Great location, stylish hotel but disappointing
Good things first: the Laylow is a stylish hotel that's located in the middle of Waikiki with a host of eating options on your doorstep and the beach two short blocks away. The staff are very friendly, the rooms are a great size, the coffee in the lobby is excellent and there are fun touches like free shaved ice daily between 2-3pm, free flip flops and ukelele lessons. Despite this, I was disappointed by our Laylow experience. I am a Marriott Bonvoy member and had booked our two adjoining rooms directly with the hotel. When I booked I asked for our rooms to be on a high floor, mindful of reviews here about noise. I also requested an early check in as we were arriving about 8am, though I was aware that might not be possible. As it turned out we had to wait, drooping in the foyer after an overnight flight, until 2.30pm for our room. Guaranteed check in time is 3pm so that wasn't exactly early. Another day I noticed another family waiting to check in (they had to wait half an hour) and they were offered free pineapple to snack on. We were offered nothing. And as for the high floor - we were on level 6, of 16. Reception is level 2. So my requests amounted to nothing. And I understand that happens but it would have been nice if we at least had been given an apology. The only explanation was that there are not many connecting rooms, but if people have to check out by 11am why did it then take 3.5 hours for our room to be ready? Our connecting rooms had no view whatsoever, were quite noisy from the airconditoning in the International Marketplace and also from loud amplified music in the bar area until 10pm on at least two nights. The kind of loud music that earplugs doesn't drown out. Our rooms were stylish and clean. However they were also poorly lit at night, short of hooks in the bathroom for towels (if you have only two hooks and one rail, how do you hang two bathtowels, a facecloth, a hand towel and a bath mat?) and the pillows were hideous: overly large and overly stuffed. I found the bed quite comfortable but it is on the softer side, my husband hated it. Also a security bug: you need to use your room key to access your floor in the lift. But anyone can enter the stairwell from the lobby and access every floor in the building that way. The pool area as others have pointed out is very small (and shallow, only 3" deep) - quite often there was no seating available at all. I realize this all sounds highly critical. It IS an appealing hotel, we loved the look & feel and we loved the location. But we never felt particularly valued to the staff and that noise - even requesting particular room types in advance doesn't guarantee that you will get a quiet room. So it's a guarded recommendation from me. Protip #1: if you want to order things online and have them sent to the hotel before your arrival, this is possible. I noticed a small pile of packages waiting for guests to arrive. Protip #2: Overnight parking is $45 but you can park overnight in the parking lot round the corner on Sunset (next to Ross) for only $32 or for free alongside the canal one block to the east.
Never Wanted to Leave
This hotel was absolutely amazing, down to every last detail. The coffee and food is delicious, the pool area is quaint and impeccably clean, and the rooms are comfortable and beautifully designed. I really felt like I was getting a luxury experience. If anything, I was surprised it wasn't more expensive. I'm not one for huge resorts that feel impersonal. So the fact that the bartenders remembered my name, and the person working the coffee bar remembered what I had gotten the morning before, was lovely. The hotel has a shop with some cute local goods. Obviously nothing is "cheap", but I also wouldn't say that the items were unreasonably priced. The drinks and food were really tasty. It all seems to be carefully crafted, which is again something I appreciate in a "boutique" hotel. The only thing I noticed was that the service at the pool was a little slow. However, it's a 20-step walk to the coffee bar and restaurant host stand if you really wanted to put something in. I'm a huge coffee snob, so the Hideout coffee bar was a dream to me. The pool is a bit small, so I made sure to get there a little earlier to make sure I got a chair, etc. that I wanted. Honestly, this hotel fit my travel style to a T and I can't wait to cross more Autograph Collection Hotels off my list.
Love this place! The hotel is cleaned and beautiful. It’s located near so many restaurants and shops in walking distance. Staff is amazing and so accommodating. Special shout out to our housekeeper AMOR she does a great job and is so sweet. Thank you!
Really unique hotel on the main retail strip off waikiki. Great vibe, excellently appointed rooms with great views. Staff really go out of there way to ensure a happy stay. Caitlyn and Naimu were wonderful at check-in and out. Activities and free bine rental. Small pool but main beach is literally a block away. Would definitely recommend.
Nice but service is a little questionable
I’m a big Bonvoy fan and I really like the Autograph collection. The Laylow is hip, clean and very well located. The outside terrace bar and the pool area are awesome. We even took ukulele lessons one night. My only complaint was around the service - two failed room service orders and little to no service while around the pool.
