Worst trip EVER!
We are a group of 8 girls that have travelled to St-Martin on April 25th 2019. We paid 1788$ each for our trip only to find out the other passengers leaving on the same flight from the same departure city with Sunwing paid 1358$. A difference of 430$ each X 8 passengers = 3440$. The is absolutely unacceptable, in my opinion that is taking advantage of people and sounds like robbery to me. But that is not the only problem. We booked direct flights to and from St-Martin only to find out a week prior that we were now stopping in Punta Cana to pick up 55 passengers. This extended our travels by many hours. Furthermore, Sunwing announced a price drop when they announced the connection to punta cana and we did not benefit from that either. Again, not the only problem. We were promised that the resort was up and running and ready for travelers. The resort was still under construction, we were on the 6th floor and every morning at 7am we were woken up by banging from the construction. Furthermore, the food was disgusting, and almost non existent, they were always out of food, I have eaten better in Cuba and that says a lot. No onsite store for personal effects. No entertainment past 8pm, and for a group of 8 girls that was absolutely disappointing to say the least. Also, we were promised a no kids area, the kids pool was right outside our window and could heard kids screaming as of 830am... I could go on and on. The way we found out that the other travelers paid so little is because we were all complaining and they said that is why we got a huge discount. I said what discount ? I paid 1788$ and they were aghast that we paid that much because they paid 1358$. I have complained to Sunwing to pay us back the difference but they are saying too bad.....needless to say we will never use Sunwing again.
June 13-18 Great Vacation!
Sorry for the long review, worth the read, hopefully can help someone: Eight (8) of us booked this resort approximately in February 2019 and after reading reviews I was nervous at what to expect. Please keep in mind I am someone who never writes reviews but I see too many bad reviews (and seems to be people who nitpick little things) to not write one about this resort. I am giving the resort a 4/5 because of minor issues that could potentially become better and hopefully someone at the resort sees this and can improve them. Yes majority of the island is recovering from hurricane damage. We had rooms on the 6th and 8th floor facing the front of the resort, so we had a view of the roof, airport, and beautiful mountains. No issues at all and no construction. The elevators worked just fine as they would in any resort. There weren’t many people arriving in the lobby when we checked-in and it went well. We had 3 rooms with double beds and one was a king so they gave us a single bed for that one which worked great for us (it was comfy). Throughout the day at the resort there were plenty of activities going on and they have an app you can look at with the free Wifi (that works great) to see what they have scheduled. Plenty of games: Bingo, Flip Cup, Beer Pong, Beach/Pool Volleyball, dance parties, aqua aerobics etc. (Shout out to John for the fun games). The bar tenders (Jason at the pool/the Palms bar and Eddie at the lobby bar were great!) Most of the employees are so nice! The pool and beach are beautiful and I loved seeing and hearing the planes take off, it never got old! We did not have any issues with getting lounge chairs at the pool or beach plenty of options. And the beach was absolutely gorgeous. The food was average plenty to choose from, but waitresses did not look too happy for whatever reason. There were not many dessert options to choose from. Other than that it was good. There are not many shops for souvenirs near the resort there were a lot by the cruise port in Philipsburg. Unfortunately, if there are no cruise ships majority of them are closed so we didn’t stop by on the way back from our excursion. If we would have known that we would have went when one was docked. Some Updates to Consider: -The pool bar closes at 5 and the towel hut closes at 6, but the pool is still open. I believe the pool bar and towel hut should not close until the pool does. Pool bar should have more than 1 bar tender, he was quick but still a lot for him to handle. -The lobby bar and The Palms bar do not close until 1am, the Pizza buffet should not close until the bars close. (We ate around 7:30pm/8:00pm and were hungry again around 11:30pm/12:00am from drinking) -There were plenty of activities during the day like I mentioned, but at night there were no events going on. One night there was a BBQ with a show but nothing after, another night there was Karaoke. I personally, should not have to leave the resort to go find night life. The We lounge across the street was fine. But several in my group went to Simpsons Bay to find clubs. I have stayed at other all-inclusive reports (which had more things to do on the resort) and have gone on several cruise ships, but overall the resort, pool, beach, employees, rooms, service, excursions were great it was a beautiful, wonderful and an amazing experience. The resort is safe with security officers and the area as well. If you want absolute quite then do not stay here as you can hear the planes take off and land. This did not bother my group as we loved it. The age groups here ranged from kids to retired adults and everyone we encountered seemed to have positive vibes. We had such a great time and did not want to leave. We will be back sometime in the future with a much bigger group!
Terrible/ Horrible/ Worst Vacation
We stayed at the Sonesta Maho from April 18th to the 25th, it was the worst vacation we have ever been on. We were advised by Sunwing Vacations a week prior to our stay that there would be minor construction on the back of the building while on our stay. To our surprise the hotel had not finished being built. It was in MAJOR construction! There were electric wires coming out of walls, sheet rock missing or unfinished in the lobby area and on our floor and halls. There was construction workers using the elevators to transport material to the upper levels of the hotel as they were still being built. The rooms need to be sound proofed properly. We woke up several times in the wee hours by banging, screaming, and moaning! The town of Maho it self looks like a war zone, only 20% of shops are open. There are roofs still missing, windows barred up with plywood and tarp. Very sad and unwelcoming, and not to mention DANGEROUS! This is the exact location the Canadian father was shot dead by a robber while protecting his daughter two weeks ago! The hotel lacked food. We had to pay $$ our morning waitresses for fresh fruit as there were NONE at the buffet. This is until we discovered a grocery store across the street. They served canned peaches and pear! The hotel lacked supplies for drinks such as bananas for the famous local drink BBC, mint and limes for mojitos, strawberry mix for daiquiris. My husband once had to leave the Point restaurant to go to the bar to bring us wine as we waited over 25 minutes to be served, the waitresses were so overwhelmed and unfriendly. The food was ok, but no gastronomic cuisine as St. Maarten is known for. We finally rented a car and left the resort (if you want to call a hotel with a meal plan that!). We spent the rest of our vacation spending money on other beaches on the French side and another resort La Samana that was the highlight of our stay on St. Maarten. We filed a complaint four days after our return home and received a reply this morning (nearly two months after our return.) Sunwing Vacations claim that the Sonesta maho would compensate us $189 Canadian dollars in total for the worst stay ever. Shame on you Sonesta Maho!
TERRIBLE! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!
We ignored the bad reviews and decided to give this hotel a try. We wish we listened. Now we’re stuck here with terrible food and rude service from most staff here, especially the managers at the restaurants. All of those managers have no customer service skills. None of them put a smile on their face when they talk to you. They need to be trained! Please do something with the food. They’re terrible in every way. We can’t wait to go home and it’s only our 3rd day here. Our group of 30 people travel to an all inclusive every year for the last 20 years and this is by far the worst we’ve ever experienced. Don’t waste your money like we did!!!!
It was a good week, staff was very helpful. Weather was amazing, food was good, no complaints on this end..
Overall everything was fine. We ended with a room with double beds instead of a king suite. Thankfully someone else ended up with a king suite when they wanted the double beds, and so they swapped our rooms. Otherwise cannot complain...
