Customer Ratings & Reviews

We stayed at this resort in August 2019. The experience was absolutely amazing. Their staff, food and ambiance was excellent. What we loved the most was their rooms which were secluded and sort of apart from the main area which gave it an intimate vibe. I highly recommend this resort if you want a different experience from the common all inclusive huge resorts.
Big Bucks for sizzle not steak
Costa Rica is amazing and if I didn’t leave this resort to venture around I would have never considered going back. The resort is located close to the airport but not close to Much else. We went for six days to celebrate a friends wedding so therefore we did not choose the hotel. The property is large and all the suites no matter which ones are located in the hills surrounding the main areas. Preferred club or not you are either walking or waiting for these little shuttle busses that come on call to take you to the main areas. I found it very inconvenient. The drivers are all great as the roads are treacherous and the vans rather big. The food is exactly what secrets pumps out. What they think Americans who like to eat a lot will like. Didn’t have anything I would go back for. They want you to wear slacks to a hibachi steak place? Why so I’m well dressed as people are flipping shrimps into my mouth? The alcohol was not bad. That being said even at the preferred club they had a measly selection of top shelf. One bar at the pool had 1800 the bars at night served horrid Jose Cuervo. The lady at the omelette station was awesome so were all the drivers. Especially Jay. The AM star tours were great. Marvin and Jose treated us great. The beach by the hotel is pacific water and the sand black so the time of day will dictate the quality of water activities. The beach must be public as there are people hawking their wares and selling unlicensed tours all over the beach up to the stairs. Kind of annoying unless you wanna buy stuff or take tours you may not come back from. The rooms are pretty much all the same size but with differ t views. I’m sure they have some type of larger honeymoon suite or but we were in a Regular and preferred room and both were identical except for the mini can of Pringle’s. I guess all inclusive appeals to a certain type of person. The easily impressed maybe? Overall I believe AM resorts is like a cheap rich uncle who puts out potato chips when u visit his mansion. If not for the poor people working for tips the resorts with Hall closedown because the life blood is the people working there they are all great very nice people. Another thing that is weird is when you have a wedding there and ask you what you want to eat like a month in advance being that they had a month to prepare the food I thought it would’ve come out great but I was sadly mistaken as my steak look like he can walk away and my neighbor steak look like it was scorched on a jet engine
Check in was quick and easy, there were only about 10 couples from UK checking in. You have to be taken around by mini bus as hilly is an understatement. All bus drivers are happy and helpful. The food was good at all the restaurants with plenty of choice of branded drinks. we had a preference for the Aqua restaurant all of the staff there without exception were amazing, some names we remember are Elana Jose, Marcos Hann Andrea Iabiola Michael (apologies if I have spelt any wrong) there are names I have forgotten but all staff for breakfast lunch dinner are brilliant and a mention to their cat Silvana. We spent out days at the quiet pool or beach. We found the main pool too noisy. If you are travelling from the UK, be prepared to be in the minority, there are about 10% British the rest of the guests are mainly Americans. If you are travelling with TUI do not expect to much from the rep, she also handles US Cost Co clients and twice we sought her out but she was not around. It is worth getting out and about to see Costa Rica, the trips were amazing. Word of warning, if you like to dress up to go to the restaurants in the evening, check the minibus seats before sitting, some selfish guests go straight from the pool in wet gear and sit on the seats, soaking the material seats. This is pure ignorance as there are endless pool towels available that can be taken and sat on. This is not a Hotel fault, but selfish guests. To sum up: Food good, drinks good, room good, Staff excellent.
Birthday and wedding anniversary celebration here!
We visited Secrets in Costa Rica for the first time for my birthday and wedding anniversary. Unlike other resorts, this resort was a disappointment. Our room - the Presidential suite was great but they didn’t do a good job ensuring there were no bugs in the room upon our arrival. So when we got here, we had to use the bug spray and get rid of the bugs on our own which was not a good start to our vacation! Then when we checked in, I didn’t like the fact that we were given the “timeshare pitch” right away. I mean here we were tired and wanted to rest and this was very annoying. I don’t think it’s a good way to greet your guests especially the preferred club members. My husband even said we didn’t want to deal with any timeshare stuff and then we were told, it’s not timeshare. But in reality it was. Anyhow, then the biggest disappointment was food and drinks. For room service, be prepared to wait an hour even for something simple like tea or coffee. Then they forget to bring all the things so you have to keep waiting for breakfast, etc. We have been to many all inclusive resorts before and so far, this was my least favorite in terms of food. Drinks were like lemonade and they skimped on alcohol big time. Aqua for dinner sucked. The first night, we went there for dinner and all their meat whether beef or chicken was over cooked or under cooked and definitely not fresh! I didn’t eat there after that. They also don’t have many restaurants here - you have Aqua, market cafe, himstu, and portofino which also didn’t impress us in terms of the food or drinks. I’ve had much more tasty for outside the resort. When we went out, the local food was sooo much more delicious. The room service needs work because often, we had to call multiple times to remind them or get status on our food requests. Lastly, you would think for our birthday and wedding anniversary, they would decorate our dinner table or do something special, they didn’t whereas at our resorts, you always get some special treatment. But not expect that here. To their credit, they managed to decorate our room with balloons and provide a cake but nothing during our dinner. Overall, I wouldn’t return to this resort because they really need to work on their customer service, increasing their food quality and promptness. Here are the positives - nice big rooms, beautiful views, daily activities like kayaking, snorkeling, etc and close to the airport, staff is friendly, and great shuttle service to take you places around the resort if you don’t want to walk/ hike.
An all inclusive in a beautiful location. It's on a bay, so waves are minimal - we would have liked larger waves. I would have liked more shaded areas at both the pools and beach; because of the sun moving across the sky, most areas were only shaded for short periods. The only down side was the evening entertainment - we would have liked more shows as we've seen at other resorts or on cruises.
