Greening Your Life: Part of the Apple Vacations Greening Your Life initiative, this property utilizes seawater cooling instead of cooling towers to lower carbon dioxide emissions, energy, and water consumption. Guestrooms also feature low-flow showerheads, toilets, and sink aerators to reduce water consumption. LED ceiling lights are located throughout the property.

Biological pest controls are used in lieu of chemicals with all landscaping endeavors, while vermicomposting reduces the amount of green-waste from kitchen areas. By-products are then used as a nutrient rich organic fertilizer within herb and vegetable gardens. Waste cooking oil is collected and processed into biodiesel fuel, and wet waste from kitchens go to pig farmers for feed in an effort to reduce landfill waste. Disposable containers are also made from biodegradable corn-based products.

    Not what I expected for the price

    I’ll start by saying the staff here are absolutely fantastic - from the valet to the front desk to the breakfast staff. They couldn’t have made us feel more welcomed/ appreciated. The rooms here are dated - do not let the pictures on the website fool you. From the tile on the balconies to the carpets to the chipping on all the furniture - you can tell this place needs a renovation. The hotel has the most bizarre design you could imagine, with the parking garage being between the rooms and the beach. This results in “ocean view” rooms with having yes, an ocean view, but they also have fantastic views of the parking garage between them and the ocean. Maybe the rooms in higher categories don’t have this ridiculous view obstruction??? The garage really takes away from your view. Another point - I never brought this up with the valet or hotel because I just knew they wouldn’t stand behind it, but I noticed scratches on my rental car that I don’t recall being there before I dropped it off. I’d also like to point out that there are several dolphins staying in a tiny (tiny for the size of these dolphins) pool within this hotel. I’m sure the hotel justifies it by saying this is actually good for the dolphins but just use your common sense - they’re charging $300 per person for you to get in that water and play with the dolphins - so whatever the hotel claims about the well-being of the dolphins, just know that they’re only here as a money maker for the hotel. The hotel has a wall of VERY famous people that have stayed here and I know that those people would NEVER have stayed in the room that I was put in, so I imagine their suites are nothing like the basic rooms they have. Overall, this was below my expectations for a 5 star hotel.

    Wonderful Kahala

    We had an amazing stay at the Kahala. Our room was large and quiet, facing the golf course. Staff were very attentive. Kyle at valet services helped us checked in and waved us good bye on the last day. Enjoyed the beach right in front of the hotel for swim. Seeing dolphins daily was a special treat. Hope to return soon!

    Hawaiian Hospitality at its Finest

    I have just stayed at The Kahala again for the third year in a row. I travel a lot for business, so I stay in a lot of hotels. The Kahala is just very special. The Aloha Spirit the staff conveyed to me from the moment I arrived at the airport in Honolulu when I was picked up until my departure set the tone. James Kepa, The Front Office Manager, did an exceptional job providing my airport transportation, and getting me checked in quickly when we arrived at the hotel, and personally escorted me to my room. He was efficient, friendly, and offered to help me in any way to make my stay pleasant. He was very flexible to work around my meeting schedule in arranging my transportation details. As always, Kathy Morse, The Executive Assistant to Gerald Glennon, the General Manager, took care of all of the details of my reservations perfectly. My Hertz rental car was conveniently ready for me just outside the lobby in the circular drive, thanks to Dallas, their agent, and the parking attendants loaded whatever I needed for my meetings in the trunk before I picked up the car. The concierge staff was always offering to help, whether it was to provide directions, copy documents for me, or print my boarding pass. Also, the staff always addressed me by name, which I found incredible and exceptional. The hotel management and staff take a lot of pride in the hotel, and make sure that their guests experience its warmth and elegance. Mr. Glennon is an exceptional role model for the staff, resulting in the utmost respect for the guests, and every attempt is made to ensure that they have the best possible stay at The Kahala. He is well-regarded by everyone, and that positive attitude permeates everyone who works there. For families with children, the opportunity to spend time with the dolphins is very exciting. The pool and beach activities are convenient for the guests, and the staff seems to be on top of everyone's needs. The restaurant food is well-prepared and offers a large variety for guests to make their choices. The calm ambience in the main reception area where guests can comfortably sit and visit in this very elegant but friendly environment is very special. The hotel is just a few minute drive from the bustling Waikiki area, but it feels like you are on an outer island where it is quiet and removed from all congestion. After staying there these past few years, I have experienced a consistency that few hotels have on a continuous basis. Mr. Glennon's commitment to the hotel, staff and its guests makes it a pleasure to stay there. I definitely plan to return! Vivian H.

    Here are some pros and cons

    This is a very nice hotel, and we enjoyed our stay, but we will probably not return. The main reason we would not return is the quality of the beach - the swimming area is hemmed in by a big rock/reef area, and is quite shallow, although this seems to vary a bit by day. Also, the architecture of the hotel is very uninteresting - the lobby seems dated and the building itself is not very nice to look at. For the money we paid at the Kahala, we have stayed in much more impressive resorts in other areas. However, there are lots of pros as well. I think some families might prefer this hotel because of the dolphin program - I know my kids in their younger years would have liked this. Also, the resort is in a quiet area but is still very accessible to downtown, and there is a free shuttle to take you back and forth. This is nice, because sometimes you end up feeling trapped at your resort. You can stay here and have access to Honolulu when you want to get out. The restaurants are very expensive. We liked Hoku's, but were not happy with our meal at Arancino's. Overall, a good experience, but not the best we have had in our travels.

    Great trip in May! Excellent service throughout property.

    Time to introduce the 4th generation of our family to the Kahala! As always, an excellent time was had by all. We had our pictures taken by Macy (of Pacific Dream Photography, based at the Kahala). And she did an excellent job, and we had wonderful memories to take home.
