We booked a couples Secrets Royal beach all inclusive vacation for july/August 2019. We were there 6 days, 5 nights and it wasn’t long enough! Everyone at the resort was extremely friendly. We commented on how we didn’t meet one person that was rude. Definitely not something we’re used to in America! The check in was easy and quick. We had help with all of our luggage to the rooms. The rooms were well air conditioned, clean, and huge! The view from our room (5353) was a pool view room and it was gorgeous. We originally thought we would upgrade to a swim up, but decided against it once we saw our view! The food was good. We tried many new foods. I would definitely recommend trying the Hibachi at Himitsu, but they only are available by reservation. The restaurants aren’t always open, but room service is 24/7! You also have all access to the other resort restaurants. There are locals on the beach, but they are not overbearing. We said no thanks and they walked away. Very friendly! There are guys standing out at the beach in white polos with numbers on their shirts. They will ask you about the shopping and take you to the local’s shopping center for gifts. We purchased some items at a good price (you haggle the price), but others are better quality and cheaper in the stores at the resort. The men in the polos escort you to and from the shopping center right on the beach. I would recommend going to the gift shops before going to the shopping center. There are also men with monkeys, an iguana, and a parrot. You can take pictures holding them, but it costs and they don’t tell you up front. It’s only about $5, but it was totally worth it for me! They won’t charge you just to hold them though. The beach had seaweed each day, but the resort kept it fairly clean. It wasn’t bad enough where we did not get in the ocean. However, it was a bit of a nuisance. It was like that at all the beaches there though. The pool was always clean! The bars were not lacking alcohol. The drinks were strong and available almost all day and night! We never got sick from the food or drinks and we have bad stomach issues! We did have to wait a bit for check out, but it was right at noon. My husband didn’t want to take this trip because of the newsfeed in the DR, but he was looking at vacations back there as we were in the airport waiting to leave! He loved the vacation too! There was never a time we felt unsafe! Highly recommend booking this resort!
My wife and I went to Secrets Royal Beach for seven days July 8th. The resort was beautiful, the beach was huge and looked great. The food was pretty good and it was nice to be able to go over to Now Larmier to try other eateries. The people working at Secrets were great. They were very nice and did what they could for you. We would definitely go back.
An Excellent Friendly Hotel
Well after being home for a week I thought I’d write a quick review of this wonderful hotel. Arriving at the airport was a pleasant surprise, small and uncomplicated, although our luggage was the last of the conveyor belt. Quickly through customs and passport control, hopped into a private transfer onto the hotel. First person to greet you was a friendly young man who didn’t work for the hotel, he was selling excursions, wanted to get to our room so told him well come see him later (didn’t). The reception desk was efficient and friendly, but the anti-drugs policy I had to sign was novel (I’ve never had to sign an agreement not to use illegal drugs). Hopped onto a golf buggy to be taken to our room. We were blown away by the room (5165), spacious, airy and light, and impeccably clean. We opted for a swim up and we were not disappointed, a few steps past our own sun loungers, over a little piece of grass and into the pool, luxury. Within seconds we were asked by a waiter if we wanted any drinks (Thanks Omar, what a hero). After a quick drink we decided to explore to get our bearings. We walked to the beach and was almost immediately approached by a seller trying to get us to go to a stall further along the beach, he was happy that we would pop along later (never did). He offered me a cigar when I politely declined he suggested some cocaine? (also, politely declined) Please note these guys are not super pushy or aggressive just say ‘no thanks’ and a quick hand shake and you are on your way. The beach was lovely with a huge number of sunbeds and soft groomed sand. A quick walk around the resort showed us that we had booked into a fabulous resort which was very well tended, lovely gardens and friendly staff. Wandered over to the Now Larimar (the sister non-adults only hotel we share) to check out future eateries. Note that there appears to be a ‘market’ held on a Wednesday. All the vendors sell similar trinkets and