    Concept is Solid...but in Practice STINKS!!!

    "OOH, THAT SMELL!!! in the words of Lynyrd Skynyrd. It's the first thing that hits you when you open the door to your room. Musty, dusty, mildew smell. Hard to tell where it was coming from. But we had to air out the room the whole time we were there. We checked out a few room..all were the same. And then the AC stopped working our last night. We tried to stay in the room as little as possible. Proximity to Westin was great & using the Westin amenities was a real plus. But we had to go back to the room to sleep..ugh. Little restaurant was nice. However in retrospect, nothing Sunshiny about Sunshine Suites. Not a good choice. And it would be so easy to clean up. And then they wouldn't have these myriad of bad reviews. Do they even care?

    Three star resort

    My husband and I stayed here for five nights the first week of January. It is a true three star resort. We read prior reviews, and we did not have any problems with mold. We did have a few problems with the room but they were resolved fairly quickly. The bed was comfortable, and we did not hear any noise from adjoining rooms, although we were on the third floor which was great. We had a king suite with a separate living room. I think ok for 2 and maybe a child. Please keep in mind that the rooms do not have any balconies. The staff is nice and were always available. If it were not for the amenities at the Westin across the street, I would not stay here, that makes all the difference. The location is very good and unless you want to explore the island there is no need for a car. Keep in mind that taxis are really expensive. Don’t expect much from the included breakfast and you won’t be disappointed. The decaf coffee was cold everyday but if you ask Evelyn she will brew a fresh pot. The restaurant on the property is very good.

    The Good, The Bad, and The Gross

    What many people describe as charming, I describe as out of date. I can get past all the updates that are needed for the amenities at The Westin across the street, but I could not get past some of the truly disgusting things. 1. The rooms were dirty, my feet were black when walking on the floor, and the smell of mold and mildew was overwhelming. The cleaning crew was very friendly but not much detail was put into cleanliness. 2. The first day we were there our youngest wet the bed during his nap, probably a combination of exhaustion from traveling and drinking ocean water. It is not something he does often. To my dismay when we pulled mattress cover back it was not water/stain resistant mattress cover and the pee had soaked all the way into the mattress. It was soaking wet. We promptly went to front desk and asked for a waterproof mattress cover. They did not have one, and said they don't have them on any of their mattresses. They sent the maids to the room and they just remade the bed! We quickly pulled back new sheets to let the mattress air out. Gross, just gross. There were TONS of kids at this resort so I can only imagine how many mattresses have been peed on. They took no steps to actually clean the mattress!

    It all ends with the good price! Dont be Fooled.

    We read the reviews and thought it would be a decent place to stay for the price. WOW were we wrong! Knew right from the get go that it was going to be bad. We had called in advance to have connecting rooms for our kids to stay in. When we arrived they had given those rooms away. Even better was our rooms were not ready until well after the 3pm check in time. After getting into our room my wife who has a great nose smelled what seemed to be mildew and mold. After a litte searching we found a bunch of black mold around the bathroom sink and shower. We let the front desk know and they said they would send someone to do a "deep clean." That did not help and it looked the same after. We didnt think anything of it until the first night when our son, who has asthma, started to have some trouble breathing. We didnt think much of it since we was getting over a cold. We got out of the place for the whole next day. Again the next night our son was coughing and having trouble breathing all night and worse than the night before. After talking to the front desk again (who most of them were rude when you would ask for something) we decided it was time to change our flight and get our son home and away from this place. It was convenient to have the Westin to use across the street. We spend all day when we were there at the Westin. This was the only positive. I would not recommend anyone subject themselves to this place or the mold until they can do a full redo of all the rooms. Have found many other reviews here that have the same issue. Dont waste your vacation on a crappy place!

    We really wanted to love this place, but we couldn't

    There are some things to love about Sunshine Suites Resort, but sadly there are worse things to hate. On the plus side, the location is great. It doesn't have ocean view, but it is a sister property to the Westin across the road where you get all the same benefits of staying there -- beach chairs and pool access, the ability to charge food and drinks to your Sunshine Suite bill, an excursion desk that will book your activities, etc. The Westin has probably one of the loveliest beaches on the island so this is a huge plus. Sunshine also has a restaurant on site, and the employees all seem very nice. But that's where it ends. Unfortunately, the mold and mildew odors in the rooms of this hotel are absolutely debilitating. The odor is so strong you can taste it. In fact, all my clothes came back reeking of the odor when I unpacked them. I'm sensitive to mold, so as soon as the odor hit me when I opened the door, I went back to the front desk to ask if ALL the rooms were like this or could they move us? They feigned surprise and offered to do a "deep clean" but I knew that wouldn't help. I was given keys to look at three other rooms, but all of them had the same headache-inducing smell. Our original room had a view of the pool (vs the highway or a hallway), so we decided it was the lesser of all evils and stayed in it. I remarked to my friend that a smell this strong could only come from carpets or walls being completely flooded and not dried properly, resulting in mold. But we were on the 2nd of 3 floors, so how could it be? Cosmetically, the place looked newly painted and decorated. Well after our second night there, we found out how the mold had taken hold: It rained heavily that day while we were out and when we returned to our room we found our carpeting was completely soaked-- as in puddle-deep soaked. It appeared a ton of water had entered the room from an interior wall on one side, most likely coming from a roof leak. Even the room below us (not occupied) had a large puddle emanating from the front door. At first, the front desk tried to pretend the water was from our air conditioner but they had to retract that when they saw the magnitude and depth of the flood in our carpet that spanned from the front door to the bedroom in the back (we had a suite). Even worse, all our belongings we had left on the floor were soaked. Our shoes on the closet floor got it the worst, including some lovely dress shoes and my friend's leather loafers. They were destroyed. We had to change rooms for our final night, so we repacked everything and were shown to a 3rd floor room in another building that had the exact same moldy smell but (thankfully!) dry carpets. When I presented my destroyed dress shoes to the front desk, I was offered a $35 deduction to our bill, the equivalent of one night resort fee. I had been really sympathetic and forgiving up until to this point, but they lost me there. Eventually, they deducted our resort fee for three nights (a total of $105) to make up for both pairs of destroyed shoes and the trouble of having to pack up all our belongings, move to another building, and then put our belongings out to dry in the new room. Having to do all this took a big chunk out of what was supposed to be our final evening in Grand Cayman. A $105 deduction on the bill was insulting to say the least, but we were just happy it was our final night there. What struck me most was I went from Grand Cayman to a week-long work trip in Florida and when I returned home and unpacked, everything in my suitcase STILL had the reeking moldy smell from Sunshine Suites :( Look, I don't wish this hotel any harm but they MUST do something about this issue. After reading numerous other reviewers recount similar stories about the mold odor, it's obvious hotel management knows it a problem. Cosmetically, the property looks great -- but that means they just covered it up. They need to clean it up.
