Has gone down hill....
We were returning guests and were so impressed by our previous experience, that we decided to return..When we first arrived, the lobby had a blue tarp covering an area caused by a leak from a room above, It stayed like that for 5 nights. Our deluxe ocean view room was as before only the bathroom tile was cracked amd mold was in the shower. Dinner at the Terrace was disapponting to say the least. My chicken was raw at the bone and the potatoes were instant mashed. We ate at the lounge most nights. The pool area at the Grotto was a hot mess at 9:00am. Dirty glasses, masks, flippers everywhere. It was finally cleaned up at 10:30 am. While the staff was mostly friendly, the food, room and cleanliness has really suffered.
Fantastic Food, Fantastic Service
After the Buccaneer, other properties fall off quickly. The food was amazing, the service was excellent (which is saying a lot since most of St. Croix is quite comfortable being on "Island Time," The property was gorgeous with excellent snorkeling and beautiful secluded beaches. I love not having to go anywhere to see Moko Jumbies and the Coral Fire Dancers were amazing. highly recommend this resort over other St. Croix resorts. Would go there again in a hot minute.
Service at The Buccaneer is unsurpassed! EVERY single staff member goes above and beyond to make sure you have a wonderful experience. After reading the numerous great reviews written about the Buccaneer, my husband and I chose to stay here for our wedding anniversary and we’re so glad we did. We can definitely see why people choose to return to this resort time and time again. We had a lovely beach front room with an incredible view! It just doesn’t get any better than waking up to that turquoise Caribbean water and dining at the complimentary breakfast buffet offered to Buccaneer guests. It is filled with every fresh, delicious food item imaginable including a gluten free table! I was in heaven! In fact, all the resort restaurants offer an impressive selection of GF items. We highly recommend this beautiful resort with its spectacular service!
Wonderful wedding experience
We just had our wedding at the Buccaneer with 36 friends and family all staying there. The whole experience was amazing. The wedding teams do a fantastic Job and helped coordinate every detail for the whole year in planning the wedding. We stayed at the Buccaneer for 10 days and it was difficult to coordinate so many of our guests to do group activities, but the concierge team really helped us get the activities booked and set with our guests. We ran into some difficulties that were very stressful but outside of the control of the hotel, from a taxi not showing up at 5am, to a restaurant in Christiansted not serving us, and had a large group of hungry and tired family and friends- Joel was our super hero. He not only asked and listened to every trouble we had but helped make the rest of our stay so wonderful personally calling our other booked activities to Confirm our bookings and logistics in transportation. We will forever be grateful for Joel who helped fix a bunch of problems that were completely not caused by him and totally out of his control, but his extra effort made our honeymoon everything we always dreamed. Breakfast is included and hot snd delicious every morning. The breakfast host Melrose is a joy every morning welcoming you to enjoy a beautiful day in paradise, and ask to sit in Frances or Delma’s section, they are so friendly and make sure you have everything you need before even asking. I would recommend renting a car if you plan to do much off property as the taxis are their own union and very expensive and disorganized. The Buccaneer did a great job trying to help with the taxi situation but the drivers are out of their control and stop driving at 9pm. You’ll be glad to have your own ride.
Fantastic family resort!
