    Wow, just wow

Wow. Just wow. We spent a week at the Sunscape Coco Punta Cana (aka Punta Canada) and loved every minute of it. We went with moderate expectations given all the bad reviews but honestly, in every respect, this resort not only exceeded our expectations but blasted them into space. We were going for a surprise reunion between my wife and her childhood friend from England, and once our reservations contact (Elizabeth) heard about this, she couldn't do enough to make the occasion special for all concerned. She invested a lot of time in setting up a location for the surprise, including music, backdrop, and special drinks. She really went above and beyond for us. Both our parties ended up with VIP rooms in the adults section, which we really appreciated. The rooms were amazing with great views and plenty of space. I like how the adult and family sections were separated while sharing a central area. The food was fantastic with so many choices for meals and for snacks inbetween. You couldn't turn around without finding another place to eat. I loved all the restaurants with the possible exception of the Italian one. We felt rushed there as if they were anxious to open up our table for the next group in line. This was probably due to the fact that most people couldn't reserve a table, instead they had to line up to get in. Since we were VIP, our concierge was able to set up reservations for us. Speaking of our concierge, we had a gem in Manuel. Every day he checked in with us to see what he could do for us and where we wanted to eat that evening. He is a great guy and really contributed to our holiday. All the staff at this resort were friendly and helpful and I would say, joyous. We had a lot of fun with our friends but also with the staff. At the buffet, we really appreciated Carlos going out of his way to deliver our regular drinks to our table, even before we asked for them. Zoila always greeted us with a big smile and a dab of disinfectant. We also appreciated the hard work and positive attitude of Iris. At the beach bar, Anderson was always ready to liven things up while we waited for our drinks. The entertainment team was possibly the best we have ever experienced. They kept the party vibe going without being intrusive. There was always something to do whenever you were in the resort. Big shout outs to Jacqueline aka Nicki Minaj, Wander aka Black Panther, Chocolate, Big Boy, and Yunior. The pools were great and numerous. I personally loved the two lagoons pools in the adults section, one being more of a party pool, and the other being more laid back. The beaches were fantastic and not crowded at all. I wish the Bali beds were available without an extra charge, since we were already VIP, but hey, you can't have it all. Regarding the bad reviews, we learned two lessons: 1) the negative voices are disproportionately louder than the positive ones 2) once you've booked, stop reading the reviews. I'm sorry for those who had a bad experience there but ours was fantastic. We would heartily recommend this resort to anyone.

    Kaleidoscope Buffet

During our stay we frequented the Kaleidoscope buffet every morning, most lunch times and often in the evenings, the customer service from the waiters and waitresses was exceptional, in particular a guy called Carlos, absolutely love this guy, so friendly and extremely attentive, always looking out for people, drinks including coffees are on tap, espresso in the evening, tables cleared without asking. He welcomed my family with a smile and a high five each time, genuinely nice guy, 5*’s

Our Stay at Sunscape Coco Punta Cana

Pros: - Buffet lunch/dinner had lots of variety! Fish, chicken, pork, pasta, etc! We were a bit skeptical after seeing some reviews, but it turned out fine! We did not get sick throughout the trip! - Breakfast was also delicious. They had everything. Fresh fruits, smoothies, eggs and omelettes, hash browns, sausages, bacon, cereal, etc. We were very happy with the offerings. - Coco Cafe is very nice! You can get all sorts of coffees, sandwiches, pastries, and even ice cream in the afternoon/evening. It is open from 7 am to 11 pm! Do be aware that there can be quite a lineup, especially in the morning. - Lots of chairs at the beach! We usually arrived between 9 am and 10 am. - There was a bit of seaweed in the water on our fourth and fifth days, but overall, very clear water for the majority of the stay! - The rooms themselves were for the most part clean! They looked modern. The beds and pillows were very comfortable. - The only time it rained during the day was once during our week stay and it lasted about five minutes. The sun came right back out. The rest of the time was nothing but nice weather. It would often rain around 7-7:30 pm but only lasts about 10-15 minutes. - There was a pool with two waterslides that adults could enjoy! Restaurants: - The Italian restaurant was very good! Probably the best out of all. The service was very good! - Chopsticks was very good as well! However, the service was a little bit disappointing. - Tierra was lovely! Nice salad and soup bar for appetizers, and they come to your table with a variety of meats. - The grill was okay. It took the longest (out of all the a la carte restaurants we went to) to get served. The food was good, but nothing special. Cons: - A lot of the staff were NOT friendly... - Long check-in line/long waits constantly at the lobby reception. - HOT ROOM if on the top floor. We were on the third floor of building four. AC cooled the room down to a maximum of 25 degrees celsius at night but went up to 28 degrees during the day. - We wanted to change rooms to see if AC was better somewhere else. They gave us a key to a room to go see if it was better. This new room was in building six. We decided to go see it, but it was exactly the same. We went back to the lobby to give back that key and told them we would just deal with our original room. Once we got back to our room, we realized reception had only given us back one key. By this point, we were hungry and exhausted and just wanted to go eat, and so we did. We went back to get the second key after dinner. They gave us a second key, but they had changed our room to the one we had gone to earlier to see in building six! They were arguing with us that they had given our room in building four to someone else and that it was not ours. They were fully convinced they were in the right and just argued and argued! We were panicking because all our stuff was in this room. They ended up giving it back to us after around 10-15 minutes, but not without multiple explanations of the situation and lots of arguing. Even once we got our room back and our two keys, one of our cards did not work. At this point, we were tired and just lived with the one working key for the week. - The theatre is right next to building four. Shows only start at 9:30 pm. If you like to go to bed early, this is not the building for you. It is extremely loud, and you can hear everything very clearly. I would also argue buildings three and five experience this issue. It was very loud! - Lack of service at the buffet. They would only come once with water, and even then you had to be lucky. Overall, we did, for the most part, enjoy our stay at this resort. I think our stay could have been far more terrible. Would I recommend this resort? Maybe not as a first choice. However, it still remains a good option.

