    Mixed reviews from family members

We were here for 7days with two other couples (6 adults total) and overall this was a good hotel. Great location for spotting wildlife and sea creatures. We would recommend bringing masks and snorkels. The food was quite decent and had a varied selection, but some of the people we travelled with had a bad experience with a twist tie found in a buffet meal. We never had an issue with our meals however. The quality of the amenities was all over the place. Some of our party never received fridge refills and repeatedly asked for bottled water, while we had nearly a case in our room. The hotel staff at the bar and dining rooms were some of the best we’ve ever dealt with. Great job to Francisco, Gerardo, Eric, Julio for always being friendly and accommodating. Overall we were quite happy with our stay and could recommend this hotel to our family and friends.

Exceptional Value - A Wonderful Holiday

So many bad reviews - I think people have extremely unrealistic expectations. We just left Sunscape Akumal and had a wonderful time. The staff are friendly and helpful. The beach is the best in the area. Food is plentiful and tasty. Entertainment options are what you should expect for the money. We enjoyed our vacation and our experience at Sunscape Akumal. The facility is clean and comfortable. People with expectations of a brand new hotel are going to be disappointed. Hopefully, you are enjoying the beautiful beaches and getting to know the people in the area instead of deciding if your vanity is what you saw on the latest home improvement show. The many pool options offer lots of activity for children and adults. Our son is 11 and felt the pool facilities were for younger children - he would have been right at home age 5 or under. He did find the teen room very exciting. There are programs for kids of every age every day with lots of options for keeping kids entertained and out of the sun. I attended a guacamole making seminar and learned some fun tips and met some other guests. I also did yoga one morning and appreciated the stretch. Great value for the cost of the stay. The beach is awesome. The sand is amazingly fine and lovely for walking. We thought the Sunscape beach is the best on that stretch of coastline. My husband and son snorkeled every day despite the wind and saw lots of fish. Having the reef right off the beach is so convenient for people who love to snorkel. We did a little side trip to Akumal beach and walked to the Bahai and found that the Sunscape beach was easy to get into and as sheltered as any other with the best sand. With a lovely buffet and 4 a la carte restaurants, there are lots of food options. Lots of local faire so you'll get a taste of Mexico. Our 11 year old always found something on the buffet or menu and other kids seemed to find something to eat when they weren't falling asleep at the table (a fun, busy day will do that to you!). This is not 5 Star dining but you're not paying the price for that, either. Unlike other all-inclusives, there are no limits on visits to the a la carte restaurants and there are no reservations required - we loved that. I fully enjoyed every meal and felt I received great value for my money. We had a problem with our safe and a maintenance problem in our room. These are not things that affected my rating of the resort - stuff happens!! The staff responded and the problems were solved. Expecting that your stay will be problem free is unrealistic regardless of where you stay. We did not upgrade to Sun Club and didn't feel like we were missing a lot. We took a shuttle from the airport. The drive was long but we expected it. We wanted to be near the reef so we wouldn't have to take excursions to snorkel. The longer drive saved us time in the long run not having to leave the resort to snorkel. We took two excursions from the hotel but the one booked by our shuttle operator with Rio Secreto was better than the tour organized by the tour operator in the hotel. Recommend going to Tulum ruins with a knowledgeable guide and seeing a cenote/cave. We also took a cab to Akumal beach - not worth the drive. We were trying to find Yal Ku lagoon to do some snorkeling and didn't realize that it wasn't right at the end of Akumal beach like the tour book said. It's a bit further north of the beach down a different road. That little trip would be worth a cab ride from Sunscape (don't tell them you want to go to the beach but to Yal Ku). Overall, a great stay and would highly recommend Sunscape for a family vacation or a large group trying to satisfy people of all ages. The beach is lovely and a great place to escape winter and soak up some sun. Enjoy!

    Great Room on Beach

Pluses: excellent price; a room right on the beach; soft white sandy beach with 11 relaxation beds; lounge chairs under shade; small live bands many nights; well flavored food at buffet; great special facilities for families with young children; superior support staff; great over all location close to Tulum, XCaret and cenotes. Our room was in the older section of the resort and its fixtures were a little dated and worn. Didn’t bother us as everything was clean and worked and it was location, location, location. We loved being directly on the beach. The water is warm, the beach has soft white sand. Entry and swimming can be tricky as there are some limestone and coral rocks. Water shoes were helpful. Highly recommend at least goggles, snorkel and fins were fun since there’s an abundance of friendly colorful fish. We even saw some Southern Stingrays swimming around slowly (use caution as their barbed tail is venomous). There is a strong current running from left to right as you face the ocean. Snorkelers it is easier to get in the water on the left (near the infinity pool) and float/swim with the current south towards the anchored boats. Suggestions: add culinary theme nights at the buffet to increase variety. Keep hosting bands. We particularly enjoyed Black and Red. We would like to visit Sunscape Akumal again.

    The worse experience

This has been by far the worse experience. We have traveled to many AM Resorts and AM Resorts should be ashamed to have this resort represent their Resorts. The service is horrible, employees are rude, rooms are not well kept. We had to leave and go to the nearest Dreams resort. I asked to speak to a Manager and get refused to c ok me out, just goes to show you that they really don't care about their guests. Will never go back! Very disappointed with Sunscape and AM Resorts.

    Great Staff Who Care

Just returned from a two week stay at this smaller boutique type resort that is right on the water, unlike other larger resorts you have a great view from most of the public areas. It is a long transfer from the airport which we knew having stayed in the area previously. This was an unplanned trip which came about on short notice based upon excellent price opportunity for the area and time of year. It has been several years since we had stayed at any resort that was not “adults only”. The children at this resort were never an issue as there are several separate areas dedicated to family’s with young children. The staff were all very pleasant and professional in every interaction going to extra effort to make sure you were happy. Just one example, My wife made an off the cuff comment on Valentines Day to the host upon entering the pizza restaurant. “I want a heart shaped pizza for my valentine” she said with a grin. Sure enough the host had the chef prepare her a special heart shaped pizza delivered with a Big Smile. Our biggest issue during our stay were several large groups that arrived at various times during our stay and basically took over large sections of the beach. Saving beach beds for twenty plus people. Some of which went unoccupied all day long. But because one person got up early and placed towels out, others went without a place on the beach. A few employees that stood out were Noeli and Valentine from the bar staff, Pepe our UVC Host all helped make our stay special. AM Resorts delivered another memorable vacation for my wife and I. I would recommend this resort to anyone looking for a great stay at very reasonable pricing.
