The Resort was Gorgeous and the exceptional staff was always a pleasure to serve us while we were there. We can't compliment the food service manager and the individual chefs for the care and attention they provided to accommodate my dietary needs. I am vegan and all of the chefs I came into contact with, displayed their culinary skills.
Decent food and professional staff.
I booked this trip through Costco Travel and it was a great deal. 5 of us went for my friend's birthday. I arrived a day before my friend and they offered us a cold drink when we checked in, but they didn't offer my friend a beverage when they arrived....they need to be consistent. The mini fridge in the room was barely cold, the A/C on full blast did not feel cold, there was a daddy long leg spider at the tub, the tub jets didn't work and they had to hit a reset button, the bed was so uncomfortable, the TV only had a handful of channels in English, the taxi to downtown is SO expensive and since they're so far away, you don't have a choice. However, we took Uber on the way back, which worked out. They didn't always come by for turndown service, room service always took FOREVER. Some of the staff were not very friendly and were bitter....I'm trying to enjoy my vacation, so I'd rather not feel the feeling that you don't want to be working there. The buffet was always great and the food servers were so friendly. The Coco Cafe has very limited options and it's the same every day if you need a quick bite or if it's between breakfast and lunch. They don't have top shelf alcohol, but I guess that's expected for an all-inclusive. The restaurants weren't great and we ate out a few times. We hated waiting to sit down to eat and then to eat food that wasn't great....usually overcooked or bland. They have a beach, but the umbrellas/covers were so far up the hill (next to the bar). It would be nice to have a few umbrellas to borrow/rent so that people can be right on the beach.
Just got back from an outstanding stay at this resort. Our second time there and it was as good as our first. If you're considering going to this resort, go you will love it. Everything is great from the immaculate landscaping to the pools, rooms, and restaurants. Most of all the staff, they have a great staff. They all greet you and they go above and beyond to make your experience a great one. Here are some that made our stay memorable: Gabino and Eloy at the preferred pool, funny attentive and kind. Cesar the concierge at the preferred pool, always taking care of us. Jhoel at preferred check in, professional, kind and very helpful. Francisco the bartender at the preferred club, amazing mixologist. Pablo, Jose and Leonardo at the Rendezvous bar, catering our drinks to our preference as well as friendly and funny. Nevy at the Oceana restaurant, and Alexis at the Portofino restaurant, excellent waiters, they left you alone but at the same time were always there when you needed them. If you're looking for beach access this is probably not the resort for you as the beach is unswimmable, but if you're looking for a great vacation then this is the place. The only negative from my experience or any Secrets Resorts is the presentation that they try to get you to attend. My wife and I took it once and it was unpleasant, they don't call it at time share but it is. Overall this is great place with an amazing staff.
Flaws begin to show the second time around
I had already stayed at this resort on my honeymoon two years ago, so I was familiar with what I would be getting, however, this time around I was much less satisfied in my trip. Being a preferred member, I was upgraded to a room that was almost identical to the room I'd booked (and the one I had on my honeymoon), save for an addition bathtub on the outside balcony. So, the room upgrade was somewhat meaningless, except that it was on the other side of the property, next to the garden where there was live, loud music most nights. I prefer a bit more quiet, so this was a negative. The preferred club pool and clubhouse were nice -- the pool was much quieter and had a handful of cabanas which were free to use, if you could get one. The service was adequate, but not as good as I expected from something "preferred." The servers seemed to be hustling, but there were just too many people (and too far to walk for them to get food orders) for it to be that frequent. The clubhouse was nice and had a tiny little spread of food to pop in for a quick snack, not much value added but nice. The food was hit or miss, we loved the Italian restaurant the first night, but when we went back we didn't enjoy it quite as much and there was an extensive wait which the hostess didn't seem to have a good handle on. Our second night we went to the Japanese restaurant and for the most part I liked it. Normally I love sushi, but the sashimi on this trip made me pretty sick, digestively, to the point where the entire next day I wasn't comfortable being more than 100 feet or so from a restroom and couldn't enjoy the food or drink. I would definitely recommend against the sashimi. Overall it was ok to pretty good, other than the food making me sick.
Fun in the sun. Had family time. Enjoyed the food, service was excellent. Hope to go again. Shows were entertaining. Performers were amazing. There were things to do all the time. Enjoyed the kitchen tour and the water aerobics.
