One of our best
We stayed between Jan 10 and 17. The resort is beautiful, the closest we have stayed to the ocean. The Sun Club Ocean front room was worth the upgrade. The staff were attentive and genuinely friendly. The only downside is the 90 minute drive from the airport. We would highly recommend this to families and those who want a quiet vacation. We never felt crowded or part of a huge mob. Great job Sunscape.
The resort billed itself as "remodeled" and "new" but it's a lie. The main rooms are located in buildings that look/feel/smell as if original to the resort's construction. Rooms are dated, upper floors (2 & 3) have no actual balcony, furniture is broken, AC is sporadic, room cleaning is marginal and the bathtub/shower is downright dangerous to ingress/egress. The only "new" to this place seems to be the adjacent recently-built condos, for which the resort has hired an aggressive and rude sales force to pitch their availability. The beach itself is pristine, but the water hides many large rocks that are downright dangerous given the unpredictable surf action that occurs in spite of the natural and man-made reef that exists further out from the shoreline. The food is marginal all the way around - little variety and less taste - even with several "restaurants" to choose from. Alcohol and other beverages are plentiful, but don't expect any wait staff to come to you on the beach - you get your own if you want it. If you're generous with your tips, you MIGHT get consistently good service for room cleaning or in the buffet, but no guarantee of it. Entertainment is more similar to an American-style nursing home for the elderly but without volume control. The sound/music is always at fever pitch and the terrible acoustics render words unintelligible. Frankly, your hometown high school talent shows are of better quality than the "shows" put on at the resort. One apparent bright spot - there is a kid's pool/area along with a child care room that is decked out in a pirate theme and seems to be a hit with the kids. I say "apparent" because I had to walk through the area each day to get to from the resort activities and my room - I had no kids with me. EVERYONE I spoke with during my 10 days there said the same thing - I'll never come back. And that's my sentiment as well. Spend your hard-earned vacation dollars somewhere else.
Run as fast as you can!!!!
This place is by far the worst resort I have ever stayed at. We paid $4,999.99 for my husband and I to stay in a "suite" for 7 days last week. Once we arrived, we were shuttled to a disgusting hovel of a room with a filthy toilet, rusty bathtub, broken television and phone with a cord that dropped constantly and disconnected our phone calls. The bed was disgusting, with stains (I cannot even say) on them. The room had not been cleaned. We spoke to the office, who asked for 90 minutes to inquire as to why we did not have a suite, as paid for. An hour or so later, they called and stipulated that they would need another 90 minutes to very. An hour or so again they called us and said that they would not have an answer for us until the next morning at 10:00 a.m. We were exhausted as it was late evening, so we slept in our clothes on top of the bed. We were also told that we were not entitled to a "suite" because we had booked with "Sian Ka'an" before it became Sunscape. Needless, to say we were never contacted by anyone. We waited until 3:00 p.m. for an answer, which was not forthcoming. At this point we called Air Transat who transferred us to another hotel, at a cost to us of an additional $1,200.00. This holiday was an utter failure.
We were a little concerned about this resort because of some bad reviews but now we are here I don’t see what people are complaining about. Food is great, room is great beach staff are awesome. If your looking for a great all round 4 star hotel this is awesome
Let me preface this by saying we stayed three weeks here and therefore feel we have a well earned point of assessment. The Good: The staff was exceptional, thank you to Gilberto, Angel and Edelfonso. The beach is beautiful, the snorkelling amazing. The food was ok. Only 3 others aside from the main Buffett and they were not up to our standards The Mediterranean restaurant made food that we could not recognize. They try but unfortunately they were unsuccessful. The Italian restaurant serves only Pizza and Calzones and the Taco Restaurant was quite simply bland food. The rooms are quite dated but you almost heard on a daily basis that guests were seeking to change rooms. Ps. NO ELEVATOR. The UGLY. This resort does not have control of its guests. It was impossible to find a quiet spot. The resort allowed guests to bring their children to the swim up bars with their floaters and toys . Parents who sat for hours drinking while their kids ran wild .Although this is not really the fault of the resort they certainly need rules about little kids sitting at the bars. Very loud. I have stayed at other resorts with kids without any problems but this place was LOUD constantly. They had a beautiful area for children with a huge pool and slides and waterfalls but because no alcohol was served on that side parents just let their kids go to the adult pool. They resort lacked both propriety and a sense of order. In their efforts to please everyone, they have lost many return clients. If you are seeking some down time with great location, great food. This is not for you. This is not for couples or seniors or anyone seeking romance .