My wife and I had wanted to take a trip to the Buccaneer for years and we thrilled that the resort met or exceeded our expectations in every way. We stayed at the Buccaneer from June 22nd through the 29th with our two daughters (age 5 and 7) and everyone really enjoyed the stay. We had booked a standard Great House room and added the 70th Anniversary package, and upon arrival we were thrilled when the front desk told us we had been given a free upgrade to one of the two-bedroom family suites. Typically we like being close to the lobby just for the convenience of being close to the front desk, shops, etc., but the suite we were given was the closest to the Great House so it was only a minute or so walk from the room to the lobby so it was perfect for us. Check-in only took a few minutes, and the staff at the front desk was friendly and professional. The two bedroom suite was perfect for us and the kids. The main bedroom had a king size bed, fridge, tv, etc but it also had a daybed in there with curtains so that instantly became the kids play area which was great since it kept all their toys and stuff off the floor. The other bedroom had two twin size beds, tv and dvd player, and an additional pull out bed so the suite really could sleep six if needed. With the 70th anniversary package a nice gift basket was waiting for us in the room, and each of the beds had a cute teddy bear tucked in on it for the girls which they flipped out about. It was also my wife's 40th birthday so there was a nice note and bottle of prosecco for her in the fridge which was a really nice touch. We really enjoyed the room and the space of the two bedroom suite, and we were really appreciative that the resort upgraded us for free. The property itself is massive, but there is only around 125 rooms so the pools and beaches were never crowded. Both beaches are public, so there were some non-guests at Mermaid Beach, but it wasn't an issue finding beach chairs at all. The pools are for hotel guests only and we didn't use the lap pool by the Great House at all, but the pool at Grotto Beach is new. The one thing that surprised us was how deep the pool was at Grotto Beach. At both ends there are stairs and it's shallow, but it quickly gets deep and goes down to almost 9' in the middle. We were a little worried when we got there that it would be an issue since our youngest isn't a great swimmer yet, but we just put some floaties on her and she was good to go. But if your kids can't swim that is something to consider because the shallow areas where kids can stand is relatively small. We did spend the majority of the time at Grotto Beach and the pool; there is a restaurant and bar there, and tons of people were out snorkeling every day. There is a reef that runs parallel to the beach so you can snorkel in just a few feet of water and see all kinds of cool marine life. The pool at Grotto Beach is a quiet pool and we would have enjoyed some music, but we had a lot of fun there. We did go to Mermaid Beach a fair amount as well, and we used the free stand-up paddleboards and kayaks, and had lunch at the Mermaid several times. The sand on Mermaid Beach isn't as fine as Turks and Caicos or Grand Cayman, but it is a really nice beach and the water is very clear. There is a reef a few hundred yards from shore that has excellent snorkeling if you're brave enough to swim out that far. We say stingrays, spotted eagle rays and tons of fish at the reef there, and many other guests saw sea turtles. The property is also very hilly, so keep that in mind if you have mobility issues. The resort does shuttle people around the property though, but we never used the service. But the hills do provide some amazing views of the island and we thought that St. Croix was without a doubt the most scenic island we have visited in the Caribbean. There were some rooms being renovated while we were there, and a few things here and there that needed repaired, but overall the property is really nice. The view from our room was amazing, every time we stepped out the door of the room we commented on it. As far as the food at the resort, for the most part it was very good. The free breakfast that is included in the room rate is fantastic. There are tons of options and they offer different items daily, have an omelet station, and will make eggs benedict, chocolate chip pancakes and other specialty items if you request it. The lunches we had at The Mermaid were also very good. The food is a little pricey but not outrageous, but it is a 4.5 star resort so that is too be expected. But the portion size was excellent and we really enjoyed all of the sandwiches and entrees we ordered, especially the pulled pork sandwich. The one item that our kids loved the most was the strawberry smoothies. They put ice cream milk in the smoothies so they taste like a strawberry milkshake. We got them every day and the bartender would basically make two for our girls and charge us for one which was great. We also rented a car for the week and ate most of our dinners in Christiansted which I highly recommend. There is some really fun things to see and do on the island, and tons of restaurant options down on the boardwalk. As I stated earlier, we purchased the 70th anniversary package when we booked the room, and I highly recommend it if you are planning on going out to Buck Island while you were. For $375 we got a $200 dining credit, 2 trips out to Buck Island ($75 value each person) and two spa services. With the package my wife essentially got the two spa services for free so we felt it was a really great value. We also got a really nice book that shows a history of the resort and the gift basket that I mentioned earlier. We also booked the room through the hotel website and after looking at many of the travel websites felt the hotel offered the best price. As far as the staff goes, we thought they were all great. Dion that worked down at the watersports shack on Mermaid Beach was a lot of fun and took us out on a kayak tour, and the woman that worked at The Terrace in the morning were always friendly and provided excellent service. Our favorite employee though was Alberga, the food and drink manager at the resort. Early in our trip he noticed I was wearing and Ohio State shirt and had gone to school in Ohio, so he came over and talked to us. After that he stopped and spoke to us every day and was one of the nicest and most professional resort employees we have ever interacted with. Our only negative issue with the staff was on our second day; our waitress at lunch brought out the wrong drinks, then two incorrect meals, and then took 4 attempts to bring us the correct check. But otherwise the staff at the resort was excellent. Overall we really enjoyed our stay at the Buccaneer and the island of St. Croix. If you have already made reservations and are looking for things to do you need to drive out to Point Udall and absolutely visit Buck Island. The beach there is amazing and is as good as the photos depict. We also recommend doing the hermit crab races with Tito and Sue (they have them at various restaraunts on different nights) and driving to the domino club and feeding the pigs beer...it's awesome. If you have any questions about the Buccaneer or St. Croix please feel free to message me, I'd be happy to answer them, thanks!
