Here now, I only hope it gets better!
As said in the title, I am currently staying here, and only hopes it gets better. While the beach is amazing, this is some of the worst food I have ever had at a resort. The service in the restaurants is terrible, but that is a perfect match for the food. It is not edible. Do yourself a favor and skip this. Go to Excellence if you want to stay in Playa Mujeres. I wanted to try something different, big mistake. If you want to stay in Playa del Carmen, go to el Dorado. If I could leave and go elsewhere, I would. Update will come when I get home if it gets any better. It has to, it can’t get worse.
Breakaway From Routine
Thank you to the Secrets Playa Mujeres staff for helping to make this week-long vacation for my boyfriend and me memorable and fun! ♥ Facilities- This resort is only a few years old. The decor is suitable, think 2000s-style spa aesthetic with the dark wood and white walls. Personally, I'd think a luxury resort would have been built and designed with more modern decor, but that might be the south Floridian in me critiquing. The resort itself is very clean. This is the first resort I have stayed where they offer room service twice a day instead of once. Love it! After tracking sand from the beach and accumulating shot glass after glass, you'll want the midday maid service. ♥ Room- Unfortunately, the first day shocked my boyfriend and I both. We paid for an ocean view and got a room with a view of palms and trees blocking everything. To make it worse, we are convinced our first room contained mold. There was evidence of this as we first walked into the room- the A/C was on full blast, yet it was muggy and there was condensation on the mirror...also an odor in our small entry hallway. After complaining to the front desk, they switched us to a true ocean view room that night. Much better but the first experience reflects on my overall rating. The rooms come with a shower room, big enough to fit two people and a hot tub with jets that can fit two as well. I will say I am impressed that hot water is an abundance at this resort. ♥ Food- If this section can get five stars alone, it would. From the falvors to the presentation to the portion sizes- we were both very happy. ~Bordeaux: The steak is the best thing on the menu- we actually preferred the French restaurant at the neighboring Dreams resort much better. If you sit outside, often there will be a small jazz band or a violin player on the Himitsu patio you can see and hear clearly. ~Market Cafe: One of the healthiest buffets I have seen at any resort. If you're vegan or maybe just need a little detox from all the partying, grab some tuna tataki and a kale salad here! ~Oceana & Portofino: Didn't try as we heard from every couple that the food was bland. ~Himitsu: Omg, omg. I wish we had this restaurant at home. This is just one of the tastiestAsiann eateries we have been to and easily the tastiest restaurant in the resort. (See my review on the Himitsu Yelp page) ~Hang around Barefoot Grill around lunchtime- one day they will have strictly seafood- grilled octopus, sauteed prawns, grilled salmon, shucked oyster, and mussels. One day they will grill hotdogs and hamburgers. One day they will serve gin and coconut juice in a coconut. Yum. It varies so just keep visiting every day as it changes frequently. If you are staying here make it a point to go to the Fiesta (typically on Sunday) and the BBQ (inquire the day at the front desk). These dinners are outside and included in your stay. You'll get to taste many different types of food. The Fiesta bar had a taco station, a chicken station, a tequila station, a dude with a tequila cart, a dude making paella, and so many other things I forgot to mention! This is also a great way to view free entertainment and meet other vacationers. ♥ Drinks- Ketel One is included so I was a happy girl! I would say that the liquors are mid-shelf. If you are a beer and wine drink, you're covered all the way around. If you just like pretty, fruity alcoholic mixed drinks- girl (or dude) this is the place for you! Bahama Mama and The Superman are super popular and live up to the hype. Also, if you want to make your trip just a little more comfy, get a stack of dollar bills. Yes, the place is all-inclusive, but those dollar-tip-per-drink get you lightspeed service and often the staff will cue you in on little tips and tricks to make your experience even better. ♥ Entertainment & Resort Culture- We stayed here for a week and frowned when we had to leave the resort. There are many classes and activities to do for every type of vacationer. You can wake up and do yoga- or go rifle shooting. Take a ride around the property on bikes or take Zumba at the pool with your fellow early AM drunks (which I highly recommend and you'll see that people-watching here is very entertaining). The entertainment staff works very hard to keep the guests engaged in whatever is going on. We took a ceviche class, sushi rolling class, pole dancing class, went to a rock show, saw a Mariachi band, went to a Mayan ceremony, saw a rodeo performer, saw fire performers...and many other things. The entertainment staff has great English and are so personable. Chat it up with them and they will tell you after so many other things going on in the resort you may be unaware of. As far a resort culture goes, my boyfriend and I met so many other fun couples! An extrovert's happy place. Most people socialize a lot with each other at this resort which I really loved. ♥ Thank you again Secrets for the memories! We'd love to come back ♥
Great Place to Visit
