Wonderful service and amazing stay
We had an excellent time at Secrets, wish we had stayed longer. We had a panoramic view and it was breathtaking, yes you must climb a hill but totally worth it for the view and the shuttles were very prompt, we did not wait more than 5 minutes. Food is excellent, everyone is ready to serve you at all time and go above and beyond. Hann at Market Place is the best manager, she was on point and very professional; thank you for making our anniversary special. Marianna at the bar Barefoot Grill was THE best waitress, she catered to us at the beach or pool and knew exactly when it was time for a new drink. She is outstanding!!! The food is top notch, the drinks are plentiful and delicious, the place is big enough but quaint. The views are amazing. If I had one criticism, it would be that as the resort got less busy during the week and they were prepping for a big group, 2 restaurants instead of 1 was closed but the others were not properly staffed and they did not do turn-down service on 1 night.
We loved it
As soon as we got to Secrets, everyone was extremely friendly. We really enjoyed every moment being there. Even the staff that was leaving or coming into work would either say good morning or hello as they walked by us. They go out of your way to make sure you have what you need. The room was nice and always kept clean. Our toilet kept making a high pitch noise when we got there but it was fixed after we mentioned it. We enjoyed walking to our room, beach and the pool instead of using the shuttle because we enjoyed the scenery. But if you needed a shuttle you could use a phone near by or in your room and they would send for one right away. What we liked best was the staff and the pool table area. One of the bartenders, Guillermo, was always refilling our drinks and would find us either by the pool or pool table area. He went above and beyond not just for us but for everyone he encountered. We also loved the restaurant Aqua. Their breakfast smoothies are delicious. We have been recommending Secrets Papagayo to everyone and we would definitely go back to the resort.
Not very happy with member benefits, unable to use member benefit in gift shop as everything was already on sale, unable to use benefit is spa because I wanted to purchase a package. So I was treated as every normal person staying at an AM resort.
If you want to book PC Oceanfront Suite....please read.
Upgraded and paid a bit more money and booked a preferred club oceanfront bungalow suite. If you want to have an unobstructed view of the ocean, make sure you get a room in the 100s on main side of report or 300s on other side of resort. 200s have a horrible view. I would reclassify them as partial ocean view. Room 218, our first room, when standing on balcony you can wave at everyone eating at Seaside Grill. After some back and forth was moved to room 102, which had a great view. They do need to clean up and haul away the palm tree they cut down. Room was smaller than I thought, but still good size. Toilet room door is a frosted glass door. You must be comfortable with your significant other or whoever you are staying with if you've got business to do in there. If not, I suggest asking them to step out on the balcony. They need better sealing at the bottom or shower door. Had to lay a large pool towel outside shower because so much water escaped. Safe, steamer, and blow dryer provided. A lot of reviewers say that the main side is just too loud. I was concerned about that but we actually didn't mind being on the "loud" side because we weren't in our room a lot. Sure music played at night, but it usually stopped around 10-11. Staff was nice. David in the PC lobby was fantastic. He initially showed us around when we arrived and pointed everything out. As we walked by the gift shop, I noticed a framed butterfly in the window and told him that I loved butterflies. After the debacle with our room and noticing our displeasure, he surprised us with a gift for our anniversary, one of which was the butterfly I saw in the window of the gift shop. I couldn't believe he remembered that! They really need to replace the lounger cushions around the pool area. They are old, dingy, stained, etc. We are loners and don't participate in much at all. We played water basketball and had a blast. Participate in the activities. In the end you will have had a great time. Beach is black sand. If you are looking for clear blue waters, this is not the place. Can collect a lot of seashells during low tide. Mixed drinks very good, especially the Mango Lava, I think is what it is called. Definitely not much alcohol in the drinks. Restaurants were good. The tomato soup appetizer and chicken fettuccine alfredo at Portofino was awesome. Himitsu was really good. We aren't food snobs so we liked pretty much everything we ate. Room service messed up bad on our breakfast in bed. We both really liked the pancakes. Those were delicious! Toast was cold and rock hard when we got it. You do get approached to attend a 90 minute presentation for an Unlimited Vacation Club membership. Was offered $250 in resort coupons that we used to pay for our excursion to Diamante Eco Adventure Park. If you want the coupons, just sit through the presentation. We actually ended up joining the UVC club. I will tell you DO NOT believe everything they tell you that you will get. There are so many things we have found now that isn't true. Ex: 2 free resort weeks after paying off membership. The word "free" gets you. It's a discounted rate and you either pay $1600 to use one week at certain resorts or use both weeks, which would be use your 2 weeks for 1 week, at their more popular and more expensive resorts and pay $3200. Just beware. Overall it was a nice resort. Don't be bothered by little things and let that ruin your vacation. You do pay a lot of money to stay at the resort, but I'm not going to let some water running out of the shower or dust in the corner or a dirty sliding door track bother me.
Costa Rica: A place you will want to visit...over and over again
My wife and I were stopped by Karim Fawzy (of Unlimited Vacations) inside the airport with a giant smile. Normally we run past these things, but so glad he stopped us. Because of Karim, a very trustworthy, resourceful, responsive, and helpful guy, we were able to benefit from all that Secrets (a beautiful adults-only resort with great food and staff) has to offer. His helpfulness and genuine interest to make your visit in Costa Rica a memorable one continued throughout our entire 7 day vacation there. From seeing Rincon de la Vieja, to doing the Mega Combo tour and even renting a car to explore the rest of the area, he was an even better resource than our travel agent and any other person you may ask. He helped make it an unforgettable experience and one that has us talking about coming back over and over. When you see Karim, make sure you stop and talk to him too!
