cold. Even when it’s beautiful weather, the frigid kids pool is little more than a decoration. What a disappointment.
Lovely and Relaxing
This Hotel is lovely and has recently been acquired by Westin, therefore the quality and sensibilities that are synonymous and consistent with Westin hotels is apparent. The back drop of the breathtaking beauty of Hapuna Beach makes this hotel hard to beat. There are 2 pools, one adult and one on the lower level for kids. Restaurants are good and service is served with aloha. The only cons are that the hotel is huge and at times can be maze like, although there are numerous elevators, there will still be a bit of walking as to be expected at such an expansive hotel. During this time there was construction going on as I believe the hotel is adding luxury residences along side the hotel. That said, the sound is not so loud or jarring that it disrupts your relaxation and the hotel has Hawaiian music constantly playing throughout the grounds via “invisible “ speakers that seem to be nestled amongst the trees and ground cover. It’s truly paradise ❤️
