Overrated & Overpriced
I’m not normally one who write reviews, but as my original review was removed, I am going to reiterate how overpriced this hotel is (~$400 per night). It’s a little run down and indoor restaurants are freezing. Hotel management are also very difficult to deal with when issues arise. Bar staff, drivers etc. were very friendly though and views are lovely. Food is average and ends up cold in no time, as air-con is set to 32F. I know most people enjoy themselves here, but just wanted to give my personal (honest) experience after a 4 night stay (with my wife). Note; 5 nights here will cost you ~$2000 • On arrival - Welcome letter addressed to unknown persons. This hotel states how attention to detail is so important. Clearly Secrets missed the obvious here. • 2nd Day - Locked out of room, due to electronic door malfunction. Had to wait 2hrs for new door mechanism replacement. Ended up missing local excursion. • 3rd Day - Informed management of the above and they offered a room upgrade. Wife and I packed up, to find that the upgraded room was significantly smaller than original. Returned to original room again to unpack - complete waste of time! Seriously, if you are looking for that personal ‘special’ experience, then this resort is NOT the place for you. A full day of my 4 night stay was wasted, waiting around for issues to be resolved.
Nice but some major disappointments
We had an overall good time. The place is beautiful and almost all of the staff are amazing. The grounds were well maintained (always seemed like early in the morning there was some sort of empty glasses or litter on the beach, more of a shame on the other guests though). We had an ocean view suite with preferred club- didnt feel like the preferred club afforded any real benefits besides access to one restaurant for lunch since it was raining the whole time and the cabanas weren't really an option. Maybe we missed some info somewhere. Major downer was waiting forever for the shuttle bus on multiple occasions. Our room was at the top of a hill, so the drivers didnt want to drive up it in the rain. Also when we wanted to go somewhere, we would be told to meet the driver at the bottom of the hill. Since it was raining a lot while we were there, we spent a lot of time waiting in the rain. Since many of the restaurants have dress code, it was extra frustrating to be in heels trying to navigate the slick hill. Also I dont usually want to put on bug spray before I go to a nice dinner, so it didnt feel classy. My husband and I found the food disappointing. We enjoyed the market the best. The room service might be 24 hours, but the options are extremely limited. I am a vegetarian and there were nearly no options. One time I tried to modify a ham and cheese sandwich, I wrote in the comments "make vegetarian, no ham please " and I seriously got bread with a tomato and piece of lettuce in it. No condiments, nothing. Plus room service also generally took about an hour, so I just went to bed hungry that night. Its easier to point out the things that are wrong, and in general it was nice but we don't feel like we had any sort of a luxurious time. We would go again, but only for a very short time or if the price was more reflective of the quality.
Overall a pleasant experience.
The only issue I experienced was lack of really hot water in the room during certain times of day. All the staff are amazing, extremely friendly and make you feel welcomed and special. The overall presentation of the resort (facilities, views, landscape) is also great.
Best honeymoon ever
We just returned from a 7 day honeymoon trip at secrets papagayo and it was hands down one of the best vacations we have ever been on. The rooms were great. Comfortable, clean and cool. The food across the entire resort was incredible. We did not have one meal we did not enjoy which is tough to say about all inclusive resorts. Every couple or group we met also seemed to have the same great things to say about secrets. The service was top notch. Mario is the chief concierge and he top notch. He went above and beyond to make sure our honeymoon was the one we had always dreamed of. Mario and his staff treat you like family from the moment you step foot on the resort. He set up surfing for us in Tamarindo, ziplining and white water tubing at Rio Perdido and told us what else was worth seeing while in Costa Rica. I was so sad to leave. Costa Rica is an amazing place, don’t be afraid to venture off the resort and experience the Costa Rican culture. Pura Vida!
25th Anniversary trip
After reading the reviews on here we had high expectations and decided to chose Secrets for our 25th Anniversary holiday. After a long flight we arrived at the hotel very tired and very hot, we were welcomed witha cold flannel but NO drink. Only 2 people were checking people in so we had to stand in line and wait (still not offered a drink !) Finaly it was our turn and we checked in but were told our room was not ready and that we would have to wait until after 3pm.We were given room 406. we headed down the STEEP hill to the bar and had a drink , we waited until 3pm and then went back to reception UP the STEEP hill (first and last time)After a short ride up the hill by minibus we arrived at our room. It was lovely and first impressions were good. We were shattered so stayed in ... then the noise of the vehicles wizzing up and down the hill began ALL NIGHT. we were so tired the next day as we felt like we had slept on the M25 all night. We approached reception and asked to move dur to the noise. We were offered room 465 right at the top and down a walkway . Again first impressions were good, room was lovely and very quite BUT we had no real balcony and a sheer drop to one side. we stayed there for 2 nights and then decided to see if we could move again as we expected more and wanted something that looked like the picture in the brochure. FINALY we were offered 365 AMAZING room, fab location and a plunge pool. We found out that everyone else who were put in rooms 400 -406 had also moved due to the noise, we were all evenually put into the 300`s. although we enjoyed ourselves and met some fantastic people we were a little dissapointed. Resaurants - The main buffet was ok for breakfast but somewhat lacking at other times, it was also closed twice to allow the staff to wait on people at a wedding. The Italian was lovely but FREEZING cold inside and the waiting time was hit and miss (waited 45mins one night for mains) Asian - Again really lovely food amd lots of it. Our favourite the Seaside grill (only available to non privalege in the evening) was SUPERB. however they did decide to close the main rest and Italian on the same night so had to wait over 1 hr to get seated. Bar food at lunchtime was fab. Room Service - Awful.... cold food yuk. Also ordered some drinks from reception to be sent up , 4 phone calls and 2 hrs later they arrived :( Lots of company conventions whilst we were there which spoilt things a bit as they were VERY loud and determined to get as drunk as possible. We used Frank the tank for our excursions and he did not disappoint they were BRILLIANT. Tui rep the least said about that the better. Loved the pool and the pool bar, they do need more shade though as the sun was FEARCE !!!! Entertainment staff during the day work so hard and were so happy. Great staff . I am glad we went as we met some lovely people and hope to keep in touch with them, Sylvia, Colin, Julie and Jerry. :) Would I return probably not as lots more places to see.