This resort was amazing. The food was good, the service was amazing, and beach was perfect. From the time we got in until we left we felt welcomed. The staff went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed our stay. We got one of the premium rooms which made the check-in a breeze. Part of that experience includes premium only access to VIP rewards, scheduling special events, and they even served snacks all day with a bar that had premium options. We are early risers so we went and reserved a cabana each morning before breakfast, and we would hang out there for most of the day. We brought our own tumblers and waiters were happy to take them up to the bar to get them filled. They also had a few of the premium liquor options at that bar, but you have to remember to ask for them. From the cabana you could just see the ocean as some points, but you could hear it and feel the breeze. We would leave to go take a dip in the ocean every few hours and then come back and relax or nap on the bed. It was so comfortable we stayed there all day for a few of the days. We also got massages, my husband two and I got one. They were amazing and very professional. The massage location also had amenities that were available to the premium members or anyone getting a massage. This included a hot/cold experience. They had a hot room, sauna, and a hot tub – and between each hot experience you would dip into an ice bath! I had never done anything like that before and it felt amazing. There was also a smaller swimming pool with jets and cabanas around it. One of the days we ended up staying there for a few hours, and it was so peaceful and relaxing. If I had to summarize this trip it would be relaxing. There were no kids to worry about, the food was great, and drinks flows as much as you wanted. Before we arrived we thought about doing an excursion, but once we arrived we didn’t leave the resort. I would high recommend this location for anyone who enjoys relaxing and listening to the ocean as you nap. NOTES: The ride from the airport is fairly long so plan accordingly. If you do an excursion it may take a while to get to the location. We had some friends do one and it took them an hour of riding in a bus. They thought it would be 4 hours, but that wasn’t including the drive each way…something to keep in mind. They have rooms with a swim out pool - those rooms don't connect to the large pool, so it is a private pool for people in that block of rooms.
Great Resort Poor Management
90% of the staff were great and provided services with pleasure as they said when we said thank you. We were Preferred guests but 75% of our 13 rooms did not get preferred amenities from day 1 to the end. We mentioned several times but all we got was that they were sorry and it would be taken care of. The worst was when they hosted poolside dinner they left the restaurants with bare bones staff who couldn't accommodate the few guests that showed up and had to wait for over 2 hours to be served dinner. Instead of being honest the door attendant lied that tables were not ready even though only a few persons were in the restaurant. We could see clearly inside through the glass. Secrets Playa Mujeres let us down after some great reviews. All the other restaurant staffs were exceedingly wonderful especially Oceana & we made friends and tipped over $700 throughout our stay.
Is this heaven? No, it's Secrets Playa Mujeres.....
Secrets Playa Mujeres is one of the most beautiful resorts I have ever seen - and I have seen many. The beach is wide and sugary soft. The water is calm in the morning and a little bit more exciting in the afternoon for those who want to ride the waves in a floatie. The resort is not too spread out, and for those wanting to visit the gym, spa, main lobby or restaurants in the front of the resort, there is a wonderful golf cart service. The restaurants are top notch. At the French restaurant, Bordeaux, I had one of the best filet mignons in my life. We loved Oceana so much that we went twice. A terrific waiter named Daniel gave my daughter and me an informative and interesting lesson on wine. The World Cafe is where we had all of our breakfasts with the help of Edhar, the super excellent server. I'm attaching a picture of him below. He came to know our preferences after just one day. I always had ice water with plenty of ice brought to our table, and my daughter and I had plenty of coffee flowing. One day my daughter was sick and did not come to breakfast. Edhar fixed her a plate with a toasted bagel and found two bananas for me to take her. He was incredibly attentive! Our favorite golf cart drivers were Eduardo Castilla - The Best Formula One Golf Cart Driver in Mexico, and Israel - The Best Golf Cart Driver in the Universe. All of the drivers were great, but these two were full of personality and fun. I wished I had carried a few dollar bills everytime we needed a golf cart in order to tip for every trip. Next time I will remember. Speaking of tips, although the resort is all-inclusive, extra gratuities are MUCH APPRECIATED by the staff. They work very, very hard to make your stay perfect. My practice was $2-3 at breakfast; same at lunch if buffet, $5 if table service; and $10 at dinner. $1 per drink at a bar, unless it is bottled water, then maybe $1 every other time I get water. Servers who bring drinks to the beach I would do $2 for each drink. Since you don't see a bill, remember to bring cash. I spent over $200 in tips, and it was well worth it! There is an ATM on site. Be ready to pay an additional $20 fee on top of the ATM fee to use the machine. Better to bring cash with you, I believe. We loved Secrets Playa Mujeres! I hope to take husband and daughter #2 back with us next year.