People are very dramatic on here

This hotel is a SOLID 4 star and does not deserve the multiple 1 star reviews it has garnered. Some sources state that this hotel is a 5 star so if you go in with that mentality you might be a tad disappointed but overall this was a SUPER fun week with very few issues. Rooms: The rooms are spacious and clean. We had a room in building four, right by the beach, on the top floor (3rd floor). The ceilings were super high and really pretty. The rooms certainly do not sparkle with cleanliness but they are far from unsanitary. There is a safe (ours worked perfectly fine), a mini fridge, a TV and a hair dryer that works surprisingly well. We always had hot water in our showers and the water pressure was not terrible. The only actual issue was the AC. Since the ceilings are so high and are directly connected to outside, the room remained super warm the entire time. There was cool air coming out of the vents and the ceiling fan was on 24/7 but simply due to the structural organization of the room it never dropped below 25 C (77 F). Despite it always being toasty, it was not unbearable as we always kept the curtains closed and the lights off whenever we left the room. Overall, the lack of AC in the room (and pretty everywhere on the resort) was the biggest issue Note: upon further discussion, we discovered that even the rooms on the first and second floors had the same issue even though they didn't have to high ceilings. Food: This is where people are really dramatic. I read so many reviews saying the food is terrible but that could not be farther from the truth. If you are not a picky eater, you will find SO much to eat at every meal of the day. Breakfast was always tasty with eggs, sausages, bacon, pastries, juices, fruits, potatoes.... As for lunch, we usually ate at the pizza place that also serves burgers, chicken wings... and it was ALWAYS delicious. Dinner was also always good as the buffet would have several options and the à la carte restaurants were also great. One weird thing about this resort, however, is that they don't do reservations for the à la cartes so you just show up and they give you a buzzer. Sometimes we would have to wait up to and hour and a half until we got a table and then service was usually pretty slow once we got inside. However, the waiters were always so kind and seemed to be working hard so I don't feel like it's fair to complain about the slow service; they really seemed to be trying their best. Beach: Very nice, some seaweed in the water but nothing terrible. I also read many reviews about pesky beach vendors but if you sit far enough in the back you will barely ever be bothered. You can only walk two resorts up on the beach which was kinda a bummer but thats not anyones fault, just the location of the resort. Drinks: Unsure why people complain, there are tons of bars and they always have lots of options. No, the liquor might not be the highest quality but we're in the Dominican so I don't really know what people expect. Staff: There are a couple staff members at the front desk who are a bit rude but I also acknowledge that there is a language barrier and they work super long shifts in the heat so I didn't really take offence to their harshness towards us. Overall, the other 99% of the staff is super friendly. Other: The waterslides are SUPER fun, would highly recommend. Entertainment at night was always good. The casino, though we didn't really use it, seemed very nice. There is a really big gift shop in the lobby in case you forget anything. Also, not really related, but there is one waiter on the beach who is the most handsome man I have ever seen in my life (please tell him I say hi) In short, a great stay with lots to do and eat. Some renovations could certainly be used but I think some reviews are way too harsh and if you are looking for a vacation without breaking the bank I think this is a GREAT option.