they all ‘hassle’ you as you walk past, they will give you gifts and the usual spiel, just say ‘no thanks, I’ll be back later’ and they will eventually let you go. Our first nights dining was at the buffet (La Riviera) and we had a wonderful meal (there was tons to choose from, all freshly cooked and kept piping hot). We also met the excellent Jenny. She kept us topped up with wine and was fun to speak to, she was also one of our regular waitresses during the week, what a sweet lovely smiley lady she was. A real asset to the hotel. I’ll highlight the restaurants in a separate review as there are too many to do here. We tried most of the restaurants. Our two weeks went really quickly as we chilled by the pool, had our first foam party and our first silent disco, great fun. The entertainment, although occasionally a little cheesy was thoroughly enjoyable, the entertainment team work their socks off keeping us happy, and you have to join in to enjoy the experience. Try out the silent disco, what a laugh, in fact we went to most of the shows and met some lovely people to chat to during the intermissions. The bar staff work exceptionally hard, there were complaints that the alcohol was watered down, but we always managed to have a merry evening every night (hic), particularly when we introduced the bar tenders to our new favourite cocktail – Irish Cactus – Tequila and Baileys. Cocktails seemed a little weak, but you could always ask for an additional shot. The housekeepers and maids do a fantastic job. Clean sheets most days, new towels when wanted, couldn’t fault them. The mini fridge guy also fills your drinks order (I’m a diet coke guy and he filled the fridge with it). The Gym was OK, bit on the small side but the cardio room was great with plenty of treadmills to try to burn off the excess calories. All the staff were brilliant, friendly and helpful with a desire to make your holiday great. There are too many people to thank, but the ones who stood out were Jenny, Alexis, Hector and Carlos. I can’t forget Omar and his lady companion who did the drinks by the pool, two lovely people with smiles on their face all day long. Our Maid was excellent, I don’t know her name, Please remember to tip these guys (when its due). On average I tipped $1 for drinks and $5 - $10 for meals. Good job Secrets Punta Cana a fantastic holiday, and in the words of the big man himself – I’ll be back (in an Austrian accent).
Just an Ok Resort with many disappointments
Let me preface this review that we didn't complain everyday to management. We met several couples that did and got free spa service or excursions. I am on vacation not complain vacation. We just returned from our weeks stay at the Secrets Royal Beach. This is our 3rd Secrets resort to stay at and this one needs the most improvement. There is lots of construction next door which is very irritating. This alone should have been worth some kind of compensation. Our second story preferred master suite room had a beautiful view of the beach with a spectacular balcony except for the noise which ran from 8 am to 8 pm. The mini bar was a huge disappointment. 4 beers no LIQUOR. We are used to Karisma resorts where your room is stocked with full bottles of premium liquor and wine when you arrive. I will say that Milly the concierge after expressing our disappointment to management got us a bottle of wine and a bottle of Stoli's. Hats off to Milly. Great job. The top shelf is limited. The food at Secrets needs to step it up a lot. The French restaurant at the Larimar is the best restaurant. Bring lots of ones and fives for tips. The casino next door at the Larimar is the size of my garage. Go to the Hard Rock. Lots of peddlers on the beach. The beach is beautiful with some seaweed. Do not exchange your money in PC airport because of the very low exchange rate. The people are aggressive in the airport trying to grab your bags. Just say gracias over and over. All in all we won't be back.
Paradise in DR
Here is a nice resort tucked away on the end of the DR that you shouldn't miss. We visited there during the off season so not everything was running and the staff was a little light. However, the food was good and the overall staff were kind. You can enjoy the "buffet" style dinning in the main two areas, or get reservations at their specialty restaurants and have a served meal. As in all locations, your main servers are important. Our Butler Jeffry was the top of the class. He saw us daily, took care of everything we needed and made great recommendations for things to do and places to eat. Finally, when you get there, make plans to do some adventurous things. We went diving, "boogie - go karts" and toured the city with a private driver. All great excursions. Enjoy your trip!
