    Theft

After a very busy summer at work, my wife and I decided to book a last minute trip to a nice beach during low season in September last year to enjoy some good food, drinks and peace and quiet. Azul five had been recommended by a friend for its good food and friendly staff. As a one year wedding anniversary gift, my wife surprised me by paying a $700 upgrade for a swim in room ($100 per night for 7 nights). Upon arrival in the late afternoon, we were impressed with the welcoming staff and meticulously maintained grounds. We ate at the sushi restaurant our first night which was great for an all inclusive. Our ordeal started the following morning when we were awaken by the sound of a concrete pick axe. We tried to find out where this noise was coming from and were told a new tower was being built on the grounds adjacent to our room. Needless to stay, we had to keep our room door closed to minimize the noise and couldn’t enjoy our pool access due to the noise which continued all day. We asked to speak to a manager about this but were told he was unavailable that day. The beach was well maintained, but unswimable due to large amount of algae washed up on the shore so we had to use the main shared pool. Next disappointment was the closure of several restaurants which they attributed to the low occupancy level of the resort at this time of year. The remaining restaurants were jam packed with a very long wait. We were not informed of this limited restaurant selection when we booked. Wish we would have been told limited services would be offered. 5 days into our trip, the manager, Alvaro Perez, finally contacted us and agreed to relocate us to a room away from all the noise. After initially refusing any kind of reimbursement, he finally agreed to reimburse only 50% of the upcharge we were billed for the prior nights. He claimed we “used” the room and so should pay a part of the upcharge - we claim we would have moved immediately to a room without the upcharge fee had he or someone else been available to help us before and didn’t even get to enjoy the swim in due to the noise in any event. As we had prepaid, we had no leverage and had no choice but to accept their offer. On the bright side they did give us a free Bali bed for our last day. For several month, we were asked to be patient and that we would receive a reimbursement. They responded to our first 3 emails by telling us they were working on processing our request but now Alvaro Perez, the resort manager, won’t even reply to our emails. This is nothing short of theft. Long story short, this resort was overall good (in high season when all restaurants are open) but would be hesitant to recommend due to this dishonest behavior.

    Excellent family holiday

Just returned from the most amazing luxury 2 week stay at the Fives Azul & wishing we were back there. We travelled from the UK with TUI who provided a great service during the flight, at Cancun airport & throughout our stay in Mexico – shout out to TUI rep Kieren who gave us loads of useful info at our welcome meeting and helped us book a number of excursions. We were originally booked to stay at Tui Sensatori in Puerto Morales but switched to the Fives due to the building work there, and we’re so glad we did. On arrival we received a very warm welcome from all staff, and were handed a glass of fizz, juice or water as we were led to the reception desk. Check in was quick & smooth with Laura and the hotel were able grant our request for adjacent rooms. We were given wrist bands which included a chip that opened our door so we didn’t have to carry a key card around with us. We were allocated 2 one bedroom suites in villa 19, which is one of the newest blocks but furthest away from the beach & main pool, about a 10 minute walk. We didn’t mind this as the walk through the jungle / cenote was lovely (and shaded) especially when we got to see the spider monkeys & coatis. Golf carts ran continuously to transport guests around the resort and although there were proper stops for these, the drivers didn’t mind stopping to let you hop on at any point. There was a quiet family pool outside villa 19 with the Mestizo Mexican restaurant & bar beside it. We spent a few lazy afternoons here at the start of our holiday and enjoyed the peace & in pool jacuzzi. There were pools and bars next to each villa in the resort, and I’d recommend trying them all if you want somewhere quieter. We had a lot of fun one day where we started at the main pool and worked our way back to villa 19, stopping at each pool and bar along the way – some of the bars were swim ups, others were just beside the pool but the staff would bring our drinks to us in the pool. We spent most of our days at the main pool / beach area which was great fun. The kids & hubby joined in with beach volleyball at every opportunity and I loved the aqua aerobics at noon everyday. There were other activities too, including table tennis, a crazy game & question of the day which were fun to join in with. Huge thanks & shout out to Erick, Gustavo, Edgar, Jonathan & Valentin from the animacion team who kept us active during our stay. They were always happy, friendly & enthusiastic. We never had a problem getting sunbeds – in our first few days we were at the pool early (before 9) and got beds by the pool, after that we got beds on the beach, which I actually preferred as there was more shade and a lovely sea breeze. By early afternoon there were beds available by the pool as people moved around but we never felt the need to move, due largely to Guillermo & Raul the beach bar waiters who kept us topped up with drinks all day long. When we sat by or in the pool, Reuben & Christian kept the drinks flowing. The pool overlooked the beach & it was great to be able to keep an eye on the kids (aged 13 & 11) as they moved from pool to beach to sea and back again throughout the day. There were sandbags in the sea which didn’t look the prettiest but they were so much fun to climb on to look for fish & crabs. There was very little seaweed after our first few days, and the guys at the beach worked so hard to clear it when it did come in and it never affected our holiday. We didn’t use the kids club, which was for 4 to 12 years old, but did get involved in daytime teen activities & evening Teen Club. Although my youngest was technically too young for teen activities / club, the animacion team would often let him join in. Beach volleyball was a great way for them to meet other kids their age, and they’d arrange to meet up at Teen Club or the Plaza at night. The evening Teen Club wasn’t really promoted initially – we found out about it through word of mouth a week into our stay. After that the details were posted on the entertainment info board in the plaza so maybe another guest suggested this. The Teen Club is above La Brasserie and is run by Gustavo on a number of evenings each week between 8pm & 11pm – it has Playstation, Blackjack table, Jenga & other board games in a really cool setting that doubles up as a wine tasting venue on the other nights. Evening entertainment is pretty low key, usually a band on the stage in the Plaza, plus karaoke on Saturday nights & a fire show on Tuesdays. There’s also a market in the plaza on Friday nights which includes food, drink & local produce / souvenirs. My husband did tequila tasting at the market with Luis from the 1910 Tequila bar which was fun, and Luis also created a unique cocktail for me in the 1910 bar one night, thank you! We ate at all the restaurants except the adults only Pisco & Natura Day Club & Grill, and we ordered room service 3 times. Every meal we ate was delicious, whether it was breakfast, lunch or dinner and all the staff in every restaurant worked so hard to make sure everything was perfect. There was so much variety and we never got tired of the food. We especially loved Arezzo, Koh Thai and La Brasserie for dinner, Oriola and Sea Olive for lunch (Sea Olive had the best burger!), Flavours for breakfast & La Brasserie for Sunday brunch. We tried Sushi for the first time and the staff at Oka Sushi were great at advising menu choices for us. We didn’t have any problems making dinner reservations, which are done via the concierge located by your villa – you have to go in at 9am and can only book for the same day & following 2 nights. Availability was usually limited for same / next day but was never a problem for 2 nights later. We had Stephanie & Estafani looking after us and we were able to get the reservations we wanted. Estefani even booked for us one day when we couldn’t be there at 9am due to an excursion – we just gave her the details the day before and followed up the day after. Our huge room was kept immaculate by our maid Alfredo, who left fantastic towel animals and kept the fridge well stocked with soft drinks, beer, water & crisps. The grounds & pools were spotless and incredibly well maintained too. If I had to suggest improvements, there would be 2: Utilise the Zky bar for family based evening entertainment – we went in a few times between 8 & 10.30 and it was empty Review age limits on kids / teens clubs to have more suitable activities for tweens age 9-12 as too old for Azulitos & too young for teens (although our tween was allowed to join teens most of the time) In summary, we had a fantastic family holiday that exceeded all our expectations. Thank you to everyone who made our stay so special.
